Hayley Snow is on overload with everything she has to do. She getting ready for a family Thanksgiving dinner, preparing for her wedding the day after the holiday, and finishing up a story for Key Zest magazine. Her latest assignment is covering a seafood tasting tour in her adopted hometown of Key West, Florida. One of the tourists participating collapses and dies on the last stop of the tour, which is a business run by one of Hayley’s friends. To help a friend, Hayley now adds an investigation into this untimely death to her already full to-do list.
This book is the ninth in the Key West Food Critic series. I’ve only read a couple of the earliest books in the series, but had no trouble catching up with the main characters. I love reading about the Key West restaurant scene which plays such a big part of this book and in the series as a whole. I am glad to see Hayley has matured since the beginning of the series and is easier to connect with. She is a likable main character who is smart, compassionate, and sometimes impulsive. I like that she has friends from all different backgrounds and generations. She is always willing to pitch in and help, but I admit that tendency becomes a little too much in this book. It was hard to accept someone who is getting married in less than a week and has no place to live after the wedding would keep agreeing to help anyone who asks. I wasn’t sure if I was more frustrated by Hayley continuing to take more and more tasks on or with her friends who kept asking her for favors.
There are a lot of side plots which come up as Haley works on her article about the restaurant tour and asks questions about the tourist’s death while gathering material for the magazine. The various subplots take away from the main story and at times, the book loses focus. Hayley does a lot for the investigation and is able to turn up some important clues, but there doesn’t seem to be much organization or a sense of urgency to her sleuthing. The solution is clever in some ways, but a bit of a let down in others, so I have mixed feelings. Overall, I would rate the book 3.5 stars.
Partially making up for the lack of intensity at the beginning of the book, the drama picks up during a case Hayley’s fiancé is working on that has unexpected connections to Hayley’s investigation. I like the way things turn out in the book, and readers who have been following the series from the beginning will especially enjoy the ending. As expected in a mystery where food plays such an important role, there are several recipes at the end of the book. It will be interesting to see what comes next in Hayley’s personal life and in her career.
I received this book from NetGalley, through the courtesy of Crooked Lane. The book was provided to me in exchange for an honest review.
Hayley's getting married to Nathan ! Well, first she's got one more assignment to complete AND then someone dies on her pal Analise's seafood tour- poisoned by Martha's key lime pie. And it's Thanksgiving. Yikes. There is a lot going on in this latest installment and it honestly might help if you'd read at least one of the preceding books (I'd only read the last one). Burdette takes full advantage of the Key West setting and writes a good twisty cozy. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. Oh= and there are recipes.
Key West food critic Hayley Snow is looking forward to spending Thanksgiving with her family and friends and her wedding to detective Nathan Bransford. One of Hayley's current tasks is to write a review of a seafood tasting tour run by her friend Analise. But the tour ends tragically with one of the customers (Audrey) collapsing and then dying in hospital. Analise fears her business will be ruined and asks for Hayley's help to investigate. Chef Martha Hubbard, whose key lime pie may have been the murder weapon, thinks someone is out to sabotage her restaurant. So did she poison her own pie or was she framed?
Meanwhile, Hayley has a lot on her mind besides the upcoming wedding. Renovation efforts on the houseboat Nathan bought as their new home are going nowhere. Nathan is working long hours on a top-secret operation and then disappears. It's up to Hayley to solve the mystery behind Audrey's death and to save Nathan.
This is another tasty, winning entry and the ninth book in the Key West Food Critic mystery series.
I received an eARC via Netgalley and Crooked Lane Books with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book and provided this review.
Hayley Snow’s wedding to Detective Nathan Bransford is just around the corner and all of the family is gathering for both the wedding and Thanksgiving. Hayley has one more foodie assignment to complete before the festivities begin, but something goes awry on the seafood walking tour and now a woman is dead. Hayley’s friend wants her help, but can Hayley honor Nathan’s wishes at the same time? And just what is going on with Nathan anyway?
A DEADLY FEAST is the ninth book in the Key West Food Critic series, which only gets better and better with each new installment. Most of the books in the series can be read as standalones, but I would suggest reading at least one or two books just prior to A DEADLY FEAST in order to gain an appreciation and understanding of Hayley and Nathan’s relationship. Otherwise, newcomers to the series may develop a distaste for Nathan due to his constant disappearing acts in A DEADLY FEAST.
Hayley and Nathan are facing some very real-world issues in A DEADLY FEAST. From prewedding jitters, to conflicts over Hayley’s tendency to play amateur sleuth, and even to housing issues exacerbated by a recent hurricane, the relationship between Hayley and Nathan is put through the wringer in A DEADLY FEAST. I love that Lucy Burdette allows us to see the more emotional side of both Hayley and Nathan!
Visiting the Keys is always a treat and A DEADLY FEAST reminds me that it’s time to plan a trip again. Lucy Burdette takes us to real Keys restaurants, showcasing the tasty treats one can find in Key West. I love when I recognize various locations I’ve visited already and use Lucy Burdette’s books as a guide to plan where to eat on future trips. Hayley is the perfect guide for the various restaurants in her role as a food critic and I love each and every trip with her- as well as my own ones in the real world!
