I wasn't sure what to expect, this is a new to me author, and let me start by telling you two things: There are never any spoilers in my reviews, and I was pleasantly surprised. Plenty of twists and turns in this well-written mystery that was a bid on the dark side. How can going to sleep in a Narcosis Clinic cure your unwanted past? What will the consequences be, because you know as well as I do, everything comes at a price! Great story, wonderful characters keep you flipping the pages until you either just need to put it down to do something else, or need to get to the next chapter. Either way, a worthwhile read, that even though it is considered a YA novel, I enjoyed immensely and think you might too! I will soon be looking for other books to read by this author.

This was my first book by the author and one I thoroughly enjoyed. It was right up my alley with the themes of science and vanity and just how far we will go for that. The characters were realistic and drew you into the story. Ellie's family runs the facility that you can go to sleep and have all your problems go away. Any psychological issues can be fixed and even physical features and issues, all while you sleep. Ellie is all in until she realizes this is affecting her and things spiral out of control from there. It's hard to talk to much without giving away the plot but know that it takes on some moral themes with suspense thrown in and is well worth your time.

This was a very interesting book. The book is told from 3 different perspectives. Ellie, whose parents run Nacosis and has memory issues due to a traumatic incident. Dean a famous singer with a lisp. Lastly, Cole the boy that has known Ellie for years. While we do see all 3 perspectives, we get the most from Ellie especially towards the end of the book.

The premise of this book has Ellie undergoing a treatment at the Nacosis treatment center. Her parents are going to put her to sleep for three months in order to gain some memories and to try and stop the amnesia she has been dealing with due to her past trauma. There is a lot of mystery regarding what happened to Ellie and I couldn't wait to find out more about what happened to her.

The mystery in this book was fantastic and it kept me guessing. Overall, I liked the book. Dean and Cole were good characters, but I almost would have preferred it to have been only from Ellie's point of view. Some of their perspective I found to be unnecessary. However, I can see why they were included in the book. This book was suspenseful, unique, and kept me interested from the beginning.

I voluntarily read and reviewed a copy of this book from Owl Hollow Press via Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Louise Cypress has done it again! I adore her books, both under Louise and under Jennifer. She does an amazing job as a writer bringing the characters to life.

Wouldn't it be nice to go to sleep and wake up knowing a new language? What if you could go to sleep and have childhood traumas erased from your mind? What if you could go to sleep and wake up beautiful? Who wouldn't want this?

What happens when a life is changed by Narcosis? Ellie's parents run a Narcosis Clinic and Ellie has had treatments there. When she finds out that she is missing memories, Ellie tries to find out what was erased and finds out a terrible truth.

Narcosis Room is a YA novel and I recommend it to YA readers who like sci-fi.

I love the writing style of the author. She never disappoints. Loved Narcosis Room from start to finish. Every time I thought I knew something it changes...felt like Ellie!! Never saw the amazing ending coming!!!

I have read all of Louise Cypress' books so far and they have all been wonderful. I love a good mystery/suspense book and this definitely fits in those categories. It is alternate POV in case that is something you're not into. But I highly encourage anyone to pick this up.

[Excerpt]:

I’ve read Louise Cypress’s other series, The Puritan Coven, which consists of 3 books centered around teens in a California town who either are vampires or have some association with the vampire world. Book 1 was pretty decent, although the ending was hella rushed. Book 2 was a tragic MESS, and I almost quit reading several times.

“Narcosis Room” wasn’t terrible, but neither was it what I consider a “good” read by any means. The characters were annoying, if not downright unlikeable. The plot was very thin. The lovey-doveyness between some of the characters was really fake and honestly not well-developed. Half the time I was bored. The other half I wondered why X was so stupid and Y was so oblivious to the events unfolding around them. This book wasn’t for me.

Let’s start with the characters’ personalities. Marley was little more than an annoyance. She was, frankly, more of a “mean girl” than a friend to the MC, so I thought it odd that everything worked out for her. Cole was in no way a good love interest. At one point he sneers at Ellie and mocks her about her water phobia. Great boyfriend material, yeah? Liam’s presence was pointless, as was – to be honest – Dean Mathews’. In fact, I had no idea and was disappointed when I started the book and realized that the novel would not be told strictly from Ellie’s POV, as the synopsis had lead me to believe. The novel is told from Ellie, Cole, and Dean’s POVs. Even now I have no idea why Dean was in the book at all.

Not my usual cup of tea, but this worked for me, after a bit of what I thought was a slow start. I'm intrigued, and will be looking for book two!

