”Gravity no longer pulled my body to the earth. It pulled me toward her. Always to her.”
I would technically rate this book 4.5/4.75 stars, but I enjoyed the romance so much that I’ve decided I won’t be picky with my rating. Wow. This book snuck up on me in the best possible way. I don’t even know when I fell in love with it? It just hit me out of nowhere that I was in love with Bone and Xander. I was excited to read their book for many reasons, but I honestly didn’t think I was going to love it this much. I wasn’t sure what to expect from these two because they had never met in the previous book, Darkest Heart. Their dynamic was unknown to me. I was pleasantly surprised to discover just how well they fit together as a couple. I should point out that this book actually stands alone quite well, but I think readers would have a more enriching reading experience if they read the previous two books, especially the historical prequel. I've never read the prequel, but it does indeed tie to this book. I'll pick it up sometime later this year.
I loved everything about Bone and Xander. I loved them as individual characters and as a couple. They were beautifully flawed characters who managed to find each other. There is a lot of sexual tension between them and I love how their dynamic evolved throughout the book. Xander was such a charming hero and he worked so hard to coax Bone's teasing nature. The banter was fun, sexy, and natural; it didn't feel forced at all. There wasn't too much angst involved even though Bone and Xander had their own personal demons haunting them. I especially love Bone’s character arc; it was so poignant and so beautifully written. The climax was one of the best things I’ve ever read – it was exciting, emotional, and very creative. Often I find that romance authors have run out of ideas when it comes to writing climaxes, but Juliette Cross did a fantastic job here.
To be honest, I don’t really have any major complaints. The war between Angels and Demons is still ongoing. My only complaint: we weren’t told if the events in this book had a big impact on the war, especially in London. I’m also assuming that the conflict related to Vladek will be continued in the next book (if there is a next book). I’m desperately hoping Uriel’s story is next (hopefully with Nadya). So yea, just small unresolved matters that are connected to the overarching plot. They don’t really take away from the book itself though, which is why I’m not being picky about my rating.
4.75 stars--HARDEST FALL is the second instalment in Juliette Cross’ post-apocalyptic, dystopian DOMINION fantasy, romance series focusing on the fight for control and power- the Great War- between Heaven and Hell. This is demoness/former seraph Bone, and demon Xander’s story line. HARDEST FALL can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story line is revealed where necessary. Bone was first introduced in book one-Darkest Heart.
Told from dual first person perspectives (Xander and Bone) HARDEST FALL follows the building relationship between demoness/former seraph Bone, and demon Xander, and the ongoing war between Heaven and H*ll. Bone, the former angel, has an affinity to metal, and as such, is the creator of some of the most specialized weapons in the war between Heaven and H*ll but as a former Seraph, Bone also has a gift of song that heals, as well as influences those she wants to control. When high demon Dommiel brings a broken and battered demon into her private lair, Bone is asked to help save the life of the man with whom she will fall in love. Enter Xander, aka Alexander Godfrey the once human rake of Victorian England, and a demon who sides with the Angels and the human resistance fighters known as the Twelvers. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Xander and Bone, and the potential fall-out as Bone is commanded (or forced) to build a secret weapon for demon Prince Rook, a weapon whose power could destroy them all.
The relationship between Xander and Bone finds our hero falling for the demoness that calls to his heart. Bone refuses to take sides in a war between Heaven and H*ll but a war that pushes our heroine to side with the man she loves, and the people he will die to protect. The Sex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.
HARDEST FALL is a story of good vs evil; Heaven vs H*ll; love vs hate. Bone and Xander struggle with sins of the past, sin that resulted in the demonic changes to our leading couple. The premise is inviting, complex and intense; the romance is seductive and spicy; the characters are sassy, spirited, playful and strong. Juliette Cross pulls the reader into a captivating, thought-provoking and thrilling ride between angels and demons, and the people they love.

You know how good is this story? I need the next installment in the series ASAP, I don’t care what Ms. Cross has to do, even if means she has to become a hermit and abandon her family and friends for as long as it takes to get it written. That’s how good Hardest Fall and the Dominion series is.
