I was really, really in the mood for great cozy mystery and Denise Swanson came thought big time with Leave No Scone Unturned! This novel is the second installment in the Chef-to-Go series, but can absolutely be read as a standalone. I found myself immersed from the very beginning and was hooked until the last page. The mystery was honestly a mystery to me until everything was revealed-love that! Denise Swanson always write such endearing characters which adds so much to the storyline. I truly recommend this 4.5 star read to everyone! I am already looking forward to the 3rd novel in this series!
Leave No Scone Unturned is the second installment in the Chef to Go series. I am a long time fan of the author's Scumble River series so I was excited to check this one out. Dani, along with her boarders/employees are gearing up for the new school year and excited to resume their lunch to go business for all the returning students. When Dani goes looking for Ivy so they can head to a catering event, she discovers she has been providing food for a local homeless camp with the assistance of local homeless man, Deuce. While Dani is excited about this new opportunity to give back, it angers others in the community. Deuce is later found by Dani and Spencer bludgeoned to death in a tent. With the assistance of the local police, including a handsome detective, Dani hopes to uncover the killer. This was a fun, fast paced mystery set in a small town I can't wait to spend more time in. The mystery had plenty of red herrings however the author ties it together nicely in the end. I felt much of the same small time charm and warmth I often feel when reading the Scumble River series. I highly recommended this book fans of the Scumble River series.
This is the second book in the series but can be read as a stand alone. 5 Stars! Wow! This book went by so quickly. I loved the characters and the setting. I knew whodunit but not why. We do get a clue but it didn't occur to me. A fun read! Great writing!
This is a fun cozy mystery! Even though this book is the second in the Chef to Go series, I didn't have any problems getting to know the characters.. The setting is a college town in Illinois, and Dani, our heroine is the owner of a catering business called Chef to Go. This book really had me guessing till the end and there's also a bit of a question of which guy Dani will choose in the end. I would highly recommend to anyone who enjoys a fun cozy mystery. Thanks to #NetGalley for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
This is the 2nd installment of the Chef to Go series and Dani Sloan is gearing up for the upcoming school year and her trying to keep her catering and chef to go business afloat. Dani lives in a mansion off campus that she inherited and she has 3 boarders that attend the school. For reduced rent they must help her out with the business. Ivy (Spencer’s niece) is late for a catering gig that Dani needs to go when she finds her out back talking to a homeless man Deuce. It turns out Ivy has been donating left over food the nearby homeless camp thru Deuce. Tippi one of her other borders is carjacked on campus and Spencer (head of campus security at Normalton) gets involved. There have been a string of car jackings off campus and this is the first on campus. Spencer and Dani decide to take a visit to the homeless camp to talk to Deuce and find that he has been killed. The police are called and Dani now finds herself attracted to the new homicide detective and Spencer is jealous. This was a good fast read and I enjoyed the pace of the story along with the various suspects that keep you guessing until the very end. This was a good solid mystery and I really enjoyed this. Looking forward to the next installment in this series. I did not read the Scrumble River series but think I am going to have to add to my TBR list. Like this author!
Intriguing story with lots of interesting characters. Your mouth will water with all the interesting food that Dani prepares. You'll find yourself second guessing to who done it. And then also who Dani will pick as her boyfriend.
Leave No Scone Unturned is the second installment in the Chef-to-Go mystery series set in the college town of Normalton, Illinois and featuring Danielle "Dani" Sloan. Dani and her three college student tenants, Ivy, Starr and Tippi, are looking forward to the start of the new semester and resuming the Lunch-to-Go program for the returning students.
Orientation Week is in full swing and Ivy's uncle Spencer, the college head of security has his hands full with reports of carjacking zombies and claims that students are seeing a creature emerging from the Blackheart Canal that runs through the campus. Unsure if it's just a student prank or the act of true criminals, he sets up surveillance.
Dani discovers that Ivy has been donating the leftovers from their catering jobs to the local homeless camp and when one of the men is discovered bludgeoned inside his tent, Dani joins forces with Spencer to unmask a killer. Unfortunately some of the local business owners aren't happy that Dani has been supporting the homeless and she risks losing her fledgling business.
A fast paced plot with interesting characters, an insight into the homeless and struggling veterans and just a touch of romance.
I received an advanced copy of Leave No Scone Unturned from NetGalley via Sourcebooks. While not required to write a review I am more than happy to offer my honest opinion.
I love this series. The only thing I would change if I could would be the time it takes to get more books! That's only because I love them so much that I am impatient and continuously want more. Anyway, if you are a fan of culinary cozy mysteries this is a must have book (and series). I absolutely cannot WAIT for the next installment.
* Full review to come during release week.
As much as I wanted to like this book, it was just ok. It did not hook me in right away and that set the tone for me. I think the zombie idea was fun but there seemed to be too many people involved and too much going on for me to keep straight.
