What Happens In France is a brilliantly written story which predominantly features Bryony Masters and her quest to find her sister, Hannah. Bryony has a blog and uses the usual social media, but nothing has worked, so far, so she aims to reach a wider audience for her search by applying for a brand new television game show. I thought this was a genius idea for a story and it works really well.
This might be a romantic comedy, but it has deeper storylines throughout. The guilt Bryony has carried around with her for years is heart-breaking. She didn't have the easiest childhood and this shows in her character. She's quite vulnerable and very likeable. I really felt for her. With her father being so poorly she is becoming increasingly desperate to find her sister as she believes time is running out to make everything right with their world again.
There are some fabulous characters in this story (The pug was one of my favourites!) and the actual game show process was brilliant. I didn't think much of the host, but he made an interesting character all the same. If someone really gets on my nerves I know they have been written well! I loved the way Bryony and Lewis bounced off one another (for want of a better expression!). I was really hoping for Bryony to find happiness. Although she seems content with her career as an English Teacher she obviously craves more out of life.
I did love the friendship between Bryony and Melinda. Some of their drunken nights in sound a bit like some of ours with our close friends! They obviously have that kind of relationship where they can be completely honest with each other also, which is lovely.
I will be more than happy to recommend this story. I have really enjoyed Carol Wyer's writing style and totally expect to enjoy her other books (which are on my list!). This story has made me smile, laugh out loud at times and cry. It's an excellent read!
Many thanks to the author and publisher for my review copy via Netgalley.

First of all thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book for a review!

What Happens in France is a great read with a story that is easy to follow. Bryony is in turmoil after her father suffers a serious stroke. Bryony's sister Hannah disappeared years ago and all Bryony wants is for her to return. Bryony decides to start blogging about her life in hopes of Hannah returning to their lives. Bryony recalls Hannah's love of game shows and decides to put herself out there for a game show audition in their town.

Without spoilers, I highly recommend this read. You start falling in love with the friendships Bryony gains and how dedicated she is to her family and finding her best friend and sister, Hannah. I highly recommend for a funny, light-hearted, family read.

#WhatHappensInFrance #NetGalley Wow, what a fabulous read!! Complete opposite to my normal crime/thriller genre, this book was heartbreaking and uplifting, poignant and hilarious and I thoroughly enjoyed it!. Such an easy to read book, I devoured the pages late into the night. I loved the characters of Bryony and Lewis but also the other characters such as Jim and Oscar and especially Biggie Small. I thought the main thread of the game show was a unique twist and made the plot even more enjoyable. Carol asks in her authors notes whether there should be another novel featuring the likes of Oscar and Biggie Small and I would say hell yes, go for it! I have not read any books by this author before but I will definitely be doing so in the future. A very well deserved 5 stars!

Bryony Masters is a 30 year old woman dealing with her father's health after he's suffered from multiple strokes. All her father asks for in the wake of his illness is to see his daughter, Hannah. After a devastating accident injures Bryony in her youth and Hannah feels the brunt of the blame, she runs away from home and never looks back. No one in Bryony's family has seen or heard from Hannah in years.

In a desperate attempt to make contact with her sister, Bryony decides to try out for a game show, What Happens In..., and ask the world to be on the look out for Hannah and ask her to come home to her family.

In the process, Bryony makes new friends, discovers that not everything is as it seems, and you can find happiness in the most unlikely of places.

This was a cute rom-com book. Nothing spectacular or groundbreaking about it, but definitely a comfy, fluffy filler book. If you need a break in your reading regiment and want something "feel good," I'd recommend this.

Part-romantic comedy, part-mystery centring around the likeable character of teacher, Bryony whose life is overshadowed by the disappearance of her sixteen year-old sister, Hannah thirty years previously, Determined to solve the mystery of what happened to her and provide closure to her devastated parents, Hannah devises a plan to sign up for a gameshow - with the aim of drawing attention to her missing sister. Gradually, the truth unravels through flashbacks and diary entries. An undemanding but satisfying read which had me rooting for Hannah to find love and reconciliation with every turn of the page.

A cute quick read, had a few problems with this book with going into too much detail at times and sometimes bit unbelievable in character reactions or behaviour, but a nice light read

Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for a free copy for an honest opinion

I was sent a copy of What Happens in France by Carol Wyer to read and review by NetGalley.
This novel was hyped as ‘a laugh out loud romantic comedy’, unfortunately I didn’t laugh out loud – in fact I didn’t even chuckle. It definitely is a romantic comedy though and is pleasant enough to be a light distraction as a holiday read. I personally found it rather predictable, and seemingly contrary to the views of most other readers I don’t think it really deserves any more than 3 stars, sorry!

This is undoubtedly the cutest book I found this year. Starting from the enticing cover (who could resist a pug?), it takes you into a roller coaster ride fun, laughter and a taste of tears. We could pretty much guess the winners of the game show and the ending was also downright predictable, but that didn't prevent me from getting emotional at the concluding chapter.
Bryony is both intelligent and witty, and Lewis handsomely completes the pair. The understanding we have in the beginning of Lewis being gay really helps one to concentrate on the game show and Hannah exclusively. A romance in the mix would have turned it quite awkward as it happened towards the end. But a story about a fun companionship, their quirky behaviours and humorous articulations can never be missed.
This review won't be complete without a mention of Biggie Smalls, who dominates the cover page (for obvious reasons). After all, he is the one who brought the perfect prize to his newfound human companion.
Overall, an enjoyable story with an idyllic setting.

I just LOVED this book!!! It was a combination of a great family story, the Amazing Race vibes, and a good love story to complete the book. I really fell in love with Oscars character though out this book, he was such a love! Definitely would recommend this book!