I strongly suggest reading Darkest Heart first as the overarching story and the whole world where our story takes place is set up there. Actually, the Dominion series is a spinoff or sequel to The Vessel Trilogy (which I haven’t gotten a chance to read yet but it’s up there in my TBR), but I didn’t have any problems understanding how this apocalyptic world works.
Now, this one had a bit of a slower start for me. With the level of kick-assed-ness that Bone is, I was expecting this to pretty much hit the ground running, especially after the very first chapter. And although it took me a bit to get into the groove of the story, it soon picked up its pace and I was in battle-action heaven.
Bone was an epic leading demoness. She had grit, sass and a fierceness that I totally adored. I especially loved to witness her surrendering the walls she had erected around her heart… and we had Xander to thank for that.
Xander was sexy, charismatic, charming and alpha enough to butt heads with Bone. Granted, he acted somewhat jerkishly in the beginning but all things considered; he was pretty timely in getting his head out of his ass and realizing what he felt for her. Now, as much as I loved Xander and the insanely hot chemistry he shared with Bone, I can’t say he surpassed Dommiel as my favorite… he’s a really hard act to follow. But I can’t deny he gave a really good fight…
“No demon prince nor legion of devils nor all the bloody apocalyptic spawn in creation could ever keep me from her.”
With lots of action, intrigue, battles and the hottest sex, Hardest Fall had everything I was waiting for. The story just keeps getting more and more interesting and I can’t wait to see how it’ll all unfold. With so many fascinating characters I just can’t decide whose story I’m hoping for next!
*Note. Hardest Fall (Dominion, #2) by Juliette Cross was kindly provided by publisher via NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review. So I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I was suppose to love Hardest Fall (Dominion, #2) by Juliette Cross because it had everything going for it - paranormal romance, angels, demons, magic, action, kick-a** heroine and bad-a** hero but sadly I didn't love it. I still liked this book, but somehow it wasn't exactly what I was hoping for, so 3 stars from me.
I guess, the main problem was that I just didn't care and didn't feel anything, which is something that rarely happens to me. I liked all the characters, even the bad guys were done well enough. But sadly I was missing something, I just can't put my finger on what exactly was it.
There was romance and chemistry between both MCs. However, I didn't feel that romance, I didn't feel them fall in love, so in the end, I didn't fall in love with them.
There was action and danger, but I didn't really care for it or feel it.
The world and the story was intriguing and exciting, however, I kind of felt indifferent towards it.
In this case, I think that it was me, not the book.
So I do recommend it to anyone who loves paranormal romance because most probably, you will love this one. Oh, and the cover is so cute, right ;)
the apocalypse rages on in hardest fall, and bone continues to forge the weapons asked of her without picking a side. but when george the demon hunter and dommiel the fallen angel bring her a fellow demon hunter, george's cousin, who has been mortally wounded things start to change. maybe it's actually when she uses her seraph powers to stitch together xander's heart.
his heart mending triggering her own sort of healing. because xander, sees her as redeemable. he sees that making a choice is inevitable, and he believes she will choose good.
and so he chips away at her armor. at the being she has become as bone. and he discovers who she was before. carowyn the seraph. and he uses her name and brings her back to her truest self.
this crew of characters are literally battling with the demon princes of hell, the stakes are as high as ever, and somehow the swoony romance is absolute perfection. i loved dommiel and anya to pieces in darkest heart. but xander and carowyn are also #couplegoals.
**hardest fall will publish on february 25, 2019. i received an advance reader copy courtesy of netgalley/entangled publishing (amara) in exchange for my honest review.
In a post-apocalyptic world, demons are battling for control with the humans caught in the crossfire. Bone, a fallen angel and superior weapon maker, has declares herself neutral and won’t takes sides until is asked to make an unthinkable object and is forced to face her role in the war.
Xander, a demon hunter, was just saved by Bone when he witnesses Rook, the demon prince, request a weapon from Bone. He knows if Rook is asking for it, it can’t be good for him or his friends fighting for human kind. Xander drags Bone into his world, showing her that she doesn’t have to be alone and what the affects her weapons have on the innocence around them.
With all of Bone’s independence and strength, she would be an amazing addition to Xander’s cause. Xander convincing Bone was beautiful. The chemistry was magnetic and so darn hot!
