This title is no longer being published according to a statement made by the author and it would not be beneficial for me to review it at this time.
Since this title has been pulled from publication I cannot read or review it at this time. Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley.
Due to the author and publisher pulling this book from publication I won’t be able to review it. That said, I hope this book will come back because it sounds amazing.
Due to the author withdrawing this book, I am unable to provide a proper review. I thank the author and publisher for approving my request in the first place and look forward to the revised edition of this book. I sincerely wish the author all the best, that she will rest, recover from this brouhaha, and revise to the best of her ability.
This title has been pulled from publication so I cannot read and review it at this time. I respect the author's decision and would be interested in reading an updated version in the future.
Hello, this won't be an actual review of this book due to recent news regarding this book. But for what it's worth, i love the banter between the characters and the concept of the world (about affinity and such). I also love the friendship between Ana and May and Ana and Linnet. Thank you for approving this book for me, and I hope for the best in the future! I will definitely look forward to read the revised and improved version of Blood Heir.
Since this title has been pulled from publication I cannot read or review it at this time. Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley.
Since this is no longer being published at this time, I don't feel comfortable reviewing at the moment. Though I think that the author's desire to make changes is admirable, and I would absolutely read in the future.
I unfortunately cannot review this book at this time due to the author and publisher pulling the book from publication. I wish all the best to Amelie and I look forward to reading a revised and updated story. I hope everyone can respect her decision to pull the book to make it the best story possible for her readers.
Due to the current circumstances of this book, I don't believe it's fair to give my thoughts on this without seeing future revisions and changes. I am looking forward to seeing the new version of this book and will be thrilled to read it and review it once the changes have been made. Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for giving me access to this book.
I will not be reviewing this book at this time. I was looking forward to reading this however and would be eager to read an updated version at a later date.
Unable to give a review since the author has pulled the book. Hopefully I can read it in the future!
I'm not really sure what to say or do in these types of situations, as I'm still pretty new to this, but I'm writing this to state that I won't be putting forth a review due to the cancelation of this book. I'm sorry, but I wasn't really sure what else to do about this, and I didn't want this to impact my feedback ratio.
If at any point this book does return to being published, I would be happy and glad to read and review it. Again, I'm sorry. I wish nothing but the best to whoever reads this.
I would not be reviewing the book at this time because of the author’s decision to postpone the publication. However, i would love to review any updated version of the book when available in the future.
Real rating: 1.5 stars.
This book is one disastrous and insulting mess. The character development is terrible. The characters decisions are terrible. There are so many flashbacks, I read more flashbacks than actual present plot and story. Characters will be introduced and suddenly give sage advice—no one says these things to someone they just met. The romance is horrendous and barely existent and should really just be removed so readers don’t have to endure this start and stop. A lot of exposition is repeatative (especially flashbacks). There is murder and deaths that are simply done for shock value and don’t further the story in any way. The mood and feel of the book is always at a five on the emotional spectrum, no matter what I was reading I didn’t care. There was no build up to the twists and deaths and climax of the book. It all fell flat. And then there is the horrible representation of slaves and slavery that made me so disgusted I had to skim some of the parts. Not because it was written in a “This is to open your eyes and break barriers” kind of way. But because it was represented in a careless and personally vindicated way. The author is of mixed race. The author’s note at the beginning of the book, THE FIRST THING YOU READ FROM HER, is full of this bitter and aggressively blamefull tone about how she has been made to feel like a monster in the states and so on. I will never understand what minorities and people of color have to go through, but I do know that the way this book represented its “diversity” was wrong and upsetting. (Btw. What diversity? The “bronze” skin? Is that all? Are you joking?) The MC is constantly at odds with herself about being a Monster. Okay, that’s fine. That’s a normal thing in YA when a girl has dangerous powers. BUT THIS MC, SHE ACTUALLY IS A MONSTER, SHE KILLS FOR NO REASON AND HAS NO IMPULSE CONTROL. AND THEN LATER WHINES ABOUT IT. I accept this trope if the character actually is a good and hopeful soul, Ana was a mess and her lack of control bordered on stupidity. The other MC was set up to be this imposing and brilliant con man, a high class criminal—yet the author never once let him be that way. We were told over and over he was a badass, but he was constantly thwarted in an attempt to be “diverse” and have the guy needed to be saved the whole time. LET MEN BE BADASS ITS OKAY. THE ISSUE IS HAVING WOMEN BE PATHETIC AAAANDDDD NEED TO BE SAVED. YOU CAN HAVE A BADASS WOMAN AND STILL HAVE HER NEED HELP. EVERYONE NEEDS HELP SOMETIMES. The steering was fine, but the Russian references and language usage was off to me—after further investigation I’ve discovered that the author uses wrong make/female declentions...how could this be a problem, why did no one check this? There was so much obvious influence in this book, it read like a Shadow and Bone/Nevernight fanfiction at some points...
I’m sure there is more. But I’m very angry about this one, so I’m cutting myself off now.
I am sad that the book is being pulled, it has potential if the author and Delecorte would clean it up and realize their mistakes and overreach. The magic is cool, though I’m pretty sick and tired of the whole “magic users scare us so we oppress them” trope. I hate for a promising book to be thrown out and a promising author to probably have her career ruined. Everything in this book the author attempted to do, the massages she wanted to express, could be done—just with a little more tact, I think. But, alas. Here we are.
As the title has been pulled from publication, I will not be reviewing at this time. I look forward to reading a reviewing a revised version of the book in the future.
Much like everyone else, I will not be reviewing this in light of recent events.
I do hope the publisher allows a re-work with extensive sensitivity readings. The last thing I want to see if Amelie's career not bloom as she does seem very sincere in her apology and does want to improve.
3.5 stars
It took me a little while to get into this story, but once I did I actually really enjoyed it. It started off a bit slow, but it picked up the pace as the story moved along. Ana is such an interesting character and I truly grew to love her. I just wanted her to be safe and happy for once. Also, her relationship with Ramson was very interesting, too. Like, their dynamics are so odd, but very interesting as well.
The only reason I'm not rating this book higher is because I wasn't really feeling it at the start, just because, while setting up the story, things moved kind of slow and I wasn't 100% invested.
Because of some things that the author would like to change in this book, it is no longer being published.
Due to the publishing of this book being cancelled, I will not be reviewing it for the time being. If it does get released later on, I will read and review it then.
The star rating I have given this book does not relate to my feelings at all whatsoever, I had to give a star rating in order to post this feedback.
Thank you for the opportunity to read this book.
I was really excited to read Blood Heir by Amelie Wen Zhao, so when I saw my netgalley request was accepted, I was ecstatic! Then I saw the controversy on twitter and that Amelie had pulled the book from production and I found out that I was not going to be able to read the book/give it a review. I understand why that decision was made and I really admire the author for doing that and I'm really looking forward to reading any other books that she ends up writing!
