If I hadn’t agreed to read this book to write a review, I wouldn’t have finished it. I just didn’t like either of the main characters. Shawn is such a bro, but he’s trying to mature - it’s just taking him a long time. He has gone from being a star high school baseball player to just being a player who has slept around a whole lot, including with two of his sister’s friends, to realizing that he’s going nowhere fast. Now he’s in Brooklyn trying to make it in a career he rather fell into. He ends up rooming with his sister’s best friend. She’s a very uptight aspiring book editor. All she can think about is her job except when she’s falling into bed with Shawn.
They’re both irritating and immature and give New Adult romances a bad name.
So they go from talking about how they shouldn’t be sleeping together to having lots of sex while she feels guilty. It all blows up, of course, and we’re led to believe that both of them have totally messed up in their jobs over their inevitable break-up drama. Then, poof! [Spoiler Alert] Suddenly they’re together and both are super successful at their jobs. Just like that! I should have skipped all the in-between angst and sex and just skipped to the epilogue.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book that I received from Netgalley; however, the opinions are my own and I did not receive any compensation for my review.
very fast paced and well told. i enjoyed the characters and how they pushed the other to get out of their confort zone and grow up. that they "were't in high school anymore" mentality.
Both Jessie and Shawn come packaged with a lot of emotional baggage. When they are heating up the sheets, they can forget all the reasons why it’s a bad idea. All the other parts of their lives that might fall apart. Despite all these misgivings, they continue to form a bond that goes deeper than what they initially intended. The sparks that fly are intense. When his sister returns earlier than planned it all comes crashing down. The author does an incredible job of playing out the ending scenes that resolves the couples issues and sets them on the path of forever love. It was a classically done plot and worked really well.
She is back! We have a new series, or hopefully a new series with this wonderful book. We meet Jessie who is a perfectionist but not very secure in herself. Her best friend Talia has gone away to London and the person who was supposed to sublease her apartment along with Jessie backed out, and now Jessie is stressing since she can't afford the apartment by herself. Talia's brother ends up taking the sublease without Jessie's knowledge and he gives her the surprise of her life. Jessie does not like Shawn based on her experience with him, or knowledge of him when they were in high school. Shawn could not believe that this was the Jessie he remembered because she was beautiful but he knew that he could not go there since he promised his sister he would not mess with any of her friends he has messed up enough in that avenue. Jessie and Shawn can not keep their hands off each other but they both knew that was not very smart, but they couldn't help it and fell in love until it all blew up in their faces. Now what? Do they lose Talia or do they lose what they have? Well grab a copy and find out, you will Enjoy it!
This is a sizzling best friend older brother romance that will warm you up on a cold winter night! Great chemistry, endearing characters, well-defined world and smoothly done storyline. Absolutely loved it!
Please note that an ARC was generously provided in exchange for an honest review of which this is both honest and completely voluntary.
This book was okay. The writing of the characters made them seem a little juvenile (even though they should not have been and there is obviously sex scenes). That made it a little harder for me to be engaged in the story.
Thank you for this ARC! This is my honest review...
I requested this book because of the title, I found it funny, and I also liked the cover.
I loved that book and couldn't put it down!
It got me hooked right away! You want a roommate... You go to bed one night and get woken up in the middle of the night by someone else getting in bed with you... a man! Your friend's brother you had a thing for years ago... You send him to another room but he's all you can think of and you're all he can dream of...
That could happen, right?! It never does though, oh well.
My first time reading Rebecca Brooks, I don't regret it!
When Jessie's roommate goes overseas for the summer efforts to find a paying roommate fail. Until her roommate comes through at zero her with just the right roomie. Her brother Shawn. He arrives in the middle of the night and crawls into bed only to find he's got the wrong room and wakes Jess up and she gets the shock of her life. He was her high school crush, years ago. Jessie is the quiet, bookworm type who keeps to herself and prefers to be unnoticed, yet she wants to date. She had no idea Shawn was her new roommate until she gets a text from his sister the following morning. Talia also warns her off of Shawn and does the same thing to Shawn. Talia is a bit much. Shawn has moved to NY to start a new job, transferred from New Mexico, he works for a microbrewery that is expanding. It's important to him that he does well at this job. Shawn doesn't have the best history with his family about jobs, college etc. His backstory unfolds throughout the book. .
