Evvie Drake is a young widow living in a small town in Maine. A year after her husband's death, Evvie seems stuck in sadness and loneliness. To others, it seems she is deeply grieving her husband. But that is not the reason for her unhappiness. She feels guilty and inadequate. Then her best friend's childhood friend moves to town. Dean is a famous pitcher with demons of his own, and he helps Evvie become unstuck. His words to Evvie will resonate with many readers: "You wake up one day and you need a whole new plan.." This was a thoroughly satisfying read.

I enjoyed Evvie Drake Starts over but it moved rather slowly at times. I don't know why but I felt like I needed to know Evvie better as the story unfolded. I wasn't quite as invested as I wanted to be for a character-driven novel.

Evvie Drake’s life is complicated. Married to a monster that makes her think she’s the monster. We never get to know her deceased husband except through a few of her memories. Sadly, she lies to everyone she loves to protect her monster husband’s reputation (due to the psychological abuse she endured). Thankfully, Dean— the washed out athlete with his own issues, enters her life and slowly they fall in love and changes made to both of their lives = a happily ever after!

I liked how the author didn’t rush the main characters relationship. The book was well written and an enjoyable read.

Eveleth Drake will be the first to admit that she married the wrong guy. She was literally on her way out the door when she got the news. He didn’t make it. Filled with something like guilt, grief, relief even, Eveleth must begin again. And she does, first alone, and then with “Baseball Dean”. They both need a do-over. But this is not the linear love story readers have come to expect. This story is frustrating, quirky, warm, clever, fresh and hope-filled. This book is such a standout in women's fiction! It was thoroughly rewarding and pleasurable to read. One of the reasons this book is so exceptional is that it felt both riveting and comfortable. As the plot and characters develop, significant information comes to light naturally.

The main characters are outstanding because they are relatable and complex. They experience growth which seems authentic during the novel. They have relationships and friendships with strong and interesting secondary characters.

The premise of this book, which involved a young widow and her relationship with a disgraced major league pitcher, is unique and intriguing. I found the baseball references to be interesting without overweight plot. This is a must-read for anyone who enjoys romance in their novels.

Evvie is stuck and can't move past the guilt she feels about her husband's death. But the guilt is because she doesn't miss him. When her best friend Andy convinces her to let his friend, washed up baseball player Dean move in to an empty apartment at her house she has no idea the impact. Can she move past the feeling that she has no right to be happy? Can they let go of the past and build a future?

One of my favorite books I've read this year. A really fun read and you really root for the main character! Such an enjoyable book!

Thanks #netgalley #randomhouse for my free e copy of #EvvieDrakeStartsOver in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

If chick lit and romance are your genres, you might enjoy Evvie Drake Starts Over. It’s an easy and quick read with a predictable storyline that is congruent with the genre. It might be important to you to know that the writing style includes frequent swearing. When looking at other reviews, I realize that my star rating is an outlier on this one.

This is a really good book with something for almost everyone. Evvie Drake has suffered from years of her husband's emotional abuse when she decides to leave him. But on the way to her car, she receives news that he's been in an auto accident, and he dies. Over the course of the next year, she rents out part of her house to a former baseball player who's lost his ability to pitch; deals with her in-laws, her aging father, and her absent, insensitive mother; learns to communicate better with everyone; blows up and repairs friendships; falls in love; and finds happiness (and therapy). Pitched (pun intended) as a romance, this book is really a lot of genres, and I found it a particularly good abuse-recovery narrative. The baseball parts are fun, as is the small-town setting is great, and the characters develop in excellent ways. My only quibbles are: I wish the author had given Keith Olberman's mother her name instead of describing her as an offshoot of the male celebrity; and that she'd chosen another team name than "Braves" for one of the teams mentioned. We're trying to get rid of team names that are culturally insensitive, not creating more. Overall a good read.

Thank you to Net Galley for the Advanced Reader copy in exchange for my unbiased review.