Cross masterfully pens a magical urban fantasy tale of love, heartache and healing that still manages to take your breath away with white knuckle intensity and suspense.

Bone knew humans were doomed eighteen hundred years ago. That was when Bone stepped down from Elysium and gave up it’s light and channeled her gifts. Into something more worthwhile , arming the fighters , offering survival to the fittest, taking no sides. Bone was finishing a blade for one of the Twelvers- a human resistant fighter. Last week she sold to an angel warrior, a specialized crossbow with her own powerful ether ammunition that was designed to incinerate any wartime supernatural. Tomorrow another demon would stroll in wanting to buy Bones wares. The revolving door of wother world beings as well as desperate human with a need only she could fill kept Bone busy. Things he heard her name shouted and she recognized Dommiel, a dangerous demon who recently switched sides, the work of his Angel lover , he was one of the few demons Bone called friend. Tonight he carried the body of a human with powers but had a bleeding chest wound. George was with him. Dominos Daemonum- master of demons, a demon hunter like him and the last of George’s kin- his cousin. Bone said she was not a healer but Dommiel said “ you have the power of inspiration, you can save him. The wonder huiman was Xander. Xander had been stabbed by one of the red priests. He was stabbed to be killed not taken possession of him to make him a slave to the demon princes. Dommiel was the only one Bone had ever operated on, she wasn’t a surgeon. But they were right Bone’s power as a former seraph had not diminished when she left Elysium- the home of heavenly hosts. Bone had once inspired souls of the lost to walk away from despair untils she'd fallen in the pit herself and came to understand the allure. She’d only once used her power to manipulate flesh and bone for Dommiel. The result had left her drained, exhausted, and content. Bone was well known for her talents in weapon-making. But Dommiel believed in her ability to heal. Bone was an instrument, a conduit for the seraph song. Though she had stopped singing to save souls long ago, the song had not left Bone. The Twelvers were humans who banded together to fight against the demon hordes and thrive. Xander came to and heard Bone singing in the shower than she came into the bedroom- hers- to dress and Xander seen her beautiful naked body when she dropped her towel. When Xander stood from the bed he almost passed out. Bone was at his side and had him sit back on the bed. But the jolt of attraction he felt put him more off balance than the near blackout. Than one of the demon princes- they were twins- was at her door. Simian was a loose cannon but the Rook the demon prince at her door was calm. Calculating , and ruthlessly lethal. If he found Xander there he would slowly torture him to death assuming he was Bone’s lover. What Bone hated most was the way Rook looked at her, like they were still together. She had slipped in the roaring twenties , had an erotic affair with rook. His black eyes brought up memories of being cherished, adored, worshipped by a powerful Demon prince. Bone had almost traded her soul for the heady pleasure he gave her. He wanted Bone back. But never again after she had realized the true monster he was. Behind Rook were six of his red priests which were just demon assassins of innocents. Xander was a Uriel hunter- worked with the Twelvers as much as he could. Bone asked about Maddie and said she was half angel. They went to Xanders home as Dommiel thought it was better she stay away from her shop right now. Xander said he didn’t know who Maddie’s father was - obviously one of Bone’s kind and that maddie’s mother was dead. Xander had found and rescued Maddie. Than Bone said maddie needed her or someone like her. A Seraph needs to know her gift and how to wield it or she might hurt herself or others. Than Xander said he would talk to copper so they could spend time together. Xander and Bone were to go see Axle to find out what he knew. Axel and his brothers in arms - two other high demons- Gustav and Wulfric had lost their regular haunt in Berlin and moved their venue to london after taking ownership of a old bar called Cargo in Shoreditch. A compulsion Xander couldn’t seem to control made him want to keep Bone in his home . Into his keeping.
I loved this novel. It had action, danger, mystery, suspense, angels, demons, demon hunters, a dragon, hellhounds, red priests, and so much more. .I loved xander and Bone together and how they interacted. I loved the pace and plot and didn’t want to put this down. It caught my interest right from the beginning and held it right until I had read the last page. I loved how maddie and bone were and how they care right away especially Bone who had been leading such a solitary life. I loved the characters and the ins and out is this book and I highly recommend it.
