Allegra is a Princeton graduate and young banker on Wall Street. Early in her career she decides that she wants to give it all up and become a yoga teacher but needs to wait on her six figure bonus before "retiring." I really enjoyed reading this book - hilarious but also touching at times look at the life of a banker. The only thing I had to really get over was the author's overuse of "the F word." I would have enjoyed it much more without this! But - don't let this prevent you from reading this great summer book!

Allegra Cobb is a second-year analyst at a top-tier bank in Manhattan, working 100-hour weeks and dreaming of when she gets her end of year bonus and can quit to teach yoga, who meets a yoga mega-influencer who sees potential in her. Torn between her desire to make her beloved dad proud and her desire to do what she really loves, Allegra finds herself succeeding at nothing and more stressed than ever.
This was a surprise hit for me! Allegra’s voice is darkly funny and I found myself frequently chuckling out loud at her one-liners. The horrific work-life environment reminded me of all the worst parts of residency training. Vivid, quirky side characters and a sweet romance along with Allegra’s dry wit made this a winner for me. It’s mostly a story about Allegra finding herself, and I was happy to go along for the ride. The Devil Wears Prada for today’s twentysomething. I’m excited to see what Madeleine Henry writes next!

Things I hate or have no interest in: finance, Wall Street, being Instagram famous.
With that said, I loved this book. I found the story of overworked financial analyst Allegra hoping to hold out and cash in on her huge end of year bonus to fund her yoga teaching dreams to be fantastic. Madeleine Henry had me hooked from the first chapter.
I really enjoyed overachiever Allegra's journey to find balance between Wall Street and the life of a yoga instructor and her attempts to navigate Instagram fame like her idol and new friend Skylar. I thought the dialogue was great, the situations realistic, and I was always rooting for Allegra even though I did not understand her life at all.
I am looking forward to future work by this author.
Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley.com for my advance reader copy.

This was an easy, entertaining read. Definitely reminds me of a refreshed version of Devil Wears Prada. I could definitely relate to the main character, Allegra and her feelings about her banking job. Side bonus, you learn a lot about yoga reading this book. Thank you NetGalley for my ARC.

Breathe In, Cash Out follows the career of banking analyst, Allegra Cobb. Allegra is a recent Princeton graduate working as a second year analyst at a top=tier bank. Henry goes into detail about Allegra's stressful job and her description is mind numbing. The most enticing part of Allegra's profession is her annual bonus. Allegra plans to leave banking and pursue teaching yoga full time. She is thrilled to connect with a famous Instagram yoga superstar who wants to partner with her. Yet after that meeting Allegra's life goes from bad to worse. This novel is full of interesting characters and a unique story line. A definite must read for Yoga lovers!

This was an easy read, which I was appreciative of. I didn't nessecarily love it, but by no means hated it. I'm 35, a married mother of 3, and I feel this is something I would have read at22, before children. Was certainly entertaining.

I really enjoyed this one! It was so readable, and although somewhat predictable with a few characters that felt a little like caricatures, I raced through it. Loved Tripp and all of the insidery i-banking/hedge fund details.

Hi! I thought this was a great summer read.
I read it almost all in one sitting.
I could have had about 100 less of the word "f$%k" in the first 1/2 of the book and I thought the hospital scene was underwritten but overall I really loved it.
Thank you!

A yogi amongst Wall Street tyrants makes for a cute engaging novel that makes you love and hate the players.

A saucy sarcastic novel about surviving your current life situation, driving for a new one, and finding yourself along the way. NYC bankers and yogis don’t necessarily mix, especially in the same body, but Allegra is trying to figure it out and become who she’s meant to be. A cast of characters helps her along the way and will leave you gasping in surprise and laughing as well. A fun read that will have you wanting more.

