The first half of the book was fantastic. Wonderful character development, nice sense of mystery as to who each of the women was referring to, etc. The end became a little more problematic - the climax was anti climactic, the reveal about Sabine was as well, and the sudden loss of the unreliable narrators was jarring (slight spoiler ahead but compare Beth’s veiled discussions of her plans to suddenly nonchalantly saying yes I stole the churches money.)
Wow! This story had my attention from the first page. I will say there is a trigger for some people in here: abuse, both physical and mental. I finished this story in 2 days! I just had to know what happened to Sabine. There were so many aspects of her storyline to make you wonder who was going to be blamed for her disappearance. Her husband was such a jerk that you can’t help but blame him. I don’t want to say too much so I don’t give away the ending or any spoilers. Once I got to 75% I stayed up late to finish it. While I started to think of the twist as it was happening it was still an enjoyable read to me!
Beautiful Sabine, a real estate agent, has failed to come back from a listing appointment, and her husband Jeffrey is, of course, suspect number one. Meanwhile, we get the story of Beth, who is on the run from her abusive husband. She goes to great lengths to throw him off the trail, but knows he'll find her. And some of the narration is from Marcus, the police detective investigating Sabine's disappearance.
The plot: fast paced and engaging.
The characters: pretty cookie-cutter and shallowly drawn. No real connections forged with any of them.
The twist: Unfortunately the twist was so similar to the book I was concurrently listening to on audio that I started to get them confused. I won't say what the device used is, because it's definitely a spoiler, but I've seen it so many times lately that I'm starting to expect some version of it from every thriller I read.
A fun read, but not a standout in this genre in any way.
5/5 Star Review I was given this ARC on netgalley for a honest review...
Dear Wife is a suspenseful and twisty read, about a woman on the run and a woman gone missing... One of them is reported missing, while the other becomes hunted by her abuser.
Beth Murphy is on the run... For nearly a year Beth has been planning her escape. A ordinary day for most, becomes a new beginning for Beth, one with a new look, a new name, a new city. Beth has planned this day down to a T... If Beth makes the smallest slip her violent husband will find her..
Sabine Hardison is missing... Her husband Jeffery returns home from work, to find her gone, wherever she is she has taken nothing with her. Her abandon car is the only evidence that the police have, that all point to foul play. The stuff that is dug up about Sabine's careful planning for the future, show signs of a troubled marriage.
The detective on the case will stop at nothing to find out what happened and bring this missing woman home.
This book was very well written, it had be turning the pages so fast, I couldn't believe what I was reading, I had to know was Sabine the woman who changed her name, and left so many trials to show that she was alive....
Marcus tries his best to target Jeffery for Sabine being missing, he knows that Jeffery has abused Sabine in the past, and their life was anything but normal. He also has Ingrid who is Sabines twin sister breathing down his neck. Ingrid tells Marcus the detective on the case of her missing sister, so much about Sabine and Jeffery's lives..
Kimberely Belle has knocked this one out the park, she has brought us such an amazing page turner.
Dang!
This book was a quick but engaging read. What a dang twisty turner of a read.
A local woman goes missing. A woman is on the run. Three points of view tell their sides of the story after Sabine goes missing: Jeffrey - the husband of Sabine who is missing, Marcus - the cop assigned to the case and Beth - who has escaped an abusive relationship and is on the run.
From the first until the last page of this novel my mind was spinning and the pages were flying by. If you're looking for an engrossing page-turner this is it!
Wow this was a fantastic psychological thriller! I read this book quickly because I NEEDED to know what happened next. Beth’s character was very empowering as her story begins with her escaping her abusive husband. (Anyone remember Julia Roberts in Sleeping With The Enemy?) She’s got everything planned and she’s on the run and I feared for her pretty much the whole book.
Sabine and Jeffrey are a volatile couple and when she goes missing - everyone looks at Jeffrey. Lastly, we have Marcus, the detective looking for Sabine. He’s obsessed with the case and putting in hours and hours of work.
This book twisted and turned and had me completely invested. I had no idea what was happening so the ending really surprised me. Very clever and well done.
I was very much looking forward to reading this book having read and loved the author’s prior books. However, Dear Wife misses the mark. The story is told through several narratives; the main character, Beth - and a police officer, Marcus. Beth is on the run from an abusive husband, while Marcus investigates the disappearance of a woman named Sabine. While the first half of the book is an edge of your seat thrill ride, it was too easy to see the “twist”, and that made the last half disappointing, I was hoping there was another surprise or two coming, and that kept the pages turning, but ultimately the ending falls flat and predictable. Thank you to @NetGalley and @Harlequin Books for the digital ARC.
Wow! Just went I thought I had it figured out, I realized I knew nothing !!
This book is about an missing wife and is told from 3 points of view !
A great and a absolute do not miss read !
My first book and definitely not my last by this author !
This was an exciting read. It's a twisty, riveting thriller. The book has multiple narrators, which makes the story more intimate for the reader. A wife is missing, the husband is hiding something, a woman is on the run, and the detective is on the case. How it all comes together is brilliant and exciting, and tense. I couldn't put this book down! I will definitely read more by this author.
