The Heart of Texas series is based on a sister and her two younger brothers. Abby’s story is told in book one – The Christmas Cowboy Hero. Brice has his HEA in book 2, Cowboy Cross My Heart which takes place years after book one, with the brothers now men. The latest book, My Favorite Cowboy is Caleb’s story, the youngest Harper.
A good cowboy romance. There was instant attraction but both are dealing with relationship issues. I did like that the relationship was work in progress. There was a wonderful blend of mystery, suspense, and romance. I liked the storyline, the characters, and writing. I have enjoyed all three books in the series and seeing all three Harpers get their HEA.

Note: This can be read completely as a stand-alone read and you will not be lost with not having read book 1 or 2.

A big thank you to NetGalley and St. Martins Press for the ARC. I am voluntarily reviewing this book. This is part of a series but reads well as a stand alone. I liked the book, it was interesting, as I haven't read many books about large animal veternarians. Caleb, and Aubrey are a cute couple. The thing with her dad was just odd but otherwise a good read! I give it 4 stars.

My Favorite Cowboy is about Caleb Harper (third member of the Harper family) and Audrey Martinez. It had a good story/bit of intrigue to it and it kept me reading pretty much straight thru until I had finished the book. Not only do we get to spend time with the Harper family, et al, but we also get to actually feel the pull from Caleb’s other family, his army buddies. They are a trip – needling and pushing Caleb – but they are right by his side when he needs to protect Audrey. What they don’t do, however, is help him protect his heart. And his family is right there with ‘em.

Audrey is a veterinarian who is passionate about treating horses and how they are cared for. Besides her practice, she volunteers to help abused and/or rescues. In My Favorite Cowboy, someone is targeting her “patients” – SO not cool with her. She and Caleb team up to not only protect the horses, but in life as well, much to their own (personal) chagrin(s).

The relationship part of their story is hawt and the building of trust and love between them is touching and is a great read. I liked this book. As I read My Favorite Cowboy, I remembered that I had already read the first two books in this series however in book-reading time, it was long ago. I can tell you that MFC can be read as a standalone but I was happy that I could go back and re-read about the family in the first two books because they were on my shelf. The Harper family has had its struggles however they are a very strong family unit...it’s just that they each get their turn to realize it. I recommend. I received an arc from NetGalley and this is my honest review.

My Favorite Cowboy is book 3 in a series but I read it as a stand alone. While I knew that I missed the other two couples' stories, it read just fine as a stand alone.

This book is a romance but with a mystery too. I really liked the characters and felt the storyline was unique and intriguing.

The story focuses on Audrey who is an equine veterinarian. She is called to help a family friend who suddenly has some very sick horses. Something doesn't add up and this friend also calls in Caleb and his family to watch over Audrey while she stays with the horses in an effort to save them. It just keeps getting more intense with more attacks on this family friend and his business. But then it seems Audrey is who this mysterious person is after. All while tensions rise, Caleb and Audrey find each other but both are hesitant due to their histories. It is all quite the tale to get to an HEA.

Overall, I really enjoyed this novel. My only real complaint is with the jarring scene/character changes. You are reading along about something happening with certain characters and boom, the next paragraph is a totally different scene with different characters. The first time it happened, I honestly thought some of the book had to be missing....especially since the new scene was with new characters which we had no idea existed. Then it happened again and I realized that there just wasn't any transitions. It just kept happening. Hopefully they will get this fixed before release as it did detract from the book quite a lot. Otherwise, I did find this novel to be worth the read.

My Favorite Cowboy is the third book of the Heart of Texas Series however I haven’t read the first two and it read just fine. This book is a romance/suspense story about Audrey an equine veterinarian who gets caught up in a mystery of poisioned horses who belong to a dear friend. As she works around the clock to save these horses we are introduced to Caleb a former green beret turned rancher. They fight their attraction to one another while batttling their own demons and trying to solve this mystery of poisioned horses and break ins. All characters fit in perfectly with one another, the story evolves nicely with its share of suspense, laughter, loyalty and steamy scenes. Its a perfect read for a stay at home cozy night.

