I honestly struggled for months to get through this book. I ended up DNF it. Although the writing was beautiful, I was never able to connect with the characters. I have shelved this book in my kindle will hopefully try to finish it in the future.
An entertaining work of historical fiction which I enjoyed once I relaxed into it and stopped worrying about how historically accurate it was. I felt that overall it was true to the spirit of the characters and the age, and gave a vivid portrait of artistic life in Paris and Barcelona. It follows Picasso’s early years as he struggled to establish himself as an artist, and chronicles his friendship wait Casagemas and the two men’s tempestuous relationship with Germaine and the tragic outcome. The book managed to convey Picasso’s emotional turmoil and demonstrates how this manifested itself in his art – in particular that time we know now as the Blue Period. The author has obviously done his research and the novel felt authentic and convincing. There are plenty of books about Picasso and I feel this one can justifiably take its place amongst them in giving another perspective on Picasso’s coming-of-age.
Thank you for the opportunity to read this book. A full review will be posted on Amazon and Goodreads
I tried, I tried really hard, but I simply couldn't get into Luke Jerod Kummer's The Blue Period.
The subject matter is there, but the tone and style of the narrative didn't speak to me. The book lacked the magic I'd anticipated and felt pale alongside Anne Girard's Madame Picasso.
I was intrigued by the cover and the description of this book but found I struggled to get into it. I forced myself to finish but I was bored throughout.
There are so many reviews out there already, I'm not what else I can bring to the table, so I'll just was this was OK. I had trouble staying engaged.
I liked the idea of the book. Painters such as Pablo Picasso fascinate me and I was looking forward to reading the book. Unfortunately, did I find the book's story to be too tedious and as much as I wanted to like the book I just could find myself warming up to the story.
Great read. The author wrote a story that was interesting and moved at a pace that kept me engaged. The characters were easy to invest in.
I enjoyed reading this book because it was written about Picasso. That being said however I found it slow moving and very disjointed. There is a lot of information that I have never read before about the artists life so for that reason. I am glad I pushed myself to the end.
This book was difficult for me. The book was informative about Picasso, but felt bored throughout most of it. Not enough excitement for me.
Love his art or hate it, there's no dispute that Picasso lived large. Really large. Know this going in- that he was no angel- and you'll enjoy this tale of his early years. I found this entertaining and informative about a part of his life I knew little about. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. For fans of historical fiction about real people.
