FORGET ME NOT is a great psychological suspense novel. Claire Allan did not disappoint. I am glad I was picked to read this one because it is amazing. It has bit of everything, suspense, heart and great characters.
Wow brilliant story and the first I've read from this author. It definitely won't be the last. Lots of twists and turns and very gripping right from the start. Will be recommending this to all my family and friends
This book had me engrossed from the first page.
Claire is found by Elizabeth walking her dog she has horrific knife wounds but she manages to whisper two haunting words.
Rachel & Julie , Claire’s best friends are distraught and can’t believe that someone would want to hurt wonderful Claire.
Claire was keeping a secret about the man she was seeing . Was he married or did he have something to do with her murder. Rachel also has been seeing a man called Micheal behind her husbands back. And Julie has her own secrets.
Elizabeth lost her daughter two years earlier has this got something to do with Claire’s death ? Or is it just another tragedy in Elizabeth’s life.
You will keep turning the pages to see what happens in this brilliant book.
This is the first Claire Allan book that I've read and I have to say I'll definitely be reading more of her work. 'Forget me Not' is a fast-paced and enthralling read. Immediately you are in the heart of the action and it doesn't seem to let up until the very end of the book.
Elizabeth is walking her dog when she comes across the body of a young woman, Clare, who has beaten and left with only minutes to live. Upon ringing the emergency services and trying to comfort Clare in her dying moments she hears the immortal words 'warn them' as Clare draws her final breath. Elizabeth is distraught and confused - warn who and why?
Switching narrators we then meet Rachel, a friend of Clare's, who now must deal with the aftermath of her best friend's death whilst discovering that she and her family may not be safe from the murderer who so brutally took her best friend's life.
What is the link between Elizabeth, Clare and Rachel? Nothing in life is every coincidental and as the story unfolds we find out just how and why these women have been targeted.
'Forget me not' is truly captivating and so incredibly paced that I actually felt that I was in the midst of the action myself. I would 100% recommend.
Forget Me Not is a deliciously creepy psychological thriller that is exquisitely plotted with a captivating storyline ! Simply amazing ! I highly recommend ! Thanks to Netgalley and Avon Books UK for the opportunity to read and review this book ! Opinions are my own ! #Netgalley #AvonBooksUK #ForgetMeNot
Captivating!
Thats how I would ‘sum up’ this 3rd novel from Claire Allen, the term ‘couldn’t put it down’ turns up a lot in reviews ( mine too! ) BUT this really was the case for this book...
The story starts with retired nurse, Elizabeth, finding a brutally murdered woman and hearing her last words...these words send a chill down her spine, little knowing the consequences these words will have on her life......introduce 2 best friends of the victim, in shock and disbelief at what has happened and then realising the killer has them in their sights and you have the basis for this exciting and scary tale!
Actions that people were not aware they made come back home to roost and no one is safe, innocent or guilty and the book takes you along at motorway speed through page after page of this dark claustrophobic thriller
Characters are precise and well written and almost instantly easy to ‘get to know’, the writing flows easily and the whole thing is immersive and enjoyable
A great book with a surprising conclusion and as say really was a pleasure to read and enjoy
10/10 5 Stars
A strange, poignant beginning sets the scene for this psychological thriller set in Northern Ireland. The sense of loss draws you in and you want to know why this woman had to leave her baby.
Elizabeth, one of the main points of view in the story, is living a semi-reclusive life, she feels safe in her remote home but makes the effort to get out to walk her beloved dog. Her grisly discovery, leaves her shocked and fearful, wondering what the last words of the dying woman meant.
Rachel is the second main point of view, one of a group of three friends, who are all affected by Elizabeth's discovery at the side of the road.
All of the protagonists, fall into the category of unreliable narrators, they are emotionally damaged, flawed and hiding secrets.
Each chapter reveals a little more of the truth, but also more questions and misinformation. Everyone appears guilty at some point in the story, but are they capable of killing?
The suspense is layered and relentless, increasing as the story progresses, this has an addictive quality that makes you read on, even though you may not like what is happening or how some of the protagonists behave and interact.
Well-written, this fast-paced story maintains its menacing quality, and keeps its most destructive secrets, until the final twist. as a good psychological thriller should.
I received a copy of this book from Avon Books UK via NetGalley in return for an honest review.
Forget Me Not had me from the first page, you are thrown right into it, I hoped this was going to be a good read after reading “My Name Is Rose” and remembered how well that had been written, so it was relief to be thrown right in because this was as good.