I loved the next installment in Denise Swanson's Chef-to-Go series. I'm a longtime reader of this author and always look forward to her books, especially her Scumble River series. This one was no exception. To me, it still has the small town charm of Scumble River mixed with an entrepreneurial spirit. Dani brings a new point of view to Ms. Swanson's work and I love hearing about all the cooking and struggles she deals with while also solving a murder. Her boarders also bring a new perspective and Ms. Swanson continues to develop and flesh out all the characters in this next entry. I had no idea who the murderer would be and it kept me guessing until the end. I strongly recommend you to pick up this book if you love cozy mysteries!
This was a fun little cozy read that I was happy to discover. The protagonist Dani is a highly relatable character who makes amazing food, and is oblivious to her own charms. The author does a believable job of inserting Dani into improbable situations and helping solve collegetown mysteries. I connected with the various characters and want to know more about Normalton.
With the university school year getting ready to start, Dani is gearing up her Lunch to Go portion of her business to help support her growing personal chef and catering side of the business. As the college students head back to campus, Dani needs all hands on deck to keep up with the demand. When one of our employees begins donating left over food to a local homeless camp, Dani only wishes she had thought of it sooner. Unfortunately, not everyone in town is supportive and Dani’s business may be threatened by those that do not want the homeless in their community.
When Dani and head of Campus Security, Spencer, find one of the homeless men, Deuce, murdered in his tent, there are questions as to who would have killed him and why. Was it a college prank gone back? Another homeless resident? Nothing is clear, but Spencer and q local police detective are working to solve the case as well as to capture Dani’s attention. Dani isn’t sure who to trust, but she does want to help find the man’s murderer and wonders if it’s related to a string of local car jackings, but what Deuce part of the ring?.
While set in a college community, this is not a book about college coeds, though they are part of Dani’s business and the story. But rather it’s about Dani, a chef that left behind her HR job to follow her passion of cooking and truly does want to do the right thing by those in her life, and her community. With quite a few red herrings, would will have a few suspects before all is revealed. While I did figure out who the murderer was, I did not have all of the facts figured out and had a few surprises. A great series and enjoyable writing style that will leave you wanting more!
<b>Food! Glorious Food!
A book full of culinary goodies and tasty treats along with the struggles of following your dream!</b>

<p> Dani is very much dedicated to her cooking business and has no false notions about her struggles and we get to see her deal with every rise and drop of her business.
She's quite quirky <block quote> Dani was never sure whether she should call her Mrs Epstein or Your Honor. </block quote>
andvery forthcoming and helpful
Iliked how Dani has to deal with her age differences with her boarders and how it stings her from time to time;
<block quote>
"For once, Dani was thankful that she'd put on a few pounds since becoming a professional chef . Her not-inconsiderable weight helped her hold down the much smaller woman...</block quote>
What would've added more towards her character if she talked about her personal struggles with friends rather than just mulling over the same ideas again and again</p>
<p>We have Spencer's POV , having insight of his job and emotions and why he is...well him.
It's the most fun when he deals with the new detective and how he tries to make his stand towards Dani.</p>
<I>story</I>
Mystery was tad bit unexciting, I'll admit the way it was resolved was pretty well, I was impressed how all the loose ends were tied together... but it lacked the suspence-theiller element.
Drama element was resolved too quickly in my opinion (I mean the person just stepped out, after all that effort), maybe we'll get a clearer picture of if there's a sequel.
And honestly I don't think it's fair for Dani to be upset of the police officials having to restrict information, I mean holding it against their personality is a stretch.
I struggled with the writing for ffew chapters, there were so much of the "telling not showing" going on, it took quite a while to actually get hooked into the story.
All in all an enjoyable read,
<I>Thank you Source books, Denise Swanson and Netgalley for the e-Arc</I>
Another amazing read!
I'm looking forward to how this series will unfold.
If I had a criticism it would be how slowly the main characters romantic relationship is moving, but I'm entertained for sure.
This character inspires me to want to be a personal chef. Without the dead bodies of corse. Dani just wants to be a good citizen and help the less fortunate in her community but it might cost her more than just a few clients. The lead detective on the case of the murdered homeless man, detective dreamy as Ivy likes to call him, is open to civilian help while Campus policeman Spencer is not. Of course is could just be a little green eyed monster, not to b confused with the new campus urban legend of a water creature scaring students down by the tributary. Great story and the introduction of another possible love interest is sure to add some spice. I only wish that the stories included some of the recipes from Dani’s scrumptious sounding dishes!
Leave No Scone Unturned is an enjoyable cozy mystery. As is typical of this genre, the story is cute and entertaining and a fast read. It's good for a relaxing day.
I didn't want this book to end! The way the author wrote the mystery, the reader doesn't know what is going on until the very end. The way the author ties in all the plot lines is done in such a perfectly executed way that you slap your head in shock at the end. The only thing that gets to me as a reader is how Dani expects Spencer to completely share everything in relation to the case. That just isn't reality. The fact that a fictional character can cause emotions in me as a reader means the author is doing their job. Definitely a series that I hope continues.
