This was a good read. I felt like I was coming in on the middle of the story being the third of the series and the first I've read. However I didn't feel completely lost and it was a good story I plan to read the rest of the series
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC in return for an honest review.
Her Pretty Bones by Carla Kovach is book three in the Gina Harte series. I hadn't read the first two when I read this and had no issues following so I definitely believe they can be read as stand alones.
This book grabbed me and hooked me from the start! A young girl, covered in track-marks, malnourished and injured falls from the back of a van. The story from here on is gripping as you follow Detective Harte as she tries to find out who this girl is and what happened to her.
I loved this book and am looking forward to reading more from Carla Kovach! A great crime novel with lead characters that have depth to them and allow you to really 'know' them.
Definitely recommend!
Sadly I got the request that I could read this after it was already archived , so I couldn't download it to read
This is Book 3 in the Detective Gina Harte series. I have read this series from the beginning and they just keep getting better. I loved this book, a great crime thriller with plenty of twists and turns. This book is a must read for fans of crime thrillers and I would recommend reading in order to help get a feel for the characters.
Thankyou to NetGalley, Bookouture and the author, Carla Kovach, for the opportunity to read a digital copy of Her Pretty Bones in exchange for an honest and unbiased opinion.
Such a good read. I was hooked from the start.
The storyline was well thought out and written with well developed characters.
Thanks so much to the publisher for ARC to read and offer my opinion. I just love DCI murder mysteries, I guess because I’m such a fan of Sherlock Holmes. This was an all encompassing book with so many characters I had to write them all down just to keep straight. Third book in a series but it did well as a standalone.
Gina Harte is the detective in charge, as her last case has put quite a strain on her mentally and physically. In this one she investigates a young girl that fell out of the back of a van. With no I idea of where the girl came from or who she was. The detectives have to start with what little they know and work backwards to solve this crime. It’s an amazing feat how the author brings it all together.
What did I like? Well, you have me at DCI. I’ve been a fan of this author since the first Gina Harte book, and this one was just as thrilling. The massive amount of work going into this book had to be phenomenal but so worth it as I finished.
Would I recommend or buy? Love a good mystery? Look no further. This was a very harrowing ordeal for all the characters as Gina herself suffers from problems with her own daughter. Everything comes to the front and no secrets will be hidden. An excellent murder mystery novel.
Thoughts for the author? Congratulations on a really great series. Harrowing tale but an excellent read! Thanks so much for a copy!
Her Pretty Bones is the 3rd in the series and I really feel that Kovach just gets better and better as she goes on. A mother's worst nightmare must be when their child goes missing. It muct get even more horrific when people believe she just ran away. Her Pretty Bones is fascinatingly current. I found it very dark and at times was in tears .. biut I don't want to give too much away. Suffice it to say that this is another cracking read, with multiple strands and many heartbreaking moments.
Extremely twisty and really well written.
Third in the series Gina once again drew me in.to a dark story.A well written thriller full of twists and turns,Picked up to read a few pages and could not put down.Looking forward to next in series.#netgalley#bookouture
I'm a big fan of Carla Kovach's Gina Harte series. These crime thrillers are fast paced, twisty but also so well written. Gina is a very likeable character that's easy to root for - definitely one of my favourite fictional detectives.
I would like to thank Bookouture Publishing and the Netgalley website for this partnership.
I had loved the two previous books, the one that was even more hooked on the story, so captivating, full of suspense and twists and turns with endearing characters.
The story begins when a young girl falls from a fast moving van. Shortly afterwards another girl was found dead in a shallow grave. Similarities with the other girl are surprising: age, identical hair color and a frail body.
Fearing that a serial killer would immerse himself in the city, Gina Harte will investigate before another girl is murdered.
A dark and complicated case for Gina who is a very damaged character. A dark storyline of sadness and desperation
Fab read. Could not put down. Highly recommended to all. Believable characters. Great author. Will be watching out for more titles.
Loved it! Heart racing and really well written with great characters - I love Gina her character is strong and yet vulnerable and she understands more than most what victims can go through
Another brilliant book from Carla Kovach! I couldn't put it down (as usual!) and raced through it in just a couple of evenings. I didn't guess who the perpetrator was until it was revealed and I really felt for the girls ... I so badly wanted them to have a happy ending! Gina is a great character as always and I enjoyed the snippets of her home life alongside the case. Can't wait for the next one in the series!