Elizabeth is up early and walking her dog when she comes across a woman who has been brutally attacked, she is just about to give up her fight for life when she manages to utter the words, “Warn them”, what could it mean?
Elizabeth is dragged into the investigation as it becomes knowledge that her daughter tragically took her own life leaving her husband and children behind but was friends with the deceased at school, then another woman who was best friends with the deceased is under protection due to threats her family have received. Who is doing this and why?
This was a fairly fast paced thriller that I enjoyed from beginning to end, the writing style was up my street and there were a lot of twists and turns along the way to keep you intrigued.
I would like to thank Netgalley and Avon Books UK for this ARC I received in exchange for an honest review.
What a heart thumper!
In true Claire Allen style, this one kicks off with high adrenaline delivery and never lets off the gas.
Elizabeth, banana bread lover, is walking her dog one morning when she discovers Clare by the side of the road, savagely attacked and left for dead. Moments before dying Clare whispers to Elizabeth, "Warn them..."
Warn who??
About what??
Clare's friend Rachel, already reeling from the recent loss of her mother, is already struggling when learns about the death of her good friend.
Everyone has secrets, everyone is in the cross hairs and try as you might to figure this out, the ending is gritty and unexpected.
Thank you to Claire Allen, Avon Books UK, and NetGalley for giving me this digital ARC in exchange for an honest review!
Whilst I did enjoy reading this book I didn’t love it. I found it a bit clichéd and obvious and I wish the characters had a bit more depth to them. The pace of the book is ok but I have read other books by Claire Allen and preferred them. Whilst the idea and premise of the book was good I just wanted more.
I did enjoy the differing viewpoints but maybe I would have enjoyed it more if the author had captured more of how it was at school.
My main issue with this book (and with quite a few thrillers) is that I felt the ending was all a bit neat and too tidy and happened quite abruptly. It was all a bit far-fetched and over done.
Thank you to net galley for providing me with an ARC.
Wow you had me at the first page. I couldnt put it down. Full of tension and heart stopping moments. I will definately be reading more of your books. This book is all about good and bad decisions . I loved the cover . I always get sucked in by a good cover.
Elizabeth finds the badly injured body of a woman near her home. The woman, Clare, dies holding Elizabeth's hand. Her dying words "Warn them"
Rachel is one of Clare's best friends and devastated by her death. Her home life is already in turmoil, her husband works away during the week and she has grown close to another man.
Her other best friend Julie goes to pieces, drinking and crying so Rachel turns to Michael, her other man, for comfort.
With few leads the Police are struggling to find out why Clare was killed. She had been seeing a new man but wouldn't tell her friends anything about him.
Then Rachel and Julie receive flowers with cryptic messages, the same type of flowers that were left at site of murder.
Elizabeth's daughter, Laura, killed herself two years earlier and while looking through an old photo album Elizabeth discovers a missing photo that points to Clare, Julie and Rachel being at school with her daughter. Is this the link the Police have been looking for?
When Rachel is kidnapped the police must throw everything at uncovering what could have happened in the past to put the women in such danger now before Rachel becomes the next victim.
I loved this! Great story, strong characters. Claire Allan is fast becoming one of my "Must reads"
My thanks to Avon Books U.K. for an eARC via NetGalley of Claire Allan’s ‘Forget Me Not’ in exchange for an honest review.
This novel opens with the dying thoughts of murder victim, Clare. She is found by Elizabeth, who had been walking her dog, and it is to her that Clare whispers her dying words: “Warn them”.
From there the narrative is split between the perspectives of Elizabeth and Rachel, Clare’s best friend. Of the two Rachel has the most space.
Lots to please in this novel including stoic, efficient police investigators and a suitably sleazy tabloid reporter sniffing round for scoops. There is also plenty of dialogue, which made the pacing feel very immediate. I found it a very readable thriller with plenty of twists.
A solid read and I will certainly be interested in reading her earlier books as well as future projects.
This is a wonderful psychological thriller that had me gripped from the very first pages .Elizabeth is walking her dog early one morning when she finds the barely alive body of a young woman who whispers "warn them" before she dies and so begins a brilliant story full of twists and turns ,a real roller-coaster of a ride that kept me guessing almost to the end .The story is cleverly woven between all the main characters and told through Elizabeth and Rachel a friend of the victim .I really enjoyed reading this book and the ending was unexpected .Many thanks to the Publisher ,the Author and NetGalley for my copy in return for an honest review .
Brilliant thriller that keeps you on your toes from the very first page.
I just could not put it down and read it in one day.
