The Painted Word: Mixed Media Lettering Techniques is a guide to mixed media techniques which incorporate lettering along with painting, collage, calligraphy, and found materials in decorative projects.

Released 28th Jan 2019 by Originally published on my blog: Schiffer, it's 128 pages and available in paperback format. Author Caitlin Dundon is a Seattle based calligrapher, artist, and educator.

This is an accessible, well photographed book full of ideas which could be incorporated into journaling, wall-art, furniture refinishing, cards, and more. The introductory chapter (about 10% of the page content) covers materials and supplies, different media, substrates, found materials and more.

The rest of the chapters provide inspiration and loosely guided tutorials for using a variety of techniques to create finished artwork. The selected projects are attractive if not electrifying. I must say that the author's lessons on resist lettering and use of gesso for texture included some tips of which I was previously unaware.

The final chapter includes a resource list with links slanted toward readers in North America followed by a short index.

Three and a half stars.

The Painted Word Mixed Media Lettering Techniques by Caitlin Dundon is a fun book that walks you through an assortment of projects that use lettering. It would be well suited for a homeschooling family, craft loving kids, or adults looking to get in touch with their creative sides. The book features a variety of projects with step-by-step directions and color photographs. These are simple projects.

All in all, this is a good book if you're looking for some fun and simple art projects for rainy or snowy days -- with kids or on your own. You don't need to have tons of artistic talent or tons of money to do the projects, and you're likely to end up with some cheerful artwork to display or give as a gift.

I received a digital ARC of this book from Schiffer Publishing Ltd. via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

The Painted Word by Caitlin Dundon will help you create collages with all of your favorite words and sayings. Detailed instructions and lots of photographs explain a wide range of different techniques using found or stamped or stenciled letters to. Whatever thought you want to get out onto
a piece of unique artwork, this will show you how to do it. (Although it's worth nothing that all of the projects are on flat surfaces.)

I really love this book! Though I am very much a crafter, I've never been a very good painter. This book could very well change that. There are so many step by step examples of how to put written word on to canvas. The instructions are clear and let you know exactly what type of paint to use when and where. That's not to say you can't be creative with your project, just to say if you're someone like me who needs a little guidance, you'll know exactly what to do. The author also offers many different ways to get the word on canvas as well; stamping, printing, painting, magazines and so much more. If you are looking for a painting with words book, this is THE book!

This is a simple, fun book that walks you through an assortment of projects that use lettering. It would be well suited for a homeschooling family, craft loving kids, or adults looking to get in touch with their creative sides.

The book features an assortment of projects with step-by-step directions and color photographs. Most of them involve few supplies and no expensive ones, which I really appreciate. The author says in the beginning that basically all you need are either watercolor paper or wood to use as your surface, gesso, and generally paint (acrylic most often) and an inexpensive paintbrush. Some of the projects do use other materials, but many of them just use those.

These are simple projects and that can be a plus or minus. If you're experienced with this kind of thing, you're not likely to be impressed. However, if you're just starting then it's likely to give you some fun and easy inspiration and the instructions to do some nice projects.

Examples of projects-- Use stamps to stamp words on tissue paper, use gesso to glue it onto a painted surface where you've painted a heart and there are different areas of color, paint over it with watered down acrylic and kind of wash that out and into other areas. Paint over a surface with acrylic and use the end of a paintbrush or something similar to write in the paint for a subtle 3D quote. Trace printed letters onto your surface, sand different areas, and use a variety of paints and stencils to have a multi-media look.

Another plus for some folks is that you don't need to have great handwriting to do most of the projects, since many of them use printed, stamped or traced words.

All in all, this is a good book if you're looking for some fun and simple art projects for rainy or snowy days -- with kids or on your own. You don't need to have tons of artistic talent or tons of money to do the projects, and you're likely to end up with some cheerful artwork to display or give as a gift.

I read a digital ARC of this book for the purpose of review.

Disclaimer: I was provided with an electronic download of this book by NetGallery, in exchange for a fair and honest review.

While this has lovely photos of the techniques, I didn't find anything truly new and unique compared to many other art/crafting books about lettering and art journals.

I doubt that I will purchase to add to my already extensive library.

This book is bursting with ideas and inspiration. It includes a variety of creative lettering methods and is full of wonderful quotes. I Loved looking at the different projects and although I don't want to copy any of them, they have given me brilliant ideas for projects of my own. The instructions are fully illustrated with broke down steps and the book itself is a joy to look at. Thank you
