Catherine Coulter creates a well developed story with incredible detail in The Last Second. This isn't typically my favorite genre, but the plot really called to me and sucked me in from start to finish.
The Last Second by Catherine Coulter and J.T. Ellison is another roller roaster ride of excitement, thrills, mystery, laughs, and a storyline that kept me on my toes. I love A Brit in the FBI series, not to mention between you and me, I would buy every one of these books written by Catherine Coulter and J.T. Ellison.
For some readers, the plot may be not be 100% believable, but it is written with engaging, growing characters, unique plot, in depth research, and storyline. I love novels that push the boundaries of the normal plot narrative, ones that make me think, ones that make it believable and make me question what truly is going on around me.
Thank you Catherine Coulter and J.T. Ellison for collaborating together and coming up with this fantastic A Brit in the FBI series.
Young and brilliant Neveah Patel used to be an astronaut—until, during a space- walk, she encountered aliens, the Numen. However, with no evidence of such, no one believed her, calling this a delusional event brought on by her becoming untethered from the International Space Station. Now, Neveah heads up Galactus, France’s answer to SpaceX, and has a devious plan in mind. She has faked the launch of a satellite and used the event to make, what the world believes is a satellite that never made it into orbit, her own satellite, which will turn on EMP and destroy the world as we know it, so the Numen can finally reach their destiny, while becoming immortal, alongside them, herself. Once she has destroyed the owner of Galactus and his treasure-seeking ship, Neveah steals what Galictus’s owner has found during his search for a long-lost ship, what everyone believes is the Holy Grail. Things go according to plan until Special Agents Nicholas Drummond and Michaela Caine enter the story, with the mission of stopping this EMP event, which will destroy communication and electronic systems on Earth, resulting in chaos and anarchy.
I have read all of Catherine Coulter’s series with FBI team Dillon Savich and his wife Lacey Sherlock and thoroughly enjoyed them, but this is the first one I have read in this series. I was very interested to get into it, since I have so enjoyed the other books. However, after reading this one, I am not sure how many others in this series I will read. The story was just too “woo-woo” for me. I did think the technical/scientific aspects of the story were well-done and appeared to have been well-researched. The plot moved along quickly and became a real action-thriller, but things moved so quickly that there was little time to build up suspense for me. Some of the characters, in particular security guard head Grant, also a pal of Nicholas Drummond and Michaela Caine, managed to overcome unbelievable events designed to stop him and anyone else, which seemed a bit too far-fetched for me. The series characters, as usual, were well-done and proved they were up to the job. I just could never get into this book, because I felt it was a bit too far out for me. I received this from NetGalley to read and review.
Great Read! Another fine addition to the Brit in the FBI series. Love seeing the characters of Mike and Nicholas keep developing as the series continues. Good Job Coulter and Ellison, keep the stories coming.
I am a huge fan of Catherine Coulter and I have read all of the books in this series. JT Ellison and Coulter push the limits with this one but it is still a delightful read! Thank you netgalley for this arc in exchange for my honest opinion.
4.5 stars. Wow! I loved this book and it is an action packed thrill ride from the start. This is the first book I have read in this series so I did play a little catch up as to who these characters are, but I didn’t feel lost on the overall plot line of this adventure and I definitely want to go back and read the previous books.
Nevaeh Patel works for a firm that launches satellites into space. She’s a former astronaut for NASA who was permanently grounded after an incident on the space station convinced her there are aliens called the Numen who are coming to Earth. No one believes her and she uses her job to launch a nuclear EMP into space aboard a satellite to help the aliens come. Are they real or is she crazy. Mike and Nicholas are in a race to stop this from occurring.
There’s so much more to this story, and some of the adventures are over the top, but it’s a story that engages you and keeps you enthralled until the end.
Thanks to the publisher for a review copy via NetGalley.
After she came back from space, Dr. Nevaeh Patel was changed. She had made contact. But no one believed her. Grounded by NASA, she's now working for a private firm helmed by Jean-Pierre Broussard and they're about to launch a satellite. But this satellite has a hidden time bomb on it, one that could take out large swathes of communications.
Jean-Pierre is distracted. He is more concerned with unearthing the shipwreck thought to contain the Holy Grail than tracking what his staff is doing. Too bad Nevaeh wants the Grail for her own purposes.
Nicholas Drummond and Michaela Caine are dragged back into the thick of things in the hopes that they can stop this mad scientist before she starts WWIII.
This was generally better than the last few Brit in the FBI stories. I think the action was fine but wish we had gotten a bit more growth in our characters.
Three stars

Opinions are my own
I enjoyed this one much better than the last one. The action was pretty much non-stop and the villains were top-notch. I enjoyed the facts at the beginning of the chapters, it helped tie into what the chapter would be about. I think the only thing I didn't really like was some of the corny dialogue, but I think that's going to happen in most books. All-in-all, their adventure in this story was much more believable compared to the previous adventure. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series!