Oh my, this is a tense, taut and twisty thriller with a chilling premise and suspense by the bucketload. Once I had turned the first few pages it had me hook, line and sinker, and I was completely engrossed. I cannot explain to you just how much intense suspense there is amongst these pages, but I found my heart pounding at certain points as the tension was ratcheted up. This is Ms Allan's third novel and it's clear from the opening chapter that this her best to date. It is a race-against-the-clock type of thriller but has mystery elements and emotional aspects to it too. The story unravels its secrets in a fascinating way and both the characterisation and plot are more detailed than in her previous books.
As you would imagine, there are a good few twists in the tale and I found it a highly entertaining, easy read for a spring afternoon. There's never a dull moment as something major happens in every single chapter, and Allan is adept at showing the panic, fear and utter confusion of those involved in the case as well as those on the periphery of it. There is also an underlying menace which runs the duration of the book and creates an ominous atmosphere. This is a potent mix of, mystery, emotion, suspense and great plotting. The only real issue I had with it was the three main characters were rather juvenile and often came across as spoiled and arrogant, but overall a very solid read. Many thanks to Avon for an ARC.
Forget Me Not opens with a mystery, a mystery character is explaining how she disappeared. But who is she? All is revealed in the coming pages, as the story unfolds brilliantly.
It is clear to me while reading this Claire's third thriller that, even though I loved her first two books in the genre, that this is her best to date. The character development and plot were excellent throughout, with the storyline keeping me guessing the whole way through. There are more than a couple of surprises along the way, which meant that I was glued to this one (no surprises there though).
The story alternates between two main characters, and I think it is paced brilliantly. There were no suddenly jarring moments, which made it quite an easy read - which is what I needed at the time.
I loved the characters and how they developed throughout - especially the two main protagonists. Keep an eye out for a returning character from a previous book here - she's just as brilliant as before and would love to see more of her.
Forget Me Not is a thoroughly enjoyable and quick "whodunnit". I read it over a couple of days while on holiday, and I think if you are looking for a book at the airport this summer, you should definitely be picking this one up. (Even if you aren't going on holiday, buy it anyway, you won't be disappointed) Highly recommended for fans of the genre.
This book pulled me in, my world went spiraling out. I wanted to live inside the book, be with the characters, peruse them, get to know what they had been hiding for so long.
"Secrets in the past never remain buried long.
Murder and fear make the thriller-y song
Do photos stare at you
Do flowers speak to you
Corny messages they may sound
Poems from unknown keep you bound
Look on the inside more than out
Get to the truth in a bout"
This was the basic arc of the book. 3 best friends, one killed and the other 2 seemed to be at risk. An old mate from school who commuted suicide seemed to be link. How, when, where, why were the the cops had to solve.
Claire Allan was fabulous in her writing, clear and foreboding. Every chapter was like a layer uncovered. The panic and fear leapt off the pages to grip me by the throat. Casting a doubt on every character was blissful fun. The women in the book were flawed, it seemed they were falling apart, their friendships frayed. And they touched my heart with this vulnerability.
From beginning to end the book kept me tied to it. I had work but called in sick because the book called me more. This was the call of the trifecta siren, the perfect combination of mystery, suspense, and emotion.
For me, no two ways about it, I loved the book completely, and this was the best book by Claire Allan.
This was a good story, well told. The pace is brisk and keeps the reader engaged and the twist is suitably twisty to satisfy lovers of this genre. For me though, whilst I enjoyed it, I didn't LOVE it. The issue was, I think, that I didn't find Rachel, Julie or Elizabeth very likeable people. Of the three, Elizabeth garnered most of my sympathy. But Rachel came across as a whiny, entitled 40 something and Julie was just a lush. The huge discrepancy in age between Rachel's children was never fully addressed and confounded me. Their husbands lack of compassion when faced with the death of their wives' best friend was also, for me, genuinely upsetting. I feel you have to make a connection to the book's characters to care about the outcome, and I never felt that connection. Sorry, but you can't please everyone I guess. It won't stop me trying another book by Ms Allan as her writing style is excellent.
Warn them. Those words, whispered by a dying woman, turn out to be critical. Elizabeth, who was out with her dog when she found her, has been dealing with the trauma of her daughter's death several years ago and now there's an odd link. This is told in two voices- the other being Rachel, who was Clare's friend. Lots of secrets begin to spill out as the police try to find the villain. This is hard to review without spoilers but suffice it to say that fans of the twisty thriller will find this a rewarding read. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. A page turner good for travel.
