What a cracking debut book, this author is going to go a long way. I loved all of the characters in this book and the descriptions by the author gave me a really clear picture of them making the book all the more enjoyable.
Battersea, London. Dulcie, who's only way to keep a roof over her head is to prostitute is Jack's mum, Jack is a small-time crook thieving/pickpocketing anything he can get his hands on to sell. Jacks wife Cissy dies giving birth to a little girl named Georgina. Georgina is hungry so Dulcie rescues Ruby from the slums and prostituting to wet nurse Georgina. Dulcie is married to Percy although not Jack's father Percy is a bullying drunken layabout.
Norman Wilcox is the local face he's quite fair but also violent. His son Billy is a similar age to Georgina but even at a young age is a twisted, sadistic bully with whom Geroge has many a run in. When his father "dies", he takes over the reins of his father's empire much to the fear of the local neighbourhood. Georgina though is not scared of him.
When as a small child Georgina is kidnapped by Ruby's pervert father the memories of what he did to her as a child are too much for her to bear and end in devastation.
With the help of Norman Wilcox, Jack rescues Georgina, but it's too late she is alive but bound & gagged hidden in the wardrobe of Ruby's dad with her underwear missing and blood on her thighs.
Move forward a few years, after the kidnap and assault which she doesn't remember her dad who, terrified by her ordeal insists Georgina is now to be known as George and wear boys clothes, she now goes out thieving with her dad who is also teaching her to protect herself by boxing.
She makes friends with Molly a girl from the slums whose father is a violent slob beats their mother for pleasure and spends her wages getting drunk so Molly, her mother, and 2 sisters one who has a young mind for her age .live in terrible poverty and are always hungry and cold.
As George grows she is sad to see the women of Battersea being beaten and abused by their husbands and men. With Molly, she comes up with an idea to teach the women to box but as it is held in the local church hall has to be under the guise of a craft club and so The maids of Battersea is born.
Billy is a constant threat to the community and after raping and impregnating Molly is forced to marry her by the mother he idolises and Molly's mother. Her life couldn't get any worse.
Great story. Thank you NetGalley for the opprotunity xx
A different read to ones typically of this ilk as in the decade in which it is set. I enjoyed this side to it and enjoyed the prevalence of strong female characters. I am imagining there will be future books in the series and look forward to reading these.
I ARC received via NetGalley and in exchange for an honest review.

This was a good read looking forward to the next book.
This book appealed to me from the description and I must admit it gripped me from page one right through - I’m. notI going to reveal the storyline but all I can say is I was totally hooked by the characters and so many unexpected twists and turns just loved it. I would highly recommend but make sure you have got time to read it - lucky for me I was on holiday so uninterrupted pleasure and really did not wish to finish it. Try it you won’t regret it and I a, waiting patiently for the next best seller from this author.
Oh my goodness, Sam Michaels what have you done to me, I was a quivering wreak throughout this book, what an utterly amazing, outstanding read Trickster was, the whole story was filled with action all the way through, I loved every single minute of this book and is so very highly recommended and can't wait for the next series.
Sam Michaels you are an absolute genius and a truly amazing find!!
I was absolutely hooked from page one.
Georgina is born in a rough area and her mother dies in childbirth. She is raised as a boy by her father, to protect her, he thinks, who's an accomplished thief and her grandmother. Her father teaches her his thieving ways and she's soon as accomplished as he is!
But life isn't kind to Georgina, and is often cruel and unjust!
I couldn't put Trickster down and it definitely deserves more than five stars!
Please tell me there's another one soon!
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for allowing me to read this arc.
