*I received this book as an eARC from DC Ink. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.*

Selina Kyle is a teen. I really enjoyed seeing this future Batman (sometimes) villain during her formative years. Her mom is bringing home guys, shitty men that Selina has to deal with. Bruce Wayne is the popular kid at her high school.

This being an origin story for a future gray character makes so many great moral questions come up. Selina has her own morality code. She defends her gay friend at school. She steals candy, but gives it to kids. Selina is independent and compassionate.

This story got dark. Selina finds a stray cat and my eyes were watering. There is also some self harm in this book.

I give this graphic novel a 4/5. Some of these superhero origin retellings are unnecessary, but I felt like this told a new story and showed a great perspective.

I did not really care for this book. There was too much cursing for a "middle grade" and I would not really want my 7th or 8th graders to read the "F BOMB" every other paragraph. Why is this necessary in the DC world? Also this was nothing what I thought it would be like. There is no origin story or any real relation to the Catwoman that I love dearly. I stopped this book multiple times but finally pushed through.

I would not recommend it to any middle grade reader or to any other reader group actually.

A smart heroine with a backstory that draws you into the mystique of Cat Woman.

There is action and suspense,

Definitely a read for young teenagers caught up in the world of super heroes and super villains.

Thank you to DC Comics and Netgalley for providing me with an early e-arc for honest review.
My favorite thing about Under the Moon: A Catwoman Tale was the art. The art is beautiful. Isaac Goodhart did a fantastic job. I enjoyed the tones of blue and purple. It was just really pretty to look at. The story itself was just kind of mehh, ehh, it's all right.
Trigger Warnings for: self-harm, animal cruelty, domestic abuse, and suicide. Sheesh, that's a lot. I wasn't expecting this story to contain all those things. I mean, some of them fit the story, but some of them just seemed kind of randomly thrown in. So if any of those things bother you, this might not be the story for you.
Selina has a bit of a man-hate that goes on in this book, which is understandable considering the losers her mom brings home. One thing that I noticed that really bothered me is that it is never brought up that her mom is just as much at fault as her mean boyfriends are. Selina's Mom doesn't stand up for her, which makes her a bad mom in my book. She cares more about getting and having a man then her own daughter. The men that her mom dates are jerks, but that doesn't mean her mom should be let off the hook for letting them treat her daughter badly.
I didn't really like Selina in this book. She makes some pretty dumb decisions. She doesn't confide in people that could help her. She just does some pretty stupid stuff. She's also very prickly. I didn't enjoy her, and I don't really feel like the story gave me any reason to like her or root for her. She's also very cavalier about stealing, which I think sends a bad message. Sure, sometimes she's stealing to survive, but she also steals just for the fun of it.
The best thing about this graphic novel was the art. The story was just one big meh.

The artwork for this book was wonderful, and I was so looking forward to reading about Catwoman. But this one completely missed the mark for me.

I did enjoy this alternative origin story of Catwoman. It is fairly dark (domestic abuse, animal death, potential cults) but you also feel the strength of Selina Kyle. I probably would have given this a four or five but I didn't like the ending. I felt like she gave up on Rosie too suddenly. I thought she would have fought harder. Still better than Mera: Tidebreaker.

I am very sorry to say that even on my phone I was unable to read this book. I tried multiple times to read and was unsuccessful. I was not even able to read it on an app I got to read certain files on. This is nothing against the author and I think the books sounded really interesting and fun. I just wish that it had been available on a wider digital format so that more people could have the chance to potentially enjoy this story.

The artwork was fantastic and incredibly beautiful. DC you better hang on to the illustrator! Although, this book does not read like a fun, thrilling Catwoman tale, I still enjoyed it for the fact that the author addresses some very heavy issues that are the reasons behind Catwoman's origins. She talks about domestic abuse, poverty, and more. It can be a bit heavy handed at times, but I think the author wanted Catwoman's real, un-glamorous life to be at the forefront this time. There were some plot points that were not tied up, but that isn't uncommon in a graphic novel. I hope they will be addressed in future installments, as I would like to read more of this one. Definitely far better than the Mera origins story.

