My Favorite Cowboy is the 3rd book in Donna Grant’s Heart of Texas series. Veterinarian Audrey Martinez has been called in by her father’s dear friend David Warner, owner of the auction house, when several of the horses become suddenly ill. It appears they have been poisoned, but the how and the why of the random attack is mind boggling. David also brings in rancher Clayton East and his brothers-in-law, Caleb and Brice Harper, to repair his camera system. When they realize the threat, they also stay on board at the auction house alongside Audrey and her sister, Maddy, to watch over the horses. When another attack occurs and a vial of liquid is dropped in Audrey’s bag and one of the perpetrators appears to have been wounded, the group pulls closer together.
When Maddy is attacked back at the Martinez home while Audrey is still tending to the horses, and Audrey’s office is trashed, it leads the group to wonder if it is Audrey that is the target rather than David and, if so, why? Maddy spends time healing at the East Ranch for her protection. Audrey stays watched over by former army ranger Caleb Harper. But the feelings of protection become enhanced and the two that least sought relationships become an explosive combination.
As the story unfolds, and more crimes come to light, Audrey becomes a suspect in the crimes. In an unusual plot to catch a criminal, the sheriff works with the Harper and East factions to set a trap. With Audrey as the unwitting bait, the others are there to ensure her safety.
This is a well written story with characters of depth that twists and turns to a heart racing conclusion. I did enjoy this book and I do recommend it!
This is a standalone, even though other characters appear from earlier in the series. I have book 1, but still to read, and I DID read book 2. I didn't enjoy this plot as much as the 2nd book. I think the mystery element is good, but at the end it was just ok for me. I also had a hard time connecting with the two main characters, maybe bc of the insta-lust/love. I don't know, something was just missing for me. I still look forward to reading more of Donna's work from my TBR pile.
3.5 stars
My Favorite Cowboy is more than meets the eye. This romantic suspense novel was definitely more than I originally thought. They say you can't judge a book by its cover and this book is proof. I thought I was going to read a fluffy romance but My Favorite Cowboy was better than that.
Former military, this cowboy has more than a worn pair of jeans on his side. But what a backside! 😆 Two lost souls not even knowing what they were missing. Tragedy brings them together, only to have their insecurities rip them apart.
My Favorite Cowboy by Donna Grant is the third book of the Heart of Texas series. While the books of the Heart of Texas series may look like any other contemporary cowboy romance reads they are more of a romantic suspense with plenty of action involved in each book. Each book has a different lead couple so they could be read and understood as a standalone. However, for those that have followed along from the beginning the previous books characters continue to be involved.
Being a veterinarian, Audrey Martinez, will do anything she can to help a sick animal so when she gets a call from an old friend about his horses she goes immediately to help. What Audrey finds however is very disturbing when it seems that the horses in question may have been poisoned.
With it looking like someone is deliberately harming the horses Caleb Harper is among those asked to help look for answers. Caleb always swore he would never fall in love after the way his own mother left him as a kid but when Caleb meets Audrey he can’t help but fall for her. And when it seems the danger is directed at Audrey herself Caleb vows to do whatever he can to find out who is behind it.
I have been reading this series since the beginning and have quite enjoyed each book with all of the action and romance they bring. The characters are likable, the suspense a real page turner and the settings done quite well. It’s also nice to have the previous characters still involved to see where they are in their own relationships after their own danger filled, whirlwind romantic beginnings. Great series that I would definitely recommend checking out.
I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.
Wow! This is the first book by Ms. Grant that I have read but it will not be the last. I was drawn in and hooked almost from the very beginning. There is not a slow part in it. Caleb and Audrey both have issues in their past that keep them from having a serious relationship. Can they help each other to heal? To see that love is worth taking a chance? Someone has poisoned horses and Audrey must find out what it is and save them. What will it take for her to realize she is not alone and can depend on others to help. Sooooooo... in addition to the scorching heat that is Caleb an Audrey, there is a mystery to be solved, an attack, and oh so much more.
My Favorite Cowboy by Donna Grant will appeal to all animal lovers, especially those of horses. The plot was addictive. Instantly, I was taken into the mystery of several horses becoming ill. No one knows why, how, who, or what is causing the problem. But the veterinarian, Audrey, is determined to find the answers. Her heart is made of gold. It proved difficult to not take her side or like her as a character. She made me want to dig further into the book. Then, there's this tough as hell cowboy, Caleb. He has military background and the looks to make every woman swoon. There is his steel outlook that could drive away most men from him. But he too, has a good heart. He stepped up to battle and despite his mixed feelings for Audrey, helps with the case. Sparks fly, and danger mixes to create a wild thrill ride. Overall, I enjoyed reading this romantic cowboy novel. A little suspense and heat that made an unforgettable journey. I recommend My Favorite Cowboy to all readers.
