Easy, fast paced read that can be read as a standalone. Domestic noir with a combination of police procedural. Decent story, just not a very memorable book for me.
Thanks to netgalley for the review copy of this thrilling read. The book was well written, gripping from the end, and the reader can't wait to see who is the killer at the end. Recommended.
A dark twisty thriller a family saga that drew me in.This is multilayered characters come alive a book that drew me in and I couldn’t put down.#netgalley #bookouture
Oh my goodness - found this gem in my archives - as at the time of requesting there seemed to be many other books that grabbed my attention! Big mistake! Having read the 3 titles in this series, Ana Lou Weatherly is my new favourite author!
Poor Laurie finds her husband brutally murdered and she is the prime suspect - all though we know for absolute certain it couldn’t have been her, or could it? The back story was exceptional, the truth about “ lovely”Robert was shocking, and more shocking with each revelation! I guessed what was going on earlier than the big reveal, but it didn’t spoil it for me! Could not put it down!!
This is an average family saga that was ok. I didn't feel that it was particularly memorable or remarkable.
A thrilling read which kept me turning the pages, characters you care for and just brilliantly written. Great novel!!
Couldn't put this one down! The combination of psychological abuse and a psychopathic nature made for a riveting read. It's part police procedural and past mystery/thriller. I was a little disappointed by the reveal as I had suspicions about that person and where Kiki tied in and I was expecting a bit more of a twist. Enjoyed the police character of Dan Riley.
I really enjoyed this book. It was a great psychological thriller that I couldn't put down. It was deep and dark and twisty.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for this ARC in return for an honest review.
Laurie has had a hard time of it lately. The latest to happen in her crumbling life is finding out her husband is having an affair. The devastation that Laurie feels is beyond words. This is the man that has promised to love and care for her, but now he's found someone else. Someone that he wants more than her.
Laurie wants to fix things with her husband more than anything, but then one fateful night he ends up dead in their home, with Laurie becoming the prime suspect. A suspect in a crime that rocks the fragile little community of Cedar Close.
A gripping story about what one woman will discover in her quest to clear her name. Secrets and betrayals lie around every corner and she'll have to watch her back if she wants to make it through this.
Bookouture has a knack for selecting books to feature in the mystery and thriller genre. Really enjoyed this novel that is part mystery and part police procedural that ties in a neighborhood's secrets. While I do think the plot of a woman with no memory of what happened is starting to get severely overdone, this was done well.
I would rate this book 3.75 out of 5 stars
While I did find this to be incredibly predictable, it was also compulsively reading and I could not put it down.
Thank you NetGalley for a copy of “The Couple on Cedar Close”.
Sooo this book was pretty average... not bad by any means but not overly exciting either. After her husband who she is currently separated from fails to show up for dinner one night, Laurie Mills wakes up after a few alcoholic drinks to find him dead in her house with his blood all over her. I felt the first half of the book really kept my attention as I was trying to piece together everything and figure out who really killed Robert Mills. However, the reveal as to the killer and the reason why was anticlimactic. I actually had to read the few sentences over to make sure I read correctly. It was revealed in such a nonchalant way that I just wasn’t expecting. I obviously kept reading thinking there had to be more, and there was a little bit more, but everything was pretty predictable. I’m one that’s hard to catch off guard and the books that make me sit back and think “WAIT? What??” are truly my favorite and this book just didn’t really have that effect on me. Again, still not a bad book and if you like a good whodunit, I’d still recommend!
Not really one for me. There are enough tales of the scorned-woman’s revenge on shelves already that I struggled with the tropes in this one.
I found the title intriguing, but the narrative was rather samey and had all been written before. The characters were average, and nothing in the book inspired me. A little bit flat.
I was very excited to read this one based on the description and was so excited to dig into it. Although the novel was well-written and certainly had some twists and suspenseful moments, I felt like it was something I had already read and/or seen on Lifetime movie. I hate saying that because there were parts I really enjoyed and I loved the character of Detective Dan Riley. There is nothing "bad" about this book per se, it just didn't stick out in any way which considering how many suspense thrillers there are out there, I truly think they should stand out and be unique in some way.
