This book has lovely photographs of trains (mostly in black and white) based on 33 routes based in Europe, Asia, Australia & New Zealand, North & south America, and Africa. The photographs were mainly of the outside of the trains but also included some of the inside of various train cars. There were also some old postcards and posters. While the photos were worth looking at (especially for train lovers), the text was missing from my review copy, so I can't comment on that content.
If you love the outdoor scenery and taking amazing journeys, then you are going to want to check out this book! There are so many fabulous places of yesteryear, and the photographs were amazing!! I fell in love with these pictures, and for anyone who enjoys trains, and taking a trip - this is the perfect book!
My boys and I loved reading through this book and checking out all the photographs inside. This was the perfect way to spend a rainy afternoon indoors!
Beautiful pictures - covers a span of places. Unfortunately, not all pictures are available in the net galley preview, but I saw enough to consider buying it as a present for my father for Christmas!
Who doesn't love old trains and the glamorized journeys that took place on them? Lambert takes the reader on a well researched, informative, and entertaining journey around the world to uncover each regions best trains.
Beginning in Europe, the reader travels through Austria on the Salzkammergut-Lokalbahn that ran from the 1890s to the late 50s. The journey continues on the Orient Express, then travels through France, Spain, Yugoslavia, Great Britan, and concludes in Ireland on the Listowel & Ballybunion Railway that ran from 1888 to 1924.
Lambert then journeys East through India and Pakistan, Indonesia, and concludes his Asian tour on the Hejaz Railway in Jordan and Saudi Arabia. From Asia we cross the ocean to Australia and New Zealand, then East to the Americas.
Starting in Argentina on the Passage to Patagonia, Lambert shows us the best of Chile, Brazil, Paraguay, Canada, and the United States. The reader's journey concludes in Africa with railways in Eritrea, South Africa, and Zimbabwe.
Wonderful photographs, maps, and personal memories accompany the reader with each stop, bringing the railway alive again.
