I really enjoyed this spin-off of Peter Pan. The characters, the plot, the inclusion of a special needs main character-I liked it all! Great story!
A heartwarming continuation of J. M. Barrie's classic story. A great book for middle grade readers. Includes mythology and accurate Autistic representation.
My kids and I love anything Neverland so I was excited to share this book with them. It kept everyone entertained and there were plenty of requests for me to keep on reading which is always a sign up a great book :)
What a magical book! I love how it was modernized in little quirky ways! A delight to read! Thank you netgalley for the free arc in exchange for an honest review!
You might not expect Neverland and Greek/Roman mythology to mesh well, but Adrian pulls it off. This is largely because she establishes early on that Neverland reshapes itself based on the current occupants and visitors. It only makes sense, then, that an adventure for mythology obsessed Fergus would have a mythological bent. Not only are the plot elements well integrated, Fergus and Clover are well developed characters. They go through significant changes, forced to address the flaws in their characters that are addressed in the early chapters.
I do have a single, major complaint. In the early chapters we meet the children's grandfather, a gruff man who has no patience and no understanding of Fergus. This early conflict is never resolved. It's never even addressed again. Clover and Fergus have interactions with their mother and grandmother but the grandfather is notably absent in the novel's resolution.
The fact that one of the main characters is autistic is what mainly prompted me to request this book. I work with children with autism and this book really interested me. I loved this book. This modern day sequel was so interesting and really kept me entertained through out the whole book. Definitely a great read!
Clover and Fergus live in San Diego, California. They are flying to London to stay with their grandparents who they have never met before while their mother studies to pass the test to be a lawyer. Fetus is autistic so Clover has been told by their mother to take care of Fergus. Upon going to bed in their grandparent’s home, Fergus is surprised to see a boy outside the window. At first Clover doesn’t believe him. Grandma explains after hearing Fergus, that they are the great-great grandchildren of Wendy from the story of Peter Pan. She tells them that Peter Pan wants to take them on an adventure in Neverland. Fergus wants to go but Clover is hesitant. They do go with Peter Pan and have an adventure beyond belief yet so real! Peter Pan and Fergus must save Clover and the two mermaids that have been captured by a sea monster named Scylla. Why does Scylla kidnap them? When trying to bargain with Scylla, it is discover by Fergus who she really was in the past. Scylla wants Circe the witch and goddess who turned Scylla into a monster to change her back to her normal self. Will they be able to convince Circe to change Scylla back to her true self? Will Fergus and Clover return to London or stay in Neverland? Do one of the lost boys go to London?
A fantastic story with action and quiet moments giving the reader a chance to learn who Clover and Fergus are. The story is seen through four different narrators. One experiences how the different narrators sees and what they think making the story a wonderful experience for me to read. It is a perfect followup to the original story of Peter Pan. I ended feeling happy after reading this novel. I don’t think I will ever forget this story!
I absolutely love Peter and Wendy and this little modern day sequel did not disappoint! I loved the fun in Neverland with the Mythology thrown in!
This was a great Peter Pan tale. I enjoyed that the chapters alternated between the point of view of Clover and Fergus. I liked that we got to get inside Fergus' head and see autism from his point of view. Forever Neverland was a beautiful story that I would definitely recommend.
Forever Neverland was a beautiful take on Peter Pan! I’d never connected PP to Greek mythology and so I loved that aspect. Fergus and Clove were such great characters and the adventure they went on was fascinating and well written. I can’t wait to use this in my classroom!
Side note: I loved being in Fergus’ head because he is Autistic. His character will be very relatable for all kids, it just kids on the spectrum.
I received an advance copy. All thoughts are my own.
Forever Neverland was a lot of fun to read. Neverland has gone through some changes over the years, but it still full of plenty of magic and there is always some adventure going on. It turns out some new evil has ended up there too, one that will be a real challenge to take down. If you are a fan of the Peter Pan story then you will want to check this book out.
This is definitely going to the top of my list of favorite read-alouds for 2019! Packed with page-turning action and adventure and sprinkled with a generous helping of Greek mythology, you don't want to miss this one. My 8 and 11 year old loved it so much they frequently chose reading over screen time and bed times got pushed a little later because I couldn't say no to "one more chapter" since I wanted to see what would happen next just as much as they did!.
