Great thriller that kept me turning the pages, a great story with intriguing characters that kept me turning the pages. Highly recommend to others!
I DNF'd this shortly after starting. Just wasn't my writing style. This was my first time reading a Lisa Jackson novel. I gave it a solid try, but couldn't get through it. It may be because it's an older novel and reads like that.
As much as I enjoy Jackson I wasn't totally into this book.
A story full of romance and not much of the thrill ride I like from Jackson.
This in no way shape or from will detour me from reading Jackson she will always be a favorite of mine and cannot wait to read more from her.
I’m a huge fan of Jackson and once again she doesn’t disappoint. Unlike some authors who churn out books at the rate she does, she gives each the same TLC she always has. Bravo!
As a writer, Lisa Jackson gives us believable characters with interesting back stories. While Backlash is a re-release of two older Jackson books, her fans would recognize her writing style and appreciate the energy and emotion built into these two brothers returning to their home after a fire killed their parents seven years prior. These are shorter stories so quick reads for me. The mystery and suspense with a touch of romance thrown in are hallmarks of a Lisa Jackson story. Loved them!
The funning thing about this book, I had a strange feeling that I read this book before. Just to find out this wasn’t a new story just a compile of two of her old books into one story. It doesn’t negate the fact I enjoyed the mystery. It goes to show that even an old read book, is new if you haven't read it in awhile.
This is a reissue of Lisa Jackson's Tender Trap and Aftermath. The cover had been changed and the two books combined. I have to say that you can tell these are from 30 years ago because Lisa Jackson has definitely come a long way with her writing! I felt like these were sort of slow compared to her other books for me. Not that the story wasn't good and all, just slower moving than I am used to.
Denver returns home because his uncle has passed away and left his ranch to him and his brother, Colton. Denver does not have good memories from the ranch because seven years previous, his parents did in a fire at the ranch and the fire left Denver seriously injured. Denver just wants to be done with the ranch, but he can't sell it until he finds his brother Colton and he is no where to be found right now. Denver's old flame, Tessa wants to buy the ranch but Colton is the hold up now.
Denver is eager to get back to his work in LA, but is steadily being drawn back by Tessa to the ranch and the business at hand there. When strange things start happening at the ranch, Denver is determined to find out what is going on.
In the second book. Colton returns to the ranch and tries to take care of matters there. It is hard for Colton because he is injured and his old fling keeps turning up as well. Cassie is still in love with Colton but Colton is not ready for any sort of serious relationship yet. Cassie and Colton's families are feuding which just adds fuel to the fire and the selling of the ranch.
This was still a good read by Lisa Jackson but just slow for me. I am anxious to see what Lisa Jackson gives her readers next.
All opinions are my own. Thanks to Netgalley, the publisher and the author for an advanced copy of this book!
In this release bu Lisa Jackson, Backlash is a re-release of previous novels, Tender Trap and Aftermath. In the first book, Denver McLean returns home because his uncle died and left his ranch to him and his brother Colton. Denver is not happy with this because his history is tragic. Seven years previously there was a fire and his parents died, and he was seriously injured. Meanwhile, his old flame, Tessa Kramer, wants to buy the ranch. Thing is, Colton is nowhere to be found, so Denver cannot sell the ranch.
Denver has business in LA and he really wants to get back to it. However, he is drawn to Tessa and that changes his perspective. While making his decision there are problems with the property, especially when a prize stallion disappears. Also, some horses become ill. So, something definitely is going on that might hinder the success of the ranch.
In the second story in this omnibus, Colton returns to the ranch when he is seriously injured. Things are not easy for Colton. For one reason there is Cassie Aldridge. Several years previously, they had a brief fling, and it so happens that Cassie still loves Colton. As far as Colton is concerned, he still desires Cassie, but he isn't ready to have a relationship. There are definitely problems. For starters, a horse named Black Magic is missing. In addition to that, Colton's family is feuding with Cassie's family. So a relationship would be very difficult. Nonetheless, the heart wants what the heart wants when it comes to Colton and Cassie.
As I read this book, I admit that it was a read that I couldn't engage in. I felt that it dragged quite a bit. Quite naturally, I was rooting for the couples to find love. As far as mystery and intrigue were concerned, it was a bit lacking. But, I adore Lisa Jackson, so I worked hard at reading this book and I am eager to read her next release, Paranoid.
Many thanks to Zebra and to NetGalley for this ARC to review in exchange for my honest opinion.
Title: Backlash
Author: Lisa Jackson
Genre: romance
pages:514
Has in it : Tender and Aftermath
Dear Reader,
Montana has provided the setting for some of my favorite stories. In the late 1980s I wrote Tender Trap and Aftermathfeaturing Denver and Colton McLean—two brothers returning to their family ranch after years away, confronting the secrets left behind. I’m thrilled that they’re now available in one volume, with a striking new cover and title, Backlash . . .
The ranch country of Montana is beautiful, unforgiving, and for Colton and Denver McLean, filled with a whole lot of bad memories. It’s been seven years since a fire claimed their parents’ lives and drove both brothers away. Now their uncle’s death has brought them back to a place where loyalty and love runs deep—but so do grudges.
Suspicion still swirls about what caused that tragic fire. It created a rift between Denver and the foreman’s daughter, Tessa Kramer. Now Tessa hopes to buy the ranch, if Denver and Colton will agree to sell, but the property is beset by problems. A prized stallion disappears. Other horses start falling sick. Someone seems determined to disrupt—or destroy—the McLean family’s legacy by any means necessary. And finding answers will turn this homecoming into a time of reckoning with enemies past and present . . .