My Favorite Cowboy is the third book in the Heart of Texas series. It can be read as a stand alone and you won't really be missing anything.
This story is a little bit of mystery mixed with romance. The lead characters, Caleb and Audrey were interesting and enjoyable to read about. I truly enjoyed the banter between Caleb and his siblings throughout the book. It is exactly how I would act with my siblings. This book is an easy read and not really fast paced. If you are looking for an edge of your seat mystery, this is not that type of book. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a good story, with entertaining characters.

My Favorite Cowboy is book three in the Heart of Texas series by Donna Grant. In book one, we met the oldest sister, Abby Harper. Book two, her younger brother, Brice got his turn. Now it’s the youngest Harper brother, Caleb’s turn.

As did Abby and Brice, Caleb Harper has some serious abandonment issues. Their mother left them when Brice and Caleb were little, leaving an eighteen year old Abby to raise the boys. Now, years later, Abby is happily married to Clayton East and Brice is married to Naomi. But Caleb is convinced he will never risk being hurt by opening his heart. He is a one and done cowboy. Brice and Caleb own a ranch together and train horses. Their entire family is very close knit. They’ve all been through so much together.

Audrey Martinez is an equine veterinarian. She’s become well known and her services are highly sought after. She also donates her free time to horse rescues, caring for the horses. A family friend runs such a rescue and has asked Audrey to help him with some sick horses. They can’t figure out what is wrong with the affected horses and the situation is getting worse by the hour. Foul play is suspected so Caleb, Brice, and their brother in law, Clayton are called in to help. That is how Audrey and Caleb first meet.

Horses are Audrey’s life. She’s worked night and day to get to where she is so she has given little time to relationships. She’s never really felt any sort of affection to anyone she has dated. She has always dreamed of finding that deep love her parents shared. But when she and Caleb first meet, she can’t deny there is something there that keeps drawing her to him.

Caleb and Audrey can’t deny the pull they both feel to each other but both are also dealing with the walls they have both built up. At the same time, the horses are getting sicker. As Audrey works night and day to find the answer, the situation gets more dangerous as things continue to happen. They have to wonder, who is the bad guy after? Is it a vendetta against that particular rescue? Or could it be Audrey herself that is being targeted.

“Whatever mess David had pulled her into was too deep for her to wade through on her own. She needed help. No. She needed Caleb.”

“We protect what’s ours, as well as our friends. You and your sister are counted among those now.”

First, I want to mention that I love the secondary characters. Jace and Cooper that have been in the books throughout are not blood of the Harpers and Easts (Addy’s husband’s last name) but they are family. And there is also Maddy, Audrey’s little sister. She was so spunky. This book had a fair amount of suspense as they try to solve the mystery of what has been happening to the horses. It was obvious from the beginning that Audrey and Caleb belonged together. They both had so much to work through, though, before they could let each other in. And it was not an opportune time with everything else going on. But does love ever choose an opportune time to strike? Perhaps it’s more like fate stepping in? Even though these two experienced pretty fast insta-lust, it took them both awhile to let the other in. They both made a lot of mistakes along the way. But, this is a cowboy romance. So you know that everyone will get their happy ever after in the end. It had a cute little epilogue as well that was six months down the line so we get a glimpse into their future. Things felt pretty tied up in the end so I don’t know if there are more books planned in this series or not. You could easily read this as a stand alone although then you just wouldn’t know the history of Caleb’s two siblings.

Loved reading the third book in Heart of Texas series. When Audrey, a vet, is trying to figure the poison given to horses to save them, she meets a handsome cowboy, Caleb. Caleb and his family help Audrey and her sister, Maddy. Read the highly recommended, wonderfully written, and a must read love story.
I reviewed a copy of the book through NetGalley.

I’ve been hooked by Donna Grant’s Heart of Texas series. My Favorite Cowboy can be read as a stand-alone, however it’s the third in the series.

Caleb is the last to find his match, after his sister and brother, with Audrey, the veterinarian who seemed to be in trouble.

She awoke in him such protectiveness and as a man who had some commitment issues, there was something different this time with Audrey. Helping his community was one thing and he was always the kid of man who was invested and helping people in need, but when he realized what happened to her turned to be real threats, there’s no holding back.

Between Audrey and Caleb, the pull was there, a powerful bond between two people who’ve never met. When they teamed up to solve the mystery around the horses death and also the threats around Audrey, they soon realized that they shared more than friendly feelings. They had this intense connection that everyone could feel.