Lucy Burdette continues to delight readers with tantalizing mysteries, scrumptious foods, and darned good characters in the Key West Food Critic series. A DEADLY FEAST is perhaps my favorite installment yet as we see a lot more emotions flowing, between the wedding, the mysterious disappearances of Nathan, and the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday. The Key West Food Critic series is one of the best culinary cozy mystery series out there and Lucy Burdette hits it out of the park with A DEADLY FEAST!

Haley Snow had more than enough to handle with her wedding preparations and house boat renovations but she did want to finish one more thing for work before her big day. Unfortunately, that one thing got her inadvertently involved in a twisted set of events.
Haley is a likeable character and there is unique set of supporting characters. The Key West setting and all the delicious food is an added bonus. This book is a great extension of the life of Haley and her family and friends. You would have a better understanding of the supporting characters is you have read other books in the series but it could be read as a stand alone too .
A Deadly Feast is the ninth book in this series and the first I have read in this series. This is a good cozy mystery with great characters and well written. I will definitely read the rest of the series.
This was my first foray into the Key West Food Critic Mystery series and I didn’t need to read the previous books to be caught up.
Hayley Snow is about to be married to her detective fiancé Nathan Bransford, just before Thanksgiving spent with family, then her nuptials. She has one more assignment for Key Zest. A food tour through some of Key West’s up and coming establishments. This is a small group tour and on their last stop one of the tour members collapses. Asked to find out what actually happened by the organizer of the food tour, Hayley dons her detective cap and sets to work.
For me this book was busy. There were too many side stories that could’ve been left out. Also, there wasn’t a lot of suspense or true mystery for me. I think firming the story up and trimming some excess would make this story flow better and be a more intriguing read. I did enjoy the descriptions of the island and it made me want to visit.
**I received an ARC copy of this title from Netgalley and this is my voluntary review
Loved this book, as always. This series never gets old for me. I love Hayley and Nathan. I love her family and her extended family. Fabulous mystery. Can't wait for more.
A Deadly Feast by Lucy Burdette is the 9th book in the Key West Food Critic Mystery series, and it was great. Hayley Snow is the food critic writer for Key Zest Magazine, which keeps her busy enough, but Thanksgiving and her wedding is right around the corner.....and of course a death. Hayley is frustrated with her fiance Nathan Bransford because he is working a special case, and he is not around. Hayley is determined to get to the truth, about the women's death, along with all the other events going on. When I read a Hayley Snow mystery it's like visiting my friends in Key West! This book does not disappoint. I strongly recommended this book/ series, to get the most out of the series you might want to read them in order.
I reviewed a digital arc provided by NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books. Thank you.
This is book 9 in the Key West Food Critic series and it's a great addition. It can be read as a stand alone but you'll want to know all about the romance from the previous books. Haley and Nathan are down to the wire with planning the wedding and the contractor for fixing their houseboat isn't co-operating at all. Just days before the wedding Haley is taking Analisa's seafood tour of Key West when one of the group drops dead. Haley can't not help clear her friend's name. Good cozy mystery to solve and a wonderful wedding to attend. I received a copy of this ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Hayley and Nathan have finally set their wedding date, but nothing ever runs smoothly for Hayley. First she is involved in a seafood tour that ends with the death of one of the tourists. Then her estranged father and his new family have accepted the invitation to attend her wedding. And last of all Nathan seems to be missing just days ahead of the wedding. As she investigates the death, she discovers it might have been murder and the death puts her off key lime pies served in a mason jar, but for how long? Another delicious Key West Food Critic mystery.
Definitely a slow read. It took me forever to finish this book as it just dragged on. The author probably could have written the book in 3 pages.
The houseboat being redone kept being mentioned yet had nothing at all to do with the story line.
Just a really boring book that wasn't interesting at all.
I enjoyed this latest addition to the Key West Food Critic series. It's well written and reads smoothly. I did find Haylay's worry about what Nathan is up to to be a bit obsessive but in the end that's a good thing. The wedding was perfect. #AdeadlyFeast #NetGalley
This is my first book by Lucy Burdette. I had a great time reading it, even though I had not read the previous entries in the series. I definitely want to read more books from this author, her writing style is solid and engaging. The characters were likable, and the settings were well described. The description of the different foods the characters eat actually made me a bit hungry at times, but that was to be expected considering the fact that the main character is a food critic. All along, I really wanted to know how Audrey had died, and the author had me guessing all along. A Deadly Feast is a great weekend or vacation read, I highly recommend it.
This is the 9th book in the "Food Critic" Series by Lucy Burdette. This is a culinary cozy series and always a enjoyable read. I have read the entire series and always enjoy the sleuth and the protagonist as well as the Florida Keyes setting. The receipes are always a delight. This book was one of my favorite of the series.