Cute story, though I felt story could’ve been tighter and less long winded. And the love scenes felt a bit “twee”

Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to read this book in exchange for my review.

Charming story filled to the brim with great characters, plenty of adventure, romance and fun. The thread holding it together is the fact that a woman is looking for her sister who left home 30 years ago and all they way through we are left guessing as to whether she is going to achieve her aim.

An enjoyable read and my first from the writer Carol Wyer, that made me chuckle several times. I read this in one sitting; it was well paced with enough balance with the humour and the more serious notes and the two plot lines worked together very well. I enjoyed the 'trip' around France and the gentle romance; this is not my usual read and I found I was pleasantly surprised by it - I'd definitely recommend this book of tears and laughter. Thank you NetGalley and Canelo for giving me the chance to read and review.

This has been a hilarious and tearful read, it has been a fantastic book, I enjoyed every page!
I was totally delighted with this book, it is refreshing and different from the books I am used to, I was glued to it since the beginning. Do you want to know why? The plot…. it was totally a surprise (lately I try not to read the summary of the book before I start, I like surprises!) and it was a nice one.
Bryony Masters has spent the last years of her life searching for her missing sister, she left when she was 15…
But now, it seems more urgent to find her, their father has suffered a stroke and they are missing her so much… She has a crazy idea in mind, to appear in a new TV program called What Happens In… and ask for help nationwide. She thinks that if she exposes her case, maybe someone will recognise her sister Hannah and they will contact her. So, when she discovers that she has been accepted in the program, she starts working on her plan. The only think that she doesn’t expect is to have a handsome partner and some very friendly competitors, that will help her as much as they can!
Of course the tests they will have to solve will not be easy, so winning the competition will be a big challenge, but don’t worry, the tests are hilarious, you’ll enjoy all of them! And remember that you will be taking a small trip to France with them, so enjoy the holidays!
There will be a little bit of romance, yes, but is not the main part of the story and even if they make a cute couple, it’s not the interesting part of the plot, is Bryony and her sister Hannah… And discover if they will reunite after so many years… What do you think?
You’ll have to read What Happens In France to know the end, enjoy!

I loved this book. It is all chick lit should be - light, flows well, romance, informative, - just right for lying on the beach or curled up by the fire. It is about Bryony who is looking for her sister who ran away from home. She decides to go on a game show in order to raise awareness, hoping that her sister will see her and make contact.. I loved getting an insight into behind the scenes of a game show and why people want to enter. The show is in France and we get to visit unusual places there.

Any TV producers watching,? Can you make this game show. It would be a hit!

This book is so different from the other carol wyer books I have read. When Brynoy starts looking for her long lost sister she applies to go on a game show, where she meets Lewis. Together they set off to look for her Tv quiz mad sister, it’s a heartwarming book funny also love, it’s gripping, heartbreaking at times yet although it’s so different from her normal books, I genuinely am glad I didn’t miss out, it’s a different side to the Carol Wyer books. Yet this kept me gripped which did surprise me. With a mixture of emotions from tears to laughter, and about family. Can Brony find her sister before it’s too late after her farther had a stroke. it’s most definitely a book I recommend. A massive thank you Carol Wyer for such a beautiful heartwarming surprise of a book for me to have read. It’s been a real pleasure reading this book, I genuinely believe your fans and other to read this book,

I found this book easy to read and I was interested in the behind the scenes workings of the game show. I wasn’t entirely a fan of the main characters, they didn’t feel very real by the end of the book and I wasn’t particularly invested in their happiness. Overall it was a fun read.

What Happens in France is the latest book from Carol Wyer. I really hated to see this story come to an end. Great characters, a little romance, and a small mystery make this book difficult to put down. Fair warning, along with some laughs there may be a few tears. I was given a copy to review.

This is a delightful story. Bryony was six years old when her sister Hannah ran away from home, and she always blamed herself for making her sister unhappy enough to leave. It has caused a great deal of misery in the family, their father had been a headmaster, but had a nervous breakdown, and they had moved away so that their neighbours didn’t know their story. Bryony started a blog to try and get help in finding Hannah, and with her father being very ill after suffering a stroke, and he is grieving for His lost daughter; it has become even more important to find her.

Bryony reads about a new quiz show about to take place, What Happens In ... and decides to apply, if she gets selected it might give her a platform to reach more people in her search. She goes to dinner with her best friend Melinda and her husband Sean, and meets Lewis, a friend of Sean’s, assumed to be gay. They have a really hilarious evening playing a murder game between courses. Melinda helps Bryony with her application form, and she gets selected for an interview in Birmingham. When she gets there she discovers Lewis is also being interviewed. They both get chosen, and become one of the teams of two. There are eight teams, and each day one team will be eliminated until there is a final winning pair.

The bulk of the book is taken up with the show, and it is absolutely hilarious. They have a different type of task every day. Bryony and Lewis do quite well, they don’t win everything, but manage to speak about Hannah a few times. Do they win? You have to read it to find out. I will say that this is for the most part a really feel-good book with a very happy ending for quite a few people. A good and satisfying read, I will look out for this writer in the future.

I found What Happens in France to be an OK novel. I liked the premise of a woman using her status as a game show contestant as a platform to try and find her long, lost, runaway sister to be an interesting idea. The novel tended to be a tad slow and repetitious. I am, honestly, not a fan of the same details being written about over and over. I can see how this tendency would be used to drive home the desire of Bryony to contact her sister.
The real depth of the story comes from the budding relationship between Bryony and Lewis, her show partner. He carries pain from a recent breakup that tempers Bryony’s thoughts about their chances. When the ex intrudes, it all blows up for them and she is certain all is lost.
