ARC provided by Netgalley and the Publisher in exchange for an honest review.
I loved this. The art was done great. I love Teen Titans so when I seen this one - I knew it was a must! I think Kami did a great job! I highly recommend!
I enjoyed this allot! I can only imagine how awesome it will look in color! Parts were slow but overall great! Thank you Netgalley for a free ARC IN exchange for an honest review!
I really enjoyed this version of Raven because she is one of my favorite Teen Titans. The drawing style was easy to follow and while there were moments that seemed to lag, I enjoyed the overall storytelling.
Really cute book, the best of the DC Ink books so far. Doesn't try to preach, just let's Raven be herself and that includes her flaws.
I got an eARC of this graphic novel ON RELEASE DAY, so that was a little weird. Most of the things I’ve heard people say about this book weren’t favorable, but I quite enjoyed it. Raven was always my favorite Teen Titan, and I really enjoyed the flavor of this origin story for her. 4 stars.
I didn't get to read this on time, but I bet it was glorious. Thanks so much to NEtgalley for providing this ARC copy.
I enjoyed this one much more than the others I've read so far this year. I loved getting a back story for Raven. The illustrations were fabulous! The story was well thought out and executed fairly well.
Originally I got an ARC of this digitally before it's publish date. Unfortunately it seemed that the file I was sent was corrupted because I was unable to open it on any device.
In any case I've finally gotten my hands on a copy and I'm ready to review! Right off the bat (I swear it's hardly a pun) I am immediately drawn in my the art, with stark contrast from muted to bright colors, each panel is really captured in a way that evokes the emotion of the moment. I like the newness of this story coupled with Raven's OG backstory as well as that little modern feminist flair! I really enjoyed my read and can't wait to meet the rest of the gang throughout the series!
*I received a digital copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review*
As a fan of of both the original Teen Titans show and Teen Titans Go!, I was super excited to receive a copy of this graphic novel! I also LOVE Gabriel Picolo's work. While I felt that the story was a little too juvenile overall, Picolo's art really kept the book flowing for me. I can't wait for the next installment!
This graphic novel is a great look into the start of a wonderful series. I am so excited for the rest of the series. Teen Titans Raven deals with the question of change and transformation, family and memories. Can Raven ever truly be the exact same person as before? While she's making new friends and uncovering secrets, Raven is tasked with knowing both the darkness and the light. Her choices and those around her, illustrate the nature of free will - are we forced into making these choices?
Kami Garcia gives the reader a different take on Raven from Teen Titans. The book opens with Raven losing her foster mom in a car accident and her memory. Most of the rest of the book deals with her learning what she is, who she is from, and how to cope with her abilities. There is romance, betrayal, and confrontation. But Raven is not alone, she has her foster mom's sister and daughter to help along with other New Orleans help in the fight with her dad that makes Prom Night so memorable. Be interesting to see where Raven goes next.
*spoilers*
Beautiful introduction to Raven from Teen Titans, exploring how she fits in amongst other teenagers not threatened by demonic parents. Love the her friend helping her adjust and how Raven deals with loss along with her own memory challenges. Picolo’s art drives a lot of emotion into each scene and the details of environment help inform so much of Raven’s journey throughout as well. Looking forward to learning more about this Raven and her friends and seeing how she rises to the next challenges she faces
The book starts with Raven ominously mentioning her learning something about herself when she gets in a car crash, leaving the readers confused and sets Raven's journey back several steps.
Raven keeps hearing a voice compelling her to do horrible things to the people around her, which is only made worse by the fact that Raven seems to have the ability to will things into happening. When a popular girl is a jerk to Raven, she wishes that the girl would get hurt, and she does.
The voice starts getting more and more intense, and Raven begins seeing a large raven silhouette and having dreams of events that are actually happening. On top of it all, there's this guy who's flirting nonstop with her at school.
The book is a fairly quick read, since it is a graphic novel. Speaking of that, the drawings are absolutely stunning. The book ended on a bit of a cliffhanger and now I have to wait a million months until the sequel?? I can't wait.
