Really enjoyed this book. Great plot and engaging, believe characters. I was drawn right into the story. Would definitely recommend.

A book with stories and recipes that go along with each, like a history behind the recipe. this just adds to all of the stories in the book a great read.

This is such a pleasant surprise the stories behind the cooks and their recipes brought the recipe to life and made it more memorable.

Not what I had expected. Pie Lady is a mix of recipes and stories of real people in the Mennonite community. It is written very informally and more of like a diary of sorts with recipes mixed in to the author’s memories. I find the recipes endearing and the stories give a neat insight to the people who are passing the recipes along.

Maybe I wanted more of a cookbook style book with pictures of the actual dishes and the stories to follow after. Not a bad book.

A warm wholesome book that makes you feel good inside. The author explains what Pie Lady moments are and you will find yourself searching for your own PL moments. Each chapter highlights a different pie lady with lessons learned from each of them. This is the book you will buy for your best pals and share laughter and tales of delight talking about the Pie Lady. Enjoy.

Greta Isaac did a fantastic job compiling these stories and recipes. It offers a cultural glimpse into this world that all too often is defined by terrible reality tv and other misconceptions by the media. I look forward to trying these recipes! The stories themselves are very well written and are simpy uplifting.

I purchased a physical copy of this book because I want these recipes to be close at hand at all times.

I love to cook and I once had an old cookbook that had been found in the back of an antique store. This reminded me so much of that beloved book. One of the great things about this is that it is filled with stories along with the recipes.

I loved the stories although there were some that didn’t seem to fit the recipe. All in all this is a wonderful book and gave me plenty of recipes to add to my repertoire. Recipes that I know I will be making for my family. Just an FYI, this book is not all about pie. I thought that as well but ended up with something better.

This is a sweet Christian book telling the stories of various women the author knew, weaving in some of their recipes along with the stories of these "good Christian women." The recipes are rather simple old fashioned ones, along the lines of things you would have found in the newspaper in the 1970's or a church cookbook from those days, often with instructions like "frost the cookies with your favorite chocolate frosting" or things like that. The women profiled were strong older women with tough lives, who represent the author's ideals for traditional Mennonite women. The book is written very informally, like something your grandmother would email you about women she knew. The recipes are quite simple and traditional, using ingredients like "good quality lard." The stories make up the bulk of the book though, and this is not really a cookbook.

I love cookbooks, so the fact that this one has stories and recipes all together is a plus. can't wait to try the recipes because they sound so good. The stories are lovely. Having visited PA many years ago I love the culture of Mennonites and this a wonderful way to share it.

This book is like a warm hug from friends and family and those who have passed on. The bible verses make the stories which are great, more memorable. I tried Winter's Best Gingersnaps, Russian Pancakes, Helens Buns, Perfect Cinnamon Bread. I am working my way through the rest of the book. I loved each recipe I tried. Thank you, Greta, for sharing your stories, recipes, and faith.

This book needs to decide what it wants to be! A recipe book? Short stories? Memoir? Anything?

The Pie Lady claims to be a book telling tales about various Mennonite and similar religions, all based in cooking. I was excited, because I'm very interested in how Mennonite families relate to each other. I also looked forward to looking through the recipes at the end of the chapters. This wasn't that kind of book.

It's just a series of short one or two page stories that are bland and lack any detail at all to draw you in. Just generic writing about the good old days. Then a recipe, which often had nothing to do with the story just told.

Since I quickly realized that this must be more of a cookbook since there wasn't any substance to the writing, but the recipes weren't great either. The poutine recipe? Take a bag of frozen French fries, a bag of cheese and a packet of instant gravy mix and warm it all up. ??? That isn't a recipe, especially not for a good homemade meal to gather the family for. It's just heating up instant food.

Super disappointment.

I love a good pie, but throw in some history and you’ve got me hooked. The narrative keeps you flipping pages; the prose is lovely. I genuinely enjoyed reading this book.

Absolutely gorgeous book! I loved the stories paired with recipes and the pictures were gorgeous. This is the perfect gift for the baker in your life.

This felt more like a biography than a cookbook. I’ve read novels where the author includes a recipe at the end of the chapter or mixed into the story, and that’s how this was laid out. As a cookbook, there isn’t enough to it.

What a nice find. This was the first book I've read from this author and I really enjoyed it. The stories that were shared were well written and kept my attention.

I loved everything about this book!
I come from a family of pie-makers, on both sides. My father was known for his excellent crusts and my great aunt on my mother's side, (who were reformed Mennonites) was known for her all around great pies. And I actually won 1st prize in my town's apple pie baking contest one year.
This wonderful book was so pleasant and uplifting to read - along with each recipe came a little bit about the person who made each pie.
I pre-ordered my own paperback copy from Amazon so I can try all of the recipes!

The Pie Lady compiled by Greta Isaac is more than a collection of recipes. It's a look into the lives of those behind the recipes. There is inspiration through joys and hardships, but the main theme is love shared through food. Beginner and experienced cooks will devour this book. When reading it you feel like you're sitting among many women reminiscing about their lives. It is the front porch, waving at your neighbor, kind of reading. I hope to see more cookbooks like this one, but for now I'm off to make one of the pies with my grandchildren. That in itself is a story about to happen.
