We Walked the Sky by Lisa Fiedler is wonderful! I was very surprised by this story. I enjoyed the two timelines and how the woven together. I prefer the 1965 flashback of Victoria rather then Calies. We start off with Victoria who is escaping a bad home and joins the circus. I had so much fun reading about her time at the circus and all the people who are there. I liked how everyone works together to make this thing work. We soon jump to Callie's timeline that is fifty years later and her mother is making them leave the circus. And starting over in an animal sanctuary in Florida. The two stories really do play so well together. One thing I loved most about Callie's timeline is that she gets a box that belongs to Victoria and has little notes that Victoria wrote thought her life. Then the way that these note play into Callie's life is so neat. I read this in one day I couldn't help but be lost in this world. I wanted to know what was going to happen to these characters! The writing style is very pretty. I felt that Lisa Fiedler's writing painted this world and these characters so well, that they felt real. I believed that Victoria and what she went through, I understand Callie needs to want to do the tightrope. Also, can we just look at this cover! I love how it blends these two stories into one beautiful photo! Please give this book a read, you will not be sorry for the incredible story.
This is a story across generations about how the pass creates paths to the future, new starts and following your passions.
This is a beautiful, touching story of Victoria and her grandaughter Callie. Victoria escapes from an abusive father and creates her own life in the Van Drexel Family Circus. Meanwhile 50 years in the future, Callie uses notes left by her grandmother to navigate challenges in her own life. A beautifully constructed novel. While Victoria's story was a bit more compelling and Callie was a little whiny, the novel was enjoyable and well worth the time.
We Walked the Sky by Lisa Fiedler is a coming-of-age story that grabbed my eye with its beautiful cover—a girl balanced on a wire between a circus tent and a lifeguard stand on a beach. I’m a sucker for circus imagery and whimsy. Fiedler tells this story in two perspectives—from 1965, when Victoria flees her abusive father and runs away to join the circus, and 50 years later with Victoria’s granddaughter Callie, who is torn away from her beloved circus in favor of a more “normal” life by her mother. It’s a quick read and it’s lovely to see how Victoria’s experiences help Callie through her own challenges. Don’t be put off by Callie’s bratty, entitled moments—it’s clear that her growth as a character is well underway.
In the 1960's, Victoria runs away from an abusive father and joins the VanDrexel Family Circus. After trying out a variety of jobs, she finds a talent for the tightrope and begins falling for one of the VanDrexel's sons. In the present day, Callie, Victoria's granddaughter, and her mother have left the circus to live and work at an exotic animal rescue facility. Callie, outraged that she is no longer walking the tightrope, is determined to rejoin the circus.
This book was a bit boring. There was a lot of teenage angst, which was a bit off-putting. The book featured short alternating chapters, which made it feel like neither the story or characters were very well developed. Overall, a bust.
We Walked the Sky is the parallel stories of Callie Van Drexel and her grandmother, Victoria. Both were star tightrope walkers at the Van Drexel Family circus. Callie's story follows her transition from circus life to that of a traditional High School and living in one place while Victoria's follows her running away to join the circus. The story of Victoria is more fleshed out and complete while Callie's is a bit rushed and incomplete. It was still an interesting story, but it really felt like it needed more story, more substance.
This exploration of multiple generations, and the connections between the two narrators, was so elegantly done and evocative. I wouldn't be surprised to see this book sweep awards upon release!
I've always been interested in the circus, for some reason, though I don't want to run off and join one! I guess it's that fascination with the performing and traveling lifestyle. I enjoyed this story and the elements of the circus in 2 time periods. Interesting to see the bit of portrayal of the circus in contemporary times as I'm sure it has changed quite a bit. I read it in one day on vacation and really enjoyed the characters and the setting.

Oh my! Absolutely adored this book! For fans of Water for Elephants and the Greatest Showman, here is your next read in YA form. We Walked the Sky is a multi-generational story which flips between present day Callie and her grandmother Victoria as a teen in 1965. Perfectly woven together, we are told the story of a young teen escaping abuse by running away and hitching a ride with the circus and teen who would do anything to go back to the circus she loves. Victoria dreams of freedom with no strings or family attached, but finds her freedom in the family of the circus. Callie desperately wants to return to her solo act on the high wire, but learns that even in a solo act, you have to depend on others. Fiedler’s writing is impeccable, painting a beautiful world behind the scenes of the big top in a circus where animals are treated like the kings they are and the circus folk are a true family. This will definitely be purchased for our library. Release Date: July 2nd, 2019 #wewalkedthesky #lisafiedler