I found this to be a fun and engaging story for a character that I was familiar with but didn’t know too much about. Great for comic book and non comic book lovers.

Forever my favorite Batman villain, Catwoman - in various incarnations - has remained a woman of hidden depth and mystery. I was anxious to start Under the Moon as it seemed like an origin story not really covered before - Selina Kyle from the age of fourteen, living with her mother and mom's current boyfriend Dernell. Unfortunately, from the beginning this beautifully-illustrated (artist Goodhart really incorporates black, blues and purples to great effect throughout, emphasizing the "moon" theme of the book) graphic novel, the cliches run rampant as Selina is forced to deal with unpopularity at school, verbal and physical abuse by her mother's redneck boyfriend, and a love-hate relationship with fellow classmate Bruce Wayne in which Selina comes off weak and tongue-tied. Selina only becomes interesting as a character, in fact, when she flees her abusive home and, after struggling with life on the streets, meets Ojo, another runaway who teaches her parkour, inadvertently beginning Selina's transformation into Catwoman. Or Catgirl, as Selina dubs herself in this story, before finally agreeing to join Ojo's gang for a big heist - which instead finds Selina's newly-minted, hard-as-nails exterior tested when she comes across one of the gang members in the form of a young girl who refuses to speak. Under the Moon is average at best, presenting (at least for me) a not-very-likable Selina Kyle and a dour, uninteresting origin story more filled with tropes than trauma. Not horrible, but to me Catwoman certainly deserves better. 2.5/5 stars

NOTE: I received a free ARC of this title from NetGalley and the publisher, in exchange for an honest review.

Gorgeous visually and such an engaging story about one of my favorite characters in the DC Universe!

Really liked the artwork in this, but the story was cringe-worthy, even potentially offensive at worst and just a mess at best. Not a fan of Lauren Myracle's previous work and this just reinforced any opinions I already had about her writing. Maybe a preteen would like it more, but the content is more older teen appropriate. Basically a book that doesn't know it's target audience. Also, be warned that there is domestic violence and animal cruelty depicted in this if those are things that trigger you and you'd rather avoid them. Thank you to DC and NetGalley for the early review copy!

Under the Moon is an alternate world DC tale of Selina and how she became Catgirl. She starts out as an ordinary girl that a difficult home-life pushed onto the street. After meeting up with Yang, she is drawn into a group that is working on stealing a book. Of course the book belongs to a boy she knows so the tale gets complicated. The shades of color really help define the mood and shape the story without excess details. A calming DC book for once.

This was a good read. Not a great or amazing one, but it kept me entertaining and I definitely enjoyed it.

I did really like the background information we got for Selina and watching her sort of come to terms with things and become her own.

The illustrations were gorgeous and I definitely loved that part of it. I wish this had a sequel though, I’d love to continue reading.

Awesome backstory!
Thanks to NetGalley and DC Ink for the opportunity to read and review Under the Moon: A Catwoman Tale by Lauren Myracle; illustrated by Isaac Goodhart!
This graphic novel is divided into three sections: The Dark, The Light and Under the Bright White Moon and tells Catwoman’s origin story of abuse and neglect. She lives with her single mother and various boyfriends throughout the years and, the last straw is when her cat is killed by the latest jerk boyfriend. Selena leaves home and after being homeless for a while, she makes friends and finally feels like she belongs somewhere. 5 stars for this riveting graphic novel!

Overall, I found this to be a boring book. At times, it was preachy and I don't think it handled the real world issues very well. This book should have had trigger warning written all over it for many teens.

I enjoyed the art-style in this; however, I really cannot tell who the intended audience is? I'm not sure it's handled in the right way for teens, but it's written for teens. The story-line also does not make a whole lot of sense.
