Another good tale in the Reaper's series.
Ebook from Netgalley and publishers with thanks. Opinions are entirely my own.
Normally I love paranormal but this reaper/death book just didn’t draw me in. Unfortunately I couldn’t finish because it was slightly slow and confusing for me.
I couldn't beat myself up more than I already have for not delving straight into this book as soon as I received the eARC, but you know what happens when you love books, you're always bombarded by new titles and fancy covers.
This book is still proof that Donna Grant is a master weaver. She weaves such a powerful and intriguing story that keeps you on the edge of your seat, merging the worlds of the Dark and Light Fae, the Reapers ( her own league of assassins she created) and also manages to tie in the connection to the Dark Kings. I loved the pace and the battles (Erith is such a badass!) and we need more heroines like her.
Thank you Netgalley for the eARC, I'm glad I stayed up late into the night to devour this treat!
I have said it may times and I will say it again, Ms. Grant is an absolute storyteller and I love her writing style. She never fails to engage me and I love this series! In the latest Reaper novel we finally find out who Erith really is and the final outcome of how things came to be. I must admit that I have jumped around a bit with this series, but Ms, Grant was able to ties things in nicely that I did not feel lost. I also read the Dark Kings series and there were references that tie into that story as well. Cael and Erith are the couple in this one and Cael is a warrior that Erith has been watching for a very long time. Eventually her fondness for him grows over time and he proves a worthy warrior for her. I loved Erith most of all. This was a great story, filled with action and awesomeness. 5 Reaper-Riveting stars!!!
****I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book provided by NetGalley*****
Lots of action in this one, some questions answered but more questions added to the growing pile, some things are resolved while others are slowly coming to light.

I received an ARC of this from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
This was the first novel in this series that I've read and wow, it seems I picked the best one! Without reading the previous 6, I was still able to pick up the story line and really enjoy the novel. I think it also helped that I've read some of the Dragon king novels and everything seems to interconnect.
This is the final showdown between Bran and Erith, and the build up and battle scenes are awesome. Full of strategy, manipulation, heart break, and sacrifice, you definitely need to read this if you've read the previous books in the series. There's also some steamy love scenes as one would come to expect from Grant.
I enjoyed how all the story lines from all of the different series seem to intertwine and start to come together in this novel. I love the characters, I love the battle scenes, and that ending....fantastic. I need to know what happens next!
I have been anxiously waiting for this book between Cael and Death aka Erith because their explosive interactions with each other on the pages in previous Reapers books to this series. After each book I read I kept thinking I hope these two get a happy ending.
This book fully explains who Erith is and how she came to be. The reader will get a clear picture of why she lives her life as she does and what the purpose for the Reapers is. This is thrilling for me because I wondered about her previous life every time she appeared in a book. For me a strong female main character is always a pleasure to read but I also love when they are sensitive without appearing weak.
Cael has been my favorite of the Reapers. As their leader he instantly drew my attention. What was intriguing with him was how he dealt with his feelings for Erith. I know this is a book and fantasy but his abstaining centuries because of his love for Erith sure warms a girl’s heart and makes her believe fantasies can come true.
Our villain Bran is still very dominant in this book as he keeps getting more and more powerful while Erith keeps getting weaker.
This book is also a learning lesson on not waiting so long to tell someone how you feel because someday they may be gone and you will have everlasting regret.
This is a 5 STAR read.
The latest Reaper story tells the story of a very powerful Reaper, Cael, and Erith, known also as Death. It is time for the Reapers to unite to fight against Bran, who has been gradually draining Death's powers, but it will be a very difficult and dangerous time. Who will be the victor?
Thanks to the publisher and to NetGalley for an ARC; all opinions are my own.
An excellent paranormal romance that delivers everything the series has been promising. Brilliant characterization, an amazing plot and non-stop action. How could one not love this book?! If you enjoy paranormal romances, I would definitely mark this one as a must-read!
I throughly loved reading the seventh book in the Reaper series. Erith, Death, Mistress of War, feels her powers being taken away by her ex-reaper and enemy, Bran. Cael, leader of the Reapers, wants to end Bran's life and save the woman he loves, Erith. All of the Reapers must stand together and try to battle Bran and all of the Dark Fae he has taken over. Read the highly recommended, wonderfully written full of action, romance, and action, and a must read love story.
I reviewed a book I received through NetGalley.
I voluntarily read an advanced review copy of this book
I have been waiting forever for this book and it was well worth the wait! Cael and Erith have been dancing around each others emotions in every Reaper novel and when they stop ignoring their feelings it makes for one great read. Overall this book was amazing, I laughed, cried and enjoyed every second of their journey.
Wowzers!! This was by far my favourite Reapers book, so far. I was very excited for Death's book and was not disappointed at all! I knew Erith and Ceal had chemistry, but this book blew their attractions out of the water. So many events took place within Dark Alpha's Awakening and I cannot wait to see what the future holds for the rest of the Reapers and their journey with the Dragon Kings. Thank you Ms Grant for another fantastic book!
