Firstly, the adorable cover has all of the cuteness and I love it! Secondly, what a beautifully written take on mental health, the importance of friendships and what can be found in the absence of hope. Startlingly relatable this took a tough topic and made it palatable without sugar coating. I enjoyed every heartwarming moment and highly recommend.
"Something Like Happy" by Sasha Greene is a poignant exploration of the human spirit and resilience. The story revolves around the lives of two women, Libby and Zoe, as they navigate their individual hardships. Greene's storytelling is emotionally charged and evocative, delving deep into the intricacies of friendship, healing, and the pursuit of happiness. The characters are beautifully rendered and their journey from despair to hope is both inspiring and relatable. This novel is a heartfelt reminder that even in the darkest moments, there is a glimmer of light and the possibility of finding joy, making it a profoundly moving and uplifting read.
An enjoyable read that tackles everyday struggles.
Many thanks to Harper Impulse and Killer Reads and to Netgalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.
This book was pretty light-hearted as it explored depression and its impact on work, friendships and love. Nick was charming and Jade was sweetly fierce. The beginning was certainly attention grabbing and immediately made me feel empahetic for Nick -- "the ache of loneliness" --
Jade's offer of friendship with her list of how to be happy was so simple, and yet had such an impact - not just on Nick, but on so many people!
There's a phrase I hear quite a bit - 'be kind to people; you never know what they are going through.
This is a book about a regular guy and an ordinary girl who fall in love. It's also a book about real life: how to deal with the ups and downs and boldly looks at how mental health plays a role. Despite the heavy and serious nature of depression and suicide, this book is sweet and heart-warming.
I received a dARC from the publisher via Netgalley; this is my honest review.
I didn't expect to connect with this book the way I did. The first half was quite hard going jumping between pov without a clean break. But as I continued reading I found myself relating to Jade in some ways and liking Nick. I liked the way this book dealt with mental health as it felt so natural, real and honest. And I was pleasantly surprised that the book overall was for the most part upbeat. It was exactly what I needed to end this day.
A great cover and a catchy title. I admit that I'm always on the hunt for books to improve my mental health and level of happiness. This was a good book to take care of that! Thanks to NetGalley for the copy for the purpose of this review. Four stars. Helpful pieces of information and stories from Greene.
A story of the day to day struggles of mental illness.
Two people who are impacted by depression in different ways.
Jade meets Nick as he is contemplating jumping off a bridge. What she says to him will change both of their lives forever.
The descriptions of how suddenly life can turn to despair felt so real. The characters felt so real. I was rooting for them both throughout the book.
This wasn't an easy book for me to read, but felt like the book I needed to read. Although it is fiction, it sheds light on the realities of mental illness.
Thanks to netgalley and One More Chapter for the opportunity to read this book.
I requested this book because the synopsis reminded me of all the mental health books I use to read as a teenager and while I dont think this type of book is my style anymore I still enjoyed this book for what it was!
A beautifully written book that shines a light on the instability of mental illness. Jade and Nick are well-conceived characters that you cannot help but like and root for. Their story was full of emotion, there were highs and lows as with any romance but their story was a bit different. The storyline flows easily throughout the entire book which kept me interested throughout. The ending was not what I expected but it was perfect. I am grateful that Netgalley gave me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for a honest review.
Thanks to Netgalley for this book! I went into this book knowing nothing about it, which was a blessing; because if I had, I might not have picked it up at all. Not to say that I didn't like this. Quite the opposite. All the characters they interact with are real and go along way to prove that- it takes a village even in to adulthood.
Good book. Easy to read and understand. Written in a very conversation like tone. I enjoyed it for what it was as a book.
With thanks to Netgalley and One More Chapter for allowing me to read this book in exchange for a review.
What a book!! I've laughed and cried my way through it in no time at all. It's so positive to see mens' mental health being written about and if it helps just one person spot the signs of depression in someone they love then it has done a great thing.
Nick is struggling with life when we meet him. He hates his job in an office and the people he works with, his parents and best friend never visit him and he feels truly alone. He decides to take his own life by jumping off a bridge. Before he has the chance to jump Jade stops him and persuades him to meet her so she can show him ways to he happy. Jade has her own history with mental health problems and although she is falling for Nick she is not sure she is strong enough to be there for him.
A wonderfully written book that shines a light on mental health without playing it down as so often happens with mens' mental health. The author demonstrates beautifully that one can be depressed but happy at the same time. Someone can appear fine but be anything but. I was very invested in the characters and I really really want to know what happens next as I'm not ready to say goodbye to Nick and Jade.
Unfortunately, I have not been able to read and review this book.
After losing and replacing my broken Kindle and getting a new phone I was unable to download the title again for review as it was no longer available on Netgalley.
I’m really sorry about this and hope that it won’t affect you allowing me to read and review your titles in the future.
Thank you so much for giving me this opportunity.
Natalie.
Unfortunately I was unable to get in to this story and had to put it down, however, I'm sure it is a highly loved book and appreciated by the right readers.
Happiness is an ambiguous feeling. It is thoroughly subjective, for starters. Your definition of happiness is different from mine. In fact, the meaning of happiness keeps changing with time. And that makes the pursuit of happiness that much tricky. In the book Something Like Happy (SLH), ninety-two-year-old Archie tells Nick while waiting for an ambulance, “You’ll know when the call hits you, lad…But also don’t forget things can change. What you need at one point in your life might not be the same some other time. Look at me. Twenty years ago, I couldn’t have thought of leaving the mountains. Now I’m really happy to be close to our Maisie and the family. You just have to listen to your heart, lad.” The novel is peppered with unpretentious gems of wisdom like this one.
A romance novel, SLH takes a light-hearted look at how people navigate and articulate their mental health, including their grief. For the most part, this navigation and articulation is a work-in-progress; the legacy of loss and the accompanying sadness largely looming. But human beings are resilient. They manage to make it through one day after another. They learn to let their loss change them. So, when Jade, who has experienced this loss, meets Nick, who is so close to giving up, who saves whom? Something Like Happy is the story that answers this.
