Kiss Me, Caitlyn, or, Romancing the Shrew by Laura Garner hasn't lived up to my expectations.
I have expected a fun romantic comedy with lots of funny moments and instead this is a quite confusing and over the top romantic parody.
The beginning was good however after that is started to lose momentum and getting confusing.
I don't particularly like Caitlyn's attitude, as she acts as a juvenile and can't make up her mind whether or not to give love another chance or not.
There were some interesting parts.
I found rest of the characters almost cartoonish, but it was funny at times.
DB was a typical ladies man who had an change of heart at the end.
While rehearsing for *Taming of the Shrew*, Caitlyn meets DB and love at first sight happens. But it is not at first sight as they have known each other long time ago. Will the spart lead to something forever or will DB old habits prevail?
Caitlyn relocated to a new place to be closer to the boarding school where her 13-year old daughter goes. She auditions for “Taming of the Shrew”, with the intention of meeting the people that live there. On stage, she is confronted with Devlin (DB) and the sparks fly right from the start.
Caitlyn is very leery of DB and his philandering ways. They spend a lot of time together and eventually he wears her down.
DB was a lot of fun to read and he did have an epiphany somewhere in the middle that made him change his approach to Caitlyn. Caitlyn can’t seem to let go of what happened in the past long enough to give him a proper chance. They do get together in the end, but it lacked the definite spark that their first meeting had.
The other cast of characters are there to provide background and fill out the story a bit, but they don’t really contribute anything much. Crystal, who is desperate to have DB, was more annoying than anything else.
Overall, I enjoyed the book. It was funny and kept my interest until the end.
I received a copy of the book from Netgalley in return for my honest review.
During rehearsals for "The Taming of the Shrew," sparks fly between the fiercely independent leading lady Caitlyn and leading man DB, who is notorious for bedding his costars. As the two stars spar and spark, the cast and crew are by turns amused, disgusted, jealous, bored, and -- in one case -- crazy.
I really wanted to like this book, but from the moment Caitlyn stepped on the stage, my interest in this book plummeted. For start, Caitlyn, who hadn’t acted in over a decade, is suddenly a Shakespearean expert. Also, the love at first site trope just didn’t work for me here.
**I voluntarily read and reviewed this book
Laura Garner has penned a clever adaptation of Taming the Shrew with Caitlin and DB as the likable, and sympathetic main characters. The story gets a little campy toward the end, but what can you expect from a "showmance"? Kiss Me, Caitlyn is a quick, sweet read with plenty of great Shakespeare quotes. Definitely a read that will leave you with a smile on your face.
As a theatre brat I thought this romance would have been right up my alley. I have to be honest, I was gravely disappointed. With the writing errors, the bizarre plot twists, unlikable characters and the heavily religious undertones, Kiss Me Caitlyn was a hot mess!
The tone of the book seems very confused. It doesn’t seem to know if it’s a rom com or a soap opera. I didn’t find the characters particularly likable. You have Caitlyn who is almost thirty but still acts sixteen: with a chip on her shoulder. Then you have Devlin who is hot on the outside but acts like a neckbeard who got friend zoned and is entitled to a relationship. There is little to no development with the romance with no real payoff.
There is also a line of cartoonish side characters, the most laughable being Crystal who is Caitlyn’s nemesis. She is about as multi dimensional as a packing peanut.
There are a couple of “cute” moments but unfortunately it wasn’t enough to make the book worth while. I feel like there is potential but it needs work:
I really wanted to like it, but this was a two star for me.
I voluntarily read this ARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Thank you for the opportunity to read this book! I enjoyed it and thought the ideas behind the plot were sweet. DB has met the woman he used to have a crush on from his teenage years and is instantly in love. His personality is endearing, and his 'dating history' understandable considering his ugly duckling story.
Caitlyn was slightly indecisive when it came to their relationship, though that was due to her being burnt in the past, so again, her reactions were somewhat justified.
Both characters are cute together yet still have some hurdles to overcome, usually in the form of exes and priorities.
I enjoyed the scenes when they were acting together and the chemistry they produced. Overall a fun and lighthearted read. I give it 3.5 stars.