Things seem to proceed naturally with these two, they get along, are attracted to each other even though they are both wary because of Talia. I loved watching these two grow throughout the story, despite the looming end date, Shawn got Jessie to step out of the box and Jess helped him see himself through her eyes. Talia comes home earlier than planned and blows her mind because she knows they are together. I kind of threw up in my mouth with her outrageous behavior, she was a really selfish little botch. She threw Jessie back lightyears and Shawn running for his life. Honestly, I was so depressed at that point I stopped reading. Picked it back up later and finished it. We watch to see what happens with Shawn and Jessie. Talia apologizes but too little to late for me. This book had a great plot and real depth of character. I hope to see more of the Red Hook Brewery coming from Rebecca!

As a nerdy girl myself, I love stories about other nerdy girls. And this one has a vibrator, so I'm a fan! Meet Jessie, the plain girl, the bookworm, the nerd. She lives together with her roommate and best friend Talia in New York. However, Talia is pursuing a career in dancing and therefore she will be in Londen for the summer. So they desperately need a roommate to help pay for the appartment. When the subletter cancels last minute, Talia decides to rent her room to her brother Shawn. The relationship between Shawn and Talia is strained, because all Talia's friends in high school were affected by the "Shawn effect". Meaning they would ultimately end up being a notch in Shawn's bedpost. And because Shawn went through girls faster than he could change his underwear, this usually resulted in girls resenting the Lassiter family. Only Jessie seemed unaffected, so Talia is very fond of her.
When Shawn stumbles into the appartment for the first time, late at night, and he accidently crashes into the wrong bed (the one with Jessie in it), they both get the shock of their lives: Jessie for being in bed with her secret crush. And Shawn for seeing how the little ugly duckling has grown into a beautiful woman.
During this romantic story, we can see both Shawn and Jessie starting to gravitate towards another, while they both do their best to deny it.
A wonderful story about growing up, finding out one's dreams and opposites attraction. Four out of five stars from me and a special thank you to Netgalley for providing the arc.
3.5 stars
Definitely some spicy scenes, but this book has a lot of sweetness between Shawn and Jessie too.
Some of my favorite moments are when they really open up to each other and share both the good and bad in their lives. It really showed how they connected and that balance is important in one's life.
I enjoyed this story and am looking forward to checking out more of Rebecca Brooks' books!
The first thing that made me add this book to my TBR was the blurb, the second was the teaser, which was really hilarious.
The book itself was very easy to read, the chemistry was there since the beginning but it wasn’t one of those insta-love romances. Of course, once they got together the usual drama began – ”We can’t be together, you’re my best friend’s brother” and ”She won’t approve of us”. Spoiler alert: She didn’t.
I kind of hated Talia (Shawn’s sister) because when she found out because she was just so selfish. We’re talking ”How could you do that to me” and ”I thought you knew better”, she made Jessie looked so guilty even though she didn’t do nothing wrong. At least at the end, she admitted her mistake so Shawn and Jessie could be together.
4 stars.
When Jessie is in desperate need of a roommate,, her real roommate, Talia, sends her brother, Shawn, without telling Jessie first. When Shawn shows up in the middle of the night, he enters what he thinks is his room and ends up in bed with Jessie. From there this novel is very predictable and filled with lots of sex.
The last third of this book was wonderful and made up for the first part. Once Jess and Shawn's secret relationship is outed, their world begins to collapse. This was the best part of this book and was engaging and tugged on my heart strings. It made me feel invested in the characters and care about their HEA ending.
If you enjoy the genre, this is well worth reading and deserves a place on your TBR list.
A sexy, standalone best friend’s older brother romance. This is the first book I have read from the author and I enjoyed the story. I am a sucker for this trope.
Jessie just landed her dream job and she is determined to be successful in it. Shawn, is the older brother of Jessie’s best friend, Talia. Talia is in London and she needs someone to sublet her room in the apartment she shares with Jessie, enter Shawn.
Their initial meeting was priceless, I mean he literally just crawled in to bed with her. These two are complete opposites of each other and they know they shouldn’t be together. The “Shawn Effect” wins again.
