Bonnie Blythe is perfectly content with her life. She'll teach college-level Shakespeare, marry her high school sweetheart, have a couple of babies and generally live a good, albeit predictable, life. Then she walks in on her fiance getting down and dirty with someone who is patently not her on her favorite quilt. Suddenly she's single and able to accept a summer job in England without a second thought. Luckily for us, the other perk to living in England is Theo Warton; the hot best man in Bonnie's best friend's wedding. Oh and he's also the Duke of Emberton. If only Bonnie was a millionaire heiress with a good family name...
There will be a lot of readers who will absolutely love Theo, dukedom included. I have to temper my rating on this one because Theo did relatively nothing for me. Sure, he was polite, charming, and caring, but I didn’t get a heart flutter or a secret smile while I was reading. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the story and liked the characters, but Theo just fell a little flat. Conversely, I loved Bonnie. I always feel a kinship with leading ladies who love literature - especially when they bring up Anne Shirley.
The one thing that left me a little frustrated was that Bonnie and Theo’s relationship doesn’t really start to come together until the very last pages. Theo’s family obligations and Bonnie’s break up leave them with many obstacles to overcome before they can even attempt a relationship. Thank god we didn't have to wait that entire time for the sex scenes...
Another great book in this series! I thoroughly enjoyed Bonnie and Theo, this book is the perfect blend of humour and chemistry. Looking forward to the next book!
Very cute romance, with a touch of sizzle! I recommend all 3 books in this series, they are written well. The characters are very likeable and real.
Bonnie and Theo - an American academic and a British Duke! This has great banter, a neat plot, fun characters, and all in all, it's a good read. You might remember this pair from an earlier book but don't worry, this is just as terrific as a standalone. All of us can predict what's going to happen (especially once Bonnie finally realizes her boyfriend is a rat and she gets over him) but Johnson takes you on a great ride. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC!
Bonnie finds true love with Theo!
Bonnie Blythe was waiting to set a date for her wedding until her fiancé that finished his doctorate. Bonnie had decided to marry Gabe when she was eight year old and he had changed into a stranger after all this time and she threw her ring at him when she found him in bed with someone else. Bonnie had met Theo Wharton during their girl’s trip to Europe and her best friend had met Logan who was best friends with Theo. Theo like Bonnie but since she was engaged it never went further but when Bonnie ended the engagement, things changed quickly. Bonnie got a summer job teaching at Oxford and they spent a lot of time together even though his mother was encouraging Theo to marry someone with money to replenish the family coffers since his father had spent almost all the family money and he had to take care of his mother and sisters plus the people that worked for them.
I loved Smitten by the Brit because it’s almost a continuation of the first book in the series that covers Logan meeting Cassie and now Bonnie and Theo getting together with reading all three straight through is good.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
When a saucy American female with a passion for all things Shakespeare or Jane Austen meets a proper English duke with impeccable manners who is carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders, it is the recipe for a great read.
Bonnie and Theo have instant chemistry in Getting Hot With the Scot but she tamps it down because she's engaged. However, in Smitten by the Brit, everything changes when she and Gabe split up. This opens the door for her and Theo to explore their attraction. Unfortunately, Bonnie has a hard time shaking her injured pride and Theo is dealing with financial and family issues. Their timing isn't right initially. Several weeks later, Bonnie goes to England to teach a class over the summer and she and Theo reconnect. They both find that they truly have feelings for one another. Bonnie is all in but Theo is feeling burdened by family responsibilities and his mother's pressure to marry an heiress in order to financially stabilize the family's estate. Will Theo follow his responsibility to family or to his own happiness?
This second installment in Ms. Johnson's Sometimes in Love series was just as fun to read as the first and it allowed us to revisit some of our favorites from the first book. I'm really enjoying this series and look forward to reading the next one.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I will admit I was leery of this book as I was not a fan of the first book in this series, but this book seems very different. The relationship between Bonnie and Theo just seems so natural. The chemistry is exploding off the pages. They seem to work and fit with each other without much effort given on either of there parts. Yet they seem to both be faced with a choice that takes a lot of time and effort to make them work. There were some times I really wanted to reach and choke Theo, but he was one of the characters you have a really hard time disliking. I loved Theo's sister Tabby oh my gosh she was so fun and I so want to read her story and what's she's up to. I can only imagine the guy who gets who what fun that will be. I also really liked how Bonnie handled the situations with her ex she just seem to handle it with grace, This book does have strong language and sex in it so it may not be suitable for all. Over all I really did enjoy this book and glad I gave it a chance it was well worth the read.
I loved this one. The characters were great, the author transitioned from the last book well while also keeping this a great read as a stand-alone. Romantic, playful, witty, and smart. It’s one I will read again.
3.5 stars
This was a really sweet and charming read. This friends with benefits story with a touch of royal romance thrown in, was a surprising treat. It's the second book in the Sometimes in Love series, but can be read as a standalone.