A fallen angel and a demon hunter? I was sold after reading the blurb and I got just that. Bone aka Carowyn has tried to stay neutral in the battle between heaven and hell. After loosing faith, she lost her wings and gave herself a new name, for a new life where she doesn't pick a side.
When Xander is brought into her workshop, on the verge of death, something in the demon hunter sparks feelings she hasn't allowed herself to have for too long. She works her magic and heals him but Xander doesn't let her keep her emotional distance. He sees the good that's still inside her, the hope she thought long buried.
Xander falls for Carowyn from first setting eyes on her and it's the best part of this book. I loved his teasing, his laughter, his cocky flirty attitude. He was a great character. His past sins motivate him to fight for the side of good and I love that he set out to show Carowyn that this was where she was meant to be.
This had heat and heart. A lot of soul searching and heart healing but ultimately a good vs evil story with a little romance thrown in. The fighting/battle scenes were awesome and I'm curious to know more about little Maddie, and the demon rockstars' Axel, Wolfrick and Gustav, but especial for Uriel, the archangel. There is definitely something about him that piqued my interest.
Overall this story was interesting. It was full of action, humor, great characters and a very sweet hero. I'll definitely be checking out the rest of this series and keeping an eye out for Uriel.
I do not usually read paranormal romance, but the blurb for Hardest Fall sounded interesting. I am really glad I decided to give it a try.
Juliette Cross is amazing at world building! I felt immersed in her version of London, and her vivid descriptions made it easy to get lost in the story.
Bone and Xander were interesting protagonists. Xander is fighting against the demons and Bone refuses to take sides. After they cross paths when she heals him, they both work to figure out what the demon prince Rook wants with a weapon he demands Bone make.
This is book two in the series, but I was able to jump in and understand the world and characters without any issue.
Who’d have thought that Xander would be such a romantic. If he could get a reader’s heart fluttering, Bone did not stand a chance. I loved her character though. Tough as nails with a sweet and gooey centre. And man did I do the dance of joy at the climax that was the battle at the end. For a moment I thought What? That’s it? It’s done! And then came the happy dance.
But do you know what I really want. I want a story about Uriel. That archangel has my curiosity burning like a river of lava. Can’t wait till the next book.
HARDEST FALL by Juliette Cross is book Two in the Dominion Series. This is the story of Bone and Xander. I haven't yet read the previous book, so for me this was a standalone book.
Bone has fallen from grace but is making her way alone in the world taking neither side of the on going post-apocalyptic war, building weapons for any who pays the highest price. Keeping to herself and her secrets has gotten her this far, but when a man who is near death is brought to her to heal..a choice is to be made. Xander is a demon hunter who is healed by Bone and starts to draw her to his side. But of course their path isn't a easy one which just leads to the excitement of this book. Loved it and such a big fan of Ms. Cross's writing...always will recommend her books
***5 Stars***
When it was announced that the next book in the series was going to be Bones and Xander, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it….Well, truth, I get all kinds of excited whenever this author announces releasing more words into the world, so *sheepish grin8 But, regardless, I couldn’t wait to see what was going to happen next and I wasn’t disappointed. It had it all for me: humor, smexyness, heart and a whole slew of characters I adore.
I loved Bones from the first time I met her in Darkest Heart and I grew to adore her as the book progressed. She’s all kinds of badass, she is a demoness afterall, but despite what she believes she has a golden heart that shines through all the dark layers she’s wrapped around it. Xander is charming, cocky and all kinds of alpha AF. He’s also...haunted by his past, which makes him that much more lethal, not only as a hunter, but as a protector of those he loves.
Xander and Bones’ journey to their HEA was a lot of fun. The opposites attract thing was in full force and that only ratched up the smexy simmering between them. I loved their bantering and how they saw each other clearer than they saw themselves and loved what they saw.
This is a great addition to the world that The Dominion series is apart of. The twists and turns were done well and kept me turning the pages to what would happen next. But, as always, much of my enjoyment comes from the supporting cast of characters and I definitely enjoyed hanging out with this crew. Dommiel, was as always entertaining, and I cannot wait to get my hands on Uriel’s book to get to know him better, but Axel, Gustav and Wolfrick are still my ultimate favs, though Maddie stole my heart. So, now to wait patiently (or not so patiently) for the next book and to see what will happen next!
