*Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.* 'Her Pretty Bones' is the third book in the Detective Gina Harte series. I have read the previous two books and was keen to read more. The book focusses on the investigation into a young girl who is found in a terrible state after being pushed from a moving van. A few days later, the body of another young girl turns up nearby. Are these two cases related? It is up to Harte and her team to investigate and find out the truth. Could there be other young lives at risk? As with the previous two novels in the series, readers are given a glimpse into the lives of the police officers investigating the crimes, particularly Detective Gina Harte, whose home life and history is anything but straightforward. An interesting and engaging read. I look forward to the next book in the series.
This is book 3 in the DI Gina Harte series and I will definitely be going back to read the first 2. There are a few spoilers from the previous books in this one and I feel like I'll understand the characters more when I read the other 2. However, it can definitely be read as a stand-alone without feeling lost or left behind.
Her Pretty Bones is consistently paced and kept me thoroughly engaged. It’s told from multiple POVs but it’s easy to keep straight and it added to the story and the emotions felt. It is definitely an emotional read at times covering topics from homelessness, caregiving and slavery.
I didn’t guess who it was and I was sucked in until the very last page. I really enjoyed Gina Harte's character and I can’t wait to go back and get to know her better.
From my blog: Always With a Book:
This is the third book in the Detective Gina Harte series and I think this series just keeps getting better! It's so addicting and compelling...I just love when I find these crime fiction/police procedural series with a strong female lead.
While this third book can definitely be read as a stand-alone - something that I am finding most books in series can be done these days - I will say that I highly recommend reading the previous books first. There is quite a lot of backstory on the characters that I think is helpful in really understanding the characters more fully. Plus, this book in particular does reference quite a few times events that happened in the previous book, events that if you were to read it after the fact, would in fact be considered spoilers.
Once again, I love that Detective Gina is pulled into a case and you see that she is putting all of herself into solving it. But, and this is a huge but, this time, there are a few mitigating factors standing in the way. First, she might have come back to work a little too soon after the last case...I won't say too much due to spoilers, but just know that this causes a bit of a rift between her and her daughter. Her daughter seems to think that Gina always puts work first, and this time she might just be correct! I really like that we see this family feud play out and that we see Gina struggle with her new-found anxiety throughout this case. It's real and it's definitely not without warrant.
This latest installment is told from multiple points of view and the three threads that keep the story moving are woven together to form quite an unforgettable story. The twists and turns really keep you guessing not only as to what is going on and who is involved, but also it keeps the suspense ramped up.
I hope there is another Detective Gina Harte book out soon. I really like this series and cannot wait to see what is in store for Gina and her team next!
Enthralling very sad. As usual no idea who’s behind it all. Loved it and couldn’t put it down. Love the Harte series of books keep them coming please
I received an ARC of this from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
I knew this was a series when I requested it and I haven't read any of the previous books, but this book worked really well as a standalone. Granted, there were some tidbits from Gina's past that I wasn't totally privy to, but enough detail was given to figure out what happened.
This thriller/mystery novel was dark, gritty, interesting, and completely kept my interest until the very end. There were so many players and so many possibilities to consider that I wasn't able to figure it out until it was explained to me.
This book touches on addiction, the homeless and life on the streets, particularly for teens, violence, murder, abusive families, jealousy, and slavery. It keeps a good pace though sometimes the characters get a bit jumbled, but otherwise, great ending that tied everything together nicely.
I would recommend it either as a standalone or if you're reading it as a series. I plan on picking up the others in the series as well.
With thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for the book in exchange for an honest review.
Whilst this was a fascinating insight to police procedures and the monotony and boredom that sets in going over ctv coverage and the everyday paperwork of policing. It was also insightful, into how determined police officers can be trying to trace missing persons.
The storyline was very clever and the ending was very sad,in relation to the wasted death of two young women. It was also very long winded and could have been edited better.
Recommended.
Her Pretty Bones is the third in the Gina Harte series and I might recommend that you read the first two. That being said this is a fantastic book and it is engrossing series. Fabulous writer.
I really liked this book, although I wish I would have read the first two prior to this. Still a great suspense/mystery that did not disappoint!
This book is part of a series you will have to read 1,2. Its a good book but I wish I had read the others first. Its a book about runaways.
A good police procedural story that has a different flavor than many of the detective books that I am used to reading.
The prologue immediately captures your interest and the first chapter starts out with a bang. A young emaciated, bruised and bleeding girl falls out or is pushed out of a van and the driver never stops. The lead detective Gina Harte and her team are called in to identify the girl and work the case. A body is found nearby where the girl fell out of the van also with no identification and the police feel the two crimes may be related to each other and have a huge puzzle on their hands with no leads. This is only the beginning of so many problems and headaches for Detective Harte.
The first part of the book I found very exciting and then it started to slow down. I liked most of the characters although Gina's personal feelings popped up while she was at work and I didn't think she was a strong lead detective since she got distracted very easily and I didn't feel that she gave her team the credit that they really deserved while working just as hard as she was and they were not complaining.
I didn't know this was book three in the series and maybe the other two books would have helped me to understand Gina's personality better. Several references are made to a previous attack on the detective several months earlier and I wanted to know more about her and her team.
I want to thank Bookouture and Netgally for the opportunity to read this book!
I have read all the previous books in this series and this one did not disappoint. An Excellent thriller with plenty of dark twists within the storyline and turns to keep the reader hooked. Highly recommended.
Many thanks to Netgalley and Carla Kovach for the advanced copy of this book, I agreed to give my unbiased opinion voluntarily.