I really liked Theo and Bonnie. There was something electric brewing between them and I kept waiting for their emotions to deliciously boil over. It was definitely a slow burn build up, but like all the Austen/Shakespearean references in the book, it made every stolen moment, longing glance, and brush of the hand that much more meaningful. The drama was a little cliche and I was not a fan of the silly misunderstandings that could have easily been avoided with some communication, but it was an entertaining read that had me rooting for them to get their HEA. The pacing was slow at times, making the book feel excessively long, but I did appreciate that the author took the time to allow our characters to truly get to know each other and come into their own.
The secondary cast of characters were a hoot and I especially loved Theo's sister, Tabitha. She brought some wonderful comic relief as did all of Bonnie's girlfriends. That "tutorial" given while trying on bridesmaids dresses was hilariously fantastic! I love books that showcase such strong and supportive female friendships. I would have loved an epilogue, but I'm guessing we will see more of Bonnie and Theo in later books (the same way that Cassie and Logan from book 1, Getting Hot with the Scot, appeared in this one). Overall, a fun and light romance!

DEFINITELY, MAYBE...OR LOVE, ACTUALLY?
English professor Bonnie Blythe expects her life to play out like her favorite novels, especially now that her long-term boyfriend has finally proposed. So when a shocking discovery leads Bonnie to end her engagement, she decides to close the book on love. But the plot thickens when a brand-new character enters the scene—and quickens Bonnie's heart.
With his brilliant blue eyes, sexy accent, and irresistible charm, Theo Wharton is like a romantic hero straight out of a Jane Austen novel. When fate places Bonnie in England for a summer—conveniently close to Theo—she realizes a hot friends-with-benefits fling is exactly what she needs to start a fresh chapter.
This is book #2 in this series and although I'm not a contemporary fan in general I found both of these books engaging. They are connected but there is no need to read them both in order to enjoy them as each one can stand on it's own.
If you like a bit of laughter and a sexy romance this book is definitely for you. Even though this series isn't my usual read I would like to read any future additions to it.
I gave this sexy, often times funny romance 4.5 (rounded up to 5) of 5.0 stars for plot, storyline and characterization.
I received a complimentary ARC of this book to read. This in no way affected my opinion of this book which I read and reviewed voluntarily.
Side characters from Melonie Johnson’s “Getting Hot with the Scot” get a well deserved outing in “Smitten by the Brit”, the second novel in the series. Bonnie, engaged to her fiancé since practically childhood, finds herself unexpectedly single, and Theo, the Brit who she was seriously attracted to in book one, is still available and as enticing as ever. Johnson does a great job of writing friendships among women to go with her hot romance, and I look forward to her other characters getting their turn as starring heroines.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
English professor Bonnie Blythe is happy, engaged to be married to her childhood sweetheart, and helping her friend Cassie to plan organize her upcoming wedding to Logan, the hot Scotsman whom she met when Bonnie, Cassie, and their friends took a magical UK vacation the previous summer.
Then Bonnie goes home unexpectedly early from a theater event, and finds her fiancé in their bed, on her grandmother's quilt, having sex with another woman. She's stunned, outraged--and sadly aware there were signs she maybe should have noticed.
Meanwhile, Logan's friend and best man for his wedding with Cassie, Theo Wharton, is in town. They'd all met Theo, too, on that UK vacation. He's a handsome and charming guy, but at the time, Bonnie was happily engaged. Now she's not.
Theo's almost irresistibly attractive, but Bonnie doesn't want to make the mistake of a rebound romance. And besides, he's going back to the UK in a few days.
Then Bonnie gets an offer to teach a summer course at the University of Cambridge.
Meanwhile Theo has his own problems. He finds Bonnie irresistibly attractive, too--but his mother has other plans for him, and she has a powerful argument for duty and responsibility on her side.
Once Bonnie is at Cambridge for the summer, they talk themselves into believing a "friends with benefits" fling is best for both of them, but in the process, they get to know each other, and Bonnie stumbles into learning something of what Theo's real life is like.
They both have to decide whether duty or love is more important, and if they can handle the consequences.
It's mostly light, and a lot of fun, and these are enjoyable characters to spend time with. Recommended.
I received a free electronic galley of this book from the publisher via NetGalley.
I was provided a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest and fair review.
I was really excited about Bonnie’s story after first reading about her in the previous book in the series, Getting Hot with the Scot. I didn’t end up loving this book quite as much as I expected to. I couldn’t connect with Bonnie’s character entirely. I did relate to her love of the literary world and how much of a book-nerd she was. Unfortunately she was a little flighty for me, it felt like she was consistently running away from her problems and her feelings. And she was just so melodramatic, she kept doing like these really dramatic things in reaction to situations based on what she thought one of her literary characters would do. And Theo was a bit too thick-headed for me too. In the last book in the series, Getting Hot with the Scot, the chemistry between the two main characters was intense and leapt off the page, but I didn’t feel that as much with Bonnie and Theo. The plot was a little lackluster for me, after the excitement and drama of the beginning of the book there wasn’t anything else that was really as climactic. This one wasn’t my favorite but I did still enjoy it and I like the series overall so far. I’m onto the third in the series now (it doesn’t come out til June so I likely should have waited but I’m so into the series I just couldn’t wait!)
