This was a really cute book and a quick read. I loved all of the main characters and I especially enjoyed the fact that Dax and Kailyn are equals rather than one being above the other.
This was a perfect romantic fiction story. Kailyn was a great main character who was empathic, funny and likable. Dax is a charming former TV Star now lawyer. Their relationship builds over time in a natural way. I loved how she naturally fell into their family dynamic and also Daxs journey into this new role in life. Would recommend to anyone. Would love to see this as a movie!
This book is so much more than I expected. I will be honest, 90% of the time I choose romance novel's based on their covers, unless I'm familiar with the author. I chose this solely based on the title and the cover. When I started it and met Kailyn and Daxton, I was instantly smitten, having a ton of fangirl experience myself. I figured it would be frivolous fluff, but it was more, way more. The way the relationships develop are endearing and make you want to keep reading. I found myself thinking about Kailyn, Dax and Emme, even when I wasn't reading. All in all, it's a wonderfully consuming read and I'm glad it was my first into to Helena.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for this digital ARC.
Kailyn Flowers and Daxton Hughes have a classic 'meet cute'. They literally run into each other in law school. Kailyn immediately realizes that he's the star of a show she loved when she was younger. She makes a total fool of herself and barely recovers from it when she trips and falls onto him again twenty minutes later. Something happens near the end of their law school days that makes Kailyn hold a grudge against him. Fast forward a handful of years and Daxton is walking back into her life to ask her for help.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book a lot more than I expected. I figured it would be a relatively cute and superficial story and I was pleasantly surprised by how much more this book offered. It was sweet, funny, and sometimes even heartbreaking. The dynamic between Dax and Kailyn is fantastic throughout the book. Their banter is fun and the chemistry between them works so well. I especially enjoyed the struggles that Dax has to go through with his teenage sister. It felt organic and provided a lot of sweet moments, as well as funny ones. The weakest part of this story is the character of Aunt Linda. She seems a bit like a caricature of a bad guy and I was suspicious of her from the very beginning. Besides that, I thought it was a well done story with a sweet brother/sister relationship as well as a fun romance. I was pleasantly surprised by Helena Hunting's writing and would definitely read more from her in the future.
This was a fun read. The characters were delightful and felt realistic. The romance was strong. This was my first Helena Hunting title and it won't be my last. Looking forward to recommending this title to my patrons.
I love Helena's writing style- and her cast of characters?! OH my I just loved them. This is the perfect book when you need a good laugh and a swoon-worthy romance!
This is the first book I've read by Helena Hunting. I've read reviews of her other books and was ready for a laugh out loud romance. This was not that book. While the story line of Kailyn and Dax is interesting, I found the romance lacking. The main characters are well written, the teenage sister is a typical teen girl coping with loss, and Dax's Aunt Linda is your stereotypical villan. I really wanted to love this book, but I didn't. However, I would read another book by this author because of other reviews about her previous works. If you just want a very light afternoon read, this could be the book for you.
Thank you to the Publisher and NetGalley for allowing me to read and review this title.
Cute, but ultimately not memorable. I feel like Meet Cute isn't a great title for this book, it definitely doesn't sum up the emotional rest of the book, only the first 2 pages. 3.5 stars
I did not like this book. Unfortunately the characters were so flat despite the author trying so hard to add dimension to them. I didn’t care if they got together and I didn’t buy anything that was happening in the book. The sister was written like the author hadn’t been around a teenager in about a decade and so any scenes with Emme just took me completely out of the book.
Would be an okay beach read for anyone who likes a quick romantic read but this is definitely nothing to write home about.
This story was really terrific I absolutely loved this entore story and the romance. It stars two lawyers who are brought together again through tradegy and form a relationship to help a young teenager who loses both parents. Her story kinda broke my heart.
Kailyn and Dax were friendly rivals in law school. Years later his parents hire her to write a trustee do for his teen sister incase something happens to the parents. Unfortubately that happens and Dax and his sister are orphaned. Enter Kailyn as the trustee for his sister.
Add a very evil aunt who is after his sisters money and well this story was fun, romantic and also has a really terrific plot.
