The Bookish Life of Nina Hill is a witty and charming romantic comedy that I couldn't get enough of!
Nina is someone that every reader will relate to and her journey of discovering and meeting her family that she didn't know existed for thirty years was beautiful and I loved seeing her growth. I honestly can't say enough good things about Te Bookish Life of Nina Hill.
Nina is awkward, but brilliant. She has anxiety, which she sees as a pitfall, but it truly makes her more human and lovable. She is a heroine that will have introverts standing up to cheer her on in this journey.
In my opinion I'd say that The Bookish Life of Nina Hill leans strongly to the women's fiction side of books and has less focus on the romance, but I wouldn't have it any other way. I mean hello, Nina just realized that she actually has a ton of relatives than she ever knew!
I was chuckling within minutes of beginning Nina's story and I come away feeling smarter and knowing many new random facts. In fact, I loved The Bookish Life of Nina Hill I'd already recommended it to multiple friends before the story was over.
I devoured the story and finished in less than a day, this it's a quintessential summer read. Light on the angst, but still emotional and moving. The Bookish Life of Nina Hill is a must read.
This book had me smiling all the way through. The story is a delightful and magical mix of quirky and adorable characters I wish I had in my life! Nina lives on her own, works in a bookshop, suffers with anxiety and has to plan every minute of every day so that she gets no surprises. Her Mom is a well known photographer and travels a lot. Nina was told her father was dead but then one day gets a visit from a lawyer who told her that her father recently died and she is mentioned in his will. She further learns she has siblings, nieces and nephews. This is a shock as Nina likes to be alone, especially to read, her favorite activity. I felt I was really with Nina as she comes to terms with her new family, the struggles of the bookstore and the new guy entering her life. I absolutely loved Nina and her quirky friends. A terrific feel-good book. This one earns a place on my ‘best ever books’ list!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Are you looking for a fun, quirky story with a loveable bookish character. One filled with family, friends and a little awkward romance? Then you need to grab, The Bookish Life of Nina Hill by Abbi Waxman. I adored Nina and hope you will too!
I’ve enjoyed previous stories by Abbi Waxman and was drawn to this title first by the cute cover and then by the synopsis… a cat loving, book lover who makes lists and works in a bookstore..hello Nina!
A full review will post at Caffeinated Reviewer on July 8th. I will share it on all social media for 90 days. A review will cross-post to Amazon and Goodreads. Link below.
I've read all of Abbi Waxman's books. I loved her first and was less than enthralled with her second. The Bookish Life of Nina Hill falls right in the middle. It has lots of elements to love- a long lost family, a blossoming love interest, personal discovery, and most importantly- a bookshop. I love books about books/bookshops. And that cover- LOVE it!
It was a quick, light, and entertaining read. However, with a little more development of both the characters and the story it could have been outstanding.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC. These are my opinions and are in no way influenced by the fact I got the ARC for free.
Nina was a fun character to follow and any introvert will relate to her. I enjoyed the dual storylines and wanted to find out what happened with her new family, as well as her love interest. This will be a great, summer read for fans of contemporary fiction. Thanks to NetGalley for the digital ARC.
On how I needed this book. I was in a slump and this gem of a novel lifted me right out of it. Funny, smart, and oh so relatable. A new author for me and I'm excited to read more.
(I’m only not buying it because I have limited funds in my HS library.)
I will read everything this author has or will ever write. I laughed so hard and enjoyed the journey with Nina Hill so very much. And, what I thought could prove to be a dreary little story actually turned into a beautifully layered and real and very funny and fun romp. I dug it! 🤓💜📚
This was a really nice book. There was drama, romance, friendships, family relationships. A little bit for everyone!!
*4.5 stars ✨
I swear a lot of this book was about my life!! Nina was a great character to follow because I was curious to see how her well organized life would cope with all the new changes that happened to her. In parts I saw myself so she was very relatable. I loved that she worked in a bookstore, and her relationship with her friends and boss were fun to watch. Sometimes I felt the secondary characters all acted the same way but, none the less, I still enjoyed them. I wish there had been more to the romance, I felt that was a little lacking. Overall, I found the story to be fun and relatable.
*Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Laugh out loud story of Nina, who was raised by a nanny, not knowing who her father was, and her mother travelled extensively. She prefers to be left alone and to read rather than socialize. Upon her father's death, she discovers she has quite and extensive family, complicated even further by a love interest. Not to be missed.
A quick read outside my typical genre that made me want to find out how it ends - even if just to see what she inherited from her father. It was lighthearted with many funny moments that made me laugh out loud. Any chick lit loving book nerd will enjoy this read!
Everything I could ever want in a book! Humor, pop culture, romance and trivia. Perfect! AExcited to read more from this author.
The Bookish Life of Nina Hill is my new favorite book!
Nina is an introvert who loves to read, talk to her cat, read, spout useless trivia, read, and plan her life around reading. Nina loves order, but when she finds out that her father (who she never knew) has died, she inherits a large extended family that she's not quite sure she can handle. Problems at the bookstore she works and a potential love interest, combine to kick Nina's anxiety into high gear.
Nina Hill is someone I can relate to in so many ways! She is a book lover and has issues with anxiety that she manages to explain realistically. I will definitely be reading more of Abbi Waxman's books!