Caleb wasn’t the relationship kinda guy, taking one day at the time and especially leading the game, by being not left behind. He put distance on purpose but the longer he stayed with her the more he wouldn’t let her go. Crushing all his walls he build so hard.

Audrey didn’t really have time for relationship either, she was married to her job, dedicated to animals, maybe a little too kind with people, seeing the best in them. She was fierce, brave willing to find in any way how she was

Quickly, Audrey and her sister were welcoming into Caleb’s family, like they naturally belong, finding a place where people cared very much, fighting the battles together.

I enjoyed reading ‘My Favorite Cowboy’ by Donna Grant. Damn those cowboys...

Nothing exciting or new here for me to love, I liked it enough to finish, I though at one stage did not like some of the characters. I was really hoping for more, but it was the same as the last one i read.

Found the characters a bit shallow and stereotypical, didn't really connect with any of the characters or the storyline.

DNF at 16% (sorry)

Great plot and a true love story. Sigh..
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It’s funny how you can develop an opinion of a character easily as the story develops. I started off really enjoying both of the main characters in this book. I loved Caleb because he was sweet, kind, and very protective of her.
I liked Audrey because she was different, pretty simple, and a straightforward person dedicated to her work almost to a fault.
But then things changed a little bit especially towards the end. While I loved the way these two interacted together I did have some issue with the fact that neither one seemed to have a back bone when it came to standing up for their feelings for each other.
Both of them seem to tip toe around each other and were afraid to even admit that they have feelings; strong feelings; lusty feelings for each other. They both had commitment phobia and were afraid to talk to each other about their feelings. That made it difficult for the reader to have strong feelings for them.
There were some really great parts to the story. I loved the suspense and mystery of the story itself. I love the blooming of the romance and the steaming connections that the author crafted. Oh, Caleb is super sexy and I love the romance portion of the story. It is just so worth the read.
Overall, it was a very enjoyable story and I would definitely be interested in reading more from this author in the future.
Audrey is a vet who is dealing with the sudden poisoning of horses she cares for at some of the ranches she works with. Caleb owns one of those ranches and gets a kick out of this beautiful yet, fragile looking woman taking care of horses that could crush her with one wrong move.
Audrey has a problem with pushy, arrogant men, especially with her history. Problem is that Caleb doesn't seem to be willing to leave her alone and let her do her job.
When things become really dangerous and, Caleb invites is brothers in arms to group together and bring these horse killers down, Audrey may just have to change her mind about this bullheaded man. After all, anyone who could love animals as much as she does can't be all that bad!
**I voluntarily read an early copy of this title courtesy of NetGalley and the publisher**
My Favorite Cowboy is the first Donna Grant novel I have read and I can confidently say it will not be the last. I was very quickly drawn into her writing style and the characters and plot of the book had me wanting to just keep reading!
Audrey Martinez is an equine vet and one of the very best in the area. She has thrown herself completely into her work after her mother's passing and her father abandoning she and her sister, Maddy. When horses fall ill at the rescue that David, a friend of her father's for years, he reaches out to her knowing that not only will she help, but she's likely the only one that will be able to save the animals.
When it is determined that the horses have been poisoned, David calls in Caleb Harper and his family to assist with security until they figure out who is targeting the horses. Caleb is a former Green Beret who has come home to work with his family on their ranch. Like Audrey, Caleb focuses all of his attention on his work. While he enjoys women, he's not the kind that wants to be in a relationship courtesy of deeply ingrained feelings from his childhood.
When Audrey and Caleb meet, the spark between the two of them is evident almost immediately. While trying to solve the mystery of what is happening with the horses, both of them are fighting their own demons when it comes to their feelings for one another. It is clear that they are going to end up in bed together, but the bigger question is will it turn into more?
I loved how this whole story unfolded. I was kept on the edge of my seat as the mystery around the horses came to light and I was equally as invested as what was happening between Audrey and Caleb. I also loved the rest of Caleb's family and Audrey's sister. They helped make the story that much richer. I would highly recommend this awesome romance.
This is the first contemporary romance I've read of Donna Grant's. I guess I still am trying to get used to it...as I do love the dragon kings/reaper series.
