I enjoyed this frothy fast paced romance. Bonnie Blythe is an English professor. She's engage to her childhood sweetheart and is ready to take the next step. Her dreams falls apart when she finds that he's cheating. Can she start over and find true love? Bonnie is to trusting. I was sorry that her fiancée took advantage of her, but I was glad that she realized that she deserved better. Theo is the perfect hero. I liked his caring and gentleness. These two are drawn to each other. It was romantic seeing Bonnie and Theo together. Their dialogue was smart and sassy. It added spice and humor. Theo is committed to his family. As the only male he must marry for money. Who has to do that? Melonie Johnson wrote characters that were both funny and flirty. I enjoyed this story. This is the second book in The Sometimes In Love series. I can wait to see what happens next.
I received a copy of this book which I voluntarily read and reviewed. My comments are my honest opinion.
I'm bummed to say me and this author's style did not mesh. I did not finish Getting Hot with the Scot and don't have an inclination to try the rest of the series.
I thoroughly enjoyed this fairytale romance that started, stopped and stuttered it's way into my heart. The characters were so believable and the circumstances were tragic and sometimes funny. Very emotional read with lots of references to Austen and Shakespeare. I'm looking for more to read by Melonie Johnson!
After reading Getting Hot with the Scot I really wanted Theo's story. Johnson did not disappoint. Theo and his charm and politeness was a major plus to the story. Bonnie was very likable and handled the changes in her life realistically. I liked how he let her take charge and giving her space to make her own decisions. Out of the two books so far Theo and Bonnie are my favorite.
Great read from a first time author
I received a copy from Netgalley and I am voluntarily leaving my own honest opinion
Received an ARC from NetGalley for an honest review.
Yay! I'm so glad we got Theo and Bonnie's story right away and Melonie didn't make us wait! The attraction between these two was evident in Cassie and Logan's story and when a newly single Bonnie takes up a summer teaching job not far from Theo's home in England, it's only a matter of time before they get together.
This was interesting because neither one of them was really all that interested in being in a relationship. Theo was honor-bound by his Dukedom to marry well and Bonnie has a bad taste for relationships after her break up. This read more like a slow boil than Cassie's story, and I was okay with that. We really got to see these two - we saw their relationship start somewhat platonically (but not really) and move into the heat that makes reading fun.
Well done...my one question is who the next girl will be since we didn't get a set up like we did with this one...Hmmmm...
4 stars
Smitten by the Brit by Melonie Johnson is a sweet, fun and entertaining read.
The storyline is well written, it held my interest and I loved the friendship and bond the girls had.
I also enjoyed watching Bonnie and Theo's relations unfold. They made me smile, laugh and swoon, they totally belong together and I was happy they were able to find their happily ever after.
Overall, Smitten by the Brit is a lovely start to the A Sometimes in Love series and I'm looking forward to reading more.
*Thank you to the publisher via Netgalley for the advance copy.*
This was a fun, heartwarming, emotional and engaging romantic journey filled with lots of witty banter, funny moments and undeniable passion.... a truly entertaining read from beginning to end that was impossible to put down. Loved the intriguing charters and sweetly thrilling twists. Fabulous reading!
Theo and Bonnie are simply meant to be. Yet the road to get them together is cobbled and spans an ocean. This is a fun, witty romantic read that gives you more of the girls and Cassie's wedding as a bonus.
This charming story has all the ingredients of a lighthearted romantic comedy and draws you in from the beginning. This is a wonderfully warm, witty and sparkling story with a colorful cast of characters that you can fall in love with. It was great to join all the familiar characters from the Sometimes in Love series again and follow them while preparing themselves to take part in the wedding celebrations of Cassie and Logan.
This is a story about two people who have a lot in common but who are beleaguered by the doubts engendered by modern society and family obligations.
Bonnie has been trying very hard to forget Theo, but he embodies every Austen hero she has ever crushed on and she can’t stop thinking about her fairytale prince come to life. She is offered a new chance to go back to England to teach Shakespeare summer classes at Cambridge.
Theo has obligations and duties to fulfill. His family’s sprawling estate is on the verge of bankruptcy and his mother is determined to marry him to an heiress. In his family, marriage is a mere business arrangement.
I enjoyed reading about Theo and Bonnie’s personal doubts, struggles and how they decided to move on with their lives. I liked seeing Bonnie give up some of her control and just operate on her emotions. She had a way of putting Theo at ease. They perfectly complemented each other. Bonnie and Theo's development was perfect, as their relationship began to grow. It made the story more relatable and real.
All in all, I had a great time with this cute romance.