In this next in series our intripd protagonist Haley Snow is still working as a food writer for the local paper and planning her wedding while trying to oversee the renovation of her new houseboat. She is still living with her housemate Gloria on her houseboat . Haley attends a food show and a death occurs. Haley is soon involved in the investigation much to the chagrin of her boyfriend a police detective who has his own case to work on that is taking up all his time. .In the meantime she has family personalities involving her upcoming wedding going on as well as Thanksgiving.
One of my favorite things about this next in series was Haley has so much going on and how the sleuth develops over the course of the book. Following along with Haley the reader is fully immersed. the culture of Key West. I enjoy the food descriptions, the culture of the locals and the friends of Haley. Its always a interesting read and a fun sleuth. All the favorite charcters are here . The receipes are divine and the conclusion of the wedding was enjoyable at the end. I enjoyed the multi levels to the sleuth and suspect list and clues as they developed to a surprising conclusion. A very enjoyable addition to the series. Thank you for the ARC which does not affect my review.
A DEADLY FEAST, the ninth book in the Key West Food Critic Mystery series by Lucy Burdette, is like a tropical holiday vacation without getting on an airplane during the hectic Thanksgiving season. The author provides an amazing assortment of delectable dishes, a gathering of family, entertainment, a wedding, and …murder, all beneath the sunny skies of Key West, Florida. Protagonist Hayley Snow is preparing for her nuptials to Detective Nathan Bransford. Most brides would not be joining a seafood tour group in order to write one more article for her employer the week of Thanksgiving. And definitely not mere days before her wedding on top of trying to get her houseboat home remodeled so she and her groom have a place to live. But, Hayley is a hard worker and dedicated to her job and joins the group. Besides that, her groom is on a special case so Hayley isn’t able to spend time with him and wants her job to keep her mind off of her worries for his safety. I have so enjoyed watching Hayley’s journey and personal growth throughout the series and A DEADLY FEAST is my favorite of the bunch. While it can be read as a standalone, I highly suggest starting at the beginning in order to enjoy the character development that occurs, as in real life, with Hayley alongside her family and friends.
When a death occurs at the end of Hayley’s seafood walking tour, her natural investigative curiosity is intrigued. When one of the chefs on the tour asks Hayley to look into the death, worried someone might have deliberately killed the woman to sabotage her restaurant, she can’t help but get involved. Except her groom has asked her to stay out of any dangerous situations because there’s some bad stuff happening in town. I admire Ms. Burdette for how she creatively manages to keep Hayley on the fine line of honoring her groom’s concern while at the same time finding out information. In past books, Hayley has put herself in danger to find the truth, but she’s learned to using her intellect with less risk. Despite that, the author manages to put plenty of excitement into the story and provide enough suspects to keep the plot moving. There was a unique twist that I didn’t see coming and the heartwarming conclusion makes me want to book a flight for Key West immediately!
A DEADLY FEAST is a drool-worthy book and Ms. Burdette provides the reader with recipes at the back of the book to make those drools a reality.
This is the ninth book in the Key West Food Critic Mystery series. In my opinion, the books get better and better as the characters mature.
Hayley is getting ready for Thanksgiving and her wedding to Nathan, her policeman fiancee. She has to write one more article for Key Zest magazine first about a Key West food tour. However, when one of the members of the food tour turns up dead at one of her friend's restaurants, Hayley knows she has to investigate even though she knows it will anger her fiancee.
The plot of this book was great, it was hard to identify the killer which always a plus in a cozy mystery. I recommend this book and the series.
Thanks to Crooked Lane Books and NetGalley for ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I've read all Lucy Burdette's Key West Food Critic mysteries and she does a fantastic job with them all. Her main character, Hayley Snow, a food critic for magazine, Key Zest, gets caught up in helping to solve murders. This mystery deals with an alleged key lime pie food poisoning days before the Thanksgiving holiday. You will not regret reading this book.
"A Deadly Feast" really intrigued me because of its setting, which is Key West, Florida. I got hooked as soon as I started reading. Having been to Key West, I was able to mentally walk around with the characters. This added a lot of charm for me. In addition, the characters were interestingly drawn. Their individual quirks added variety to the story and livened up the plot. I especially liked feisty Miss Gloria, Hayley's room mate. Hayley seemed like a realistic person too, with her qualms about her upcoming wedding. Most brides could identify with her pre-wedding jitters. The plot moved along well and kept me interested. Although this was the first book I read in this series, it is not the last! I recommend this book to those interested in cozy mysteries with appealing settings, or those who enjoy culinary or food industry themes.
I received this book from the publisher and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. The opinions expressed here are entirely my own.
A Deadly Feast by Lucy Burdette. While on a food tasting tour, one of the clients falls over dead. The question is was it because of the seafood or something else? Hayley Snow, the food critic for Key Zest magazine, wants to know if the seafood was the culprit before her best friend’s food touring business is shut down. This is a detailed plot with lots of twists and turns. Much drama until the very end. Hayley Snow must find out the answer in a hurry as she is due to be wed in a few days. Thank you to Net Galley for allowing me to review this book.