I loved loved loved Theo and Bonnie. Melonie really draws me into her stories and makes me not want to leave. I was Smitten ;) and I’m sure everyone will be right along with me! An enjoyable storyline and I’m excited to read the third book in the series. If you haven’t started these yet, you definitely need to.
What I liked about this book was the writing style and the easy flow. There was a lot going on almost independently for Theo and for Bonnie too but it did add to the story in subtle ways. Bonnie was my favorite of the characters and I like that she self comforted with books.
Could this story be more cuter and sexy at the same time?
This is my second book in the Sometimes in Love series by Melonie Johnson and so far is my favorite. I knew it from the first one that the relationship between Theo and Bonnie would be explosive and sweet.
I cannot say much without spoiling you the premise, after the release day I would do a more elaborate review but people this a winner a sweet story about a girl who loves shakespeare and a very handsome down to earth modern duke.
Theo and Bonnie chemistry is off the chart and what I loved more is that his was very on synch with her needs, he was the true definition of a gentleman (he is a duke after all) and he always put her first which was sooo refreshing.
Bonnie was something to behold, she was the heroine of this story through and through. She took chances, even when life put her down, this red head stood up for herself and kept moving even when the world literally collapse over her, it didnt stopped her and what is was important for me is that evolve, there was some growth in her character which was a plus for me.
The only little problem I had with the book was the climax it happened almost at the end of the book and because of this I think the author didnt have proper time to tight everything in an adequate pace, everything was solved in a snap and is not that I didnt like it but it was just too fast for my taste.
Aside from that, everything is absolutely perfect. Melonie won me with the first one but she totally stole my heart with this one!
This book was sent to me via netgalley in exchange for an honest opinion.
A 4.75 out 5 stars for me
If you love Austen and Shakespeare (or even if you don't) you will love the second installment in the Sometimes In Love series by Melonie Johnson.
Bonnie and Theo have made commitments. She to a long time fiancé, and he to his dukedom and family. There is, however, a definite spark between them! Will they find a way to true love and happiness?
I personally hope that Ms. Johnson has few responsibilities and distractions in her life so that she may continue to write many more books in this series!
Thanks to the author and publisher of #SmittenByTheBrit and #NetGalley for allowing me to read this arc in return for an honest review.
Smitten by a Brit by Melonie Johnson is the 2nd book in her Sometimes in Love series. I did not read the first book, but this read very well as a standalone. We meet Bonnie Blythe, our heroine, as she is helping her best friend Cassie in preparation for her wedding. Bonnie, who is an English professor and a Jane Austen fanatic, is engaged, hoping to follow in her friends’ footsteps, but when she finds her fiancée in bed with another woman, she breaks up with him and closes herself to love.
Theo Wharton, our hero, is the best man and has been attracted to Bonnie for awhile (in the 1st book), but knows she is engaged and maintains just a friendship. Theo is a Duke, and is being pressured by his mother to find a woman who comes from wealth, since they are running out of money to maintain their estates. When he runs into Bonnie, he learns that she has now broken up with her fiancée, and since Bonnie is spending the summer in England for work, in a short time a slow built romance will blossom, with both satisfied being friends with benefits.
Theo was a great hero, who though he knew he was falling in love with Bonnie, he also knew he had to step up to his responsibility. Bonnie surprised herself when she allowed herself to fall in love with Theo, and also loved living in England. Will Bonnie get her dream? Will Theo give up Bonnie and marry the rich girl? You need to read this book to find out.
I did like Theo and Bonnie together, as they made a great sweet couple, despite the odds against them. I loved Tabitha, Theo’s sister, who was a blast. I adored Bonnie’s friends and the escapades the girls did, including when Tabitha joined them. This was a fun part.
Smitten by a Brit was a sweet tender romance written well by Melonie Johnson. If you love contemporary romance, with a flair that is similar to historical romances, I suggest you read this fun enjoyable book.
Smitten by the Brit is the follow-up book to Getting Hot with the Scot, a fun and flirty book by Melonie Johnson. This book follows the story of Bonnie and Theo, who you met in the first book. Bonnie is engaged to be married to her longtime boyfriend Gabe but she finds herself thinking about Theo. One thing leads to another, they see each other again and fun ensues. It was a very romantic story, with a dash of royalty, steam and a lovely ending.
I found that this book kind of fell flat. I enjoyed the development of the characters in the story, but the plot wasn’t very climatic for me. I also didn’t like the intense intimate scenes. I didn’t realize this book had those. It was just ok of a read, unfortunately.
