Beautiful story spanning decades of Two sisters and how their choices impact each of their lives. So much emotion and sadness and also happiness through it all. Lots of historical fiction and happenings of the times.

Overall, a really good book, though there were a few times that I had to walk away from the book for a couple of days because it was overly heavy/dramatic for me. I have read a few other books by this author, and while I don't think that this is her very best work, I do think that this book is worth reading! I do like that the story followed the two sisters through their childhood and throughout their adult lives. I enjoy "slow burner" books like this that follow characters as they age and grow.

Starting in the late 50's or early 60's, the story follows the lives of two sisters, their adventures and everyday happenings. You get to see their families grow while the world is changing and how women's roles change with it. I liked the book it did make me tear up which obviously means I was into the book. I wanted to love this like I did City of Girls and while I liked it a lot it didn't hit my top book of the year.

Beautiful story about sisters! Was a little slow at times but overall I enjoyed it. I love Jennifer Weiner and anyone who is a fan of hers will love this book.

Unfortunately, this book did not work for me. I tried to get into it a few times and have finally decided to DNF it.

This was my first Jennifer Weiner and it unfortunately did not work for me. I think others may love her writing and style though, women's fiction is not my favorite and I struggled to become attached to the characters. DNF

I enjoy this author, but this book was over the top. So much drama and too many problems with the characters.

I appreciate the premise of Mrs. Everything by Jennifer Weiner. Yet, I end up not the reader for this book mostly because I find it over dramatized. To me, the need to include a little bit of everything that could face a woman in the book diminishes the challenges that the title of "Mrs. Everything" poses. There are challenges enough in daily life without reaching out for extremes. The extremes leave the lasting impression rather than the strength of the women navigating the challenges.

Jennifer Weiner has long been on my radar as an author. From the moment she introduced us to Cannie Shapiro in Good in Bed, I was hooked on her books. I was excited when Mrs. Everything was available to read on NetGalley. The book has has been out since June but we all know, I’m terrible with ARCs. At least I get there eventually. Anyway, Everything introduces us to two sisters, Bethie and Jo. I immediately had Little Women vibes but that’s just because I’m obsessed with the March sisters. Anyway, I digress. We met Bethie and Joe when they are young in the 50s and grow with them to present day. Each sister experiences love and heartbreak which molds them in to the people they eventually become. While I liked the story, I didn’t love it. I found myself annoyed with Bethie. Maybe it’s the older sister in me and I identified more with Jo. I’m not sure. Because it’s a family saga story and takes place over so many years, the pacing was slow for me. I don’t think Weiner could have written the story any differently, I just don’t think this was my favorite work of hers.

I gave it 3 of 5 stars. Content warning for rape and drugs. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy.

Ms. Everything Tries to to it all Through 7 Decades and Female-Shaped Glasses

Best-selling author of the female realm Jennifer Weiner is as good at describing the small domestic circle as addressing the larger political and socioeconomic world of a female in her latest novel, Mrs. Everything, which she deems “the longest I’ve ever written” and “the most ambitious work I’ve ever attempted.”

Opening in 2015, Jo gets a call from the physician treating her breast cancer with the news that after nine years of many treatments isn’t good. Jump back to 1951 when Jo is six years old, her younger sister Bethie is four, and they have just moved to a less Jewish neighborhood in Detroit. Here really begins the epic story of a woman’s life and the choices she’s made, the ones made for her, and how the world changes both of those things as she grows into the woman she is at the end of the book and her life in 2016. The book truly ends in 2022 back in front of that Detroit house with her sister Bethie, the daughters they both had, the granddaughters she had, and her grandson, finally the first boy born in the family.

Parallel stories of Jo’s sister Bethie spans the novel, along with Jo’s three daughters, and all of the sticky shit of being a woman in the world: racial discrimination, bigotry, drugs, rape, sexual abuse, abortion, infidelity, homosexuality, money problems, Jello, etc. It’s an ambitious story that can get repetitive in its themes but Weiner keeps us interested in these relatable women–after all, we’ve been there too. #ustoo

I really wanted to like this book because I love Jennifer Weiner's writing, but I had a very hard time getting through this book. I thought there were a lot of stereotypical characters and stereotypical situations. I did like that it followed the characters through the majority of their lives, from early childhood to the present. There is love, loss, death, marriage, babies, and everything in between - it’s all there. The messages are great, embrace change and the differences between each other, make peace with your past, don’t let it define you, just be you, etc.

Mrs. Everything reads like a beautifully written family saga spanning decades. This is not my usual genre, but I LOVED it. I read it along with my mother and it had something that we both could enjoy and sparked many conversations. Perfect book club pick too!

The writing here was great and there was definitely a focus on character development. I can see why so many people enjoyed it and felt connected to the story and characters. There were times I did not feel that way, which is why it lost stars for me. It's still something I'd recommend to fans of this author and style of book. Thank you to the publisher for the ARC!

I am not a fan of syrupy and predictable novels. This is one of those, in my opinion. It's just not my type of literature, though others, especially Weiner fans, will probably enjoy it.

What I really liked about this book is that it follows sisters Jo and Bethie Kaufman through their entire lives. It takes a look at their relationship with each other, their parents, friends, boyfriends, husbands, and wife. Although it's told in alternating chapters in both voices, the real focus I think was on Jo, who ever since she was a little girl, wanted to be in jeans and running around. She suppressed her homosexuality, because it was just easier to do growing up in the 50's. Bethie, who was always the perfect little girl, has her life turned around when she gets to college and experiments with drugs. Jo, who was always the rebel, saves her. And neither seems to be good enough for their mother. It's a very honest book about all different types of relationships.

I am of the opinion that everything Jennifer Weiner touches turns to gold.... this was no exception. Based on the synopsis, I wasn't convinced that I would enjoy this book, but I ended up really loving it. I adore her writing style, her cadence... just EVERYTHING. Another hit, as far as I am concerned.

I loved this book so much! I have recommended it to every single person who is looking for a book to read. The characters made me laugh and cry and love them like I knew them forever. I actually waited in the car in the parking lot, before a baseball game and wouldn't get out until I finished this amazing read. One of my favorite books ever

I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it. I usually do love her books, perhaps the drama of her calling out and vilifying a blogger who didn't like it and gave it a low rating coloured my perception of the book.

I tried more than once to get into this book and I just couldn't. I didn't even make it 50 pages before I finally gave up.