Madeleine Henry’s Breathe In, Cash Out is a charming, laugh-out-loud story that had me hooked from page one! Allegra is so relatable to me, someone who also has a high-stress job (though my job is nothing compared to this one! I was exhausted just reading about how tired she is). The characters in this book are wonderful—trust me, this is a read-in-a-day book if you are able to!
Allegra works in the finance industry, and her job is INTENSE. She is expected to be available 24/7, and most of that time is spent in the office. But Allegra only has to make it 2 more months until she hits her two year mark and gets her bonus—money that will help her live for a few years as she pursues her true passion, teaching yoga.
And just as Allegra is thinking about how to transition out of this high-pressure world she has lived in for so long into the zen world of yoga, an unlikely source offers to help her get started. Skylar is a yoga super star and Allegra has followed her since before she was famous. Allegra loves the thoughtful writing that Skylar posts with each thing. She’s the real deal!
Skylar noticed Allegra at a yoga competition she won a year or so before, and found Allegra’s poses breathtaking. When Allegra talks to Skylar about her plan, she offers to help her begin to let go of her high stress job. If only it were that easy! Allegra has recently slept with a man who turned out to be her boss, got staffed on a project requiring her to stay in the office around the clock even on the weekends, and is trying to avoid letting her coworkers know she doesn’t plan to stay in finance, lest it impact her bonus.
When I say this book is laugh-out-loud, I mean it! Starting at the beginning, her wit and humility is charming. From the description, you wouldn’t think a straight-A Princeton grad working in finance would be remotely likable or relatable, but Allegra is. She comes from a blue-collar family, and she always worked hard to make her dad proud. When she got to Princeton, she got caught up in the flow of students heading to big financial and consulting firms, because that is what was expected.
But two years later and Allegra is DONE. One thing I loved about her is that she is a character who doesn’t care about the power, success, and money that comes with her status she’s achieved. Allegra has all of the skills and work ethic to be a successful hedge fund manager or banker, she just doesn’t have the desire to do it. Allegra went with the flow, but she is a woman who is meant to carve her own path.
I don’t want to spoil where the plot heads in this book, but I’ll say following Allegra’s last two months in finance as she prepares for her major transition to teaching yoga is fascinating! I couldn’t wait to find out more, and Allegra is a character I miss now that I’ve finished the book.
But there are many well-created characters here! I loved Allegra’s deskmates, Tripp, Chloe, and Puja. Each had a unique personality and they were truly supportive of each other. And then there is Mark, who Allegra sleeps with one day after a yoga class, not realizing he is her new boss. Mark is such an interesting person! I could go on and on about the people that work at Anderson Shaw with her, but I won’t bore you now because you should go read it. I’ll also say that the yoga characters she meets, Skylar in particular, have their own vibe. It is quite the mash-up seeing yoga next to finance, but that combination is inspired by the author’s own passions! No wonder this book has an authenticity that is rare to find in many books.
Madeleine Henry is a wonderful writer, and I hope this isn’t the last book we get from her! This book is a gem, and one I will be reading again!
Thank you to Atria Books for my copy. Opinions are my own.

Allegra Cobb always strived for the top tier. Princeton for college, exceptional internship and now the fast track as an analyst at an esteemed bank in Manhattan. The days and nights are long as Allegra pastes on a fake smile and creates useless material for ungrateful bosses. The high of attaining any goals she once had disappear from sustained exhaustion, fear and repeating the word team as many times as possible. The only rainbow in sight is the pot of gold on bonus day and as Allegra enters the last phase before her pod mates are handed their fate she decides it is time to follow her heart and wake to a job she has long coveted; to become a yoga instructor. As she secretly prepares with a wily coach named Skylar, Allegra learns more about the pursuit of real happiness than any follow on instagram could possibly reveal. Fall in love with Allegra and this laugh out loud glimpse into the fast paced world of Wall Street with just a sprinkle of romance and a lot of heart. Perfect for a day at the beach! This debut author is most certainly one to watch.

