This was a tough one for me because I had a really hard time getting through the first half since I hated the primary narrator Robert so much. So I read the reviews on Goodreads, which were pretty glowing, and thus I persevered. I liked the second half of this novel much more than the first half, in part because different narrators shared their accounts of events.

Thanks to NetGalley for the opportunity to review this book, which RELEASES JUNE 11, 2019.

This read like the first draft of what might have been a good novel. There were just way too many loose ends, a ridiculous excuse for an investigation, and way too many unbelievable actions and reactions.

Thank you to netgalley and the published/author for this arc in exchange for my honest review.

I’m still not sure what to say in this review. This book is different than anything I’ve ever read before. Unique but not entirely likeable characters. There was never a moment where I had this book figured out. That’s for sure.

A slow start or burn, but by the ending my mouth was open in shock about what just happened. Everyone keeps secrets should be the byline or mantra of this story, and boy are these some huge secrets. My feelings for everyone at the beginning of the book are not the same at the end and I am still trying to figure out how I feel about all of the little surprises that are shared, accurate or not! This story is told through multiple POV and that builds to atmosphere of the story and also how secrets are made, kept and potentially shared. Caroline Louise Walker has created a very intricate world where everyone has their own lives and feelings, but are also still paying attention to what others have and are doing. Through showcasing private conversations, big events, small moments and more the question and idea about “what is see is not the whole story” or “you never know what someone else is dealing with behind that smile” becomes very relevant and accurate. Well done and thought-provoking read.

Thank you NetGalley, Caroline Louise Walker and Gallery books for the chance to share my opinion and read this book!

I loved this book about a man who had everything and how little he knew about any of it.
This book contained excellent writing and pacing, many surprising character twists, and an ending that leaves he reader (left me, anyway) still questioning which reality was real.

Dr. Robert Hat has just been named Man of the Year.  His life is going well - nice house, beautiful new wife, good career, and his son is back on track.  His son's troubled friend is in need of housing, so they invite him to stay in their guest house.

Soon, the doctor doesn't seem so good anymore.  He suspects something, which leads to a scandal that he covers up with lies.  He's not trusting anyone.

This book got off to a slow start for me, but I kept going to figure out what happened.  I did not like any of the characters.  They were all terrible people.  It was hard to finish because I was not rooting for any of them.  Also, there were added lines to characters' backgrounds that I didn't think were necessary and just gave characters more to ramble on about.  I did finish, and I did not see a lot of it coming.  The book at least has that going for it.

It’s rare for me to finish a book and say, “I did NOT see that coming.” But I did not see that coming. At all. I made a lot of assumptions and at one point I even thought they were right. They weren’t.

One minute I was rooting for the main character c the next his wife, then his son or his son’s friend. My loyalty shifted many times, and in the end I still don’t know who I believe or like.

Man of the Year will keep you guessing and thinking you know what’s going to happen, but you don’t. This is a masterfully plotted and written suspense novel.

I didn't see a lot of this coming and that always makes it fun, doesn't it?

I couldn’t stop readiing this book- so many twists and turns - I feel like I have to take notes on all the different lies that were told to be sure I understood the ending- And yes it reminded me of The Dinner

This book did not go as I thought it would. I expected to dislike the main character, but found that my feelings of dislike were much stronger for his wife and son. They just seemed self-absorbed and unappreciative of everything they had received from their life with Robert. Anyhow, the twists in the story were really well done; I truly did not expect the ending at all! Nice job. I want to thank netgalley and Simon & Schuster for the free advance proof copy in return for a fair review.

this is a hard book to review. The author is great, I was constantly wondering what wierd character was going to surface and how they would be entwined into this mess. Every time I thought I might have things figured out I was set up for a new surprise. The ending is still making me wonder who is telling the truth. Very good read. Thanks.

There are way too many detours in this crazy drama to begin to describe Dr. Robert Hart’s life. I figured out none of them.

The cast of characters also includes his wife, Elizabeth, his son, Jonah, Jonah’s friend, Nick, and others. All fragile, all believable, all not necessarily likable.

Mixed into the story are lies, cheating, secrets not told, and a death.

Thank you to NetGalley and to Ms. Walker for the opportunity to read and review this solid, page-turner. I enjoyed it immensely and recommend it to my reading friends.

