A charming book, and would make a lovely project for children. Many of the butterflies were not familiar to me (in the UK), but nevertheless good to see new ones. Sadly as I had only a digital copy for review, I was unable to test the flying capabilities. A great idea though!
Thanks to the publisher for a digital review copy.
Lovely interactive book of butterflies you can cut out and use for all sorts of fun projects. I really enjoyed cutting these butterflies out with my niece- we punched a hole and tied string on the tops of butterflies to create a mobile for her room. Great book for an afternoon of fun!
Beautiful Press-out Flying Butterflies takes paper airplanes to a whole new level. By following the simple instructions on the first page, you and your child can create a squadron of brightly colored, detailed butterflies. Each of them has information as to where in the world that particular butterfly lives as well as interesting facts.
Not all butterflies eat the same nectar. For example, the Julia butterfly can be found from Brazil to Texas and Florida but in the summer migrates to Nebraska. It usually eats nectar from the Lantana flowers, but also alights on caiman’s heads (relatives of crocodiles) irritates the caiman’s eyes with their proboscis then drinks the tears. That is one brave butterfly!
Each page will teach your child about butterflies. Then with a few simple folds and a coin (to help balance your butterfly when it soars, your child will spend countless hours flying them indoors and outside.
Merrill dedicates his book to his late grandfather, Dr. A. I. Good, who was an avid lepidopterist (butterfly expert). Thanks to Dr. Good’s inspiration, we can all learn about and enjoy butterflies with this enchanting book.

While paper airplanes are a classic childhood joy, Beautiful Press-Out Flying Butterflies creates a whole new playing field. Imagine creating actual, flying butterflies from a book. Now you don’t need to imagine!
This book provides punch out patterns for over 20 different butterflies from around the world. These pieces get assembled around a coin to provide weight to the model, resulting in flight that mimics genuine butterflies once released into the air. How delightful! And there is such a variety of butterflies to choose from. I work with butterflies for a living, and there were butterflies in this book that even I had not heard of before. Each pattern comes with information about the natural history of the butterfly, including the location, habitat, diet, and behavior in an easy to digest paragraph. And the colors! Absolutely stunning!
Having raised thousands of some of the butterflies featured in this book, I can say that while the images are not 100% accurate, they are so close and such minor details that I only noticed because I have seen so many. I recommend for anyone who has children or loves butterflies as a new way to appreciate paper crafts.

Original nicely presented craft book
Richard Merrill’s Beautiful Press-Out Flying Butterflies is an initiative twist on paper planes. Perfect for an older child to complete on their own, or a younger one with the help of an adult the butterflies are beautiful. Please note this is definitely a craft/art book not an informational book about different butterflies.
I received an advance reader via Netgalley.
Kids love to play with paper airplanes, so how can they resist flying paper butterflies? I think some of them would also enjoy reading the details about each butterfly. Nice job.
This book has not only those butterflies familiar to us who live in North America but also some from other parts of the world. The directions seem simple but may require an adult to supervise, depending in child’s level of ability. Only aspect that is missing is actual labels with names on each butterfly but a little information on them that would help in better understanding for everyone involved.
I received an arc from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
This book contains 24 different butterflies that have all been turned into a one-size-fits-all flying model. All you need to do is press out the butterfly, fold it as shown in the book, put some tape and a nickel on it and try flying it like a paper airplane! Unfortunately I received only an e-copy of this book so I can't easily press out the butterflies to try it out and see how they work. The butterflies in this book all are truly beautiful and there is even information on some of the butterflies along with their press-out pages.
A fun activity for that nature lover in your life. They all are so pretty and I'm sure would be a ton of fun to have flying around the house!
I received a free e-copy of this book in order to write this review. I was not otherwise compensated. This book will be released February 13, 2019 from Dover Publications.
Five stars! A gorgeous pictorial assemblage of butterflies found around the globe. And to boot, you can pop them out and make 3D crafts. Each offering includes interesting information about the butterfly pictured along with instructions for creating the dimensional version. Tape, nimble fingers, the ability to read and follow instructions, and a nickel are all you need to make your butterflies come to (almost) life.
