Very strange style of writing. It's like some kind of passive tone, just blankly describing everything that happens without a perspective. I DNFed at 20%, I just couldn't get into the story at all with this writing style. Like reading a mildly interesting history book, or listening to a story from someone who isn't good at telling stories.
I received a copy from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
This novel had an interesting premise...time travel, shamanism, saving the world, while throwing in a touch of romance... but I lost interest relatively quickly. I got sucked in with the action in the beginning and I kept expecting that the story would build, and it didn’t in the way I thought it would.
It was choppy, the astral experiences lacked depth, characters were a toss up for me. It reminded me a bit of a new age religion book with a story.
That all being said, I finished it. It was ok, I didn’t hate it but I didn’t really like it either. I rounded up in my rating as initially I would have given it a 2.5
In this - the first novel in the Paradigm Shift - S. T. K. Chan has delivered a unique, and adaptive science-fiction fantasy novel, which it so utterly incorporeal, that it challenges the very reaches of the human-mind.
Beginning seemingly formalistic, the storyline quickly surpassed itself, turning into a cataclysmic set of events, where the chapters, and therefore the people, interlaced and twined together to create an intricate, and delicate intrigue.
Characterisation was above-average, although the characters developed into ultimately un-relatable entities. It could do with some polishing, to create a communised novel, but then, perhaps the novel would not benefit from that sort of polishing. It’s intricate issues give it character, and then it becomes its own entity, and being.
The idea of Future Comes From Behind is unique. The story has a good pace and is engaging. The characters are likeable. Overall a good read. Thanks to NetGalley for an arc in exchange for an honest review.
