Second in the series
Bonnie Blyth's five week tour in Europe with four of her besties was fun. She ignored the strong attraction she had for Duke Theo Wharton on their U.K. Leg of the tour, not realizing fiancee Gabe wasn't doing the same at home.
When she walked in on him and his assistant in her bed, she walked back out.
Theo came to the States for his friend Logan's wedding and they not only conquered their insecurities and hooked up, but found out what everyone else saw. The pair were soul mates and happiest together despite any obstacles.
Full of humor, snark, sweet and steamy scenes, it's a winner in contemporary romance.
I requested and received a NetGalley ARC to peruse.
Now this one sneaked up on me and got more enjoyable the more I read.
She's an American academic, obsessed with Shakespeare. He's an English Duke with a stately home and ancestral seat that is in desperate need of hard cash to stay afloat.
As a brit reading this I smiled a few times at some of the phrases used by the Duke and his friend. I'm sure anyone who's ever watched Miss Marple or Downton Abbey is convinced we all partake of high tea of an afternoon and preface our conversations with a haughty 'I say.' I'm sorry to dispel that myth, but sadly Marple and Downton are the only places I've seen that go on. I know, sorry. Perhaps I just need posher friends, idk.
That did yank me out of the story a few times, particularly at the start, but as I read on, I noticed it less and enjoyed the chemistry and the tension and - for I cannot lie - the smut instead.
It's a complete story but part of a series featuring recurring characters. Recommended as a romantic escape read.
Thanks to the publisher via netgalley for the arc.
I unfortunately did not enjoy this book, I found it too similar a storyline to the first book by Melonie Johnson, maybe I read them to close together, but it was too predictable.
This story was a fun and an easy read. I enjoyed the characters and the plot. The ending was a little too "perfect" for me, but I would still suggest reading the book. This is the perfect book to read in the summertime for some light, fun, beach reading.
It's hard for me to explain why I vibed with Melonie Johnson's "Smitten by the Brit" over the first book in the series,"Hot For The Scot." But this book had me grinning through most of the first half and pleasantly anxious for the happy ever after until nearly the very end. Besides being pleasant armchair travel fodder, some of the dialog and characterization problems that bothered me in the first book of this series have been resolved in Johnson's sophomore effort. Theo felt familiar but still interesting - wealthy but still approachable; a beta hero without being a complete pushover. Bonnie danced with being a Manic Pixie Dream Girl at moments but stayed grounded in details about her ambitions for her career and complex love for her friends.
I particularly enjoyed meeting her parents but wished we could have seen a little more of them, especially given how much brain energy she gave to telling her parents about the changes in her life and the fact that she's probably moving to a different continent permanently by the end of the book. It was also nice to get a peek at how Logan and Cassie have settled into coupled bliss, without the histrionics of their internal monologues.
Although I wouldn't rank this series among my favorites, I'm anxious to see if the next book in this series improves in the same leaps and bounds as this one. I'm glad I gave this series a second shot and I'll be looking for Once Upon a Bad Boy (Sometimes in Love, #3) when it's published.
Thank you to NetGallery for a copy of this book in exchange for a fair review.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the digital ARC.
Smitten by the Brit is the second book in the Sometimes in Love series by Melonie Johnson. I didn't get the chance to read the first book, Getting Hot with the Scot, but I felt this book can easily be read as a standalone. Personally, I feel like I would have enjoyed it more had I read about Bonnie and Theo's first meeting, as well as Cassie and Logan's relationship, since book number two is all about Bonnie and Theo reconnecting as Cassie and Logan plan their wedding.
Sparks flew when Bonnie Blythe and Theo Wharton first met last summer, but Bonnie was engaged at the time so neither of them could act on those sparks. When they reconnect almost a year later, Bonnie has called off her engagement (cheating fiances are the worst, am I right?) and accepted a summer teaching position in England. With no distance or pre-existing relationships keeping them apart, Bonnie and Theo begin a 'friends with benefits' relationship since Bonnie is still processing her failed engagement and Theo is still under the controlling rule of his mother (did I mention he's a Duke and needs to marry a rich heiress to save his family?). It's not long before this arrangement leads to some very real feelings and the two of them will need to decide if their relationship is worth taking a risk on.
I wanted to like this book so much more than I actually did. Maybe if I had read the first book I would have understood Bonnie and Theo's feelings for each other but having just met them in Smitten by the Brit I just didn't feel that strong connection. It is mentioned many, many times how attractive they each find each other but I found it a bit hard to believe that instant attraction from the first meeting was enough to last a year AND inspire Theo to get involved with a woman who had just called off her engagement / inspire Bonnie to dive into a 'friends with benefits' relationship after just ending her engagement.
