Not very believable. I would not recommend this. It was an easy read though. The characters need work and there are many gaps in the story that just don't make sense.
Thanks to NetGalley for the chance to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
This book was well worth the read. It's simultaneously a legal thriller, a rom-com, and a story about a guy from the Midwest who gets in over his head in New York. The beginning was a little slow; it takes a while to really warm up to Will Matthews, but once you do, the story is great. Gwen, Will's girlfriend and New York lawyer, is my favorite character by far. The story is full of twists and turns and keeps you engaged until the end.
hanks to Adam Mitzner, Thomas & Mercer, and Netgalley for providing me with a digital advance copy of this novel.
A Matter of Will is a fast-paced thriller set among the most exclusive investment banks and law firms of New York City. Young and naïve Will Matthews, on the cusp of losing his job as a trainee at an investment firm, is approached by a mysterious man who offers him millions in investments and sets him on the fast track to a life of wealth and privilege. But of course, everything is not as it seems.
This novel is a quick read and it captured my interest immediately. Unfortunately, it didn't last -- this book did not work for me. I won’t go into specifics so as not to spoil any plot twists, but suffice it to say that none of it was plausible to me in any way – not the financial aspects of the book nor the legal-related aspects. No one in this book seemed to make smart decisions or act reasonably, ever. I just didn’t find it believable – even less so as the book progressed. Disappointing, as it was an intriguing premise. Also, small point, but the use of the names of real people (“David Bloom” and “John Yoo”) as characters other than themselves was distracting.
A Matter of Will was a fun ride that I would highly recommend. It's the story of a young Wall Street broker, the titular Will, a mysterious and hugely wealthy couple, Eve and Sam, and Will's girlfriend Gwen, a young lawyer. One night at a NY Rangers game, Will meets Eve and Sam. Days later Sam brings Will into his heady world and invests heavily with him, a life changer for Will. Concurrently, Will meets Gwen through a dating app, and they quickly fall in love. Although the story is primarily about Will, Eve, and Sam, there is also a side plot involving Gwen who is participating in a huge murder trial. Everything is sunshine and unicorns for Will and Gwen until the day he witnesses a murder.
The novel reminded me of movies like The Devil's Advocate and The Firm where young up-and-comers learn the hard way that if it seems too good to be true, run! The reader knows pretty much how things are going to go for young Will, but that in no way detracts from the joy of reading A Matter of Will. Adam Mitzner did a terrific job weaving a tight story and well-developed characters. Satisfying ending too.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing an advance copy in return for an honest review.
Adam Mitzner captivates his reader with this page turner. An easy, fun read. Don’t focus on certain nuances that I did, that I thought needed clarification, but just enjoy the ride. They are incidental.
A Matter of Will by Adam Mitzner, a thoroughly enjoyable book! Will works for a big investment company and is eager for advancement, so when a couple approach him at a hockey game about working with him and it becomes obvious they have deep pockets he is hooked, but is all above board with them? If you enjoy mystery, suspense and romance this book is for you.
Adam Mitzner always delivers a great read. A Matter of Will is no exception. It's an engaging story with twists and turns. Sort of like a fairy godmother gone wrong. The characters are strong and likeable. Overall a good read.
A small town guy named Will is trying to break into the banking world and is seemingly days away from being fired and sent back to his old life when at a hockey game he has a fortuitous meeting with a shadowy new investor. His life changes dramatically after meeting Sam and here is where the fun begins. Will's life keeps changing for the better but anyone who even questions his new found power ends up in bad shape. A good read by a good author.
Thank you Adam Mitzner, Thomas & Mercer and Netgalley for the ARC for my review.
I have to say Adam Mitzner has become one of my favorite authors. He can write, and his plots are twisty and divine.
This book tells the story of a broker trainee Will, who meets a mysterious couple who seem to be able to grant Will's wildest wish: to be a success on Wall Street.
With the woman of his dreams by his side (a young lawyer named Gwen) it seems like Will is ready to take New York by storm, but quickly things turn out not to be quite as great as they seem.
Everything I have read by Mitzner has been amazing. I enjoy his detail, realistic dialogue, and interesting plots. In addition, he is a rare male author that does not diminish his female characters. And, even though many of his plots are wildly unrealistic, he writes so well, as a reader you will be there every step of the way.
With all the legal thrillers bandied about, Mitzner definitely stands above. You will not be sorry with any of his books.
Thanks to the publisher, author, and NetGalley.com for my advance copy.
