I so enjoyed reading The Backpacking Housewife, the first book I’ve read of the series. Being taken along on Lori and Ethan’s conservation journey’s intermingled with strong family ties including time apart, longing and disputes... there is a sense of adventure, spontaneous travel, and all for love that is never really far away. It really does make London seem grey, and the monotonous 9-5 boring, whilst there is world of adventure, vibrant colours, warmer climes and a planet to save.

An easy read, that’s well written, fast paced, and mentions environmental issues relevant for now. Lori misses her family after being away for a year, falls in love and is trying to make up her mind about her love for Ethan, all shown through crazy, but courageous acts to try and secure Waterfall Cay.

This is the latest in this series but I was new to the books and story.
To summarise. Our housewife had put her career on hold to support her husband and raise the children and then he ran off with her best friend - after her finding them in her bed together.
Fed-up she filled a backpack and went on an adventure for a year or more. Working in eco-centres; helping animals in sanctuaries and eventually finding a rather dishy man who took her on his research ship as the housewife (! Irony) of the ship to cook etc. They fall in love and this part of her story begins. With nefarious brothers, idyllic islands, butterflies and adventures.
My main issue was the section at the end of the book - after all the insect life had been killed by spraying with the relevant poison, how come small green butterflies survived? So for me, the ending was trite and spoilt it.
I’m giving this 3 stars for not thinking through the ending well enough.

I really enjoyed this book. At times it was slightly far fetched but I supposed that’s what fiction is all about...

I enjoyed the environmental aspects and the family connections etc. I liked how Lori dealt with all of the emotions she was feeling.

I enjoyed the writing style and general character development! The story line was strong and coherent.

I would recommend and can’t wait to see what happens next for Lori.

I received an ARC of Janice Horton’s book 2 of her Backpacking Housewife series (thank you @NetGalley) so I started with book 1 and read both of them. Book two was just published, so now both books are available on Amazon. They are a delight.

Her first installment, TheBackpackingHousewife - It’s Time To Escape From it All - is all about Lori (a British housewife) doing just that. After walking in on her husband (of twenty years) and her very best friend (cringe), she grabs her passport and heads for the airport. She arrives in Thailand, where the adventure begins.

Although Lori is heartbroken and clearly devastated, she is also adventurous and very brave. Her spur of the moment escape turns into weeks, months, and more... She realizes that she must, somewhat reluctantly, deal with the life she left behind - in particular her two adult sons and her mom, all of whom she loves and misses very much. The husband is not missed at all.

She is gregarious and meets many amusing characters throughout her journey, many of whom are conversationalists - saving the sea turtles from bandit poachers (in book one). The theme of environmental and wildlife conservation is paramount (and fascinating!) in both the first and second book. Turtles, coral reefs, and rare butterflies are well researched and a joy to read and learn more about.

I absolutely loved both book one and the second: The Next Adventure. As well as adventure and conservation, there are traditional themes of love, relationships, romance, and above all, the importance of family.

I especially loved that even the most dreaded and difficult challenges are approached with light hearted humor. Adventurous from the start, Lori really becomes her own person; and, after finding new sparks of love, grapples with the concept of entwining her new found independence with a chance for everlasting love. The possibility of truly having it all...

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Five stars for each book (so that makes ten stars!) for fun, entertaining, easy reading which explores topics of solo adventure travel, independence, romance, love and family.

Thank you Net Galley, Harper Collins, and Janice Horton for the ARC, in exchange for my honest review...which is: have some fun, read the Backpacking Housewife books!

This story is the second book in the Backpacking Housewife series. The series wraps around the main character Lori who decides to leave her husband after a betrayal to find herself. While out in the world she gets involved in environmental protection and meets a new man.

This book was fine, but over all kinda forgettable. However this is coming from someone how did not read the first book in the series so maybe it would be better with the first book and more back story. Overall not bad but not good.

If you are looking for a lighter read - possibly a beach or vacation one - The Backpacking Housewife just may be the right choice!

