Loved the first half of this book - less so the second. I appreciate that the author was taking us on a journey intended to thrill but this went a little too far into the realms of improbability and lost my investment. Such a shame because I was really enjoying it until that point.
Due to a passing in the family a few years ago and my subsequent health issues stemming from that, I was unable to download this book in time to review it before it was archived as I did not visit this site for years after the bereavement. Thank you for the opportunity.
This was a brilliant read. As soon as I started reading this book I just knew I was going to love it. Highly recommended
A book of two halves, the first half being where it peaks although the second did keep me reading to the end. A decent plot, ok characters.
This is a romantic mystery. It stats off crazy. Our bride-to-be wakes up, with.... a stranger! Yikes! But then there are people dead, and a mystery is soon rolling in full swing. Some characters are deeper than others, and there are some twists that I liked. I did wish that all the characters were a bit deeper, but I think it was done for balance. Over all, it turned out to be an interesting read, and didn't give out a HEA ending. That I do have to share, because it's not going exactly where you think it is.
Thanks to Net Galley for my copy of this book. A positive review is never required.
Six friends. Three secrets. One murder.
That says it all. In The Last Night Out you are taken on a roller coaster of twists and turns leaving wanting more. Great storyline!
I have SO wanted to love this murder mystery. Bachelorette party ending with one of six friends being murdered and no one knows nothing - this is straight-up my alley. And the first half of the novel goes quite well - maybe more human drama than real investigation, but this is fine, I like to know the background of the characters and there are some fine possibilities. But then the book turns the worst way into the sea of out-of-the-blue motives and unbelievable killers, with the ending tying the subplots absolutely randomly. And yeah - the morale of the story obviously is "be with the one you have better sex with".
A decent thriller telling the events of twenty plus years ago involving the nightout of six female friends ending in ther death of one of them.
Loads of lies and interesting characters which the author develops very well.
All round a decent read and four stars.
I received a digital arc of this from netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
The blurb for this book sounded great and right up my street. I thought I wouldn't be able to put it down. But I was wrong. Whilst it was a good book it didn't keep my interest. I wasn't rapidly reading the pages to find out what happened next. It seemed a slow burner to me and especially initially it was very slow to get going.
Not a bad read but it's not a book i'll remember months down the line.
While the premise of this story is very good, I am just so tired reading about women who participate in such debauchery. It’s just not entertaining to me. However, the book was full of secrets, manipulation, and interesting twists. The story is unpredictable and has you guessing until you’ve turned the last page and closed the book. I love it when an author accomplishes that. I’m just ready for a book that does not encourage the type of behavior these women exhibited. Really! You wake up the morning after your bachelor party in bed with someone who is not your fiance?!
Thank you to NetGalley and Severn House Publishers for my advanced review copy. All opinions and thoughts are my own.
I really struggled to get through this book. There wasn't one likable character. They all had secrets and they were doozy secrets and even their friendships felt forced. I would try another book by this author but I didn't care for this one very much.
This book was alright. Not a single character was likable, and it didn't exactly blow me away, but it held my interest throughout. Plus the ending was actually a surprise and caught me off guard, so kudos for the author on that point. But overall, this was less of a thriller and more regular fiction. I wasn't super suspenseful, even though the premise seems like it will be.
This was not what I was expecting at all; it's not a cute, funny romcom, but a gripping thriller. I couldn't put it down, pulling an all-nighter to get it finished.
I enjoyed this book, it had a lot of twists and turns that kept me guessing until the very end. I would definitely read another book by this author in the future.
I was hooked right from the beginning of this book. A group of girlfriends go out partying for a bridal shower. One ends up murdered. The characters are well written The story is filled with drugs, sex, and violence, and some good plot twists that kept me engrossed. Highly recommended.
Thank you netgalley and publisher for the early copy!
I checked the first few chapters, however, I decided to put it down.
A woman decides the time is right to look back at the night that changed the future for her and her band of friends in a very profound way. It was her bridal shower night that went wrong. A friend dead, others close to her suspected of being the murderer, mysterious characters who might or might not be involved, it just confounds everything. Told in alternating chapters by the various characters, it all weaves the night together into a powerful ending. Did she go through with the wedding? Who was the murderer? Why was her friend murdered? You get your answers and your ending, but it might not be what you wanted or expected. Just read it already!
This book had me hooked from the beginning. It seems all of the characters had secrets which made the mystery of whodunnit even better. Good amount of twists and turns. I didn’t see the ending coming. Thanks to NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book.
The characters in this book grabbed my attention immediately and brought me into both their individual and collective stories just like I was a part of the group.
Friends for a multitude of years, Maggie, Carol Anne, Angela, Natasha, and Suzanne could not be more different. And while I did not personally identify with any of the characters, I still found myself being drawn further and further into the story with each turn of the page.
I only skimmed a very little bit (probably close to three paragraphs) but it was only because I was so anxious to find out what was going to happen next. What decisions would Maggie make? What secrets that have been buried so deep for so long are going to be revealed? I loved the pace of this book and I never found myself being bored. In fact, I found myself reading way past my usual bedtime several nights in a row in quite a frenzied pace! 🙂
As you can see from my rating, I highly recommend this book. If you love stories about friendships, plots that are difficult to figure out, and if you are in a deep reading slump, you will enjoy this book. It’s a mystery, a thriller, and at times gives glimpses of some truly twisted love stories.
Thank you, Catherine O’Connell for an extremely entertaining book that will help many people out of their reading slumps! 🙂
Maggie is getting married in a few weeks, so she goes out to celebrate one last time with her closest girlfriends from high school, Angie, Suzanne, Natasha, Kelly and Carol Ann. Several terrible things happen that night, with the worst leading to the death of one of her friends. Who killed Angie? Was it random or is there a chance another one of them might be next?
The Last Night Out is told from the point of view of all of the ladies, along with a few husbands, boyfriends and the cops. I liked that about it - hearing the same events but from others' perspectives was interesting. This novel is set in the late 80's, before cell phones and social media, so it's eye opening to see how much our world has changed. The well developed characters are engaging and entertaining, with so many twists and turns I didn't expect. The story ends after a few weeks, but continues with an epilogue that wraps each character's story twenty years later, which I loved.