I like this a little bit better than the first book. It is well-written with many elements that make a successful romance. Sympathetic main characters achieve personal growth by the end of the book. Fascinating secondary characters spark interest in reading future stories about them. Scenic locations make one want to travel there. Story flows easily using language that seem appropriate for the characters.
But, the same things I enjoyed are the same things that caused me to downgrade my rating. All the familiar elements mean there's not much that is original here. The cause of the break-up with the long-time fiancé - predictable. The financially-challenged duke having to marry an heiress to save his family from ruin - read thousands of them. Tabitha, Theo's sister, one of the fascinating secondary characters nearly took over the book. I like her better than Bonnie or Theo. Their HFN didn't happen because of their love for one another. Tabitha was the one who made sure they get together. Finally, the scene I like the most is the popsicle blow-job tutorial, which featured the five friends. For a romance novel, it should be something that happened between the hero and heroine. Sadly, nothing Bonnie and Theo did together stood out. They didn't even say I love you to each other.
I received the next book in the series. I'll still read and review it. I'll probably complain again about it being so white. No PoC sighting in this book, either. Maybe that South Side witch is one. Maybe.
They met last summer. She was not free, and he was duty-bound not to follow his heart. But they met again, and the attraction cannot be denied. For Bonnie Blythe and Theo Wharton, it was a balancing act between love and duty.
Bonnie’s ex-fiancé broke her heart. So, when an opportunity to teach in England arrived, she accepted. Meeting Theo again was a given. She does not want him to be her rebound guy. Yet, deep down, she knew that what she felt for him was stronger.
Theo was the Duke of Eberton and duty-bound to keep the estate going not only for his family, but also for the people who for generations had depended on the duchy. He needed to marry an heiress to fill the family coffers. Yet, Bonnie was who his heart desired.
If you love Regency romances, “Smitten by the Brit” is its 21st century equivalent. The “haute ton” might no longer exist but duty still does. Following the story of Bonnie and Theo gives a surprising solution for the love and duty dilemma.
“Smitten by the Brit” is a fun read with some British dry wit humor. You will find Theo and his family fascinating. And most of all, you will fall in love with Theo and Bonnie who against all odds find their way to their happily ever after.
“Smitten by the Brit” is Rated T for Teens.
Really enjoyed this rom com that pulled at my heartstrings. Look forward to reading more from this author
I absolutely loved this story! It was a solid second book for this series. I have especially enjoyed expanding my knowledge about the rest of the fabulous group of friends. Getting to know Theo was a delight. and Bonnie, with her endearing quirks, was also a pleasure to get to know. Relatable characters and a story full of heart. Can't go wrong here!
This book stands alone, but you'll want to read the first one to know the characters and their history.
This is a fun romance between an American girl and an English Duke. You'll be hoping he's not a rebound, but perhaps she just came to her senses. The antics of his family are entertaining making for a delightful read.
I recently discovered Ms Johnson with Hot for the Scot and was pleasantly surprised to discover her follow up novel was almost as fun as her debut.
Smitten with the Brit is sequential in its timeline to Hot for the Scot, so there are potential spoilers in this stand alone effort. But, Ms Johnson has done an excellent job of making this book independent (so don’t worry if you are just now finding her).
Bonnie and Theo are both interesting and entertaining characters. Bonnie’s emotional journey was a key part of the story. My biggest complaint was I would have liked to see a little more of the same from Theo. We watched him struggle a bit, but we never really go to see him resolve his issues. It almost seemed as if the author reached a certain point and went "okay, we have to wrap this up now."
The secondary cast plays a big role in the story, especially Bonnie’s group of friends whom we first met in book one. I am curious to see where the author goes next and what is in store for the friends next.
I truly enjoyed this book, possibly because Bonnie could be me. Well, not the Shakespeare stuff, but definitely the Austen quotes, books, writing journals, tea, England, Scotland and I wish - a sexy Brit or Scot. Melonie's writing made me feel like I was right there with them in the story. I loved Theo so much, except he was an idiot for a good portion of the book which I know was necessary, but the author really drug that out to the point I wasn't sure if there was HEA or not. This story made me wonder if marriages of convenience are still practiced in England with the aristocracy, they probably are, but I felt like Theo's Snooty Dame mother was stuck in the 19th century. Anyway, if you like any of things I listed above, then you'll love this book. So pick it up and read it.
They met a year ago, when Bonnie and her friends were touring Europe, and neither had forgotten the encounter. Fast forward, and things were finally lining up for Bonnie and Theo. Bonnie had ended her engagement, and was taking a summer teaching position at Cambridge putting her in close proximity to Theo. It seemed the universe was doing its part to get these two together, but would they be able to overcome their personal obstacles?