The Couple on Cedar Close by Anna-Lou Weatherley was a sub-genre of thriller I tend to read often - stuff happens related to a troubled marriage. In this one, a husband is found dead. Much of the suspicion is around his wife. There's that time she found out her husband was having an affair at the neighborhood's summer barbeque that many neighbors remember. There's also that whole thing that the wife can't remember what went down that night. She's sure it wasn't her, but who the heck is going to believe that? The story is then pieced together as the wife tries to remember what happen, and the police go about their investigation to try to get more answers as to what went down. I liked that this one was told through the suspense of the story, but also through the investigation that was happening. It was a really good vehicle to raise questions and then discover some answers. There were some wild twists in this one, so if you need a thriller that's "good" where there are some twists as things/people aren't what they seem, then this should do the trick. Thanks to NetGalley for letting me check this one out as they always so kindly do.
A great page turner with pace and tension that kept me turning the pages until the end. Thanks to NG and the publisher for the advance copy,
I am in charge of our Senior School library and am looking for a diverse array of new books to furnish their shelves with and inspire our young people to read a wider and more diverse range of books as they move through the senior school. It is hard sometimes to find books that will grab the attention of young people as their time is short and we are competing against technology and online entertainments.
This was a thought-provoking and well-written read that will appeal to young readers across the board. It had a really strong voice and a compelling narrative that I think would capture their attention and draw them in. It kept me engrossed and I think that it's so important that the books that we purchase for both our young people and our staff are appealing to as broad a range of readers as possible - as well as providing them with something a little 'different' that they might not have come across in school libraries before.
This was a really enjoyable read and I will definitely be purchasing a copy for school so that our young people can enjoy it for themselves. A satisfying and well-crafted read that I keep thinking about long after closing its final page - and that definitely makes it a must-buy for me!
This is a great physiological thriller full of twists and turns. Are people born evil or do we become the product of our upbringing? I’d not heard of Anna Lou Weatherley before and while reading this I kept thinking this would make a great series the characters have so much to give, so I’m delighted to find that it is indeed a series and I’m now off to buy the first one Black Heart.
I'd like to thank Bookouture, Anna-Lou Weatherley and NetGalley for approving this book in exchange for an honest review!
The story presents us a married couple, Laurie and Robert Mills. But they are about to break up, because Robert is in love with another woman. He wants to marry that woman, but he is afraid of leaving Laurie because she is unstable.
One day they plan a meeting at her house so she thinks that maybe he changed his mind and wants to get back with her. She goes and shop, come home and cook his favourite meal.
But he doesn't arrive, so she starts drinking a lot until she can't remember anything. When she wakes up, all the power is gone and she feels something wet on her dress. She goes to the basement and turn on the electricity. Then she realizes she has blood on her dress.
Changing the point of view, we are now in the head of Daniel Riley, a badass cop that I really loved as a character. Lucy Davis, another great character comes to his office to announce him that a certain Robert Mills was found dead, and the wife called.
Going forward, the details are shown to us - some of them, of course! The story isn't rushing and the characters are relatable. Everyone thinks that Laurie killed her husband because she knew about the affair. So when she comes to the Police Station, she has to talk with Dan, our detective, and the annoying and bad cop, Delaney. Riley is the one who understand her and tries to see the facts without judging too quickly.
From time to time, we get to see another point of view, in the old days. Kiki is the daughter of a family who punishes her and praise their son, Bertie. But Bertie and Kiki are really great friends! He promises her that he will take her out of there and live a happy life together.
I guessed who the murderer was almost from the first quarter of the book. I wasn't sure if I was right, but my detective sense didn't cheated me! The plot is really thick as you continue reading and the ending is very satisfactory!
As I told you earlier, Dan Riley is my new favourite character. He is perfect in my opinion!
This book also reminded me of another one I read in the same month, and that is Little Darlings by Melanie Golding, another ARC from NetGalley. There were times when characters used to say "babe" a lot and that annoyed me a little. Also, the names of the main characters, Laurie Mills and Lauren Tranter. And the detective story was alike in some ways.
But this book is my favourite so far this year!
I highly recommend it to you! 5 STARS!