Death is beautiful
The undeniable attraction and chemistry between Bone and Xander made these two the best couple Juliette Cross has created. They are by far my favorite.
I loved Juliette's dragons in her Nightwing series, but I think she hit the center of that jelly donut with Angels, Demons, and Demon Hunters in the Dominion series. The best part of that sweet treat!
"And the lover I once was drawn to like a bloom to the sun peered back at me."
My biggest attraction to this story was the main female character, Bone. I just loved her! She was someone I could relate to. No daddy's spoiled little girl who likes shopping and sneaking out of the house. Bone is a strong woman. Able to take care of herself. Underneath all that ruggedness was a caring heart and someone who needed to be cared for.
"Because your voice...your song is in here." I curled my fingers around her hand. "Pounding into my heart every second of every day. Not every angel can give life." Lifting her palm, I pressed a kiss at the center. "You remember that the next time you decide you're not strong enough."
Another 5 hot as sin stars for Juliette Cross. She just keeps getting better and better.
I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book, so I could give an honest review.
From beginning to the end, Juliette Cross “Hardest Fall” was a noteworthy read. I'm completely astonish I haven't come across her works sooner yet overall I'm overjoyed to have "Hardest Fall" be the first read to introduce me to his phenomenal writer. It’s difficult to come across an author who is able execute flaw characters who are able to redeemed themselves in a memorable way and is also able to kept a consistent flow throughout the series. It became more than a little challenging to put this down and I couldn't wait to see the conclusion of the "Dominion" sequel. There were so many components that made this a successful read and I want to take the time to applaud Juliette Cross for this brilliant piece of work. With so many high rated reviews for this series, it’s quite obvious I wasn’t the only one blown away.
Readers if this blog might notice I am not big on paranormal romance series. I am branching out but still struggle. While this is book 2 of the Dominion series which the author cover a little of what happened in the first book. Bones makes magical weapons her character isn't likable at all. Story feel more sex\romance with demons, angels, demonic beings. The writing can be confusing at times with the detail descriptions that take away from the flow of the story.
I am still lost is this a world post apocalyptic or the world is coming to an end. Either way I am not a fan of this series or the authors writing style.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the advance copy of Juliette Cross Hardest Fall.
**I received a copy of Hardest Fall by Juliette Cross from Entangled Publishing and Net Galley in exchange for a voluntary and honest review**
Hardest Fall by Juliette Cross is the second book in her Dominion series. I read this as a stand alone without reading Darkest Heart without any issues. But this book was so good so I'll definitely be reading Anya and Dommiel story. This book has all the check marks of : 1) Kicka** Hero and Heroine with awesome demon fighting skills and a epic final battle , 2) Demons, evil Red Priests, 3) Fantastic weapons made by Bone with special "sauce" 4) Dragons, Angels, Twelvers (Resistance fighters), Soul Collectors (very hungry ones) and of course hot sex between H/h this book has all of those and more.
Carowyn "Bone" is a weapons maker who infuses her special brand of Demoness who still has the power to use her Seraph power to heal a Demon Hunter Xander. But little does she know that he's one of good guys who'll soon have her questioning being neutral against Rook and Simian quest to rule the world one resistance fighter and Angel at a time. But can Xander break through her shame of being a former Seraph and because of a brief affair with Rook now a demoness to chose him and his fighters? Will she make the Torque that has demon essence?
Xander former aristocrat from 18th century London who one walk on the dark side led to meeting a Demon Prince. But a fight with his cousin leads him to chose Uriel who offered to redeem himself and become a hunter. So when he wakes to find Bone has healed him he knows that she is the One meant for him. Xander choses to show her the Twelvers and prove to her that she can be good again and love him like he does her. When a traitor takes Maddie from the secure walls Bone knows that she must make the torque and trade her life for little Maddie. How will it all end? I guess you have to read Hardest Fall to find out because it's well worth it.