My thoughts
Rating: 3.5
Would I recommend it: no
Will I read anything else by this author? yes
it had the romance but unfortunately it didn't have the suspense I was hope it would have, there was times I wanted to put it down because of how slow both stories seem to be which was other surprise for me because I tend to like Lisa Jackson's work , but this one not so much, with that said I want to say thanks to Natgalley for letting me read and review .
Dear Reader,
Montana has provided the setting for some of my favorite stories. In the late 1980s I wrote Tender Trap and Aftermath featuring Denver and Colton McLean—two brothers returning to their family ranch after years away, confronting the secrets left behind. I’m thrilled that they’re now available in one volume, with a striking new cover and title, Backlash . . . I was lucky enough to get an arc of this book and enjoyed it Tessa was 19 and in love. On a horseback ride she gave her all to handsome Denver McLean only to have him desert her without a word after a fire leaved him with scars, his parents dead and suspicion hanging over Tessa's father. Now Denver is back after seven years. His outward scars from are healed, but inside . . . What returns is a cold, embittered stranger. I am a hopeless romantic because I loved how Tessa saw Denver as the boy she remembered. I also enjoyed that the book had a resolution and that it has a nice tight conclusion with a few twists. Then you have Aftermath which deals with Colton and Cassie and this one I had a harder time wrapping my head around. Not because the relationship wasn’t believable but because Colton was such a hard character for me to enjoy in the first book. After a gunshot wound, he comes back home and Cassie is back in his life and he is not sure that it is something he wants or can handle. While I do not want to give away the story the crafty back story helps the reader understand there past. I have read many Lisa Jackson books and gifted more then my share. This one I just had a hard time connecting with. All and all a 3-star read.
Thanks to netgalley for the opportunity to have read this book. This book is actually a combination book, and reissue of two previous books by her, already written 30 years ago. This did not diminish the books in any regard and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Recommended.
I’m not sure whether I didn’t read the blurb at all or just skimmed through it but this book was not what I expected it to be. I read a couple of books by this author and generally liked them, I thought this time that I was requesting a mystery and it turned out to be the kind of romances I don’t like to read.
It is actually a reissue of two books published separately in the eighties collected together in the same edition. From my humble point of view that wasn’t a good decision.
The first story was relatively bearable although it felt composed mainly of different variations of the same kind of scenes and it annoyed me. The story was by no means unique, and i had to skip many parts. It was mostly a 2 Stars story for me.
Now the second book, which is set in the same place and featuring characters related to those of the first story, was just not good enough, I really felt like reading the exact same story as the first one with just different names. Even the “twists” felt just thrown into the story.
I thought I would give it all 2 Stars, just because I finished it but then I changed my mind. It was disappointing and I was annoyed while reading it. I’m just sorry I didn’t check the plot summary better as i normally wouldn’t read this type of stories.
I did not realize that this was two stories older Lisa Jackson love stories until I began reading. I am a fan of Jackson's and liked the stories but they were definitely on the light side for her. The stories involve a pair of brothers whose parents were killed in a fire involving their horse barn seven years ago. The fire changed so many lives and sent the brothers in different directions. The brothers come home when their uncle passes away and meet up with their old loves. The flames ignite and both brothers find themselves unable to leave again. The stories were sweet and good light reading.
I am a huge fan of Lisa Jackson, but this book I could not finish. It didn't interest me at all and the main characters are always back and forth with each other, it was exhausting. I know she wrote this book in the 80's, but I am truly sorry to not have finished it.
This was really not my kind of book so i struggle to rate this, being a Lisa Jackson novel i was expecting at least some for of mystery or suspense and this was really a romance / almost soft core erotica book. With no real strong plot other than falling in love i found the book dull and slow, and the second book almost repetitive with just character name changed. If just reading at a slow pace about star crossed players falling in love if your jam then you will probably like this. I only rated 3 stars as the writing was well done and the characters were strongly built and written well which is about all i can really judge as i have no idea if this is a solid story line since this is so not my genre.
I have followed this author for a long time and she never disappoints me.
A little bit of mystery and romance is in this book or should I say books. What a bonus to have two stories in one novel.! You need to find out about what happens because I will not spoil it for you.. worth the read!
Backlash is a re-release of two stories put into one volume. Lisa Jackson is a fabulous author, whosebooks always have twists and turns in a little romance to keep you interested.
This is a romance that takes place on a ranch. Tessa loves Denver but when there is a fire that kills his mother and father and makes Denver have multiple operations for the scars he has left from the fire. He leaves town and doesn't return for seven years When he does return him and Tessa have many disagreements. Then later in the book there is another story of Denver's brother Colton and his romance with Cassie. Colton has been gone for seven years as well. He accuses her of many things from the past as well.
If you like romances where the guy jerks the woman around and kisses her hard you will really enjoy this book
Set on a ranch in Montana, these are two novellas featuring brothers, Denver and Colton, who leave home after a deadly fire that tears their lives apart. The bare bones of the stories are interesting in several ways - mainly the characters and the setting. Unfortunately, these were written "in the late 1980s" and are slightly dated. Beyond that they are repetitious and, in my opinion, were never completely developed.
FYI - I received a copy of this book through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
3.5 Stars Backlash is comprised of two stories, Aftermath and Tender Trap. I enjoyed these stories, the characters interaction and the second chance storylines kept me engaged throughout.
