Dead Dogs Don't Bark is a heartfelt piece from Tolu' A. Akinyemi filled with aspirations, motivations, and sarcasm. My favorite thing about this book is the multiple mentions of Nigerian cultures and how it actually being used in the poems. A lot of these poems are full of anger and passion, I can practically imagine how strong it'd sound when it's being read out loud. Unfortunately, pace-wise, it's not working for me. The inconsistency caught me off guard, as in one part, the poetry was all raging with exquisite and beautifully-chosen words, but in the next one, it was a short motivational speech that happened to be rhyme. The case with this book is that I think I'm simply not the intended target audience.
Thank you T&B Global Concepts Ltd and NetGalley for providing me with an advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review.
Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC of this book. I enjoyed all the poetry in this book. Highly recommend.
I give it 2 stars just because I personally couldn't finish it. It was too religious for my taste, but I think individuals who are into that type of thing would enjoy these poems. I was really drawn to the title and the cover, but I think that is what threw me off the scent of the theme. If you are into religious gestures this would be a book I would recommend picking up.
The poems were enjoyable but not really my style, I feel they would be good for points to raise discussion or for schools. A little simplistic for me and the poems didn’t really speak to me at all. The book is laid out well and into good categories and subsections to help you pick parts to read when you want. Interesting, but not my particular style.