Thank you very much for allowing me the opportunity to read this book! I appreciate the kindness. <3
The Bookish Life of Nina Hill is so unapologetically bookworm. Nina works in a bookshop, is a master of trivia, cannot imagine being with someone who doesn't read, and has reading in her top list of favorite things of all time. It's a book for anyone who has ever felt closer to a fictional character, than those around them. But it's also for those who are super organized, planning their life, and the fear of not being prepared for the surprises of life.
Nina was a delightful heroine. I loved all the book references and the description of the Los Angeles setting.
Nina Hill is a bookworm working in a bookstore, she’s got her trivia team, she’s devoted to her planner, and she’s got her cat, Phil. Most of the time she feels like her life is great as it is but there are times when she wonders if she’s missing out.

Nina never knew her father but when he dies she’s thrown the curveball of finding out she has a huge family. And Nina isn’t a fan of surprises. And to add to it all, she’s realizing there seems to be a spark between her and Tom, a guy from an opposing trivia team. Being the type of person who prefers silence and books over people, will Nina make it through this without losing her mind?

I’m new to this “cute” (for lack of a better word) type of genre, but I’ve really been liking them this year and I keep hunting for more. This book was a great addition! It gave me a lot of laughs, I loved the sarcasm, there were a lot of fun book and movie references, and it just made me happy! Nina is the kind of relatable character who you wish you could meet in real life. I liked this book so much that at about halfway through I ordered another of Abbi Waxman’s books, The Garden of Small Beginnings!
Love Love Love! This is my first Abbi Waxman book, and will not be my last. I loved everything about it, but especially that it celebrates the type of personality I can relate to. Nina Hill is a book lover, book seller, book club hostess, book collecting introvert. She is happy with her life and happy being alone. Things change for her when she finds out the father she's never known knew about her, and left her something in his will. Suddenly Nina has siblings, nieces and nephews in her life, while at the same time she's discovering she really likes Tom from the opposing Trivia Team. Well-developed characters and Nina's funny, quick wit keep the story moving. Highly recommend!
This book is one of the quirkiest and fast talking.
And when I saw that I mean it in the best possible way.
The Bookish Life of Nina Hill is the story of a introverted bookstore employee named Nina Hill. Nina has friends, goes on dates sometimes, and frequents various activities such as book clubs and trivia nights. However, that doesn't mean Nina does not get anxious or enjoy reading a book in the comfort of her own home. Something you also need to know about Nina is she likes structure, order, planners, and seems to live her life by them. That is all about to change though when she discovers not only the identity of her father, but her new family as well.
Something I really enjoyed about this book is first of all the characters. All of the characters in this story are interesting, smart, and quippy. Honestly, if this book was made into a show or movie then I would want Amy Sherman-Palladino (aka the creator of Gilmore Girls) to direct it. I love how even the children characters have quips in their back pockets. The characters in this book were ones that felt realistic and extremely fun to get to know. I really love how Nina was represented as someone with anxiety and introversion, but the author still had her going out, going on dates, and doing a variety of other activities. A lot of times introverted characters can be written similar to someone with agoraphobia (not that there is anything wrong with that or that there are characters that don't have both agoraphobia and anxiety). So I appreciated the fact that this character was written to be someone who likes to be somewhat outgoing when it comes to her activities, but does enjoy keeping to herself a lot of times too. It was very relatable to me and I feel that most of the characters will feel that way to readers. Nina also has a lot of great bonds in the book. I especially love the relationship between Millie and Nina. Them being sisters and loving reading was really cool and cute to see.
That leads me into my next point about the book which is the relationships. This book introduces a variety of relationships and everyone seems to have some form of chemistry or ability to bounce off one another. I could picture the romance blossoming between Tom and Nina. I could see the sisterly bond between Millie and Nina. I could see the friendship forming between Nina and Lili. I could even see the somewhat rivalry or at least one sided resentment between Lydia and Nina. The relationships in this book felt sincere, strong, and ones that will cause readers to form an emotional bond with these characters till the very last page.
Finally, the last reason I loved this book was the atmosphere that it gave. The book, again, felt very much like a Amy Sherman-Palladino show and similar to Gilmore Girls or a Hallmark movie. It gave me so many warm feelings and is the perfect book for someone looking to read a story that just radiates happiness and comfort.
The only reason I am not giving this book 5 stars is that I felt it wasn't wrapped up as much as I wanted for the family. I wanted to see a little more of Nina's bond with her new family at the end of the story and I was sad to see we didn't really get that. I enjoyed the book ending and felt it was the right way to go, but at the same time I wanted a little more at least from the family relationships that Nina makes. Other than that though, I can't really think of much to complain about regarding this book.
Overall, this book is the equivalent of comfort food and I mean that in the best way I can. It has great family, friendship, and romantic dynamics. It has relatable characters who are funny, smart, and wisecracking. And the writing was superb. I can't say this enough, but I honestly hope Amy Sherman- Palladino makes a book to film adaptation of The Bookish Life of Nina Hill her next project. For now though, I think readers will be happy to be introduced to these wonderful characters and will enjoy the time they get to spend with them in between the pages of this book.
I know I did.
This book is great for lovers of books and adding a twist of romance, long lost family, a distant mom and trivia make this book a must read.