Thoroughly enjoyable police procedural, written with authority. A great story, gripping from the very first page, making you want to read this with interruption!
A young girl falls from the back of a van emaciated, dehydrated and clearly an addict it is left to DI Gina Harte and her team to discover her identity, when a 2nd young girl is found a link begins to emerge and this needs to be solved before a 3rd girl is found dead
This book catches your attention from the very beginning and holds it all the way through. I really enjoyed it.
This is quite a hard hitting book, dealing with teenage runaways, homelessness and drugs. Gina Harte’s team investigate after a young woman is thrown or jumps from the back of a van. She is in a terrible state and dies before she can reveal what has happened to her. In her last moment of consciousness she says ‘help her’ and the police are hunting for the person who needs rescuing.
The pain of a mother searching for her runaway daughter is quite harrowing especially as we, the reader, suspect we know what has happened to the girl. Another girl is concerned about a strange visitor where she works: is there a connection? Meanwhile we see the viewpoint of a young woman enslaved to drugs, kept locked up whilst caring for an elderly lady.
Police detective Gina Harte has her own issues to deal with. Her career has frequently got in the way of her relationship with her daughter Hannah who resents it even more now that she is a mother and wants her own mum to be there for the family. Yet Gina cannot help but be dedicated to her work and bringing the case to a close.
This is the third book to feature Gina Harte and the first one that I have read. It works perfectly well as a stand alone novel but I would like to read the prequels to learn more about Gina’s relationship with her daughter, and future books to see how it and her career develops.
Her Pretty Bones by Carla Kovach is the third in the Detective Gina Harte series.
First, let me thank NetGalley, the publisher Bookouture, and of course the author, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
My Synopsis: (No major reveals, but if concerned, skip to My Opinions)
A girl is found barely alive after being thrown or jumping out of the back of a van. She is mal-nourished, her body covered in needle marks, a gash across her abdomen, and her fingerprints burned off. Her last words before slipping into unconsciousness were “help her”. The team’s hopes of identifying her are slim, and finding out who she was talking about, slimmer. But Gina is determined.
A few days later, the body of another young girl is found in a shallow grave. Similarities between the girls are hard to ignore, including their ages, their thinness, and their red hair.
On a personal level, Gina is still healing from the attempt on her life in her last case. It has brought up the feelings of guilt that have long been buried over the death of her husband. Her emotions run in every direction. Even though Gina insisted that their affair end, she is surprised to feel jealousy when her boss seems to be flirting with Annie. Another fight with Hannah is not helping the mother-daughter bond that Gina is hoping for. She will have to put everything aside if she wants to solve this case.
My Opinions:
One of the themes in this book centered around how teenagers can so easily be taken advantage of, how and why some run away, and how easily they are duped into doing drugs and other things for food or money. How trusting they are. The book also showed the effects their absence has on their families, some more than others. This was just sad.
The other subject entwined, although sometimes subtly, in the story is love. The love of a husband who will do absolutely anything to find a caregiver for his wife, the love of a caregiver for her patient, and the love of two mothers, one biological, and one a foster mother for their daughters. This subject alternated between devastatingly sad and overwhelmingly heartbreaking.
While the author handled both topics with grace, it was sometimes hard to see the forest for the trees. There were so many stories and individuals, that confusion occasionally surfaced. I usually like multiple points of view, but there seemed to be too many, and although they all came together at the end, you really had to pay attention to this complex plot. As well, it sort of slowed down mid-point, and took a while to pick back up, although it definitely did. I loved the ending.
Bottom line, I am looking forward to the next book!
Thanks to netgalley for the opportunity to have read this entertaining read.
This is already the 3rd book in the Gina Harte series, and unfortunately I haven't read the previous books. It does read nicely as a standalone, but perhaps I missed some small reference to the previous books?
A young woman falls out of the back of a van, seriously injured, and her only words are "help her".
Who is her? Who must they help.
Detective Gina Harte is put on the case, and she has to try her best to solve the injured girl's case, as well as the "her".
This was a great read, and I will recommend it strongly.