I received and ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Cover leads one to believe it is a romantic comedy, or even a but more of a “fluffy” feel, but that’s a little deceiving. I haven’t read anything by this author that I haven’t liked, and I did enjoy this one it just wasn’t what I was expecting. Her books usually have more comedic moments, so the lack of it isn’t bad I just needed to clear my own expectations. Good story, few things could have been developed a little more but overall enjoyed it. Birthday party was a nice touch and fit the relationship perfectly.

Daxton and Kailyn were so great together, and Daxton's little sister, Emme, was so sweet! The cover of the book immediately caught my eye, and made me want to get to know the characters inside. The book switches chapters between Dax and Kailyn and lets readers get into the minds of the protagonists. This is not a rom-com; It's a family drama with a sweet dose of romance, which is slightly misleading from the brightly colored adorable cover.
Without going into too much detail, Meet Cute is about a fangirl and her dreamy teenage actor crush, with both of them growing up to become competitive lawyers who navigate loss together. I found Kailyn's obsession with the nostalgic tv show a liiiiitle much sometimes, which is my only complaint. Meet Cute is a heartwarming story for readers who enjoy romances with heart and emotion at their centers.
Spectacular. Dax and Kailyn’s “meet cute” was the cutest, but what happens later on in their lives is even better. This story just hit me on so many different emotional levels, and I loved them all.
While it is a cute, wholesome story it didn't do much more for me. I enjoyed all characters, especially the little sister Emme but there was nothing new to this plot line. Well written and kept me interested though.
Very enjoyable! I liked Dax and Kailyn. I was so glad when that witch, Linda got her comeuppance. The chemistry was great between the main characters.
This was so cute! While I'm doubtful the legal stuff was 100% accurate (I can hear my lawyer friends screaming now), I was very into the set-up & "meet cute" of it all, from the law school bantering to the balance between comedic and drama once Dax and Kailyn were reunited. This is one of the few romcoms I've read of late, I think, that really struck that balance between feeling "modern" and still having enough high stakes to soothe my "John Cusick standing outside your window with a boom box" loving soul!
A few notes: I do wish Felix had had more comeuppance for his asshattery (he just did not come across as a good friend TBH beyond breaking the horrible news in a non-terrible way?) & I likewise wish Kailyn's adoption history/friendship with Hope had been explored way more. The alcohol plotline was also a little too B-plot movie villain, I think, compared to the tone of the rest of the book, but considering how enjoyable everything else was, forgivable.
A+ do recommend, particularly if you like second chance romances, celeb/actor romances, and plot moppets of the teenage variety!
I really liked this book! The meet cute in the beginning of the book was adorable. I would actually love to read a novella or really a whole book on Dax and Kailyn's frenemy-ship in college. I could see it being chock full of sexual tension and hilarious encounters.
I really liked seeing Dax's development from brother to father figure with Emme. He is so sweet to her, but he doesn't entirely let her get away with anything. The time when he took away her electronics had me rolling with laughter because we all learn the hard way to only take things away if WE, the parents, can deal with the consequences. It is SO apparent that Helena Hunting is a parent.
Kailyn was a great character. I loved the motherly type role she took on with Emme. She reminded me a lot of my step-mom in that regard. She was always around for help, especially when Emme needed a female figure to talk to. I also really liked that she wasn't a pushover and that even in situations where most people would lose their cool, she stuck to being a lawyer and getting things done. That is such a great trait in a role model.
The story itself flowed really well. I liked the way that Emme was portrayed. I thought her grief felt very genuine and while I've never been in that situation, I could feel her anguish by the way she was written. I liked the conflict throughout the book and while I could see what was coming it was interesting to see how it was going to unfold. I will say, I do wish there was more of the comedy that we usually get in Helena Hunting's books. I always like how she'll have these hilarious one-liners in her books that just make me crack up, but this one was missing that element.
Overall though, I do recommend this book. It's light but not given the theme of the book, but I also don't feel like I have a book hangover from it. It's very reminiscent of The Good Luck Charm with it's vibe, so if you liked the way that one flowed you will definitely like this one.