#manoftheyear #netgalley

"I am a rational man, capable of seeking sustained relief by inflicting prolonged pain." It would be an understatement to call Robert Hart a psychopath, but he surely is. "Man of the Year" was painful to read, like watching a train wreck and you can't look away as this "family" hurtles towards disaster of epic proportions. A mind is a terrible thing in the hands of a narcissist like Dr. Hart. Nick, the young man who comes to stay in Hart's guest house for the summer, doesn't stand a chance. And sadly, Jonah, Hart's son, learns at his father's knee. Ouch.

P.S. Thanks to Net Galley for the digital review copy. (less)

Thank you to Netgalley and St Martin's for an advanced copy in return for an honest review. I'm giving this one 4.5 ⭐. It was a quick read and definitely held my attention. I was for sure wrong about everything, but even after that last page, I'm still sitting here wondering who is telling the truth. My only complaint about the book is with the exception of the end, they didn't tell you who was talking. There were a few times I'd be a couple pages in before i figured out who was talking. Still a good book. I would recommend it.

Robert suspected his wife of cheating and heads down a very destructive path.

Masterful story telling, I felt like I was seeing through Roberts eyes. My mouth fell open a few times. Not a fast thriller, but a devastating one. That’s for sure.

I was so excited when I saw this sign out shopping today. I’m starting to have ZERO shame about taking awkward book photos in public. -
I just finished Man of the Year by @carolinelouisewalker, thanks to @netgalley. This thriller (which comes out in June) tells the story of Dr. Hart, who was just named Man of the Year in his Long Island town, is trying to decipher the mystery of his wife having an affair with his son’s friend. While looking so closely for these clues, he’s missing out on a lot of other things going on around him. -
I really liked Caroline’s writing and I flew through this one. Hopefully there’s more to come from her soon!

Our Man of the Year is Robert Hart, MD. He's a narcissist, but is also paranoid and jealous. The book is mostly narrated from his point of view, although for some reason it seemed more of a woman's point of view than a man's (maybe because the author is female?). There were also several chapters interwoven that were confusing and didn't add anything to the book, except maybe the last couple of chapters.

I struggled to finish this book. It wasn't captivating and I was often confused about what was going on, especially when all of a sudden you get a chapter written in the first person by some random character. The twists at the end were anti-climatic and I didn't feel like the author did enough research to make this book feel more realistic since there were a lot of errors in the location and investigative process.

“Man of the Year” by Caroline Louise Walker immediately grabbed me with its biting honest narrative. Sag Harbor has just honored Dr. Robert Hart as the Man of the Year. His entire community looks up to him (or at least they act as if they do). It looks like he has it all. How far will he go to keep it? As if sensing things aren’t always what they seem to be, Dr. Hart becomes increasingly paranoid.

“Man of the Year” hammers home the principle that honesty is always the best policy. But what if the truth isn’t what you think it is?

The webs characters weave based on insecurity, lies, and betrayal will shock you “Man of the Year” was paced and plotted perfectly. Caroline Walker used the first-person point of view better than any author I have ever read. She pulled us into the minds of the characters, one at a time, breaking the “rules” with such boldness, craft, and purpose. And, it was beautiful! This book was every bit as intriguing as the sales page promised. I devoured it in 2 days.

Now for the blush factor…The characters in "Man of the Year" tend to curse a lot. I would never want to hang out with these characters, but I sure enjoyed reading about them. They were real and relatable. This novel is every bit as suspenseful and thought-provoking as the movie, “Fatal Attraction” (which, ironically, is mentioned in this book when one character refers to another as a “bunny boiler”). If you enjoy psychological suspense with complex characters and great plot twists, you will love "Man of the Year."

Man of the Year deserves the full 5 stars!

I really disliked the characters. Lying, egocentric, entitled, false.... was almost DNF. But persevered and was pleased I did. The last section saved the novel, was a good final perspective.

I received an ARC from NetGalley and publisher Simon and Schuster in exchange for my honest review.

I stayed up late last night to finish this book for two reasons. One of those reasons, was to finally discover what actually happened, The second reason was to simply get to the end! I found all of the characters lacking in substance. Their priorities and moral compasses were skewed. I could not find one redeeming quality in any one of them. One of the last chapters, where Elizabeth is rambling, yes rambling, was mind numbing. This book is disturbing to me on many levels. On another note, and this may sound pernickety, it’s questionable that an internal medicine practitioner, in Sag Harbor, without any other sources of income, could live the way the Hart’s lived, in today’s day and age of medicine. Thank you Netgalley and Gallery Books for the opportunity to read and review this ARC.
