Yes! Yes! (Oh, please excuse the premature exclamations.)
In Breaking His Rules the player, pharmaceutical sales rep Ashton, gets played in all of the most satisfying ways by business owner Terra. From their chivalrous meeting and funny comedy-of-errors encounter to their reluctant courtship and unplanned relationship these two engaging characters laugh, argue, and tease each other with an irresistible sense of joyous self-awareness consistent with people who are in their prime. Their chemistry smokes from the pages.
Secondary characters and tangential story lines are thoughtful and well-developed. Modern spins on issues of age and ethnicity feel authentic. Plus, Terra and Ashton's love story is simply a totally satisfying read.
When I started reading Breaking His Rules, I was a little put off by Ashton’s rules. I will give everyone a breakdown of his rules to dating. I thought that they were ridiculous. I also want to remind everyone that I am taking the rules from an ARC. The wording might change.
1. Never pick the prettiest woman. They’re usually merely a pretty face, have no real power, and are high maintenance or looking for more than what one has to give. No, the pretty girls will ruin your chances at playing the field. The less attractive friends always want attention and will be far more appreciative in the long run.
2. Don’t think of her as a one-night stand. Think of her as a new friend you can call at 3 a.m. asking to come round her place.
3. No discussing family history.
4. No deep conversations that linger into the wee hours. Keep things light. Airy. Like fresh laundry on a clothesline in the spring.
5. Never treat a woman poorly. Be distant instead. Not too distant, though. It’s a fine line after all.
6. Whatever you do, don’t hang out until the next morning. It gives the wrong impression. No need to contradict the aloof vibe you’ve perfected.
7. No actual dates of Friday or Saturday, as these are universally known as couples nights.
8. No consecutive days of seeing one another, either.
9. No sharing of clothing items.
10. No taking personal items to one another’s homes.
Ashton Lyle’s Playbook
Can you see why I thought they were ridiculous? But, at the same time, I did see the humor and truth in them. I dated (and remained friends) with a few guys who had different versions of Ashton’s Playbook.
I did like Ashton. I loved seeing his character evolved over the course of the book. He went from being an emotionless lady killer to someone who broke all his own rules to be with Terra. What I liked even more was that he was able to move past his horrible childhood and make peace with it.
I loved Terra. Like Ashton, I liked seeing her character’s growth in the book. I did understand why she stayed to herself. Why she was afraid to let people in. Baggage like she had can do that to people.
I loved that Breaking His Rules was an interracial cougar romance. I have read interracial romances (one of my favorite subgenres to read). I have read a couple of cougar romances. But them together, nope. This was my first one and I want to read more!!
The author did a fantastic job of building up the sexual tension between Terra and Ashton. She kept stoking the flames so when they had sex, it was amazing. But, what impressed me even more, was that she kept sexual tension up the entire book. What I also liked is that she had Terra be sexually adventurous. Light bondage and public sex were a theme in Breaking His Rules.
The only thing that I didn’t like about Breaking His Rules was Marcus. He made my skin crawl. I know the author kept true to what happens in the real world. It still didn’t damped my shock and horror about what he did. I kinda wished he hadn’t been in the story. But I do understand why the author chose to have him there. She wanted to show us what Terra was up against and what she came from.
I had the same feelings about Ashton and his father. I did think that Terra overstepped her bounds. But, if something like that happened to one of my kids, I would want to know. Her doing that did open a line of communication between Ashton and his father.
The end of Breaking His Rules was perfect. The author did a great job of wrapping up all the storylines. I loved the HEA!!! It made me happy to read that.
I would give Breaking His Rules an Adult rating. There is sex. There is language. There is violence. I would recommend that no one under the age of 21 read this book.
I would reread Breaking His Rules. I would also recommend this book to family and friends.
I would like to thank the author, Loveswept, and NetGalley for allowing me to read and review Breaking His Rules.

Let me know.
I really enjoyed this book. I like that there were a lot of levels to the characters & their story. It made it that much more enjoyable to read. Terra is an awesome heroine being 41, beautiful, & bold. Ashton is a great compliment to her being British(even though he moved to the States when he was a kid) & confident. She isn't looking for anything serious because she had been married to a deadbeat. He isn't into anything serious because his dad failed him after his mom died & he blamed it on his dad loving his mom too much. Of course sparks fly when they meet (which is one of my absolute favorite scenes in the book) & seeing where they go from there is well worth the read. Highly recommend reading this book!!
A couple of things that I didn't quite like was. Ashton named his cock Ollie. He talks to it a lot in the beginning. Also the ending seems as if there was a check list to make sure everything gets wrapped up.
Things that I liked. Terra played Ashton at his own game. That's probably why is was so interested in her. Terra plays hard to get but not in a playing way, I think she really means to not see him again.
When I first started this book I was skeptical because I am not a huge fan of romances where the woman is older. I don't know why but they usually just don't do it for me. I was pleasantly surprised by this one. It was very well written and I loved the dual-POV. I thought the two main characters had great chemistry and once they got together I found I really liked both of them. I am still not a huge fan of older woman/younger man romances, but I think I will be more likely to give them a chance from now on! This was a quick read for me and had some suspense as well. I would recommend it.