This is a fun and uplifting story, as we follow Lori in deciding between continuing her life of adventure with her boyfriend, Ethan, or returning home to her mum and two grown sons.

I was a fan of the first book- Lori left her rotten husband and took off for Thailand! In this second installment, she's with Ethan, a very rich man, and hanging in the Caribbean. It has a more serious cant than the first book, as Horton asks us to think about saving the planet (but not in an overwhelming way). Lori's also a fixer - she works on Ethan's family drama, among other things. Make no mistake, this is funny and you'll like Lori, who is as grounded as you can get. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. A good read.

This is the second instalment in this series and having not read the first I was worried that I would not be able to follow the story. I need not of worried Janice Horton gives just enough background from the previous book so that you know what's happened already without detracting from this new story.

Lori and Ethan are blissfully happy but Lori is missing her family back in the UK. She is worrying about how her new life as an adventurer and her previous life as a mum will gel together. Ethan then presents her with the perfect solution (as only a ridiculously rich man can!) their very own island. Unfortunately Ethan's brother arrives to put a spanner in the works and Lori sets off on a mission to save the Island and reunite the brothers.

I really enjoyed this book. Lori is a very likeable heroine and her internal battle of mum v adventurer is very relatable. The expedition she goes on is very funny and I found myself laughing aloud in places. This is a great book for taking on holiday and reading by the pool and you never know it may inspire you to go on your own expedition!!

3.5 stars
The Backpacking Housewife: the next adventure
Release date July 5, 2019
Publisher: Harper Impulse

I was ready for something different and that’s exactly what I got. This was a pleasant little surprise. I had not read the first installment, this being a sequel to The Backpacking Housewife, nor was I familiar with the author. Going in “blind” so to speak, I expected this to be a light comedy of sorts, perhaps because of the title, but it actually wasn’t. This crosses genres, It was serious reading most of the time but easy... focusing on relationships, travel, ecology, conservation of the planet and more. I enjoyed Lori’s travel escapades, her spunk and attitude, her struggle with familial ties, and mainly I admired her tenacity when it comes to something that truly matters.

This also enlightened me about conservation issues and those committed to making a difference, while doing so in an easy flowing novel format, not like a textbook. I loved the butterfly segment of the story and the romance she found with Ethan. He’s like the perfect man, unlike the man that left Lori behind for her best friend in book 1 apparently, which was the catalyst for her packing up and heading out. As they say, sometimes a door closes and another (bigger and better) one opens. It often takes courage to go through that door and do what you really want to do, instead of what’s expected of you. Lori’s life changed drastically when the opportunity knocked and she answered. I enjoyed doing her on the journey.

My thanks to the author, the publisher and NetGalley for the free e-copy. My opinions are my own. Pick up your copy on July 5th. You may learn something and enjoy a good story in the process.

It sounds like the dream of a lifetime. Lori Anderson traded in her life as a “domestic engineer” to travel the world on a shoestring. She’s visited exotic places, met amazing people, including the man of her dreams, but she finds herself missing her family. But when she has to return home unexpectedly, she finds herself missing her idyllic days on the road. Is it a case of the grass is always greener? I enjoyed Lori’s travel escapades and could also relate to her missing her family, until she got home of course.

Far too predictable for my tastes. I love travel. I love adventure. I love reinvention and this was none of that

The Next Adventure by Janice Horton is the second book in The Backpacking Housewife series. Having not read the introduction to the series, I found myself wondering how Lori has ended up moving from a messy divorce to travelling the world with a gorgeous and wealthy fiance. The gaps are filled in quite satisfactorily as the novel progresses, however, and I felt that I was given a solid foundation for what had previously transpired.

Lori is enchanted with the life that she is living with Ethan as the pair travel the globe, and things could not be more idyllic. If only she wasn't feeling so conflicted about living a life that she loves while being apart from her family in the UK, including her two grown sons and aging mother. Will Lori find a balance between living her own best life and answering the call of familial responsibility? I am anxious to read more of this series to discover how Lori's story progresses.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Harper Impulse and Killer Reads for this ARC.