I also felt the pacing was a bit off and plot points (like the British summer professor hitting on Bonnie when she first arrives... what happened to him) were a bit unnecessary. I also felt certain plot points (namely Cassie and Logan's wedding) deserved more attention but were skipped over.
For the most part the writing is good, especially if you can get past the alliteration (Bonnie Blythe, Cassie Crow...) and Theo calling his mom Mama (does British men really call their moms Mama? I would've guessed mother. I also would have preferred mother). The premise is interesting, but it wasn't executed the way I thought it would be, nor the way I wanted it to be.
This might have just been a case of "it's not you, it's me" because I have seen a lot of rave reviews for this book and series.
I do commend the author for making sure consent was always explicit before Bonnie and Theo explored the benefits of their friendship.

We all remember Bonnie and Theo from the first book. There was already some attraction in London - and now Bonnie is back in Chicago and Theo is there on business for a few days! But of course Bonnie is still engaged to Gabe, right? Yup, but he still hasn't decided on a wedding date - and now he never will - because we just caught him cheating on us!!!!
Now Bonnie is free to for Theo. But of course it's not as easy as that.
Theo's mom needs him to marry someone with lots of money - to save the family.
And Bonnie can't just jump into a new relationship ...
WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO BONNIE & THEO???
READ THE BOOK TO FIND OUT! ☺

Well, that was adorable!!!!
Such a sweet and funny and British-Hot-Guy romance! ☺
We never liked what we heard about Gabe in the last book - so nobody was sad to see him cheat and leave the picture! Now Theo and Bonnie could get their Happy End - but it might take them a looong while until we'll get there. Lots of obstacles in the way. He's from England. He needs a rich wife. He would be her rebound. But - those are all things they can overcome! And they will - and the reader has an amazing time watching them fight for that happily ever after!
► SMITTEN BY THE BRIT was a sweet & beautiful & romantic & literature-y & adorably British love story! READ IT!
Some tiny little things I didn't love-love.... it was a bit slowish here and there.
And I'm not really in love with some the writing. Melonie uses those weirdly constructed sentences a lot. At least one on every page! It probably has an official grammatical name - but I don't know it and I don't like it.
Examples - I don't have my kindle here right now - I highlighted them all. But I think I can create some of my own ... let me think ... A german girl, Bianca has problems understanding this sh*t. / An artist, he never had enough money for food.
Know what I mean????? Me no likey! ☺
BUT - the story was really cute - Theo was soo adorably British and sweet and Bonnie was really great too. Can't wait to read Sadie's book next!
Cute book, but not as good as the first book in the series. Theo and Bonnie were both likeable, but I didn't feel the chemistry as strongly from Bonnie as I hoped. And the secondary characters - her group of girlfriends - had a minimal role, which was missed. Overall an easy and quick weekend read.
I enjoy a good British invasion and while 'Smitten by the Brit' had an enjoyable story line I found the characters to be fairly flat.
The second book by Melonie Johnson is a winner. Smitten by the Brit takes up the story of Bonnie and Theo after Cassie and Logan are engaged. Bonnie is a professor who loves Shakespeare and Austen. Theo is actually the Duke of Pemberton, who's family has fallen on hard times. His mother insists that he marry for money to maintain the family title. They met the prior summer when Bonnie was on vacation with her friends. The attraction was instant but Bonnie is engaged. Fast forward to the next year when Bonnie reconnects with Theo at a party, finds out her fiance is cheating on her and is offered a summer job at Cambridge. She spends a glorious summer in the UK with Theo but his mother is still insisting the he marry an heiress. Are they destined to be star crossed lovers or will they have a happily ever after? This is a fun and delightful read. I recommend it highly.
I loved it. This must have been the second book, as there was a fair amount of background set up presented, but it was well done. I liked Bonnie and Theo, the main characters. Although the miscommunication issues started to annoy towards the end. Really? Another runner?! The Austen and Shakespeare quotes were fun. I loved the Austen and Bronte like scenes. I'm glad to have found a new author.
Bonnie Blythe has always seen her life as a novel and her carefully laid plans are leading her towards her HEA until an unexpected discovery makes her take a sharp turn towards uncharted territory.
Theo Wharton has his own issues. A peer of the realm with an estate in financial trouble, he’s expected to marry into money to save his family and all the people who depend on him. But he got his sights on the little redhead he met in London the previous summer and he’s not ready to give up that dream just yet.
