Dark Alpha's Awakening is the seventh book in the Reapers series by Donna Grant. The wait is finally over for the Bran and Erith showdown, and boy it did not disappoint! This series has a perfect blend of fantasy, action, some hot sexy bits.
The reaper series focuses on the brotherhood of elite assassins that wage war, protecting the weak and defenseless from Fae. But now the hunter has become the hunted. No matter how powerful these warriors are, the have no idea what lies ahead. Erith also known as Death is the mistress of war. . . a warrior of true beauty and death incarnate. Over the years she has had a secret admirer. . . Cael a Reaper who has been infatuated since the beginning.
With the reapers on the edge of extinction, and a war brewing . . . Erith has no time for love.
But Cael captures her heart anyway.
A perfect fantasy romance that will knock your socks off.
This is Book 7 in the Reaper’s series. I have to say that I think this was my favorite of all of them. This is Cael’s and Erith’s story. Erith is known as Death and Cael is a leader of the only known Reaper’s team. Cael and Erith are both very strong personality people. We find out so much about Bran and why he’s been causing trouble. There is so much excitement going on in this story that you won’t be bored. I loved it! It’s a fast-moving story and gives us more background on everyone, especially Erith. As I said, I loved it and I think you will, too. I voluntarily read and reviewed this book that I received from Netgalley.
This was such a good story, I loved every word of it. It is very well written and flows nicely. Each character was unique in their own way. I loved Erith and Cael. I look forward to reading more.
4.5 stars--DARK ALPHA’S AWAKENING is the seventh instalment in Donna Grant’s contemporary, adult REAPER paranormal/fantasy romance series. This is Reaper Cael’s story line. The REAPERS is a spin off from Donna’s DARK KINGS series which is a spinoff from Donna’s DARK WARRIOR series which in turn is a spin off from Donna’s DARK SWORD series- all set in the Highlands of Scotland. You do not have to have read any of the previous series to understand the premise but many of the events overlap with the events of the Dark Kings. DARK ALPHA’S AWAKENING can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty but I recommend reading the series in order for back story and cohesion.
SOME BACKGROUND: The Reapers (believed to be a folk lore amongst the Fae) are a group of Dark and Light Fae, selected by Death (aka Erith), on their own deathbed, to do her bidding-Death is the judge and jury; the Reapers are the executioners. The Reapers are not harbingers of death, but are tasked with destroying the Light and Dark Fae who have crossed a line from which there is no return. All Reapers must follow two rules: never to fall in love; and never to reveal their existence to anyone. If you have read Donna’s DARK KINGS series you will recognize the familiarity between the two series as both follow a similar plot and premise including betrayal by one of their own. Bran is a former Reaper who fell in love but Death ended their relationship by destroying his heart and the woman he loved, sentencing Bran to Netherworld for millions of years. Upon his escape, Bran sets about to destroy the Reapers, and seeks revenge against the woman known as Death.
Told from dual third person perspectives (Cael and Erith) DARK ALPHA’S AWAKENING follows Cael, the leader of the Reapers, and Death aka Erith, as they prepare to do battle with former Reaper Bran. Bran has been amassing an army of the Dark Fae in a build up towards war, a war wherein Bran has plans to destroy the Reapers, and take down the woman known as Death, for destroying his heart and the woman he loved. Erith, or more precisely, the Mistress of War, has reinvented herself as Death-the judge and jury of the Dark and Light Fae- but also a woman who has fallen in love with one of her own. Bran’s betrayal and need for focused revenge against the family that were once his brethren and fellow Reapers forces Death and Cael to being together all of the Reapers in an effort to stop Bran’s destruction of the world.
DARK ALPHA’S AWAKENING is a revealing, energetic and fast paced story of family, betrayal, vengeance and love. We are privy to Erith’s beginnings: her development into the Mistress of War, and eventual leadership of Death’s Reapers. Erith has fallen in love with one of her Reapers, a man who is equally smitten with our story line heroine. Cael’s own powers begin to grown exponentially, powers that will directly affect his standing with the Reapers and Death. For fans of Donna’s Dark Kings series surprising revelations will bring to rest a few unanswered questions and concerns, yet continuing to tease the readers about Rhi’s King, and Con’s mate.

Wow what an action packed story! In usual fashion I’ve jumped in blind to this series at book 7 and yet it could still hold its own and made me want to read the rest.
.