As usual this was a good read from authors Coulter and Ellison. I think 'A Brit in the FBI' is one of the better series available today. The plot was very well written and there were some times that the action and suspense made my heart race. The characters were brought to life so that you could see them in your mind's eye. Even though I didn't like the villains I still had a vision of what they looked like and who they were. I received this ebook from NetGalley for an honest review.
THE LAST SECOND
Another fun and exciting adventure in the Brit in the FBI series (#6), Nicholas Drummond and Michaela Caine are up against a rogue astronaut fixated on quieting the earth's atmosphere in an attempt to communicate with the Neumen.
Nevaeh Patel is convinced that earlier in her career it was the alien life source the Neumen that saved her from a disastrous accident while working on the International Space Station. Now that she is the director of Galactus, a private enterprise that places satellites in space, she has the opportunity to launch a nuclear bomb and generate an EMP and further her interaction with the space beings.
Drummond and Caine work with Galactus' owner, the wealthy jet setter Jean-Pierre Broussard, in exotic settings off the coast of Malaysia and in Sri Lanka to stop the pending disaster.
I would like to thank NetGalley, authors Catherine Coulter and J. T. Ellison, and Gallery Books, Simon & Schuster, Inc. for the opportunity to read and review this book.
This is very different than Catherine Coulter's usual books, but it's Catherine Coulter. She could make reading a menu a thriller! The focus of the story is set in space. Again, very unusual for a Catherine Coulter book. But, in usual style, the characters are well written and their actions detailed to keep you reading. The jacket description draws you in, but the writing and the story...especially the ending...will keep readers satisfied.
Oh my word I loved this book!
From the earliest pages I was hooked. Are aliens real? Will we ever know?
I loved so much about this book, that it’s going to be tough to get it all out and not ruin the story for you.
This book was an adventure, and I’m terribly addicted. While I haven’t read any of the other books, I wasn’t terribly confused with the main characters (Nicholas and Michaela aka Mike) and their relationship. Not much from previous books was mentioned, that would cause confusion.
I had to stop reading for a while at 91% because I just wasn’t ready for the book to be over. Would the good guys win, or bad? Would my favorites live or die? I just wasn’t prepared to have those questions answered.
I LOVED the way the book ended too. I’m definitely itching for more. I hope there will be a follow up book, taking place in Canada!
Definitely recommend this read!
The Last Second by Catherine Coulter & J.T. Ellison another worthy novel from these 2 authors! This was more syfy then what these two usually write and it took a bit to get involved with this book but once I did it drew me into the story and kept me guessing. Great characters and great writing! Thank you Netgalley and the Publishers for allowing me to read this and leave my review.
Put your science fiction hat on, yes science fiction when you have a brilliant scientist believing in aliens from outer space, then take a step back to "everyday life" and follow another crazy adventure of Nicholas and Mike our FBI agents par excellance. Adventure and thrills just keeps following them around and oh the dangerous and chilling adventures they continue to have. When Mike and Nicholas find their friend Grant is missing, in his capacity of security for Galactus space agency owner Broussard sailing the seas to locate the Holy Grail, they are off to find him, they hope. In the meantime Broussard's partner, former astronaut Neveah Patel, is out to disrupt the world with an EMP loaded satellite to bring to earth her alien friends the Numen. Lots of scientific details enhance the story. Along with the thrills and suspense you have to love the delightful banter of two engaging characters.. When you put this sixth book in the Brit in the FBI series down you'll be impatient for Nicholas and Mike's next adventure.
Why not go for broke? In Catherine Coulter and J.T.Ellison’s The Last Second The Holy Grail aka Heaven’s Stone, aliens, and a errant satellite armed with a small nuclear bomb are the threads that make up this heart thumping new outing for FBI agents Michaela (Mike) Caine and Nicholas Drummond. The nuclear device is designed to emit an EMP-electromagnetic pulse designed to take out most of the earth’s electrical grid and as a side effect maybe cause a full out nuclear war.
Too bad this was all based on the fake news articles about certain astronauts passing lie detector tests concerning their seeing aliens. Note the term lie detector-not polygraph; important difference. I say too bad because in Coulter and Ellison’s last book in the Brit in the FBI series The Sixth Day I was delighted with all of the cool scientific and arcane information presented.
To catch up new readers and as a reminder to faithful readers-and yes I’m one-here is a quickie summary. In six months of book time Nicholas Drummond has gone from a Chief Inspector at Scotland Yard to being an FBI agent. He has made it through the academy (which actually lasts four months), partnered up with FBI agent Mike Caine, fallen in love with her, and saved the Queen, the Prime Minister, and the U.S. President. And I think the world a few times. He has been knighted and Mike has been made a Dame. The Knighthood might be a bit superfluous because eventually Drummond will become a Viscount. BTW, this is a rank of the Peerage, seldom of Royalty. But I apologize if Drummond is actually related to the Queen. In other words, they are typical FBI agents. Sorry, couldn’t resist.
As always the story is at breakneck speed with a short timeline. Coulter and Ellison’s are as slyly convincing about the first alien encounters as they are for the recovery of the Holy Grail from the ocean floor. The also do a great job in documenting the former astronaut’s journey from off the chart genius to evil genius.
