I'm not quite sure what I was expecting, but I know this wasn't it. It starts off intense and gripping. Libby loves her son Ethan and is very attentive, but all it takes is the blink of an eye to lose him. So what's going on?! Who is this woman who has Ethan and how is she his mother?! The book was even okay when we learned about Anna, but as that story went on I began to lose interest fast. The story is more focused on something else, something I'm completely not interested in. I found it repetitious and unbelievable. I started skimming. I did read the twist, that was well done. The ending seemed rushed. If I had've known a bit more about what was going on before requesting this I wouldn't have bothered.
This is the first book I have read by Haylen Beck and I could not put it down. This was a quick weekend read for me as the action didn't stop. I loved the way the book was written, alternating between Anna and Libby. My only (slight) criticism would be that I didn't find 3-year-old Ethan's speech realistic. Through his words, I imagined him being older. Haylen Beck will certainly be on my list of authors to read!
This is the story of two mothers, both claiming they are the rightful mother of the same little boy, This psychological thriller has twists and turns that have you turning pages to see how things work out. Libby, a soon to be published author is headed on a vacation at the encouragement of her publisher, with her three year old son Ethan. Libby is a single parent and when she and Ethan arrive at the resort, she is thrilled to have made the trip. Ethan is also excited and he keeps running away from her at the resort and is especially excited by all the buttons in the elevator. They connect with some other visitors and are having a wonderful time, until after a fun night, Ethan once again, jumps into the elevator and pushes buttons and before she can stop it, the elevator doors close and Ethan is off on his ride. One that ends with him having vanished and Libby coming apart at the seams. Libby had turned her life upside down to have this child. She had done some things she was not proud of, to have this child. When they catch site of Ethan on the CCTV at the hotel, he is being led away by someone else. When Libby catches sight of who this someone is, her whole world crashes at her feet. She knows this woman.... someone from her past that she thought she would never see again.
What would you do to have your little boys in your arms? This book shows what two women do out of the desperation they feel, and how lives are forever altered as a result. This is a gripping book, with some components which you might want to question, as far as reality goes, but suspend your disbelief and hang on for the ride. This is a page turner if you are able to do that. It was hard to put down and thus was started and finished in less than 24 hours.
A fast-paced suspenseful read told from the view points of two different women who fiercely want to become a mother. There's Anna who lives a hard life and there's Libby who lives a more privileged one. Anna, in need of money, signs up to be a surrogate mother. Libby, who can't have children, pretends to be pregnant while waiting for Anna's baby.
Anna changes her mind and after she delivers takes the baby and tries to start a life. Libby cannot let go of her promised baby and tracks Anna down but she goes too far to get the baby back.
Three years later it's Anna's turn to track down Libby for the sole purpose of getting her child. Only it's not her child!
This was a great read with many twists and turns. I did not give it 5 stars because I felt like the ending was a bit rushed and not believable (for me).. I don't think that given her strong will, determination and feistiness that Anna would have taken her own life. Some might argue that she lost her mind and that her suicide was the only way for her to find peace.
This was an interesting, fast-paced book that was perfectly fine but never truly "did it for me" for some reason. I felt that the end was tied up rather quickly and I wanted more of the "current day" story. I did enjoy learning more about black market surrogacy. All in all this story was just deeply sad. My heart broke for Anna but also for Libby. She completely snapped and the desperation broke my heart. Solid 3 star read.
Thank you to Net Galley for this book. All opinions are my own.
I suspense novel that grabbed me at the start. Definitely some twists and turns along the way. The characters were well developed however they didn't really resonate with me.
I received this book "Lost You" from NetGalley and all opinions expressed are my own. A very interesting, different storyline. I enjoyed reading this book. Lots of suspense and twists and turns.
A fast paced, suspense filled novel that grabs you from the beginning and does not let go. It is about two women and their desperation to have a child. Anna decides to be a surrogate for Lbby, neither has ever met the other. As the pregnancy evolves, Anna begins to h ave second thoughts. Lilly's desperation to become a mother grows stronger. The story flip flops between each woman and continues to unfold until they eventually meet face to face and the tragedies that follow.
3.5 stars rounded up to 4.*
Lost You is the first book by Haylen Beck that I have read, and I will definitely look for more!
Another in a long string of psychological thrillers that I seem to be bingeing lately, Lost You is the story of Libby Reese, a young woman struggling with infertility, seemingly growing mad through her obsession with having a baby. The story flashes back and forth from the days of her fertility struggles that lead to insurmountable marital issues, to her life as a single mother to 3-year-old Ethan.