I was asked to review Breathe In, Cash Out because of my love for The Devil Wears Prada. I'm glad I gave this one a chance. It's a nice refresher to have a book that reminds you of a book you've enjoyed without trying to be a copycat version of it.
This story introduces us to Allegra - a banking analyst during the day and...well a banking analyst during the night too because the job has you working 24/7 with the only benefit being how much money you can make during bonus time. Allegra has dreams of walking away from her banking life after 2 years to become a yoga teacher. She did win a big yoga competition back in the day before banking took over her life after all. So imagine her surprise when an Instagram yoga influencer reaches out to her and becomes what Allegra believes will be her ticket to the yoga world.
While I enjoyed this book, I would not describe it as "laugh-out-loud funny" - it's more entertaining. I do recommend for fans of the Devil Wears Prada mindset. You know - the people who work so hard but dream of their ticket out of there to a "better life." I know I do everyday.

This book definitely exceeded my expectations. It was cute, yet witty and smart with lots of humor built in. It gives you insight on finding your happiness and making that happen. I loved the main character! Sometimes with books like this, I loathe the characters that "have it all" but yet can never be satisfied. This did not deliver this way! Henry did a great job of making the character likeable and the plot did not drag on. Its speckled with finance business terms and mixed with yogic practice. Interesting combo. I loved it!

Thank you for providing a copy of this to read! Below is my honest opinion.
Breathe In, Cash Out is the story of a young investment banker who really would rather leave the frantic, demanding work life at Anderson Shaw. Instead, she wants to become a yoga instructor who has a meaningful life. This story is what happens during the last couple of months at a big investment bank as Allegra tries to transition into the yoga world full time while maintaining and enduring the end of her investment banking career.
The book is mostly lighthearted. There's some humor but nothing that is groundbreaking. This is a chick lit novel for millennials. Allegra is early to mid-twenties and is still trying to figure out who she will be as an adult. There is definitely adult language and situations, so this isn't a good one for younger readers.
Entertaining but not profound. A nice debut novel.

What a fun book! I worked in a corporate technical environment and I just may have worked for someone similar :) You can feel the work pressure through her words and completely understand the desire to get away but not lose that last bonus! Would definitely recommend for summer reading.

I really enjoyed “Breathe In, Cash Out.” It was a quick read and so descriptive and well-written that I felt like I had been at the office for 3 days straight, living off stolen naps in the bathroom and stolen snacks from the floor refrigerator. It was a fascinating peek into the world of high-pressure banking and finance as well as Instagramable yoga. I’d love to see a sequel with more Tripp! I’d recommend it as a great beach read.

A quick and enjoyable read about finding one's balance in life, career, and love. Many will be able to relate to the desire to follow his/her own passions while not wanting to disappoint their #1 fans -- parents.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Beyond amazing I enjoyed this book so very much. The characters and storyline were fantastic. The ending I did not see coming Could not put down nor did I want to.

Delightful first novel that clearly defines what many of us have lived thru. We go to work everyday, trying to climb that corporate pyramid and realize at some point that this may not be the life you should be living. The corporate world owns you, damaged relationships, and turns people into exhausted robots. Allegra is Princeton educated and working in the financial world... her parents dream for her. The author cleverly weaves in the monotony, the round the clock on call, lost weekends, working on projects never seen by a client,..all with the hopes of reaching that next rung on the ladder. I felt such anxiety and being of the age on the other side of the career track feel like I would do things so differently.if I had the chance. Allegra’s passion is yoga. She is waiting for that annual bonus so she can chuck it all and chase that dream. I was rooting for her, but unsure where I felt she should go! Who goes to Ivy League school to do yoga? Do we live life as mapped out or dare to follow our dreams? Great book that was completely enjoyable. I will definitely look forward to more from Madeleine Henry! Thank you to Atria Books for this opportunity.to read an early copy. Do you follow your heart and find out 10 years later you blew it? Can a 20 year old clearly make that decision?