Our heroine is Death and our hero is one of her Reapers. Both have secretly loved and pined for the other for thousands of years but never given away their feeling for the other. When Death’s life is in trouble (total oxymoron) finally they let each other in before fighting for not only her life but the life of all Reapers and the world (epic levels here).
.
I really liked the way that Death was given feelings and a backstory as well as character growth, and was matched with a hero who could handle her power. This book was super easy to read and even though it was epic and full of action it was light instead of gritty. I definitely want to check out what more this author has to offer!
“His ability caused others to fear him. But not her. Never her.”
There are just some authors who have something special that makes their writing magical and Donna Grant is definitely one of them.
Dark Alpha's Awakening is the seventh book in the Reaper series and it’s another winner. Erith and Cael are amazing characters and well suited to this action packed well written story. I loved everything about this book and can’t wait to read what Donna Grant writes next
In the last few Reaper books, the author has been inevitably drawing us into the life and love of death the leader of the Reapers. In this book we get to learn the back story of a beautiful woman known as Erith and how she became Death and created the reapers to become the conscience of the fae. This is definitely not the book to pick up as the first book in the series since readers might be lost without the sequence of the earlier books though this is undoubted one of the most exciting books in the series.
Bran, who was once a reaper betrayed death and was punished with banishment that he managed to escape from. While he continues to seek ways to destroy the reapers he has figured out how to drain death of her powers. As death stands powerless and alone and afraid, Cael the leader of the reapers who has loved her for a long time finally declares his love and stands by her side encouraging her to do what needs to be done to win a decisive victory.
The unfolding story is fascinating. As Cael and Erith explore their relationship, Death is ready to pick up her sword and take a stand against Bran. Death and the reapers find some unexpected allies even as they are surprised by Bran's allies. I truly love how Ms. Grant effortlessly moves her characters from one series to another making them a part of the unfolding story.
As one mystery is solved and another couple finds love the mystery and intrigue continues to hold sway. I can't wait to see how the story will evolve next between the Dark Kings and the Reapers.
I have not read any of the other books in this series and I will be remedying that because this book just blew me away. We get so much action and all the chills and thrills I love in a good book.
Erith and Cael have one heck of a fight to get through. All the Reapers are in for the battle of a lifetime against a trader Bran. Those once thought Foe may, in turn, be a friend and vice versa... A wickedly great read.
DARK ALPHA’S AWAKENING is not only the long-awaited chance to see how Cael and Erith would work their way to each other but the most epic paranormal battle I’ve experienced in a very long time.
I’ve loved seeing how Death (Erith) has grown and changed over the course of this series. To see her beginning was priceless and answered some questions for me. She and Cael were complete with each other and even though it took a long time to get to this point, their romance was near perfect for me.
I would love to talk details about DARK ALPHA’S AWAKENING but I simply can’t – I won’t ruin your enjoyment of discovering this magic for yourself. All I’m willing to say is you will not be disappointed – at all.
If you have followed the Reaper and the Dark Kings series then you will find some answers and yet there is still unfinished business that will, hopefully, continue the magic of this world for a bit longer. I hate to say good-bye to characters that I’ve seen grow, develop and find what completes them in their life partner. Yet, I don’t pretend to know what is coming next – I just know that I still want more.
*I received an e-ARC of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley. That does not change what I think of this story. It is my choice to leave a review giving my personal opinion about this book.*
I’ve been a fan of this author for a long time and have enjoyed this series. This books was a great addition to the series. I would recommend reading the other books in the series.
Donna Grant was one of the first paranormal romance authors I read, and I really enjoyed her books. I moved more toward historical romances, and I haven't read much of this genre in a while. This book reminded me why I loved paranormal romance and Ms. Grant's exciting storytelling.
I will admit right off the bat that not having read the previous books in this series left me a bit lost. Apparently the many characters previously had numerous adventures together. Did it ruin my enjoyment of this story? Not in the least! I am now determined to go back and read about the rest of Death's Reapers.
Cael was one of Erith's (aka "Death" and the "Mistress of War") Reapers. They have had feelings for each other for ages, and here it becomes too much to resist. It's hard to have romance during a time of war between the Light and Dark Fae! Erith is an incredibly strong woman - she's called Death, after all - but Cael is nothing to sneeze at. Who else could make Death weak in the knees when he's being commanding? Things come to a head when Erith and the Reapers battle it out with arch enemy Bran. The story became exciting and totally un-put-downable, plus also made me cry. Can't wait to read more of Ms. Grant's Reapers!