Thank you Netgalley for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This was a decent western romance with mystery and likeable characters. Aubrey is the town vet determined to find the culprit who has been poisoning horses on the ranch she services. She meets Caleb who helps her solve the mystery and they fall into a comfortable romance. He holds back from showing her his true feelings due to abandonment issues he has as a kid and she holds back due to her own misgivings. Can't say this story blew my mind but it was a light novel with an intriguing plot and plausible characters.
Time for Abby's little brother, Caleb, to find his HEA.
Caleb still has the abandonment issues which have plagued the Harper siblings since their car-wreck of a mother left them behind. Although undoubtedly they were much better off under their care of Abby, but it still hurt.
Caleb has decided on the "don't let anyone in" policy to avoiding heartbreak but with his brother so recently found Naomi, he is kind of sick of having HEA thrust in his face. But that was before he met the very lovely, animal doctor Audrey.
Audrey may specialise in equines but I'd bet good money she is soft with all animals! She donates time to horse rescue charities but she is dismayed when she realises that there is a coordinated gang abusing the horses.
Caleb and Audrey are two peas in a pod, both want love but are afraid to put themselves out there, so put their efforts into their businesses instead. But when the gang starts targeting Audrey and not just the horses, Caleb finds his very deep-grained protective gene flaring up.
Talk about walls to be climbed! It might have been quicker to blast them, cos even as they ever so slowly came down, pretty soon a new course of brick was added with all the misunderstandings these 2 could generate.
I did enjoy the epilogue which tied up all the loose ends I still had dangling in my brain.
Just give up and enjoy it for what it is- an HEA with two people - Audrey and Caleb- who have been hurt and lonely. Audrey is an equine veterinarian and Caleb is a combat vet who will help her figure out why horses have been getting sick when there's no obvious cause. There's just enough about the horses to keep those of us who love them happy but there's even more romance. Yes, some of it is a bit hokey but that was ok by me. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. It's a nice read.
3 1/2 Star Review...
I’ve been thoroughly enamoured with Donna Grant’s Cowboys, and it’s wonderful that she has chosen to give readers an insight into characters we met as children. This is the first story of Abby’s (who we met in Christmas Cowboy Hero) teenage brothers Brice and Caleb. All grown up and living life as a love em` and leave em` kind of guy, the last thing Caleb wants is a permanent woman, who will ultimately break his heart.
While I did enjoy this story, it was sometimes hard to not picture Caleb as a teenager, and I often found the representation of the bad guys lacking. Overall, it was a good read, but if you’re not planning on reading the books that came before this one, you may feel like there are gaps, as there is a lot of interaction with characters from the previous books.
My Favorite Cowboy is book three in the Heart of Texas series but can easily be read as a stand alone. Each book is about the journey of one member of the siblings to romance & if not acceptance, a way to deal with abandonment issues from their parents.
Audrey is a veterinarian & has a mystery on her hands. Horses are dying on her friend’s ranch & she can’t figure out the cause. Soon it’s spreading to other customers & the pattern starts to point back to her.
Audrey’s friend hires Caleb & the company he works for to protect Audrey & figure out what’s going on. Nobody counted on the attraction between Caleb & Audrey. Their individual issues with their parents & upbringing keep interfering with their growing relationship. Will it interfere with Caleb keeping her safe?
This book was an excellent romantic suspense that pulled me in from the beginning. I enjoyed the relationships between the characters & watching them grow & develop. Both main characters had problems in the early years & had to learn to trust & accept the other person. They had to realize that it’s nice to depend on someone else once in a while. Good story!
I really enjoyed how this was a combo between super sappy romance and mystery. I was also pleasantly surprised that the first obvious suspect that comes to mind is not the answer so it’s not something that you figure out right away.
I loved that the youngest Harper has found loved. Caleb had the most emotional baggage and abandonment issues of the three, but love conquers all! Audrey is a feisty, strong woman who takes no grief and gets business done. It’s a good thing she has her sister Maddy to keep her grounded and support her unconditionally. Circumstances put Caleb and Audrey in the same place at the same time, and BAM! Caleb has no idea what hit him. He has a strong protective streak in him, but is afraid of the love he has newly discovered possibly abandoning him. A few plot twist, and a storyline that moves along at a good pace.
Who doesn’t love Cowboys? I mean this book was everything you need and more. If your looking for something hot and sweet all in one this is it. I love that it wasn’t rushed and i still want more.
Donna Grant and cowboys??? I knew Donna Grant from the Dark King and Reapers series, so I was a bit surprised to stumble upon a cowboy story at Netgalley. But hey... if she can do wonderful stories about hot guys, why not about hot cowboys?
And indeed: we meet two hot brothers: Brice and Caleb. Along with Brice's wife, their sister Abby and their brother-in-law Clayton they manage the Easton Ranch. When the local auction house starts having trouble with sick and dying horses, they step in to help David, the owner of the auction house.