In this normal world, we find Audrey and Caleb, two people who met at a time when Audrey needed some help with work (there I said it without giving away much). Both are scarred by their pasts, Caleb more so than Audrey and are both so stubborn. Wanted to knock their heads together sometimes. Anyway, the mystery deepens as things aren't what they seem. I do wish the villain showed up earlier rather than more than halfway through the book. Though it does make it harder to guess who is the bad guy here.
I guess unlike the paranormal series where the world is richer in detail and all, this felt really ordinary. Story is just ok for me. I do hope Maddy will get her story too. And Jack and Cooper.
Unlike the kings/reaper series though, I have no burning desire to read this series from the start. Sure I'm curious but it can wait. Maybe I should check her other contemporary series....
Thank you NetGalley and publisher for this copy!
This is number 3 in a series. It can be read alone. But the stories are very enjoyable it’s well worth to read all of them. This one has drama,murder mystery and a nice love story mixed in. Caleb and Audrey have big issues with trust and relationships. They help each other find out what they have been missing while fighting the bad guys. Great story.
A typical kind of romance. Lots of horses, and I don't like horses. This story was okay. The writing is good. It's just not for me.
Audrey Martinez is a veterinarian that is so devoted to her work she has no time for men and has adopted a bit of a love them and leave them attitude, maybe it's a hangover from when her father walked out on her and her little sister Maddie after their mother's death. Someone has poisoned three horses at a friend's stables and she is desperately trying to save the horses.
Caleb Harper was deeply scarred when his mother walked out on him and his brother and sister when they were still small, he was affected more than the others (or maybe just in a different way) because he actually saw her leaving and begged her to stay. Now he never lets any woman close, he knows a million ways to let a woman go. When Caleb and his brother and brother-in-law find out about the poisoning they are the first to pitch in to try to catch the poisoner, but what is the motive?
Caleb and Audrey feel an instant attraction, but can they overcome their pasts and catch the poisoner?
I'll be honest, other than Donna Grant's writing there was nothing I liked about this novel, which is a pity because I like Donna Grant's other novels. I thought Audrey was severely lacking social skills, indeed so was Caleb, she needed her sister to point out basic human responses. She put her work above everything and had no friends other than clients or potential clients. Caleb was the sort of guy who sees a relationship hurdle and instead of acting immediately by, I don't know picking up the phone, he stews for five days, blames work pressures and doesn't want to use the telephone because its too impersonal! You just slept with the woman and then ghosted her for five days FFS.
The plot kind of fizzed out, mired in the quagmire of Caleb's indecision and Audrey's lack of self-worth, then got settled bish-bash-bosh by some circumstantial evidence and (of course) a recorded confession.
Overall, I found this cliche-ridden, turgid and the villain's motivations made no sense to me. A pity because I did enjoy the first book but revisiting my review of the second book it seems like I had the same complaints about the plot taking a back-seat to sex and angst in the second book.
I received a free copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in return for an honest review.
3.5 Stars
In this third book of the Heart of Texas series, Caleb Harper gets his chance at love even though he has harbored years of hurt feelings from his childhood. Caleb is a love’em and leave’em kind of cowboy who has had a lot of encounters, but no lasting relationships. When he meets veterinarian Audrey Martinez, Caleb feels something he has never felt before for a woman. Audrey and Caleb both have abandonment issues because of bad parents so neither one think they need or even want a true committed relationship. Audrey is a highly sought after horse vet and since Caleb runs a horse ranch, the two have much in common in that way as well as their mutual attraction.
When horses under Audrey’s care fall mysteriously ill, it seems someone has some nasty intentions towards her career. Caleb and his family are determined to help protect Audrey and solve the mystery of who is so cruelly harming the innocent animals she has devoted her life to helping. Caleb resists his growing attraction to Audrey sensing that this one woman he cannot so easily walk away from if their relationship becomes more than professional. Audrey has given all to her career which she loves and yet is very lonely although she resists Caleb as much as he does her.
Readers of the earlier books know the Harper family backstories and so met Caleb as a young boy in The Christmas Cowboy Hero though this can be read as a standalone. I like this series for the most part though these characters tend to spend too much time in their heads which causes the story to drag and adds quite a bit of emotional angst.
