I received a free ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This has some interesting survival facts. A good learning tool for kids. I wasn't a fan of the pictures, but the other information was good.
This book definitely had Robinson Crusoe vibes to it. With hints and tips for any young adventurer who finds themselves stranded on a desert island this is a must read for anyone with an interest in such adventures. Littered with facts about famous castaways and hints and tips in addition to the guides given, this book prepares the reader with how to build a shelter, how to forage for food, signal for help and some basic first aid tips.
This book would be a great gift for any scout or young adventurer.
Many thanks to the publishers for granting me access to an eGalley of this book via NetGalley
My son (7) has read this a few times now and decided to share it with his cubscout den! the 10 2nd graders in our den had fun talking about how the book is similar to what they learn and if certain things would work or if they could try other things! It has lots of ideas And detailed pretty well for a kids book. I do think kids would still need adult help for sure to try these techniques but it gives them a sense of control knowing they can use what they learned in the book to survive. My son likes to watch bear grylls with us and this book reminded him of bear grylls!
This book was a fun look at what you would need to do if you ever became Tom Hanks in Castaways. Scientifically everything is accurate. The illustrations are colorful and interesting. What annoys me is that once to multiple times per page the reader is told to ask for an adults help. I’m sorry what if this was a Lord of the Flies situation and there was no parents. I’m sure the Boy Scouts handbook does not tell you to get your parents help for everything.
This is a well written storybook with tons of useful tips on survival tips if you are ever trapped on a deserted island. Tips from finding water, building a fire and a shelter to recognizing eatable plants. Love the illustrations and the easy to understand structure of the book. A definite buy for my kids.
Thank you Netgalley for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
How to Survive on a Desert Island is one cool children’s book with tons of useful information! Useful that is, if you are ever faced with survival issues! I could see my 11 year old son finding this book pretty interesting. He loves to play survival video games and watch Survivor so I can see how this topic might pique his interest!
The book starts off by asking what are your first three priorities, when you find yourself stranded. The answer is finding water, building a fire and making a shelter. Then it goes into basic detail on how to trap food, understanding the night sky, making a distress signal and first aid basics.
I wasn’t super impressed with the illustrations but I think the all the information more than makes up for it and would keep my son’s interest.
Thank you to Schiffer Publishing and NetGalley for this wonderful advanced copy in exchange for my honest review. My opinions are my own.

If you have children that love the outdoors or if you have a scout/4h, How to Survive on a Desert Island is the perfect book for them.
How to Survive is filled with many practical survival tips that can prove to be very useful should you ever find your in a precarious situation. The chapter on fire building was quite exciting, yes, the kids and I tried it and it worked. I highly recommend talking with your children and attempting this together, first.
Our favorite chapter was How to Catch Fish and Make Traps, it's described as the most complicated task in the book. If you have a family that's really into hunting and fishing, it might not be as difficult, but for those of us that are novices in this category, this section is a lifesaver (no pun intended).
Very informative book even if you are not a castaway on a desert island. This would make a great gift to a scout, 4H, or any child who likes to be outdoors. One should always know how to tell directions without a compass, make a fire, find food, and construct a shelter - you never know when an emergency may happen. The illustrations were great and kept an upbeat attitude throughout the book, and that is something the book didn't cover (staying positive in unfamiliar situations).
Thank you NetGalley and Schiffer Publishing for the opportunity to read an advance reader copy of this great book.