There, they meet the sisters Maddie and Audrey. Audrey is an vetinarian, specialized in treating horses and the best there is in the region. Since David and Audrey's father have been friends for years, she offers to help him (free of charge), although she is supposed to work for her two ranch employers.
But when there are attacks, fires and demolitions going on, Audrey realizes she needs the help of the Harper brothers to make sure she and the horses doesn't get hurt.
Caleb is attracted to Audrey, the strong and independent woman, who loves horses as fiercely as he does. But ever since his mother walked out on him and his brother and sister, he has guarded his heart against relationships. And even when he realizes that Audrey could be the perfect woman for him, he doesn't believe in forever. So, why try something good, when it will turn bad eventually?
Audrey has always been on her own. She doesn't need a man to depend on. But when Caleb keeps her safe, she realizes that maybe it isn't so bad to rely on someone for once in a while. However, Caleb seems to try to keep her at a distance. So, although she can recognize the mutual attraction, it can be that this is all there is to it?
When the dangers are increasing, can Audrey and Caleb figure out who is targeting the horses and why? And will they continue there seperate lives? Or will they come to realize that together they can be more? Find out more in this third book of the Heart of Texas series. Five out of five stars from me and a special thank you to Netgalley for providing the arc.
Lots of drama, suspense and intrigue plus a slow burning romance with a rocky road for both Caleb and Audrey.
Audrey is a wonderfully brave, hardworking veterinarian and Caleb is an ex-Green Beret. On the surface, they seem opposites, but both love animals, horses especially and, surprisingly, both have past familial problems that shape their current circumstances.
While the mystery and romance is 5 star (especially the strength of Audrey’s character, along with her sister, Maddy, 1 star was deducted for the very final circumstances both facing Caleb and Audrey, due to the brevity and almost “glossing over” of these events. Also, some situations arose that should have been further addressed within this story, but instead were dropped as if they never happened. (Or at least the reader never hears anymore about them). Purposely being vague to avoid spoilers.
Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for an advance reader copy in exchange for an honest review.
Cowboy s and horses can't go wrong with that combination. I haven't read any of the others in the series, but will now.
This book has on page sex and cursing including a lot of f-bombs. If those things bother you, this isn't the book for you. This is part of a larger series and while reading those would help enhance this story, it isn't required because this book totally stands alone.
Having read and loved the first two books in the Heart of Texas series, I was very much looking forward to Caleb's book, but I'm sad to say that I was totally disappointed with this story. Everything was just a little too perfect and too predictable. There was mystery and romance, but everything just fell into place in the most formulaic and trite way. As soon as the “bad guy” was introduced, I recognized that they were going to be the villain. There really wasn't any other option.
As sad as it makes me to say this, the biggest disappointment to me was Caleb. While he was as solid and strong as the previous heroes in this series were, his character just fell completely flat for me. Instead of a deep but troubled character, he came off as a shallow jerk who used women and discarded them without a care in the world. I found myself disgusted by him rather than feeling bad for him. Toward the end of the story we learned why he was so standoffish, but even that attempt at drama just fizzled out with a too-perfect and easily predicted explanation and solution. Audrey was really likable, but she wasn't anything special because there was no real development to her character. There were mentions of her past (and her sister's) and some trauma that I anticipated would have played a bigger part in this story, but they were apparently mostly just throw in items to add to the formula and word count because these two solved all of their deep emotional trauma to fall madly in love with each other in about four days. While I believe in lust at first sight, I just don't believe that these two made such major life changes based on some flirty eye contact during a time of crisis and one night of hot sex. It just makes no sense. It honestly felt as if this book was written by a totally different author than the person who wrote first two because there was none of the intrigue or burning passion that made the first two books must-reads.
Even Brice and Naomi's personal drama – which I was totally invested in - was used as a throw-away plot twist that was left totally unresolved. Why was this included if there was no further mention of it after the sad reveal? It was so frustrating.
I usually really enjoy Donna Grant's books, but this one was a rare miss for me. I do appreciate the publisher for granting me access to an early copy of this story.
I enjoyed the story of Caleb & Audrey. I like how it had romance & suspense. The characters were interesting & well developed. I love the Harper family (Caleb’s family) & Audrey’s sister Maddy. I recommend reading this book if you’re looking for an entertaining story.
"My Favorite Cowboy" by Donna Grant
I loved this story. A real page turner.. A contemporary romance-mystery-suspense story that will have you glued to your edition of this story and turning the pages. I was blessed with the opportunity to receive an ARC of this story from the publisher via NetGalley... and this story is even better than the blurb would lead you to believe. It is due to hit your favorite book source on the 26th of February 2019... I advise you to watch for its arrival. Happy Reading.