It's unclear how she finally became a mother to Ethan, but there is definitely a mystery and a secret that Libby desperately needs to keep. Libby takes Ethan on a vacation and befriends a childless gay couple who make it their mission to entertain Ethan and show Libby a good time (this part of the story seems perhaps the most far-fetched to me). One evening, Libby has a few too many drinks and loses sight of Ethan as he takes off into the elevator. The doors close before she can get to him and what ensues is a resort-wide search for Ethan resulting in a dead man, a suicidal woman and even more mystery.
Plenty of suspense in this one, and despite my reading far too many of this genre lately, Haylen Beck served up a great twist and surprised me! I enjoyed it and would definitely recommend! I'll be looking for more from Haylen Beck.
*with thanks to NetGalley for the digtal ARC in exchange for this honest review.
Absolutely loved this book! Couldn't put it down until it was finished. Will definitely be recommending to customers at my work!
This was a very good psychological suspense thriller. It deals with surrogacy and the mental toll it can take on a woman. It is a story of surrogacy gone terribly wrong, of two women who insist that each is the "real" mother. It was a horrific, distorted, work of psychological suspense. As the story unwinds, there are many surprises, twists and turns that make this an enjoyable read. It held my interest and kept pulling me back into the story. I was fortunate to receive this novel from Netgalley as an Advance Reader Copy, in exchange for an objective review.
If you loved Haylen Beck's first novel, Here and Gone, you will love Lost You. I could not wait for the author to write a second novel, and this one certainly did not disappoint! After doing a little research, I learned that Haylen Beck is a pseudonym for Stuart Neville, however, the novels written under Haylen Beck are completely different than Neville's novels. Here and Gone and Lost You reminded me of Harlan Coben's novels. Just when you think you have everything in the story figured out, they throw an incredible twist at you. Another edge-of-your-seat thriller that I could not put down!
What a suspenseful read! I read it in one sitting - I could not put it down. This book reminds me of Jodi Picoult's novels in that it has a twist in the end. The story starts out like a sweet family tale until the kidnapping happens - then it becomes a fast-paced read with unexpected twists and turns. I really enjoyed Lost You, and I would recommend it to fans of Picoult and Gillian Flynn.
The opening scene was disturbing, especially after caring for a small child that day. Then the story went back in time leading up to that scene.
There were too many instances of actions just not fitting the situation that I lost the desire to see where it would go and just stopped reading. There are too many good books out there to waste time finishing this one.
Thank NetGalley for the advance copy of the book.
I did want to like the book. It was just for me (at least) not a solid book. There was no person you could connect with. It seemed rushed and in spots, the dialogue was off for this U.S. reader. I did complete the book and just felt underwhelmed.
I received an ARC from NetGalley and Crown Publishing in exchange for my honest review.
Lost You, by Author Stuart Neville writing under his alias Hayden Beck.
I thoroughly enjoyed Mr. Nevilles' Ghost of Belfast series, they were intelligent, raw, and gritty. Almost impossible to believe this book was written by him.
The ending was just a wrap up. Both main were characters crazy and stupid. I kept thinking to myself, you are the stupid one for reading this drivel.
I am aware others loved this book, most thought it an ok solid read, guess I'm in the minority here.
Lost You gets a 3.5 for a fast paced story that enjoyable but predictable.
Libby is vacating when her son disappeared after entering the elevator without her. But Libby has a horrible secret that comes back to haunt her. A tale of terror, surrogacy and violence unveils itself in Libby's life.
The abduction is just the frame. The majority of the story is about Libby's surrogacy. The book jumps between three perspectives. Unfortunately these characters are all unlikeable. Haylen Beck adds complexity to the characters but overall they are all unlikable. I did almost feel for one character but then insanity took her away.
The book moves quickly building anticipation. You see what is going to happen and try to tell the characters to "stop!" but never the less, they each make one bad decisions after another. It is Beck's ability to keep the story moving that makes this story interesting. You have to know whether your predictions are correct or not.
An easy read, Lost You is a good choice for people who like shock drama.
This book was AMAZING! I didn’t see the big twist coming and I can usually predict what is going to happen in books! This one was just a twisty and thrilling ride that I didn’t want to end!
More like 3.5 stars. I would like to thank Netgalley and the publisher for the advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. As soon as I saw that Haylen Beck had a new book coming out, I immediately requested it on here as I had loved his first one, Here and Gone. That book was a thrill ride and I couldn't put it down. With that being said, Mr. Beck's second book for me just wasn't as great. While I still really enjoyed it and still consider it a thrilling, interesting read, I do prefer his first book. I would still recommend this for reader's advisory as I think if you were a fan of his first book, you would still enjoy it.
This was a great read! When a young lady loses her job she Inquires about an ad in the paper. To make this money she needs to become a surrogate carrying a baby for another family, which happens to be illegal in the state. The book takes a turn when she backs out of the deal wanting to keep the baby for herself. I could not put this book down!
