This one-volume history of WWII has a strong global sweep, which some narrative histories of "the good war" lack. Antony Beevor is an excellent writer, another rare skill among popular historians. The final chapters are a reminder that war's brutality did not wind down, like the savage suppression of the Prague uprising. There is an even-handedness to this narrative that I found refreshing as well.