I am a big fan of this series, but I was extremely disappointed in this book. 267 pages and about 10 of them dedicated to the final showdown. Cael and Death have been flirting forever, so their angst and hesitation to get together was annoying. There has been enough of that in the other books. It didn’t need to take up half of this one. Bran stealing the magic in such a simple way was a good idea. It makes sense that Death and her crew would miss something that would seem insignificant. However, it was so simple it was easily ended and then Bran was quickly defeated. There was no big showdown, no fear he could win. Even his dying words were lame. It’s a shame that such a major conflict and the exit of a main villain could be skipped over. Nothing happened here that couldn’t be quickly recapped in the next installment of this series. I will continue on with this series, with the hope that the next story has much more action.
So this book is about Cael and Erith. Cael is a reaper and serving Death and working with the other reapers has been his life for centuries. He always put his duty above everything else and even put aside his feelings for Death herself. Death is Erith. Interesting, right? So Erith is now fading and in need of help and Cael is willing to give his life for her. They have to defeat their enemy, Bran.
First of all, I must admit, I don't think I'm the right person to review this book, so if you're really interested to read this one, after reading my review, kindly read someone else's review. Preferably someone who's a fan of the series. Yes, this is 7th in the series. When I requested this on Netgalley, it was stated it's 7th in a series. Yes, this is a full-length novel and can be read as a standalone. I understood it just fine even though I didn't read the previous books. BUT, I know I would've enjoyed the story more if I read the others. Let me explain...
Sure this is a love story of Erith and Cael but the book started with Cael and Erith already in love. I'm assuming they fell in love in previous books, I didn't see the romance grew or developed. It's already there. And I would've preferred if their greatest antagonist is the fact that Reaper and Death can't be romantically involved. That conflict is present but it's shadowed by that great battle against Bran. I would've enjoyed seeing Erith and Cael in the same room, just talking but wanting to tear each other's clothes but can't.
But no, I often see them planning for the battle and having too many internal monologues of how they feel and what they want to do. As I said, the conflict of Death and Reaper being together is shadowed by that battle. Don't get me wrong, I love the battle, I think it's really well done, and I think this battle has been brewing since the previous books.
The ending is too clean for me. The battle's ending was gore and it was awesome but I'm talking about Erith and Cael. It's too convenient that something happened just so Erith and Cael can be together. This is not a spoiler because I'm sure you're already expecting a happy ending for the couple
Overall, this is a fine read, and like I said, I may not be the right person to review this. But hope my review helps. :)
Death's fight is just beginning, but it could also be the end. Their enemy has weakened her nearly beyond her limits and as hard as Death fights for her life, she's also fighting for her Reapers. One in particular. From the moment she saw him on the battlefield long ago, he has been the model of the Reapers, the one being that makes her feel weak and yet gives her the strength to continue on. Death is choosing to be blind to the feelings that Reaper harbors for her because the past that claimed her makes her unworthy of his feelings. Cael would never give up that easily though. For centuries he has watched Death, watched over her, and carried out all her orders with unfailing loyalty. Satisfied with keeping his love for her in his heart, never to be expressed, he serves. Until their enemy threatens her very existence. Nothing will stop him from keeping her from disappearing, not even death.
All the glimpses into their pasts up to this point has been to enhance our understanding of why the two MC's belong together. The ones written here are no different, but they give even more this time around. It gives us a clear image of Death, who she is, why she is, why she chose Reapers, and just how devoted she is to one specific male, though she'd never admit it. It was slightly different from before because it wasn't just about the sense of betrayal and resentment that plagued Cael, it was that he clearly saw Death for all she is before he knew her and it only enhanced his loyalty and devotion. It was such a pure love from both of them and their story was well-worth the wait. We've been given small tastes of their perspectives until now and finally we get the full picture and the depth and facets to these two characters were fantastic.
The reckoning we've been building up to was intense and quite painful. It was also much simpler than I anticipated. I think I was trying to find a multi-race war that would be epic. The scale was smaller but no less important or action-packed. Along with the incredible surprises regarding Cael, I was at the edge of my seat for most of my reading. Including the small yet incredibly important crossovers to the Dark Kings series was a great way to get me really angry and excited enough to go back and re-read those books as well. Weaving not just one story, but a full series and all its accompaniments is a talent that Donna Grant seems to have mastered. I'm crazy about this series as a whole because the way it all came together worked and most often kept the focus where it was needed.
I will say, though, that there were a few questions that I felt were left a bit open-ended and while I enjoyed all the action that was included, it was slightly anti-climactic. Death's confrontation with Bran was softer, more tender, and far more vulnerable than I expected. It was a good and sad moment that encompassed all of who Death is now rather than the being Bran was trying to invoke and become. It felt right. And with the last chapter as a glimpse of what may come? Hells yes. It has the potential to bring what and who we learn about in Dark Alpha's Hunger back around if the series continues (which I totally hope it does) and will give the series an added fullness that seemed to be slightly lacking by just finishing with Death and her Reaper. This book was absolutely what the series needed since I was getting a little tired of each MC pairing confronting Bran only to have both sides end up unsatisfied and achieving a narrow escape with more questions than answers. The repetition was getting a little predictable. Dark Alpha's Awakening, however, had enough surprises and enlightening connections that it broke the pattern and gave us both closure and hope for more.