This was such a fun quick read!! I really loved Ashton and Terra together they balanced each other out perfectly and had great chemistry. I’d also like to note that the author really captured the essence of Detroit and everything going on in the city right now.

"Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for the advance copy of this book, in exchange for an honest review."
Loved this book very much. It had just enough sweet, sexy romance and the storyline was great! I highly recommend!
This was story that showcased that it doesn't actually matter what walls you put up or what rules you have in place, or what fears and hang ups get in the way. At the end of the day love will when out, even when what it actually looks like doesn't line up with what you always imagined it would. Nice and sexy realistic love story.
4.25 stars - Solid romance where Ashton, the hero, actually saves the heroine’s life. He’s younger than her, 11 years to be exact, but there’s no cougar talk here. He’s the pursuer, and while she’s very much into him, she thinks she knows the score. Boy, is she wrong. They both get a first hand lesson in true love and it couldn’t have come at a better time for them.
I enjoyed this read and think you will too.
I received an ARC of this book, from the publisher, via NetGalley, in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Ashton had a full-proof set of rules when it came to dating, then Terra came along and re-wrote the script. I loved this couple they were both genuine and upfront about what they wanted. There were no games and lots of hot hot sexy times. I cheered for them to make it the whole way. Great story from start to finish.
Breaking His Rules is a fun, cute older woman/younger man story. I thought it was funny, witty and filled with sexual tension from the beginning. However, there was just a little something off about the story from the beginning for me. I think I hated that she attacked him as their intro into a relationship, maybe. It seemed a little too angry divorcee for me so I had a hard time through the rest of the story. I'll give three chilli peppers of hotness. Thanks Loveswept and NetGalley for the ARC!
Breaking his rules is an adorably honest love story. I felt like the relationship progression. was natural and very reminiscent of today's dating scene. I loved that Tera was a bar owner (Yass Queen) with a clearly awful ex-husband. It made her human because those are real people issues. Ashton had his own issues with his father and the death of his mother. They both seemed really normal and clearly good for each other. I enjoyed the fact that they were able to recognize that they each wanted each other and the fight against being together didn't last long. So, all in all, I loved the love story and the characters blew me away
This was an enjoyable read overall. However, Ashton's family issues were resolved a bit too neatly in my opinion. I don't think the couple's happy ending would have been tarnished without that resolution. In any case, thank you very much for this copy.
Sexy, hot and filled with excitement. Hang on to your hats it's a wild ride as Terra and Ashton take us on a rollercoaster ride that's their relationship.
Good book. Both Terra and Ashton are wary of relationships. His fear is from losing his mother at a young age and having his father’s heart destroyed. Hers stems from an ex husband who played her a fool. He normally doesn’t go for beautiful women as they’re too high maintenance, but he can’t help himself being drawn to her. He has rules to prevent him from falling in love, and she makes him want to break them all.
It’s told in dual POVs, so we get to see both their sides. It was a believable, well written story. There’s hope, hurt, action to keep you on your toes, but overall it was a slow burn, which I liked.
I received an ARC from Netgalley for my honest review.
This was a fun read but predictable. I do love the older woman younger man story line.
Something was missing for me, not sure what but all in all a good read.
A cute typical book . An older divorcee,Terra, who owns a club and doesn't want a relationship falls for the younger playboy,Ashton.
The story developed very quickly for me. One minute he was rescuing her from a terrible blind date and the next minute they were together.
It was enjoyable to read.
This was a cute and sexy read that I enjoyed very much. I'm usually not a fan of romance stories that have the romance develop so quickly but I think in this case the author did a good job making it work and being plausible. Both Ashton and Terra knew exactly what they wanted so it really sold me on the quick romance. They had such great chemistry.
I typically don't go for an older woman/younger man. I usually go for older man/younger woman, but this story I believe has changed my view on the older woman/younger man. I definitely enjoyed it! I highly recommend it!
I am not a fan of older woman younger man situations, but that is me to each its own. I found this book ok, not the best but I guess you could pass the time, me I would have read something else. So we meet Ashton a self proclaimed playboy and then he meets Terra and all of sudden he is head over heels and in love so he apparently changed his way fairly quickly, yeah that did not convince me. But it is what it is, so then we have Terra a divorcee and little leary of getting hurt again but Ashton and his charming ways convinces her and then we have a whole lot of sexy times...That was basically it..
So much goodness in this book:
- A strong, black 41-year old divorced club owner heroine
- A younger, white no-relationships-ever hero who plays up his British accent whenever it suits his needs and ends up being goo over her
- A lot (and I mean a lot) of sexy times - because, of course, they both fall head over heels in love with each other
- Conflict around grief, love, substance abuse, domestic violence
The first chapter introduces us to the hero, who comes across as very condescending and judgemental. I was happy see that he didn't ever go back into this type of attitude from chapter two onwards. At times, especially in the second part of the book, I wished the story could have been written tighter and wrapped up faster.
I do recommend this book though and found it an enjoyable read.
This was my first book by Aliza Mann and I'll be looking for more in the future. I was given the opportunity to read this book in advance of the publication date and asked to give an honest review. All thoughts and opinions expressed here are my own.