The third book in the Detective Gina Harte series. An excellent read which is what we can expect from Carla Kovach!
A young girl falls from the back of a moving van. She's seriously malnourished and barely conscious! What was she doing in the van and how did she get in the van in the first place. Shortly after another girls body is found in a shallow grave. Are the two cases connected?
In steps Detective Gina Harte. She races to solve the mystery while also dealing with her own personal issues following her last case!
Bring on the next one!
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for allowing me to read this arc.
HER PRETTY BONES is the third crime thriller novel in the Detective Gina Harte Series, by author Carla Kovach. Having enjoyed the first two books in the series, I move on to book 3. The story is set in Worcestershire England.
The 3 books in the series include:
The Next Girl (Book 1)
Her Final Hour (Book 2)
Her Pretty Bones (Book 3)
Even though this novel worked well as a stand-alone, I would recommend other readers to read the previous books as they will be given background information on the characters in this book. A solid police procedural with engaging characters.
A young woman falls from a van speeding down a quiet road. Battered and bruised, she turns her head to the person who comes to her aid. ‘Help her’, she whispers before her eyes close.
Then days later, the body of another young girl is found in a shallow grave just a few miles away. The similarities between the two girls are startling – same age, same frail body, same shocking red hair.
The town suspects there is a serial killer on the loose. Detective Gina Harte must catch the killer before he finds another perfect girl.
This crime thriller is told from multiple viewpoints, through Gina's investigation, but also those involved with the crime. A dark twisty mystery with strong female detectives.
Many thanks to Bookouture via Net Galley for my digital copy.
This is the third in the DI Gina Harte series of books but can easily be read as a stand-alone (I know as I haven’t yet read the previous two....yet!)
It starts when a young girl’s body falls from the back of a van, she is rushed to the hospital and her last words are help her.
A few days later a young girl’s body is found in a shallow grave... the two girls are of a similar age and both had red hair......as ever Gina is determined to find out what happened to these girls..
I enjoyed the way the book was told from various points of view and it really helped ramp up the tension.....it’s full of twists and turns and will have your heart racing....a real thriller of a police procedural...dark and menacing.
I would like to thank the Author/the Publishers/NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book for free in exchange for a fair and honest review
Detective Gina Harte is a great character, and I really enjoyed being back in her world. While dealing with plenty in her private life, in this book, she comes up against a killer after one young girl falls out of the back of a van, and another is found in a shallow grave.
Harte has to unravel the clues and figure out what is going on. There are twists and turns in this one that keep the suspense level high. I was drawn in immediately and kept riveted throughout the book. Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for providing a copy of this book in return for an honest review.
I will admit this one was too much childhood trauma for me at the moment and I was a bit lost having not read the previous material. The writing is strong and I can see that the story will play out well, but this one will be hard for those suffering childhood abuse.
I received this copy from NetGallery and after reading the last two books in the series I couldn’t wait to read this one!
The story starts with a young lad travelling to his first day of work when a girl falls out of the back of a van and he has to do an emergency stop to not hit her. But when the police arrive not everything as it seems the young girl has needle marks, emaciated and has a large wound on her belly. But before she passes out she said "help her".
Gina has to solve the case and work out who the young girl was and if anyone else is in danger from what she has said. Around half way through another younger girl has been found dead! Are they connected together? The police don’t have many leads but can they tie everything together?
After reading the full story I didn’t expect the end result and the story behind why they did it. It was a great ending to the story and Gina Harte our all the puzzle pieces together to find the missing girl!
I would totally recommend this series as the character was so likeable. But the one thing that annoyed me was Gina and her past bringing it up all the time and having panic attacks about what happened. As I wanted her to be with Briggs as he was the first person she told and could help her through the pain and troubles she was having!
I think that Carla Kovach is a very talented author, so I was excited to get approved for book #3; Her Pretty Bones!
Once I started reading, I couldn't put it down and finished this in one day. Her Pretty Bones moved quite nicely and definitely made my pulse pound a few times. The twist was a bit of a surprise as well. All in all, this was a great thriller!
While driving to work one morning, a man is surprised by a woman jumping out of a van in front of him. He slams on his brakes and goes to help her. He finds her in terrible shape and she whispers to him; "help her". The girl's body is covered in needle markings, she has been beaten and is severely malnourished.
Detective Gina Harte is leading this case when another body is found, only this one is well dressed and looks cared for. Are these two girls connected and, if so, how? Is this the work of a serial killer? Once the clues come pouring in and everything begins piecing together, the full depravity of the situation is revealed.
Thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for this ARC.
How is it, in a matter of days, two women are found under very similar circumstances. The first is found running from a speeding van and is almost hit. She says to the driver that comes to her aid, "Help her." Then, the other woman's body is found in a shallow grave. There are striking similarities and Detective Gina Harte must take the case, ignoring serious issues in her personal life.
Why were these two girls targeted? Is another girl in danger? And danger is the name of the game. This is especially so as we get varying points of view entailing how the girls were connected, the things done to them, and whether or not Gina would be able to get to the bottom of it.
Her Pretty Bones is the third in the Detective Gina Harte series, and as I have not had the opportunity to read the previous books, there were a few characters that have key roles that I was not familiar with. Even so, I found this book easy to follow because attention was riveted on the action in this story.
The varying timelines between the then and now help a lot in working things out, but there are twists and turns along the way to keep the reader's attention. This was an exceptional mystery and drew me in from the outset. I look forward to continuing to follow this series.
Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC to review in exchange for my honest opinion.
Detective Gina Harte is fast becoming one of my favourite female protagonists. This book has me hooked from page one with lots of twists & turns all the way through. An excellent read