With Death dying the reapers have to get together to figure out how to save her. We have hidden our feelings forever I can't survive without her and have to make her realize this. We need to fight together to ensure she lives.
This story had so many levels to it. I was enthralled from the minute I opened the book. There are so many elements to it.
** I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for a honest review**
A big thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the ARC. I am voluntarily reviewing this book. This is part of a series. I don't know about this one. Is it just me? I found this to be very confusing, I struggled with the story. Not sure if it's because I haven't read the others in the series of not. Maybe this just isn't a good stand alone book. I just don't think this far fantasy line is for me. If I am honest- I skimmed this book. I give it 3 stars. I am sure others will enjoy apparently just not for me.
No one escapes Death, even when they try to steal her power. This book is fantastic! The Reapers lead by Erith have been mysterious and lethal. Just the kind of sexy dangerous which lures an adrenal junkie in! This final showdown between Death aka Erith and Bran is a long time coming.
The focus of this book is battling Bran, Death's first reaper who is wreaking havoc. There is so much more in this book. Ms. Grant weaves a rich tale of jealousy, betrayal, rage, sacrifice and loyalty. It is an epic fantasy tied together with love.
Cael is a fae warrior whom Erith sees years before her first reaper creation. His loyalty, intellect and dedication is what captures her attention. Watching him over the centuries she grows more and more fond of him, even after she's created her reapers. Cael's addition to the group is late in coming which is a good thing in that he was not betrayed until very late. A bad thing because Bran becomes envious of Cael's attention. Most of this back story is explained rather than experienced. What is happening now, is the final confrontation between Erith and Bran. Or really, Cael and Bran. When it comes to love turned into hatred, cruelty springs to the forefront. Bran is sadistic and hot headed as he destroys and tears down everything and everyone Erith holds dear to her.
I loved Erith. In my mind, she looks like Death from Neil Gaiman's Sandman series. Erith is a female of unknown orgins with immense power. When she throttles herself back, I feel for her. Because as a woman, many times we have to hold ourselves back to prevent people from either turning on us or from freaking out about our power. What is different in this story is that Erith family she's created doesn't want to her to hold back and revels in both her past and present. Erith may have been a bringer of chaos and bloodbaths, but she's grown up from it and she is now in a different place. Shall we say, enlightened? Her growth and searching for her meaning is a universal path that speaks to all.
To find a male who can appreciate Erith and also be able to be a partner is difficult. Ms. Grant does a lovely job of creating the situation to allow for this to happen. This romance is sweet and at long last here. I thought it would never happen for Erith. The action is nonstop starting from the very first page. The alliances are tricky and the tie ins from Dragon King series weave a complex tapestry filled with subplots. I love it.
This paranormal romance is thoroughly enjoyable conclusion to the Reaper Series. Recommended to romance lovers who enjoy drawn out love affairs that end in happily ever after.
I have been eagerly awaiting this story ever since I dove into the middle of the Reapers series! I am pleased to say that it didn't disappoint!
This story was action packed, if a little rushed at times, which made the story suffer a bit for me. The recap and origins story at the beginning of the book didn't help much either. When things got going, though, they hit big! I loved how much of the plot lines got resolved, while adding new mysteries and trials for the characters!
Speaking of the characters, I loved that Cael and Erith finally got together and how they did so! Cael demonstrated that he was Erith's equal in every way, and never lost sight of his love for her. I loved that Erith stopped denying that she had also had fallen for Cael. I liked the fact that Erith wound up a bit of a submissive in the bedroom, as it was something I had trouble reconciling in my mind regarding her.
If the series ended right now, I think it would be in a good place to do so, as long as the lingering plot lines would be tied up in other Dragon Kings books, but I'm hoping to see a few more books from this series yet!
The Reapers are an elite group of Assassins. They are lead by Erith who is also called Death. She is facing her most dangerous enemy. Bran, one of her Reapers is filled with hatred toward Erith and wants to kill her. He has been stealing her powers. She’s dying. Will she be able to defeat Bran with all that’s happening? I couldn’t put down Dark Alpha’s Awakening. I needed to see how Erith would deal with this untenable situation. I was glad that Cael stood beside her. Their love and desire is apparent. They deserve to be together. Unfortunately it’s not to be. Or is it? Their passion and commitment are so powerful. The setting and the dialogue help add drama to the series. I wondered if the Mistress of War and the Reapers would be victorious. In my opinion this is the most powerful book in the Reaper series. I’m looking forward to the next story. I want to know what happens to Xaneth.
I received a copy of this book which I voluntarily read and reviewed. My comments are my honest opinion.