Though, this story was somewhat predictable it was still a fun, sweet, sexy read. Watching Jessie and Shawn’s relationship to grow was sweet. For anyone who is a fan of the best friends older brother romance this is definitely one to check out.
Wrong Bed, Right Roommate by Rebecca Brooks a five-star read that is so, so right. This was such a great story, yes it was a little predictable in places, but not so badly that it wasn’t still a lot of fun, and overall so good that I was sucked in and didn’t care. There was something special about Shawn Lassiter and how he went from being the boy behind ‘The Shawn Effect’ to become the man he was at the end of the story his journey was just simply sublime. What I would give to have a slurp of one of those Thunder brews, I could almost taste some of them on my tongue. I am so glad that I found this author and I can’t wait to read more from them as I enjoyed the writing so much.
Jessie Santana is at her wit's end. She needs a new roommate stat or she could lose her place. As if she isn't stressed enough, she starts a new job in the morning. Imagine her shock when she wakes up with a stranger in her bed, only to discover it's her new roommate, her best friend's brother, Shawn Lassiter.
Jessie has had it bad for Shawn since she was a teenager, but after he screwed over a few of their close friends, things haven't been the same. Jessie has tried her best to ignore him, but when her friend gives Shawn her room for rent, Jessie can hardly refuse. After all, she'll barely see him, right?
WRONG BED, RIGHT ROOMMATE was not what I was expecting at all. The title misled me a bit, however, the novel was a delight. Jessie and Shawn don't know what hit them. They are blindsided by their attraction to one another. Shawn is the perfect guy to get Jessie to cut loose and let her hair down. Jessie is the perfect counterbalance for Shawn. WRONG BED, RIGHT ROOMMATE is a great way to while away the afternoon. I give it a 3.5 star rating. Author Rebecca Brooks shows promise in the contemporary romance genre. I look forward to her next book.
Shawn has a hard time proving that he's changed and not the mess that he's been. Jessie seems to have it all together. I love when her imperfections come through. Then she messes up big time. I was thinking she's going to have to do something spectacular to redeem herself in my eyes. Boy, did she then some.
The story of Shawn and Jessie. He is her best friends brother - she had a crush on him years ago but he never showed any interest in her - until now. But the one thing he promised his sister was that he'd stay away from her friends. They start a fling one night after a few too many drinks and then can't keep away from each other, but what will happen when Talia returns and confronts them?
I am hoping Talia gets her own book next!
Jessie shares an apartment with her best friend, Talia, but when Talia goes on tour for a couple of months they need to get another roommate to sublet the apartment. Talia's older brother, Shawn, ends up moving in to Jessie's dismay. She used to have a crush on him in high school but he didn't show any interest in her. Things have changed and Shawn is wildly attracted to Jessie now. So they begin a relationship that they know Talia wouldn't like. Shawn has slept with a lot of women in the past and his sister has had to deal with the fallout. Cute romance.
Good book! This is Shawn and Jessie book, Shawn is a brewer at a place called thunder in Brooklyn and Jessie edits books for famous authors. They've known each other for years as Jessie best friend is Shawn sister. Shawn is known as being the heartbreak king and a love them and leave them kind of guy he ends up having to stay with Jessie while his sister is out of town. Jessie knows not to fall for Shawna charms his sister has warned her and she's seen it all herself! This book had a little bit of everything! It was funny, heartbreaking, heartache, and some drama thrown in! I definitely recommend reading this book! Don't miss out ! Thank you Netgalley and entangled for sharing this book with me!
Wrong Bed, Right Roommate is a sexy standalone best friend’s older brother / roommate romance. Jessie is an introverted bookworm who is dedicated to being successful at her new job . Shawn, Jessie’s best friend’s older brother, was known as the good-looking, popular baseball player at high school who never took notice of Jessie. Circumstances led to him being her temporary roommate.
I like how the two are opposites and yet they gravitate towards each other. I also liked how Shawn owns up to his faults at the beginning of the book and meets them head on - striving towards maturity, trying to prove himself at a new job, and avoiding the playboy lifestyle. Jessie, I liked her as a heroine, but sometimes annoyed me during the first quarter fo the book because she jumped to conclusions and was so quick to assume that Shawn couldn’t possibly have changed over the years.
While this book was predictable, I still found it to be an enjoyable read I received this book for free and I voluntarily leave this review.