I've read Juliette Cross' Nightwing and Vale of Stars series and loved them but didn't have the chance to start her Dominion Series so I was hesitant to start on the third book before reading the first two. I'm glad I did! Hardest Fall was awesome! The story compelling and the characters so rich you're engrossed in the action from the get-go. I loved Bones, aka Cara, and Zander's love story despite the ongoing apocalypse. I will definitely go back and read the other books not because I didn't understand the storyline but because I want to get to know the other characters. I hope she writes a fourth book too!
Book 1 and now 2 in the Dominion series are my first taste of this authors work and I have to mention that the biggest take I've gotten, is how vivid the scenes are written. The detail in which the author has brought this paranormal world alive has me wishing to see this made into a movie.
Right from the start the action is on and doesn't stop until the end. There are battles that involve angels, demons, demon hunters and even humans. I like that the author doesn't make the good and the bad as black and white. Some demons are evil, some are fighting for good. It makes for an interesting mix of characters.
I love Bone's character. She's a fierce woman that may have lost her way but not her honor. Her past with Rook brought an intensity to the story. With the tremendous power he holds and how cruel he is, I really couldn't wait to see how Bone and Xander were going to defeat him.
What I liked about Xander was how he was relentless in his pursuit of Bone. He knew she had so much good in her that he was determined to pull her off the sidelines and to fight for their cause. It wasn't always about the cause though. He knew she was meant for him, it didn't matter that she was a demoness and he was a demon hunter.
There are many great side characters in this series and I have my fingers crossed for Uriel and Maximus to have their own story. There is just enough mystery around them that I'm super intrigued.
Having read (en enjoyed) previous books of Juliette Cross, I requested the arc for Hardest Fall. After reading a few chapters, I had the feeling I already knew part of the characters... Because how could I forget badass Dommiel and his Anya from Darkest Heart? And now we get another story about them. And about Uriel and George and his brother Xander. When Xander is mortally wounded, Dommiel and George take him to Bone. Bone is a badass demon warrior and fallen Angel (Seraph). She is determined to stay neutral in the war between demons and humans by forging weapons for everyone.
One of her clients is Rook, brother of Simian (yeah that ugly one from Darkest Heart, who had poisoned Anya). And he is threatening Bone to forge a weapon for him with his essence in it. This can be used to compel someone to do hideous things. Bone and Xander want to find out why Rook needs this weapon and for whom. Working together (the demon-hunter Xander and the demon Bone) they realize they develop feelings for each other. And where Bone discovers that Xander is so much more than just another hunter, Xander realizes that beneath the harsh exterior is a real angel.
Fighting evil together with Dommiel, George, Uriel and Anya, will they be able to stop Rook and Simian in time? As usual: fastpaced, nail-biting, intriguiging, funny, bad ass and sparks flying! Five out of five stars from me and a special thank you to Netgalley for providing the arc.
Alexander (Xander), is a golden-haired rake, Master demon hunter (he’s just really cool kicking butt), and has this direct way of seeing straight to the heart of someone. He also had a wonderfully biting relationship with the demon Dommiel, similar to Pamela Clare’s bromance between Hunter and D’arcangelo, with jokes, sarcasm, and an unspoken loyalty forged in life threatening circumstances.
Bone, (aka Carowyn) was bloody fantastic! Whip smart, creates weapons for anyone and tries so hard to play like Switzerland in the battle of demons and angels. I loved her! She had a huge heart she didn’t want hurt again and hid from everyone, including herself, but Xander was having none of that, determined to show her how to see her light.
One fatal stab lands Xander on Carowyn’s table where she works her magic and the sparks burning off these two was a rocketship of stars from beginning to end! I loved their byplay, or maybe I should say drawn-out foreplay, because Xander wasn’t shy about enticing Cara over to his way of thinking! And his methods...of course a hunter would be very good with his hands;)
Juliette Cross writes strong characters that are not perfect, sometimes straddling the line of good and bad, yet she manages to convey their struggle in such an empathetic way, I can’t help but get sucked in! It doesn’t hurt that she can write protective, snarky males and intelligent, spitfire heroines either...
Book two of the Dominion series, Hardest Fall had a bit of everything-sweeping romance, demons and angels, comedy, zippy lines, good vs evil, one avenging demon hunter, and the demoness/angel he’s falling for! If this series was a tv show, I’d never miss an episode!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