I received an ARC of this book courtesy of the publisher and NetGalley. I received no compensation for my review, and all thoughts and opinions are entirely my own.
Cael finally gets his story! and we now know the history to his relationship to Erith (death)! and we know about her background! Heavy on the action and mystery of the danger to the world but still, the romance and the intrigue between Cael and Erith is the main event. How did Bran become so powerful? Why did Erith allow him to gain access to all that he does? What will Cael do to complete his quest? All these and more will be answered.
Please note that this is part of a series (Reapers) and ties in closely with another series (Dark Kings) so while it is possible to read it as a standalone, it is my recommendation that you read it in order.
Woohoo!! Many loose ends tied up, questions answered and insight is given in this Reapers series newest book, Dark Alpha's Awakening by Donna Grant. A full length story which is what is necessary for Death to finally have her story told. An unrequited love story where the feelings must finally come to light.
Everything in the past books have been building up to this book. Ms. Grant is the queen of building an overarching theme, giving the reader several subplots then masterfully brings it all together. If you have been reading the series, this is a must read soon. If you are new to the series I would suggest you begin at the beginning to follow all the events that have taken place previously leading up to the draining of Death’s essence.
This series dipped a little in the middle but is picking back up. Although there are tons of subplots and even more characters with weird names, this one was engaging, interesting, and the romance was spot on. Death is a fantastic character.
This novel was fantastic. As the first full length novel in the Reapers series, fans expected a lot and Donna Grant certainly delivered. Death has been slowly dying thanks to Bran stealing her magic and life force she knows this but she can't face Cael knowing how weak she has become. Cael will do anything for Death including dying again. If that is what it takes to defeat Bran he will gladly do it. In this EPIC conclusion to the war with Bran the larger war is just heating up and the Reapers will be needed more than ever.
Death & Cael's story is as good as you hoped it would be as you read the series. Both Cael and Erith are strong characters. She is very powerful. You learn more about her and her role as Death and Mistress of War. Cael is a strong leader, but he knows how to step back and let Erith do her thing.
This is the seventh book in the series but can be read as a stand-alone. Erith/Death is in trouble, Bran has escaped is prison and is draining her of her power. Cael is the leader of the Reapers and do whatever it takes to save death. Amazing addition to this series! Great read with loads of drama and suspense. Wonderful characters with steamy chemistry. I recommend reading the entire series!
Highly entertaining, emotionally thrilling, sexy, witty and engaging adventure filled with heart pounding danger, intriguing action and unexpected twists and turns.... This gripping journey had me from beginning to end and makes me want to tell everyone they need to read the Reaper series.
So I have been so invested in this world Donna Grant has created. I have been a fan since Dangerous Highlander. I have loved every single character and I am just so in love with everything about this series and all the ones before it. I feel like I have been waiting for this book in particular for such a long time. Death is such an interesting character. I wanted her story from the first Reaper book and I was not at all disappointed.
If you haven't read this series I highly recommend it. This series is technically a spin off of the Dark Kings series and I absolutely think they should be read in the correct order. Plus like I said this world is fantastic and you really don't want to miss out on a single word Donna Grant writes!
It’s Erith and Caels story!
It feels like I’ve been waiting so long for their story and it’s finally here!
Lots of action in this one, some questions answered but more questions added to the growing pile, some things are resolved while others are slowly coming to light.
I’m being deliberately vague for two reasons (one I don’t want to spoil anything big that could ruin the book for you. And two....you need to read the book) if your new to this series I would say that you should start at the beginning, there are recaps but starting out with this book is barely dipping your toe in this intricately woven world this author has created.
You become a bit of a detective seeing clues and hints to other ongoing plot points this world has to be experienced you won’t regret it.
I was worried that Erith was going to be disappointing she seemed to have I don’t know given up?
But I needn’t have this didn’t last especially when someone she loves is in danger.
I love how everything is all connected this world that Donna Grant has created is truly amazing it shows how talented this author is. You can feel the emotions leaping off the pages it’s as though your right there with characters.
I found my self looking at the page number to see how much was left before this current visit into this world was over and trying to slow down my reading to make it last a little longer.
Cael goes through some big changes during this book due to events that I don’t want to spoil , I was gripping onto my iPad during these scenes. There is also heat and romance which was perfectly written.
Cael and Erith are equals and well matched they have earned and fought hard for their well deserved HEA. The show down with Usaeil is coming closer and I definitely can’t wait to see her get what’s coming to her That’s going to be explosive.
I look forward to my next visit to this world
I can’t wait for the next book