I was itching for these two to get together since they first shared the page in Getting Hot with the Scot. I instantly loved them, and the ease they enjoyed with one another plus the banter between them, was indication enough that they belonged with one another. Johnson gave them some major obstacles to tackle in this story, but I never stopped rooting for them.
Bonnie was nursing a broken heart. She had been betrayed by someone she thought would be her forever, and Theo had to work hard and be patient with her, as she processed her emotions regarding that failed relationship. She had also been with her ex since she was eight years old, and the trepidation and fear she had about exploring something with a new man was understandable, and yet another keeping them apart.
Then we had Theo, who was faced with Austen level drama. He was a duke in need of a large influx of cash to save his ancestral home. This was one of the more stressful plots for me, because though I understood why, I just couldn't understand Theo being deprived his shot at true love. I was repeatedly angry with his mother, even though I knew all would be well in the end.
Both Theo and Bonnie had been putting their wants and needs on hold for the sake of others. Bonnie let her dreams go to the wayside, because she was busy supporting her ex-finacee's academic pursuits. While Theo was being forced to choose between marriage for love and marriage for obligation. It was so satisfying to see them start to make choices that were for themselves.
Once again, Johnson peppered the story with many fun and wonderful things. Among the things I loved:
• I am all about female friendships, and it was great being with all five of the Sometimes in Love women again. I got to know a bit more about the other three women, plus I got to catch up with Cassie.
• I loved Logan's family in the first book, so it was great to return to Scotland and spend a little time with them again, but I also adored Theo's sister, Tabby. She was fun and fabulous and one of the few, who wanted to see Theo find his happy.
• Theo took Bonnie on the most wonderful dates. They were all so fun and different. Each one had me looking forward to the next.
• Johnson did such a good job incorporating Bonnie's love of literature into the story. The quotes and references were all so well placed, and only added to my enjoyment.
This book had great characters, a hero and heroine I loved rooting for, spectacular scenery, humor, heat, and just the right amount of drama for my liking. Once again, Johnson delivered a fun and fabulous romance, that had me laughing, swooning, and smiling.
Thank you @smpromance for the free ARC in exchange for an honest review!! So, there were parts of this book I really loved. I thought Theo was a dreamboat modern day duke and I loved his manners and his wild side and how much he cared for Bonnie. The two had really great chemistry.
But there were also quite a few issues I had with the book. Now, full disclaimer, I read an uncorrected ARC, so some of these issues could be do to that. I just felt the book needed some tightening up in the way it was written. Bonnie is a diehard Shakespeare and Jane Austen fan, which I love, but soooo many of the references and allusions were really heavy handed and kind of jerked me out of the story. I also felt way too much of the story was Bonnie and Theo doing there own thing and not about their journey together. Don’t, get me wrong, I love an individualized character arc, but I also read romance to watch how those individual character arcs were together and grow together for that HEA. Now, I’m going to be fully honest, I got kind of bored and skipped from 52% to about 80% and I wasn’t confused at all. It took a really long time for them to get together (she’s based in Chicago but teaching classes at Cambridge) and so much of it was her just getting to freaking England.
I’m gonna give this one a 🍆🍆🍆/5
It wasn’t for me but I certainly do see why people would love it!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Available May 28th, Smitten By The Brit is book two in the Sometimes In Love series. Melonie Johnson is hitting it out of the park with her debut contemporary romances. I've started with book two and now I must, must, read book one, Getting Hot With The Scot. I'm invested in these characters, I like them.
Bonnie Blythe is our heroine, who actually saves herself. She's smart, well educated, and not embarrassing in public even thought she has a quirky fashion sense. She's a real woman with real problems: cheating fiancée, stale job, iffy finances, great friends and a life stuck in a rut (how did that happen?) She's been with one guy, the cheater, and is inexperienced in the dating/sex world of the 21st century. She's up for an adventure in London, welcome to 2019.
Theo Warton, 16th Duke of Emberton, is a seriously hot guy, he has dimples!! He and Bonnie met last summer (Book 1) and the sparks were about to start a forest fire. He wants to be with Bonnie but has been raised to do his duty to the family. Poor guy is in an emotional pickle. Our couple hook up again when Bonnie takes a summer teaching job in London. The sexy forest fire threatens to burn down the dukedom. Theo is so British that he said thank you after having sex!?! I loved all his gentlemanly ways, it speaks to my romantic soul.
I truly enjoyed the book but even better, I liked the characters and rooted for them to get their happily ever after. I'm off to read book one, will there be a book three? Happy reading.