I liked Bonnie and Theo’s story even better. I found it charming, utterly romantic and the Brit really stole my heart. Smart, sexy and charming, a perfect gentleman at all times and with a hero complex to boot, Theo makes an amazing book boyfriend. From Shakespeare to Star Trek, the man seems to know it all!
Then there are Bonnie’s new adventures, the girls, Theo’s sisters and Cassie’s wedding preparations (refer to the bridesmaids’ dresses shopping chapter), to make the backbone of a laugh out loud story which is also romantic and sexy.
I have definitely found a new rom-com author to follow and can’t wait to read what comes next.

I received a free advanced copy of this book from NetGalley.com. This is my unbiased and voluntary review.
This delightful read continues from where the previous book ended. Cassie and Logan are soon to be married and Bonnie can't help being a bit jealous of her BBF, as she has been planning to marry Gabe, her fiancee, since she was eight and has been engaged to him for over a year with still no wedding date in sight. She had managed to control her attraction to Theo, Logan's best friend, when the girls were in England, but when she walks in on Gabe shtupping another woman on their bed, she has had enough. She accepts an opportunity to teach for the summer in London, with the added benefit of spending more time with Theo. But will Theo's ducal duties force him into a loveless marriage with an heiress?
This is a fast reading, well written book with endearing characters and an amusing plot.
Smitten? Too mild a word for this story! I was madly in love with these characters from Getting Hot with the Scot and happy to return to their world. Still best friends, Bonnie and Cassie get ready for Cassie’s wedding in Scotland. No spoilers—- through joy and heartbreak, duty and love, maid of honor, Bonnie and best mate, Theo work toward their own hopefully, HEA. This is a must read!
I voluntarily reviewed this advanced reader copy and I have not been compensated in any way.
4 steamy stars! This book is crazy, sexy and fun! I flew through through this adorable story. I ADORE Theo. He's so polished and charming. Bonnie was quirky and adorable. The chemistry between the two was amazing. I loved all the old literature references throughout the book. I would definitely read this one again and I'm looking forward to reading the others in this series!
Bonnie Blyth, Instructor of Shakespearean literature, has her life all planned out with a boyfriend she has known since grade school. When an unhappy discovery breaks their engagement, Bonnie decides to take on a summer program at Cambridge putting her near Theo Wharton to whom she is attracted. Bonnie and Theo met in the first book of this series and something sparked then, but she remained true to her fiancé.
Theo Wharton, Duke of Emberton is equally attracted to Bonnie; however, he has some heavy familial responsibilities that preclude marrying anyone but an heiress to keep his ancestral estate afloat. Theo’s mother has very definite ideas who that should be and is not amused by his affections being elsewhere.
Bonnie’s best friend is getting married in the UK so she is helping to plan a wedding while trying to get over her own wounded heart. Theo does much to assuage that once she is in England and they spend time together. As her favorite guy William said, “the course of true love never did run smooth” which definitely applies for Bonnie and Theo.
I like Bonnie and Theo as a couple; however, one of my issues with this story is that they actually do not spend that much time together. Theo also lets his mother run rough shod and for a thirty year old man, that is not a good look. The dialogue and repartee are entertaining although sometimes verging on the silly. This book can be read as a standalone; however references are made to events in the first book in the series where her friend, Cassie, and Logan come together.
I received and requested this book for myself to read and review. Wow this book is steamy. The chemistry between Bonnie and Theo. The story line was smooth and flowed well. This is a romantic with some comedy as well. Not for young readers or for the faint of heart 😉. This can be ready anywhere but maybe someplace in a very public place. So when your fanning yourself and laughing out loud you don't get weird books. This book won't disappoint you. Looking forward the next book by author Melonie Johnson.
I received a copy of Smitten by the Brit by Melonie Johnson from St. Martin's Press and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!
I give this book 5 stars! Smitten by the Brit by Melonie Johnson did not disappoint. It was a snappy read with likable characters and a progressive plot. Melonie Johnson's storytelling is outstanding! I definitely recommend this witty romance.
I absolutely loved this book even though I didn't read book one. But after reading this book I believe I would love it as much as I did this book. The characters were described really well. I highly recommend it to anyone and everyone.
If you like a man that is tender and polite and chivalrous this is the book for you. I loved Theo.....this is the second book in the series and is just as fast paced and funny as the first. I can’t wait for the next one. Thanks netgalley...