The settings from a cliffside villa in Capri to the jungles of Malaysia are breathtaking. No surprise there.
The information about EMPs seems to be accurate and well presented. EMP weapons are possible and may exist. But then again lightening strikes are a form of EMP's.
Drummond totally treats Mike as an equal and never pulls the man card on her. Especially in highly dangerous situations. Without giving anything away, how she saves the world is funny.
I have a slight problem with the super bad girls being lesbians; I hope it’s not an editorial cliche/judgement making them the villains. Although no doubt there will be readers who are offended they even included a lesbian couple. I also have a problem with a secondary character sleeping with one of the baddies, kinda makes him a man-ho. I have another problem with Mile and Nicholas's superlative healing powers. But this just goes with their almost super human adventures.
If you are looking for a fun, action packed story, this will do very well.
Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Fast Paced and interesting. The plot continues to thicken and the characters keep trying to keep up. A Thrilling read.
“The Last Second” by Catherine Coulter and J T Ellison is book six in the “Brit in the FBI” series. Regular readers will enjoy this intricate plot as the future and the past intertwine, and new readers will be able to follow along because most needed information from the previous books is included as part of the narrative. The familiar cast of likeable characters is back including Michaela, Nicholas, Grant, and Kitsune. All continue with their amusing banter and at times, somewhat unusual behavior.
This book features an interesting plot twist that combines the “new” (pure science, advanced satellite technology, and innovative space weaponry) with “old” (The Holy Grail). There are plenty of exploits, deceit, treachery, and even a nuclear threat. All this makes for a book that is multifaceted, compelling, and hard to put down. The pace is intense, all happening over four action-packed days.
“The Last Second” is a well-written thriller with components of the past, the present, and the future. The complex, although somewhat improbable, plot grabs readers right from the start. I received a review copy of “The Last Second” from Catherine Coulter, J T Ellison, Gallery Books, and NetGalley. It is a compelling thriller that familiar readers will love, and one that will inspire new readers to look for the previous books. Of course, a few loose ends encourage readers to tune in when the next book is published
The Last Second (A Brit in the FBI #6) by Catherine Coulter and JT Ellison was a fun read. Once again Special Agents Nicholas Drummond and Michaela Caine are on the case to figure out a multinational murder mystery and theft. The murder was attempted and that the theft was that of plutonium was what made the story a thriller. Added to the mystery was where the missing plutonium was.
This is fun series of books. They always have a great thriller/mystery. The story is made to move along quickly - pulling the reader into the story with all the twists and turns. The characters are a part of the fun. Special Agents Nicholas Drummond and Michaela Caine are a great match with their mix of skills and ability to track down anything. I like how they mix the technology with the dogged determination of planning.
The Last Second by Catherine Coulter and JT Ellison did keep me on the edge until the last second. It was a fun read!
Agents Drummond and Caine are supposed to be on vacation. If you have read any of the other books in this series, “A Brit in the FBI” you will not be surprised to see them burst into action to track down the crazies who threaten the forces of good. Fast, action packed, a breathtaking roller coaster ride of a thriller.
The storyline gives attention to what has happened in space, a catastrophe at sea and the race to stop what may happen on earth. The baddies are scary bad but so crazy brilliant that you have to admire the depth of the research that made the scientific part of the story understandable. There is so much going on but it all hung together, kept my interest and I just didn’t want to put this book down.
Thank you Netgalley and Gallery, Threshold, Pocket Books for a copy.
NASA astronaut, Neveah Patel, has been grounded. While on a mission in space she had a near death experience when she became untethered from the International Space Station. During those harrowing moments she believes she was saved by an exo-planetary species - The NUMEN. However, when NASA reviewed the shuttle transmissions after the incident there was no evidence of anyone else, human or otherwise, besides Neveah and her team. NASA's belief is that she suffered a delusional event brought about by this traumatic event. Neveah feels that the head NASA psychiatrist has it in for her. She believes the determination is unjust and led by jealously rather than science.
She embarks on an endeavor to reunite with the Numen and bring peace to the world. But as time goes by Neveah becomes more delirious, more fraught, and more bitter as she feels slighted and betrayed by NASA. Quickly, she becomes bent on revenge. Her new aim - destroy the International Space Station and be granted immortality by the Numen. In order to achieve this goal she has to rid Earth from the "noise" created by our cellular devices and satellites. Her grand plan is to send a nuclear bomb up into space to set off an electromagnetic pulse that would effectively shut down the world's electrical grid. With the potential to bring about a world war Special Agents Nicholas Drummond and Michaela Caine do not have much time to recover the Holy Grail, capture Neveah and her psychopathic killing machine of a lover, defuse a nuclear bomb and save the world. As you can guess The Last Second takes place in break neck speed and is action packed.
I just had a bit of a time with this book and I am not sure why. This is my second Coulter book. I really liked the first one, Paradox, a lot which is why I requested this one. I think it is because I was in the middle of a reading slump. I've gone over a whole week without completing a book. Usually I read a book a day or two. So I am going to blame this one on me and my slump. For now this book will suffer a three star rating, but I will definitely return and read more from Catherine Coulter.
