My family and students love IMAX theater movies, and this book was terrific because it teaches about how IMAX movies are made as well as about these special bears. I have a much greater appreciation for how difficult it is to film IMAX movies now!
I received this arc from NetGalley for an honest review. Lots of great information about this area that I did not even know existed. My favorite part of this book is the amazing photographs thoughout.
The Great Bear Rainforest is a book that would be great for any age reader. It is appropriate for young readers, who will enjoy all the stunning wildlife photos throughout. Adults will appreciate the scenery and the text that tells about the difficulties of making a film in a rainforest environment.
The Great Bear Rainforest is home to the spirit bear, which is a black bear with a recessive gene that causes some cubs to be born with white fur. It also helps these bears to hunt salmon since the white fur helps them blend in better with the open sky when they are standing in a stream trying to catch a fish.
The book is packed full of the most beautiful photography imaginable. There are some underwater shots that took the filmmakers enormous effort to get. Then, there are the wildlife photos. Wow! All I can say is wow, these are amazing. If you love wildlife, you simply have to get this book.
The book documents the efforts of the film crew to make an IMAX movie. Filming took place over three years in some of the most challenging conditions imaginable. The rainforest environment was tough on the equipment, and storms could cancel filming for days. Not to mention the obstacles to overcome in hauling heavy camera gear through a densely forested environment. The filmmakers invented some very creative devices to accomplish their goals and it’s all documented in this book.
There is a film that goes with the book and I hope to be able to see it one day. There is, sadly, no IMAX theater near me, so maybe I’ll get to see it. I can’t wait to see the film that came out of the work that these folks did. If the photography in this book is any example, I expect the film will be a feast for the eyes unlike any other. This book is highly recommended.
A great book! The photos are outstanding. Watch for the Great Bear
Rainforest Documentary coming soon. Ian McAllister does some
outstanding work for our bears. I really did enjoy this book immensely.
This book is billed as a children's book, but I think it is a book for anyone who is concerned about the environment, endangered species, and wants to know about filming in some rather extreme situations. This book is about the creating of an IMAX film about The Great Bear Rainforest. It took three years to make this film. In the book we learn about the ecological area, the animals that live there, the changes in the habitat over the years and how the indigenous people live and protect the area. The tidbits about the various personnel involved in the film from the camera people, the sound people up to the indigenous guides, we learn about the various jobs and how people achieved what they did. The climate causes problems, situations to overcome and some funny quotes and situations. The one animal that seems to galvanize everybody is the spirit bear. This is not an albino bear, but a recessive trait that causes the fur to be white. It actually helps the bear to hunt better. From flies and maggots all the way to grizzlies and humpback whales, every animal plays a part. This area went from being designated as a TSA (timber supply area) by the Canadian Government 25 years ago to a protected habitat today, and this book shares some of that story. I really want to see this IMAX movie someday. This book could be used in so many ways, such as learning about employment in the film industry, protecting the environment, learning about indigenous people and how they protect the environment as well as the Great Bear Rainforest Habitat. What a great introduction to so many areas of study. This would make a great addition to any school or public library.
As a Pacific Northwesterner, I absolutely love photobooks that capture the beauty of the region - and this one not only captures just how gorgeous it is up in British Columbia, but it also contains tons of fun facts about bears. Bears! Bears are awesome. Especially Spirit Bears, which are not actually albino black or brown bears, it's a recessive gene thing, like red hair. Apparently this book is a companion to an IMAX movie which I now really want to see - I haven't been up to British Columbia in forever, and now I really want to. Plus: bears! And lots of tidbits about filmmaking. and such, but hey, bears!
Loads of info and the photos are amazing! I loved learning about the Kermode Bear; I thought it was an albino, but no. Just amazing. I am glad more of the rainforest is being preserved. The hunting and logging and such, has to be stopped. I hope I can one day get up to western Canada to see the forest myself. I'm looking forward to the hardback book as I am sure the photos in the book will be stunning. great addition to a wildlife collection.