I'm also glad the book chose to focus more on the themes of family and sisterhood, as opposed to the love interest that's introduced later on in the novel. I'm extremely glad Raven never ditches her sister for the new guy, and in fact, does the opposite.
The only thing I was disappointed by was the fact that Raven's story fell short in this book. Raven is so much more than what this book depicts her as, so keep in mind this is more of an origin story and a graphic novel, not a regular novel.
Overall, I loved this book and it's definitely something I would reread constantly, so 5/5.
This follows a 17 year old Raven as she is in a tragic accident and loses her memory. As she makes new friends at her new high school and connects with her foster sister she starts to discover who she is and her powers become active.
I loved this graphic novel.. It was the perfect blend of YA slice of Life, but about such a powerful superhero and Teen Titans. I loved the art style and felt it complimented the story so well..
I was pretty excited for my first look at this book. I was already somewhat familiar with Raven's origins, so I was intrigued to see the presentation. You know have to know anything to enjoy this book, though. In fact, it might be more exiting if you were to go in blind. I really liked the inclusion of voodoo, the exploration of the spirit world and psychic powers.
Let me start by saying that I am a HUGE fan of the OG Teen Titans tv show. While this graphic novel doesn't follow the same humor lines or the same backstories as the show, it still managed to carry the same vibe. It's a super quick read and readers get bits and pieces of what is going to get revealed next in the chapters leading up to it. Something that always bothered me in the show was that while Raven's reasons for severe emotional control were touched on in one episode, they very rarely come up outside of that episode. This graphic novel did a great job of explaining why it's so important for Raven to remain in control and what can happen if she can't. I would have liked to see a little bit more in-depth exploration of Raven's travel into high school and the relationships she makes but maybe that will happen in the next volume?
If you’re familiar with the Teen Titans tv show, that’s the version of Raven you’re getting in this comic. She a beloved favorite of many of the shows fans, and for good reason. She’s dark and a bit gloomy, but she’s also very sarcastic and has an entertaining dry-humor.
Again, if you’ve watched the show, this comic won’t bring anything very new to you; it’s basically Raven’s origin story re-vamped. In this version, she’s lost her guardian and her memory in an accident, and the story progresses as Raven re-discovered herself and her past.
So what really makes this comic worth it? The art! Gabriel Picolo did an amazing job using grays and blacks with minimal colors, giving the comic a dark tone without making the actual drawings too dark and muddled to see.
Overall, if the storyline doesn’t grab at you, the art is more than worth buying this comic!
Beautiful artwork. The story really came alive off the pages. Raven is absolutely one of my fav titian's. Enjoyable thank you for allowing me to read.
I got the arc from Netgally ended up not being able to download it so I bought the copy and I loved the art and the way the story evolved throughout the pages!
This won't be too long, but I did want to put some of my thoughts on this down. I really liked this and I want everyone who is on the fence about reading it to go forth and do it! This is not something you'd want to miss.
Raven has just lost her foster mom and now she's trying to piece together her old life, her memory, and everything else. It's so much harder than everyone thinks. But as time goes on she gets closer to her new friends and then bits and pieces start coming back. As it turns out, it's something that she never would have thought was possible.
The best thing about this book was obviously the art. I LOVED Gabriel Picolo's drawings. I went through and read the words and barely glanced at the pictures at first, all so I could go back and look at just the pictures. And the color scheme for Raven was obvious, but there were some panels where he did full color and the rest of the time it was mostly just purples throughout the picture. I thought that was a cool way to do it. Just to mix it up. It looked like watercolors and ink and it was amazing.
As far as the origin story, I really liked this one. It moved quickly and that was awesome. All the panels meant something and had a purpose. The only thing I didn't care for was the fact that once things got interesting, it was over. I wanted to see just a bit more of her powers and what all she could do. But we didn't get to see any of that. Once she knew that she had it, it was over.
The next book in this series that's coming out is Beast Boy and if that one is anything like it's cover, I'm going to like it just as much as this one lol I really hope they do all of them because I love these so far!