So "Narcosis Room" is a standalone Young-Adult: Mystery and suspense novel.
My first experience with this particular author and one that for the most part was a positive one.
This was a clean YA read told from multiple POV's: Mostly Ellie but also some from Dean and Cole too.
I found this such an interesting concept and idea especially considering though fiction this had some loose base in factual reality.
The idea that you can sleep away treatments and trauma while someone basically fixes and reprograms your brain and body almost like an unconscious miracle cure that doesn't impact harshly on the patients overall well being and state of mind: well It really does sound too good to be true, doesn't it?
This also poses ethical questions and the dilemma between how far do you go to get that perfect physique and lifestyle.
When all you need to do is go to sleep for a time and awake fluent in French or an expert on literature the self-serving possibilities with this sort of treatment are endless.
Then on the other end of the spectrum to be able to sleep threw invasive painful surgery.
For Ellie's experience with Narcosis, this was almost a "Total Recall" meets that old Katie Holmes film from the nineties "Disturbing Behaviour" where her parents are also striving for some unreal idea of perfection in their daughter.
I also thought that Ellie's mums own personal life experiences had definitely impacted her decision making and choices in the negative in regards to dealing with her daughter's behaviour.
So Ellie in the second half of this seemed to understandably do a complete turnaround in her behaviour and general attitude: though I could one hundred percent see why this was it still didn't stop me wanting to give her a big kick up the backside and tell her to pull up her big girl pants and just deal already.
So it becomes obvious that Ellie's parents are keeping big secrets from her and as Ellie and her friends begin to delve deeper this did a 160 on me and changed directions again.
This goes so much deeper than what's visible on the surface and even though I did find certain aspects of the finale here a trifle farfetched and improbable I still very much enjoyed myself here.
Narcosis Room was such an imaginative endeavour and a really easy read.
I voluntary reviewed a copy of Narcosis Room.
All opinions expressed are entirely my own.

At first it is a bit confusing with meeting all the characters. The titles of the chapters did help and sometimes I had to look back to see who I was reading about but that could be due to my cold/concentration level at the time. The story itself was really good and I really couldn't tell who the bad guys were for sure or if there really were any until later in the book. Ending was a cliffhanger for the next victim or one of those endings you find in Stephen King or a movie that leaves you mouth hanging when it ends.

I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review of its mA fun YA romp, which seemed a bit far-fetched at the until you read the research notes. I thought the story would have been better as a near-future tale, but that more a personal preference. Also, the main characters are a bit tame in their language for teenagers (particularly amorous ones), but I'm a high school teacher, so I hear and see more than others might.

The writing in this book was well thought out and made for an easy, intriguing read. The first few pages were a little slow, but after you get through that, all the fun begins. Ellie’s parents seem so concerned and nice but the truth is they are hiding a terrible secret from their daughter about what they’ve done.

This was an engaging YA novel with sci-fi elements. Ellie is a normal high school girl whose parents are famous for inventing Narcosis treatment. As Ellie attempts to find the missing pieces of her memory she begins to uncover a horrifying truth about herself.
I liked that the author split the story with multiple points of view. It presented the story from different angles. The only thing I wasn't crazy about is Ellies relationship with her parents. Yes I understand she is the rebellious teenager but her parents rationale for what was done to her seemed cruel and out of place with their characters. All in all, it was a decent Ya.

This! This is what YA fiction should be! It's all the things that we know and love about YA fiction, and has many of the tropes of the genre - but it's so finely crafted that it's a real joy to read, and a book that I would recommend to all readers.
Adults will get something a little more from the novel, an extra layer of nuance that goes beyond the teen drama of the obvious plot, and I certainly picked up on the true monsterous characters of some of the books people - where one could argue they came across as synthetic and flat, 2d, I would argue that yes, yes they do, and doesn't that just make it MORE scary?! They're like robots! (no spoilers, but seriously, I loved this book)
Cracking YA fiction, a thoroughly enjoyable semi Sci fi romp. Read it for a fun afternoon!

Narcosis Book Review

I absolutely loved this YA novel. The plot was original and unique, the characters well developed, and the writing was flawless.

We have three points of view in this book: Ellie (the main character), Dean (a famous pop star), and Cole (the boy Ellie fancies). Even though there are three points of view, this is not a love triangle. Ellie’s parents are the famous Savage Doctors who run the Narcosis Clinic where patients can come and go to sleep for three months to have their dreams realised. Ellie’s father is a dermatologist and her mother is a surgeon and psychotherapist working on reprogramming the brain. Ellie has undergone Narcosis to help regain her memories. She’s suffering from retrograde amnesia which her parents believe was caused by something that happened to her in boarding school.

Now if you’ve read the blurb for this book, you’ll already know that Ellie’s parents and Narcosis is not all that it seems and as the story unfolds and snippets of information are revealed, the whole thing takes a turn that you won’t see coming.

Ellie can’t remember anything in her life before ninth grade and her old friends Cole and his twin sister Marley can’t figure her out. They know she changed after she went to private school but they don’t know why. Cole has fancied Ellie since kindergarten but she has no memories of ever being friends with him or Marley.

Ellie is set to undergo Narcosis for the three months of the summer but before she does she attends Dean’s concert and this is where things start to change. I have to admit, I was hooked on this book from the very first page and couldn’t wait to find out what really happened to Ellie and why she lost her memories, and what her parents had been doing to her.

There are so many great elements to this book and each character point of view enhances the story. When Ellie wakes up after the latest round of Narcosis there are some big changes and she realizes things are not as they seem. This leads her to seek out answers and what happens next is something I wasn’t expecting. I devoured the second half of this book in one sitting because I had to see what was going to happen next.

I predict that this book is going to be a massive hit in the YA market in 2019 and I can’t wait to read more for this author. Her prose is wonderful and I found myself becoming the character of Ellie as I read. In fact, I think I’m going to miss Ellie, Cole, Marley and Dean. A definite 5 star read and one I highly recommend to anyone looking for a unique plot and storyline with great twists and turns.