I received an Advance Review Copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
WOW! Officially the best psychological thriller I have ever read! Un put down able. I decided this book in one sitting. No one is who they appear to be in this thriller. It has compelling characters and one amazing plot full of twists, turns and secrets that kept me glued to the pages. Addicting and fast paced, I was not able to breathe until the very last page!!!
This is the first book I have read by Kimberly Belle and it did not disappoint. This is a thriller that follows the lives of Beth who is on the run and Sabine who is a missing person. There are many twists and the ending does not disappoint this reader.
Dear Wife is an intriguing story dealing with abuse. Kimberly's characters are so well written. There is lots lot twists that will keep you on the edge of your seat. The end has a surprise for the reader.
Kimberly Belle's Dear Wife is one I would recommend for those who enjoy domestic suspense/thrillers, and I would encourage those same readers to be patient and stick with it. Frankly, I enjoyed the ending much more than I enjoyed the book. While I applaud Belle's talent for creating a "WOW!" ending, that's also what kept my rating for this title lower. I felt as though I were stumbling in the dark throughout the whole book, not knowing enough about some characters to care about them and at other times being given information about peripheral characters that seemed to have little to no value for the story line.
Unputdownable!!
Dear Wife is a suspenseful and twisty read about a woman on the run and another who has gone missing. Are they one and the same or is there more going on than meets the eye?
“Beth” is on the run from her abusive husband. She has a plan and must not veer off course or else she will become her husband's prey.
Sabine, a prominent realtor in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, has gone missing. Her deadbeat husband, Jeffery, is the number one suspect in her disappearance.
Jeffery, well, he has some issues.
Marcus, the cop investigating Sabine’s disappearance, is on a mission. He has a lead and won’t let it go.
Told through three POV’s, Dear Wife enthralled me from the start. There are some huge twists and turns, and even though I figured one out early on, I was surprised by some others. This is a gripping thriller that hooked me from the first page to the very end. The chapters are short and the story is entertaining. There are secrets to be uncovered, lies to unravel, and drama to play out. It all culminates in a satisfying ending! I recommend to those who are looking for an entertaining psychological thriller!
I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley and Harlequin in exchange for an honest review.
Holy Smokes!!! This one was great!!! This is my first, but not last, Kimberly Belle book. She has crafted a creepy, dark and twisty story that is both domestic drama and high suspense. The story is told from several POV's and each one completely rerouted my thinking. I did figure out the major plot point but it was one heck of a ride getting there!! Thank you so much #NetGalley, Kimberley Belle and #Harlequin for this ARC!!!
My review will be posted to NetGalley, Twitter, LinkedIn and Goodreads on 4/21/2019 and Amazon and Barnes and Noble on 6/25/2019.
This book gave me Gone Girl meets Behind Closed Doors vibes.
Jeremy returns home from a work trip and finds his wife, Sabine, missing. Beth Murphy, with her new identity and thought-out plan, is on the run from her violent husband. She needs to be careful because one mistake could mean her husband finding her. Marcus, the local detective, is determined to find Sabine. The prime suspect is Jeremy, Sabine's husband who has a record of domestic violence. Where is Sabine? Who is Beth? There are many secrets to be told...
The author writes the book from three different POVs: Jeremy, Beth, and Marcus. This creates readers to automatically assume a couple of crucial points in the story. However, I realized the plot twist in the very beginning of the story, and there is more than meets the eye. I thought this was a great book. It definitely gave me Gone Girl vibes in the beginning... wife gone missing, did she plot her own escape? We get another perspective from a female character. Is she Sabine? Who is she?
Read it yourself to find out. I promise an enjoyable ride!
Thank you to Netgalley, author Kimberly Belle, and publisher Park Row, for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.
I don’t often compare novels to other books, but Dear Wife reminded me of Gone Girl in some ways. It has some twisty parts that come as a shock, characters that draw the reader in, and a rush of action that will make your heart race! There were some parts of the story that I figured out along the way, but it was wonderfully suspenseful to see how the ending would play out.
Dear Wife laid bare the intimacies of fractured marriage. Its dark themes unveil in bits and pieces, so that you’re almost caught off guard when big moments happen. This psychological thriller made me consider how you never really know what goes on behind closed doors.
I had high expectations for this book after reading (and loving) The Marriage Lie. Thankfully, I was not disappointed by Dear Wife. To say this book was addictive would be an understatement. I could NOT put it down.
The multiple viewpoints of the narrators kept me guessing throughout this book--- who was Beth? Where is Sabine? Who can we trust? I thought I had this story figured out many times, but then another twist would happen, and I'd have to change my theory.
If you are a fan of twisty thrillers and cat-and-mouse suspense novels, definitely pick this one up. Highly recommend!
Thrilling, jaw-dropping, and gripping all seem to be just short of describing Kimberly Belle’s upcoming release Dear Wife. What words can you use to describe a book more thrilling than the wildest of roller coasters? In her best book yet Belle takes the reader on a cross country road trip with a wife trying to escape her dangerous husband and with an ending that makes you question everything you thought you knew was happening guarantees that this book will be a best seller!
Wow! This book was a surprise! I could not put it down. I was so exciting and had so many twists and turns. I loved it! Will be buying this for the library for sure!!! Read this!!