Fergus and Clover are the great grandchildren of Wendy Darling which they only discover after traveling to England to spend a few weeks with their grandparents while their mom studies for the bar exam. The two are quickly swept off to Neverland by the ageless Peter Pan for an amazing adventure that will challenge them on many levels. Fergus especially enjoys Neverland because he can be himself there. He's autistic and is frequently looked at strangely and ridiculed back home in California. In Neverland though, the Lost Boys (and girls) take his quirks in stride and he is treated as one of them.
Great themes of friendship, compassion and kindness without any questionable language or violence. I highly recommend this story for ages 6 and beyond.
Thank you to #NetGalley and Random House for allowing me to read an advance copy of this delightful story in exchange for my honest opinion. All opinions are my own (well...and those of my children).
Neat take on the Peter Pan story. Autism is getting a lot of attention in stories lately, but this onegave the autistic child some freedom to have his own adventure without his family. It gave him a chance to be a hero. I enjoyed this tale and think kids 4th grade up will, too.
This was a nice return to the world of Peter Pan and the Neverland world. American siblings Clover and Fergus are visiting their grandparents in England who they have never met. Fergus is autistic, so that makes Clover extra protective of him on their trip. When they arrive, Fergus sees a boy in the window who they realize is Peter Pan. The two discover that they are descendants of Wendy Darling and soon, they are off on their own Neverland adventure.
This was very compelling, adventurous, and fun story to read. I love how they incorporated Greek mythology into their adventures. Clover and Fergus are dual narrators which added even more depth to it, as we got to see how each viewed the adventure. Peter Pan is there, but they also introduce new Lost Boys, pixies, and mermaids to round out the Neverland characters. It was a very enjoyable read and kept in the Peter Pan spirit
I love Peter Pan, so I knew I wanted to read this book. I loved the story. Great adaptation to a classic.
I grew up on Peter Pan with it being one of my favorite stories. So this was like diving back into a piece of my childhood. Especially since much of the plot takes place at Mermaid Lagoon which was always my favorite location in Neverland. As one of my favorites I've read many different adaptations of it. But this one was different and managed to feel fresh instead of a tired retread. The author blends both Peter Pan and Neverland's history with Greek mythology for the plot. And it works seamlessly. Fergus is autistic with a love of Greek mythology who provides much needed background information on our main antagonist. I've never read a story before where autism is treated like a norm versus a crutch or burden. It's refreshing and definitely gives new perspective to those who have never dealt with it before.

Thank you to Random House Children's and NetGalley for an e-ARC of this fun book!
I loved this so much! Clover and Fergus are such cute characters that are so different but both are intriguing throughout the entire story. I have to say Fergus was my favorite. He was a genius when it came to Greek Mythology and I LOVE Greek Myths! This was such a cool retelling of what happens to the generations after Wendy Darling. I loved that there were Greek monsters and (Circe!) instead of pirates and Tick Tock. Peter wasn't evil but was actually a kind and strong character like the original and I appreciated that. This was just the perfect combination of Greek Mythology and a Peter Pan retelling. Even though it's middle grade it's still relatable and intriguing. Their was a lot of character building and lessons. And the descriptions are gorgeous, I certainly felt like I was in Neverland! Bravo to the author for writing such a gorgeous book!
What an amazing and adorable version of Peter Pan! I especially love what happens to the lost boys (kids?) when/if they want to grow up and the continuation of the Wendy/Jane family tradition of going to neverland. One of the best fantasies I've read this year!
Oh to be able to go to Neverland & have an adventure with the one & only Peter Pan!!
I love that this story is a continuation of the original tale of Peter Pan & his many adventures with the Darling family. Though Wendy, John & Michael have all grown & moved on, the great-great grandchildren, Clover & Fergus take up where their own grandmother left off.
Clover learning that she needs to let loose & let go of control. She learns the hard way that maybe she doesn’t always have to make sure that Fergus is okay & be helpful, that she can be young & carefree; take hold & have her own adventure in this tale. Fergus being free to be himself & not to have to worry how his actions & reactions will make people feel. Being autistic in the real world is hard enough with all the stimulations & sensory overload but to see him grow & flurish in Neverland, not being judged is such a beautiful thing to see as he grows into a self-sure individual.
I would definitely recommend this to students & to friends to take them down memory lane with a new twist.
This book continues the fun adventures of Peter Pan that we all grew up with. The story has familiar characters and introduces some new ones that the author develops and brings to life for the reader. This is a fun, quick read for those 8-10 years old.
I received this ARC ebook from NetGalley for my honest opinion.