This pedestrian mystery involves two nice, well-meaning young professionals whose dreams come true until the bills for success in their chosen fields, finance and law come due, too. Will, the native young broker, signs a mysterious man he meets at a hockey game as a client, and suddenly his numbers, mprove dramatically. It seems too good to be true, but Will's highly respected firm accepts his new client's million- if Sam Abadon' s money is good enough for them, he puts his misgivings away and enjoys his own new found wealth. And when he meets Gwen, as career-driven as he is, his life is complete. For a few cliche-ridden chapters, they find that there's more to life than their jobs. Andthat's about it until the predictable castle in the sand collapses (this reader can't help it, the book brings out the cliches in her, too), they both find out they've been had, especially Will. But Gwen saves him from ruiin with her own lately skills and they all live happily after.
I am still astonished by how Mr Mitzner characters grabbed me for an intriguing and extremely surprising ride.
I would have appreciated some more depth in parts of this provocative story, but this is compensated so well by the character's depth that I do not mind. This book will absorb your attention and you won't let it go till the end.
Will,Sam,Eve and Gwen will become unforgettable in their interactions....This book is a 4 on 5 on dialogue and depth of story BUT it is a 7 on 5 in character development,so it deserves to be enjoyed with awe.
Probably one of the best books you will read in 2019.
Another title from Mitzner that doesn't disappoint. For those who've enjoyed his other books, I don't think they'll be disappointed here, and if someone hasn't read his books before, this is a good one to start with.
I was given this book by Net Galley for an honest review. I enjoyed this book. A small-town guy, Will, is in New York trying to break into the investment world. He is getting ready to be fired for not meeting his quota when he meets a man named Sam who invests many millions with him. He is now flying high in the business. But not everything is as it seems. He meets a Gwen who is a lawyer with a top firm.
Will finds himself in the mist of wrongdoing and murder. Gwen finds herself defending a guilty man. Will has to find a way to get out from under the very bad people he has involved himself with.
The writing is wonderful. I have read several of Adan Mitzner's books and they never disappoint. There is a lot of action, the ordinary guy and gal trying to survive in a high stake world. I highly recommend this book
The e-copy of “A Matter Will” an “uncorrected proof” Therefore, in this first chapter when Will Mathews, the main character mentions he is from Cheboygan, Michigan I laughed out loud and said to myself, “Well there is blooper.” The name of the town is Sheboygan and it is located in Wisconsin in Lake Michigan. As I have friends who live in Milwaukee and Green Bay, I thought I’d put a note on Facebook about this error. But, first I checked Google and to my surprise there is a Cheboygan, Michigan! A few chapters later, Mitzner adds a note about Sheboygan, WI. I guess the joke is on me.
Will is working in a New York City wealth management firm, trying without much success to sign-up new clients when he meets Sam Abaddon who appears to be a very wealthy man who is willing to let Will manage several million dollars. Will’s girlfriend, Gwen Lipton, works for a big law firm and is assigned to assist with the defense of man accused of murdering his wife.. Both Will and Gwen are thrilled with what appears to be wonderful changes in their lives. But, things don’t work out like the pair anticipate.
Mitzner has written a faced paced book, with interesting characters, and a vivid sense of place. But, the ending fails. While reading the end of the book I once again laughed out loud, which I’m sure is not the result that Mitzner is seeking. It is unfortunate that an unbelievable ending spoils what otherwise is an entertaining crime novel.
This is a very different kind of story- actual it is 2 stories about money and how is can make people make terrible choices to go from surviving to thriving and back to trying to survive. The characters are likable even if they are stupid. There are a lot of surprises but after I got into the story i could not put it down.. the author did a great job of tying up a lot of loose ends to a surprising ending.
Reading the first half of this book made me envision the movie "Wall Street," as the story line is very similar in so many ways. Later in the book, the plot takes a turn, making it a little more interesting. I've read several of Mitzner's books and this, unfortunately, is not his best work. The legal aspects seem summarized, rather than more detailed as in past novels. And the main character, Will, seems incredibly naive. So, I'm not rating this as highly as I'd like to have hoped, given past novels from the same author.
Adam Mitzner gets better with each book.
I really enjoy the way the main charecters are fleshed out in this book. Looking at it, from Will Matthews’ viewpoint, you can definitely see why he made the choices he made. The book also tries to flesh out Gwen, and this one isn’t done as well but at least you understand her motivations.
I really enjoyed this book and it kept me interested along it’s two storylines
Thanks to NetGalley for an ARC of this book.
Only reason I'm not giving it five stars is I'm still somewhat perplexed by the last part of the book. But overall, definitely a winner
Typically, I'm not drawn to novels covering the law or legal battles, but the synopsis of this book made me curious. Glad I took a chance on this one! One honest, young and struggling lawyer joins a firm whose activities suddenly become clouded by suspicion, and the young lawyer eventually becomes aware of the massively compromised dealings of the senior staff with whom he's now teamed. The choices he makes will obviously have a huge impact on his legal career, so he must carefully analyze his various courses of action. Intelligent, well-written glimpse into labyrinthine law.
A fast paced novel, with a clever mystery at its core! I've read a number of books by this author before and A matter of Will did not disappoint.