Evvie's husband has just died and she is trying to figure out how to move on with her life...especially when she feels like everyone around her has completely misunderstood her marriage. This is a sweet book with a happy ending. While I would say it is a romance, I liked that the romance had substance to it. It wasn't just a lustful fling. The book had a bit too much baseball talk to me. I was able to skim over it and still understand the plot though. I would recommend this to anyone who wants an easy read and/or who needs to read about hope and a happy ending!

Evvie loses her husband and Dean loses his pitching arm. After being introduced by Evvie's best friend, they lean on each other to cope. Cute, cute story of survival, love and moving on!

I.LOVE.THIS.BOOK!

I cannot recommend it enough and have already posted about it on my other social medias for everyone can pre-order! It is set in Maine (who doesn’t LOVE New England?!) and it stars Evvie, a new widow that is very private. Her best friend sees that she needs a little extra cash and brings in his childhood friend, former baseball star, to come and stay with her. The book focuses on love, friendship, family dynamics, therapy, and most importantly, new beginnings. However, in order for new beginnings to start, you need to close old wounds and habits. I loved the characters and their interactions with each other. I was rooting for them the whole time.

I recommend Evvie Drake Starts Over to anyone looking for a feel-good read and loves contemporary romance.

This is might be my favorite NetGalley read of 2019! Ms. Holmes weaves together a wonderful story with Evvie and Dean, two well-developed and complicated characters. Even Tim, who is 'present' throughout the book gets an excellent backstory. The chemistry felt natural, and I loved the supporting cast. Overall, I loved Ms. Holmes's voice and would be happy to pick up her next novel!

3.5 stars rounded up to 4 stars for GoodReads.

If it was Dean Tenney Starts Over, it could have been five stars for me. Then Evvie would be the love interest instead of the main character. I just didn't care for or about her. I almost stopped reading the book in the beginning because her story line didn't grab me. I liked Evvie's supporting people like her dad, her BFF and his daughters, even the seaside Maine town itself.

The parts I enjoyed most were about Dean and his struggles to transition into a life without baseball. Those sections were where this book really shined. His frustrations, the scrutiny of the merciless New York media, the endless avenues of treatment to try and regain his fast ball. It reminded me of a the great writing found in a feature article in Sports Illustrated - and I loved that!. The scene with the pine cone and the scene with Dean teaching Evvie to pitch were excellent. There are enough explanations of things like "the yips" to educate a non-baseball fan enough to understand what he's working through. Dean could easily been cast as a jerk or a badboy. Instead he reaches out and makes new connections with Andrew's extended family and the community.

A witty romance that begins with a wife who is set to leave her husband when she gets a call that he has been in a car accident. A baseball pitcher for the Yankees gets the yips and needs a place to lay low. These two characters make up the story of getting your life back. Well -written, poignant story.

Evvie Drake Starts Over is a book that has it all - it’s relatable, complex, heartbreaking, witty, romantic, and heartwarming. Linda Holmes made sure you really got to know Evvie and her relationships with her deceased husband, best friend, and tenant. I loved the story, but it did take me a little bit to get into it. After about 30% in though, I was hooked!

I loved this book and will be recommending it to anyone I see this summer.
Evvie is such a like-able and complex character, and while the basic story is one that everyone's seen or read a thousand times, Linda Holmes made it seem fresh and new with realistic supporting characters, a lovely setting, and great storytelling.

Evvie Drake isn't exactly a recluse, at least not on the outside. Since her husband died the year before, she's kept her life and the people in it to a limited number. She has her best friend Andy and his daughters. She has her work. She has hundreds of books to read. She also has bills and a too-big house with an apartment, so when Andy has a friend - a former professional athlete with the yips who was forced into early retirement - looking for a place outside New York to start over, Evvie can add landlady to the list of things she does. The two both have their dark spots, their secrets, their demons that they don't quite know how to face or what to do with. They also don't quite know what to make of each other, at least at first. I thought this book was charming and thoughtful, and while a bit on the nose at times (more than a few times, I had that 'I know where this is headed' feeling), and I'd definitely read more by Holmes in the future.
