So here is the deal. I am dealing with this exact thing. I took in my sons best friend who is a teenager who has been through more than any child should go through and while we thought he was doing ok little by little we realized he needed more help than just a family counselor to give. Then he ran away and started with behaviors we just could not get under control. So his counselors suggested TFC (therapeutic foster care).
So now he is in TFC and this book popped up on NetGally and how could I not grab it? It was serendipitous. So I have read this book in the hopes it can make a difference when my bonus-son comes home.
The book is laced with humor and from almost page one I connected with exactly what the author has gone through herself. This is not a lecture in paper form, it is writing to tell you others are going through it too.

a good book for people starting off as foster or adoptive parents of teenagers. It covers how early childhood trauma impacts on teenage struggles and how to support teenagers who have experienced early childhood trauma. A good book for training new carers.

As a mom with a growing family and a new teenagers I am in need of anything help I can find. The author gives parents of those with adopted, biologically, and foster teens and why they their reaction seem to come out of no where.

As a mother there are times I wonder does my child hate me? Does he think I have zero feelings or why does he lash out at me for the simplest request.

This book has wisdom that will help parents in all walks of life better understand as well as a way to better communicate with their children.

The author has wonderful insight that will give thought provoking.

Thank you to Netgalley and the Publisher for the advance copy of Sally Donovan The Unofficial Guide to Therapeutic Parenting

It's a nice parenting book. Honestly, I did not find anything drastically different in this book compared to other ones on this topic.

Parenting teens is a minefield. It’s very much an open book. Reading this I felt I could take a lot from it to put into practice. Anything that builds relationships with your teens is a winner

As a foster/adoptive parent of teenagers, I would like to believe my parenting is therapeutic. At moments though, I wonder why I do this because it can be both very painful and very rewarding. This book is the first book I have read that really understands those moments.
